Perceived Cultural Impacts Of Climate Change Motivate Climate Action And Support For Climate Policy, Kim-Pong Tam, Angela K. Y. Leung, Brandon Koh

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The impacts of climate change on human cultures have received increasing attention in recent years. However, the extent to which people are aware of these impacts, whether such awareness motivates climate action, and what kinds of people show stronger awareness are rarely understood. The present investigation provides the very first set of answers to these questions. In two studies (with a student sample with N = 199 from Singapore and a demographically representative sample with N = 625 from the USA), we observed a generally high level of awareness among our participants. Most importantly, perceived cultural impacts of climate change …

Bermudagrass (Cynodon sp.) is an important perennial forage grass grown in many parts of the world. Bermudagrass Stem Maggot (BSM) (Atherigona reversura Villeneuve) is an insect pest that reduces forage yield and nutritive value if it is not controlled. The pest, native to SE Asia, was first documented in North America in 2009 and is now considered invasive. A collection of over 300 forage bermudagrass accessions was evaluated in the field for susceptibility to BSM in 2014 and 2015. Tolerant lines and susceptible checks were then evaluated for yield loss due to BSM in a replicated field study …

Physical Investigation Of Downburst Winds And Applicability To Full Scale Events, Federico Canepa Feb 2022

Physical Investigation Of Downburst Winds And Applicability To Full Scale Events, Federico Canepa

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Thunderstorm winds, i.e. downbursts, are cold descending currents originating from cumulonimbus clouds which, upon the impingement on the ground, spread radially with high intensities. The downdraft phase of the storm and the subsequent radial outflow that is formed can cause major issues for aviation and immense damages to ground-mounted structures. Thunderstorm winds present characteristics completely different from the stationary Gaussian synoptic winds, which largely affect the mid-latitude areas of the globe in the form of extra-tropical cyclones. Downbursts are very localized winds in both space and time. It follows that their statistical investigation, by means of classical full scale anemometric …

Adaptation, Transformation And Resilience In Healthcare Comment On “Government Actions And Their Relation To Resilience In Healthcare During The Covid-19 Pandemic In New South Wales, Australia And Ontario, Canada”, David G. Angeler, Harris A. Eyre, Michael Berk, Craig R. Allen, William Hynes, Igor Linkov

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Adaptive capacity is a critical component of building resilience in healthcare (RiH). Adaptive capacity comprises the ability of a system to cope with and adapt to disturbances. However, “shocks,” such as the current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, can potentially exceed critical adaptation thresholds and lead to systemic collapse. To effectively manage healthcare systems during periods of crises, both adaptive and transformative changes are necessary. This commentary discusses adaptation and transformation as two complementary, integral components of resilience and applies them to healthcare. We treat resilience as an emergent property of complex systems that accounts for multiple, often disparately distinct …

Zero-Knowledge Proof, Deniability And Their Applications In Blockchain, E-Voting And Deniable Secret Handshake Protocols., Somnath Panja Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In this thesis, we propose a cryptographic technique for an authenticated, end-to-end verifiable and secret ballot election. Currently, almost all verifiable e-voting systems require trusted authorities to perform the tallying process except for the DRE-i and DRE-ip systems. We have shown a weaknesses in the DRE-ip system and proposed a solution. We have modified the DRE-ip system so that no adversary can create and post a valid ballot on the public bulletin board without detection. We provide security proofs to prove the security properties of the proposed scheme. We propose two methods to store these ballots using blockchain and cloud …

Recent Advances In Structural Regulation On Non-Precious Metal Catalysts For Oxygen Reduction Reaction In Alkaline Electrolytes, Xue Wang, Li Zhang, Chang-Peng Liu, Jun-Jie Ge, Jian-Bing Zhu, Wei Xing

Journal of Electrochemistry

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline electrolytes is an important electrochemical process for metal-air batteries and anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). However, the sluggish kinetics spurs intensive research on searching robust electrocatalysts. Non-precious metal catalysts (NPMCs) that can circumvent the cost and scarcity issues associated with platinum (Pt)-based materials have been pursued and the challenges lie in the performance improvement to rival Pt-based benchmarks. As the composition and structure of the NPMCs have a significant impact on the catalytic performance, precise regulation on the catalyst structure holds great promise to bridge the activity gap between NPMCs and Pt-based benchmarks. …

Water splitting is a promising technology to produce clean hydrogen if powered by renewable energies, where oxygen evolution is the rate determining step at an anode. Here we adjust the different crystal planes of the cobalt oxides catalyst to expose more effective active sites through a hydrothermal process, so as to improve the reaction activity for oxygen evolution. The samples were well characterized by TEM, SEM and XRD. Among the three synthetic crystal planes (100), (111) and (110) of spinel cobalt oxides, the (100) crystal plane has the highest intrinsic activity. Combining in-situ infrared and DFT calculations, we …

A Beginners’ Guide To Modelling Of Electric Double Layer Under Equilibrium, Nonequilibrium And Ac Conditions, Lu-Lu Zhang, Chen-Kun Li, Jun Huang

Journal of Electrochemistry

In electrochemistry, perhaps also in other time-honored scientific disciplines, knowledge labelled classical usually attracts less attention from beginners, especially those pressured or tempted to quickly jam into research fronts that are labelled, not always aptly, modern. In fact, it is a normal reaction to the burden of history and the stress of today. Against this context, accessible tutorials on classical knowledge are useful, should some realize that taking a step back could be the best way forward. This is the driving force of this article themed at physicochemical modelling of the electric (electrochemical) double layer (EDL). We begin the exposition …

Essays On Social Networks, Workplace Ties And Labor Productivity., Swati Sharma Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The role of social contacts in finding jobs, career mobility and other labor market outcomes is well acknowledged both theoretically and empirically in labor economics. The existence of individuals’ social networks at their workplace is a pervasive phenomenon, leading to the widespread use of social ties for information, influence and referrals on both sides of the labor market. The central theme of this thesis is to examine the interplay of ‘off-workplace socio-economic interdependence’ and outcomes at the workplace. Understanding this interdependence has the potential to devise policies which can impact labor productivity, especially in developing countries. This thesis divided into …
