Adversarial And Data Poisoning Attacks Against Deep Learning, Jing Lin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Machine translation software, image captioning, grammar check (Grammarly), chatbot, real-time captioning and translation, music genre classification, and document classification are a few examples of deep learning applications that achieve outstanding performance in areas where traditional statistical techniques have difficulty performing classification and/or regression. Google translator has over 100 billion daily users and can translate 109 languages instantly (much faster than a human translator). AlphaGo won Lee Sedol, the eighteen-time world champion. Microsoft Team's living captioning provides accurate real-time captioning as a speaker speaks. Deep learning achieves undoubtedly remarkable performance. However, recent studies on adversarial attacks and data poisoning attacks show …

Development Of Enhanced Algae Strains And Sustainable Cultivation Processes For Production Of Algal Lipids For Biofuels And Bioproducts, Enlin Lo Mar 2022

Development Of Enhanced Algae Strains And Sustainable Cultivation Processes For Production Of Algal Lipids For Biofuels And Bioproducts, Enlin Lo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The establishment of an algae industry is crucial for addressing global biofuel and bioproduct demand that meets the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) worldwide. Photosynthetic microalgae are excellent sources for food, fiber, fuel, feed, and fertilizer, which are the 5Fs of the SDG. However, at present, algae-based materials are not cost-competitive or sufficiently sustainable. Improved productivity, lower cultivation cost, and reduced use of resources are required to transition from lab to industry, necessitating the development of superior strains that have high productivity and can tolerate environmental stress, such as temperature and salinity, so they can be cultivated at large scale outdoors …

Synthesis Of Phosphonate-Based Diimide Ligands, Kenya V. Medina, Adelani Pius Mar 2022

Synthesis Of Phosphonate-Based Diimide Ligands, Kenya V. Medina, Adelani Pius

Honors Program Theses and Research Projects

There has been a resurged interest in the synthesis of metal-organic frameworks because of their potential applications in energy production and drug delivery. Although diimides are insoluble in aqueous solutions, the addition of phosphonic acid allows the complex to be water soluble, which greatly increases their application. Therefore, the creation of a hybrid metal-organic complex by the addition of phosphonic groups to diimide ligands can result in a polar porous compound. In this project the ligand design included the use of dianhydrides including pyromellitic dianhydride, naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride, perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride, and biphenyl-tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride. These dianhydride precursors were refluxed under argon …

Mass Capacity Analysis Of Stormwater Control Measures Using Synthetic Stormwater With Silica, Organic And Hydrocarbon Constituents, Craig Michael Fairbaugh Mar 2022

Mass Capacity Analysis Of Stormwater Control Measures Using Synthetic Stormwater With Silica, Organic And Hydrocarbon Constituents, Craig Michael Fairbaugh

Dissertations and Theses

Stormwater control measure (SCM) performance is well studied regarding solids removal; however, analysis of mass loading capacity, long-term performance, and maintenance demands are challenging due to the variability and multiple constituents inherent in urban stormwater. This research examines the long-term water quality performance and sediment mass capacity of two common SCMs: high rate biofiltration (HRBF) and conventional bioretention (BRT). Pollutant removal trials were conducted in a laboratory setting per the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) filtration protocol in two phases: the first using inorganic sediment per the NJDEP protocol, the second phase with the addition of organic sediment …

Participation In Curriculum And Cultural Ambassador Group To Enhance Student Belongingness, Jake Tuft, Jacob Schvaneveldt

Annual Research Symposium

COVID-19 negatively impacted students' abilities to participate in live, in-person events; students were unable to interact with peers or build relationships critical to success and well-being. Quarantine, social distancing and video conferencing did not create this problem however, it simply amplified the fact that dental students seemingly lack camaraderie and a sense of belongingness. The Curriculum and Cultural Ambassador group was created to allow students to bond over shared goals in the hopes of improving their experiences within dental school. This group gives students the ability to “Be the Change” on campus and enact real-time change to foster a sense …

Leonhard Euler’S Correspondence Schedule, Dominic Klyve

Euleriana

In addition to his large number of published articles and books, Leonhard Euler engaged in a prolific correspondence with scientists, mathematicians, and administrators throughout his career. By compiling the dates of all of his known letters, as described in the Opera Omnia, we can get some understanding of Euler’s weekly schedule. We report here for the first time Euler’s preference, particularly during his Berlin Period, of writing letters on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

On A New Class Of Oscillations, Sylvio R. Bistafa

Euleriana

In this publication, Euler derived for the first time, the differential equation of the (undamped) simple harmonic oscillator under harmonic excitation, namely, the motion of an object subjected to two acting forces, one proportional to the distance travelled, the other one varying sinusoidally with time.

On A New Class Of Oscillations, Sylvio R. Bistafa Mar 2022

On A New Class Of Oscillations, Sylvio R. Bistafa

Euleriana

This publication was motivated by Krafft’s accidental observation of a suspended clock setting itself in constant motion as a pendulum. His analysis of the phenomenon led him to conclude that the vibration of the clock was solely due to imbalances in the clock's balance wheel. Next, he conceives a 'little machine' as he called it, in which a straight bar loaded by small weights at its extremities is free to oscillate about the center of gravity of a regular suspended clock. He then investigates different oscillating conditions, by calculating moments with different weights and lengths of the bar arms, to …

Conversations On Change, Christopher Goff, Erik Tou

Euleriana

Welcome to Volume 2 of Euleriana! One of the pleasures of studying the his- tory of mathematics is reading how historical figures conversed with each other on topics of their era. In this volume, those conversations focus on differential equations—a subject which occupied Euler’s attention for much of his 56-year career. Throughout, we will see how he corresponded with many scholars of the day as he developed and refined his mathematical ideas.

Materials Science And Mechanosensitivity Of Living Matter, Alison E. Patteson, Merrill E. Asp, Paul A. Janmey Mar 2022

Materials Science And Mechanosensitivity Of Living Matter, Alison E. Patteson, Merrill E. Asp, Paul A. Janmey

Physics - All Scholarship

Living systems are composed of molecules that are synthesized by cells that use energy sources within their surroundings to create fascinating materials that have mechanical properties optimized for their biological function. Their functionality is a ubiquitous aspect of our lives. We use wood to construct furniture, bacterial colonies to modify the texture of dairy products and other foods, intestines as violin strings, bladders in bagpipes, and so on. The mechanical properties of these biological materials differ from those of other simpler synthetic elastomers, glasses, and crystals. Reproducing their mechanical properties synthetically or from first principles is still often unattainable. The …
