Supertranslations At Timelike Infinity, Sumanta Chakraborty, Debodirna Ghosh, Sk Jahanur Hoque, Aniket Khairnar, Amitabh Virmani

Faculty and Student Publications

We propose a definition of asymptotic flatness at timelike infinity in four spacetime dimensions. We present a detailed study of the asymptotic equations of motion and the action of supertranslations on asymptotic fields. We show that the Lee-Wald symplectic form Ω(g, δ1g, δ2g) does not get contributions from future timelike infinity with our boundary conditions. As a result, the “future charges” can be computed on any two-dimensional surface surrounding the sources at timelike infinity. We present expressions for supertranslation and Lorentz charges.

Rate Maximization In A Uav Based Full-Duplex Multi-User Communication Network Using Multi-Objective Optimization, Syed Muhammad Hashir, Sabyasachi Gupta, Gavin Megson, Ehsan Aryafar, Joseph Camp

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper, we study an unmanned-aerial-vehicle (UAV) based full-duplex (FD) multi-user communication network, where a UAV is deployed as a multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) FD base station (BS) to serve multiple FD users on the ground. We propose a multi-objective optimization framework which considers two desirable objective functions, namely sum uplink (UL) rate maximization and sum downlink (DL) rate maximization while providing quality-of-service to all the users in the communication network. A novel resource allocation multi-objective-optimization-problem (MOOP) is designed which optimizes the downlink beamformer, the beamwidth angle, and the 3D position of the UAV, and also the UL power of the …

Collaborative Curating For Discovery And Expansion Of Visual Clusters, Duy Dung Le, Hady W. Lauw Feb 2022

Collaborative Curating For Discovery And Expansion Of Visual Clusters, Duy Dung Le, Hady W. Lauw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In many visually-oriented applications, users can select and group images that they find interesting into coherent clusters. For instance, we encounter these in the form of hashtags on Instagram, galleries on Flickr, or boards on Pinterest. The selection and coherence of such user-curated visual clusters arise from a user’s preference for a certain type of content as well as her own perception of which images are similar and thus belong to a cluster. We seek to model such curation behaviors towards supporting users in their future activities such as expanding existing clusters or discovering new clusters altogether. This paper proposes …

Including Everyone, Everywhere: Understanding Opportunities And Challenges Of Geographic Gender-Inclusion In Oss, Gede Artha Azriadi Prana, Denae Ford, Ayushi Rastogi, David Lo, Rahul Purandare, Nachiappan Nagappan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The gender gap is a significant concern facing the software industry as the development becomes more geographically distributed. Widely shared reports indicate that gender differences may be specific to each region. However, how complete can these reports be with little to no research reflective of the Open Source Software (OSS) process and communities software is now commonly developed in? Our study presents a multi-region geographical analysis of gender inclusion on GitHub. This mixed-methods approach includes quantitatively investigating differences in gender inclusion in projects across geographic regions and investigate these trends over time using data from contributions to 21,456 project repositories. …

Active Learning Of Discriminative Subgraph Patterns For Api Misuse Detection, Hong Jin Kang, David Lo Feb 2022

Active Learning Of Discriminative Subgraph Patterns For Api Misuse Detection, Hong Jin Kang, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A common cause of bugs and vulnerabilities are the violations of usage constraints associated with Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). API misuses are common in software projects, and while there have been techniques proposed to detect such misuses, studies have shown that they fail to reliably detect misuses while reporting many false positives. One limitation of prior work is the inability to reliably identify correct patterns of usage. Many approaches confuse a usage pattern’s frequency for correctness. Due to the variety of alternative usage patterns that may be uncommon but correct, anomaly detection-based techniques have limited success in identifying misuses. We …

Block Size Optimization For Pow Consensus Algorithm Based Blockchainapplications By Using Whale Optimization Algorithm, Betül Aygün, Hi̇lal Arslan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Blockchain-based applications come up with cryptocurrencies, especially Bitcoin, introducing a distributed ledger technologies for peer-to-peer networks and essentially records the transactions in blocks containing hash value of the previous blocks. Block generation constitutes the basis of this technology, and the optimization of such systems is among the most crucial concerns. Determining either the block size or the number of transactions in the block brings out a remarkable problem that has been solved by the miners in recent years. First, higher block size results in higher transaction time, on the other hand, smaller block size has many disadvantages such as security, …

Estonian Internet Voting With Anonymous Credentials, İsa Sertkaya, Peter Roenne, Peter Y. A. Ryan Feb 2022

Estonian Internet Voting With Anonymous Credentials, İsa Sertkaya, Peter Roenne, Peter Y. A. Ryan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The Estonian Internet voting (EIV) scheme is a unique example of a long-term nation-wide, legally binding electronic voting deployment. The EIV scheme is used in parallel with standard paper-based election day voting, of course invalidating an already cast i-vote. This necessarily requires careful authentication of the eligible voters and makes the Estonian identity card solution a crucial part of the scheme, however, note that Parsovs has recently drawn attention to the security flaws found in Estonian ID-cards. In this study, we propose an e-voting scheme EIV-AC that integrates the EIV scheme with anonymous credentials based on self-sovereign identity. In addition …

Forming A Decentralized Research Network: Ds4h, Eni̇s Karaarslan, Meli̇h Bi̇ri̇m, Hüseyi̇n Emre Ari

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

There is a trend toward decentralized systems, but these systems are developed without conducting enough software tests. Also, the performance, scalability, and sustainability of the decentralized systems are not taken into account. One of the reasons is the time-consuming testing process. The other is the hardware requirements and the complexity of the software installations of the testing environment. Developer communities need stable and secure research networks to test and develop prototypes before releasing the working versions. Cloud-based blockchain test networks are available, but it allows using a specific framework. Also, users are required to learn how to use each framework. …

A Biomimetic Model For Oxidative Metabolism Of Thiopurine Drugs, Oluyemi Oludare Alo Feb 2022

A Biomimetic Model For Oxidative Metabolism Of Thiopurine Drugs, Oluyemi Oludare Alo

Dissertations and Theses

Type B hepatotoxicity has been reported for thiopurines, and this has limited their clinical uses. Although a lot of research has been done on thiopurines, the precise mechanism of their hepatotoxicity is still unclear. The results of the in vitro and in vivo experiments aimed at assessing the products of their CYP450-mediated bioactivation have been contradictory. Although it has been theorized that the hepatic toxicity of this class of drug is caused by their bioactivation to electrophilic reactive metabolite (RM) and concomitant protein binding to form immunogenic adducts, resulting in direct cellular dysfunction or an immune response via the formation …

Quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging Methodology Development, Layale Bazzi Feb 2022

Quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging Methodology Development, Layale Bazzi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive medical imaging modality that provides excellent soft tissue contrast and resolution. Objects with high magnetic susceptibility distort the magnetic field, leading to severe artifacts in conventional MRI. It is very challenging to image around metal implants. Novel strategies may exploit the field distortion for spatial encoding. The magnetic field map is required in the development of these methods. A robust field map can also be employed to quantify high susceptibility particles that play a major role in cell tracking studies and hyperthermic treatment of cancers.

Pure phase encoding (PPE) techniques with short encoding …

Understanding The Proton Transport In Non-Aqueous Histidine-Based Nanostructures, Jiang Bian Feb 2022

Understanding The Proton Transport In Non-Aqueous Histidine-Based Nanostructures, Jiang Bian

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Over the past two decades, proton transport has been extensively studied because of the many applications to the development of new technological devices. In particular, understanding proton transport permits the design of new materials with desired properties for constructing effective proton exchange membranes (PEM) in fuel cells. Current PEM technology involves biocummulative perfluorinated membranes that operate under hydrated conditions, for which the proton conductivity is limited by the usually high temperature that fuel cells operate. Therefore, it is of great interest to study the alternative systems that have the potential to conduct protons, in particular, those that are able to …

Representation Learning For Chemical Activity Predictions, Mohamed S. Ayed Feb 2022

Representation Learning For Chemical Activity Predictions, Mohamed S. Ayed

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Computational prediction of a phenotypic response upon the chemical perturbation on a biological system plays an important role in drug discovery and many other applications. Chemical fingerprints derived from chemical structures are a widely used feature to build machine learning models. However, the fingerprints ignore the biological context, thus, they suffer from several problems such as the activity cliff and curse of dimensionality. Fundamentally, the chemical modulation of biological activities is a multi-scale process. It is the genome-wide chemical-target interactions that modulate chemical phenotypic responses. Thus, the genome-scale chemical-target interaction profile will more directly correlate with in vitro and in …

Liquidity Commonality With Factor Models, Ernesto Garcia Iii Feb 2022

Liquidity Commonality With Factor Models, Ernesto Garcia Iii

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Market microstructure research has recently devoted attention to a phenomenon called commonality in liquidity. In this dissertation, I will analyze commonality in liquidity using a novel factor model approach and a generalized definition of commonality in liquidity. This analysis will show that commonality in liquidity is rarely a marketwide phenomenon and is mostly restricted to stocks with a large market capitalization. Additionally, commonality in liquidity is a very recent phenomenon whose appearance coincides with a rise in passive investing after the Dotcom Bubble burst and, more so, after the 2008 Financial Crisis. I will present evidence that suggests commonality in …

As a component of government, budgets are fundamental not only to improving the quality of a shared society, but also to understanding what our government officials consider to be their priorities. However, most budgets can be difficult to understand, using terms that are not familiar to people who have not studied finance or economics. To that end, Slices of the Big Apple is an interactive, centralized narrative website that uses visualizations at its core in order to: 1) facilitate a holistic understanding of the New York City government budget for NYC residents; and 2) conduct a five-year analysis of Community …

Prime Factors: America’S Prioritization Of Literacy Over Numeracy And Its Relationship To Systemic Inequity, Troy Smith Feb 2022

Prime Factors: America’S Prioritization Of Literacy Over Numeracy And Its Relationship To Systemic Inequity, Troy Smith

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

For much of American history, literacy has been prioritized in K-12 education and society, at large, at the expense of numeracy. This lack of numerical emphasis has established innumeracy as an American cultural norm that has resulted in America not producing a sufficient number of numerate citizens, and ranking poorly on mathematical performance in international comparisons. This paper investigates the decisions and circumstances that led to this under prioritization, along with the public and cultural impact of said actions. Toward this end, literature regarding contemporary and historical influences on American mathematics education (e.g., civic, policy, and parental) was reviewed. The …

Charge Transport And Spin Dynamics Of Color Centers In Diamond, Damon Daw

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Solid state defects in diamond are promising candidates for room temperature quantum information processors (1, 3, 5). Chief among these defects is the nitrogen vacancy center (‘NV center’ or ‘NV’). The NV has long coherence times (at 300K) and its state is easily initialized, manipulated and read out (5). However, the outstanding issue of entangling NV centers in a scalable fashion, at room temperature remains a challenge. This thesis presents experimental and theoretical work aimed at achieving this goal by developing the ‘flying qubit’ framework in (1). This method for remote entanglement utilizes a charge carrier (initialized into a definite …
