Assessing Feed Gaps On Smallholder Livestock Farms In Limpopo: Production System And Coping Strategies, S. A. Lamega, M. Komainda, M. P. Hoffmann, J. J. Odhiambo, K. K. Ayisi, J. Isselstein

IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)

Smallholder farms in southern Africa are predominantly mixed crop-livestock systems and often characterized by low productivity. Therefore, providing sufficient forage becomes a challenge that results first in feed gaps, i.e. the difference between the demand for and supply of forage, and secondly, in nutrient mining of the soil due to the overuse of the resources. However, the availability of forage follows potentially seasonal patterns. Hence, a key entry point for any intervention strategies for improvement is an assessment of forage quantity and quality throughout the year. Against this background, we investigated six locations, smallholders’ cattle production systems and their adaptation …

Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is highly overexpressed in most prostate cancers and is clinically visualized using PSMA-specific probes incorporating glutamate-ureido-lysine (GUL). PSMA is effectively absent from certain high-mortality, treatment-resistant subsets of prostate cancers, such as neuroendocrine prostate cancer (NEPC); however, GUL-based PSMA tracers are still reported to have the potential to identify NEPC metastatic tumors. These probes may bind unknown proteins associated with PSMA-suppressed cancers. We have identified the up-regulation of PSMA-like aminopeptidase NAALADaseL and the metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) in PSMA-suppressed prostate cancers and find that their expression levels inversely correlate with PSMA expression and are associated with GUL-based …

Tile Drainage Flow Partitioning And Phosphorus Export In Vermont Usa, Ryan Ruggiero, Donald Ross, Joshua W. Faulkner

Lake Champlain Sea Grant Institute

Tile drainage (TD) has been identified as a potential non-point source of phosphorus (P) pollution and subsequent water quality issues. Three fields with TD in Vermont USA were monitored to characterize hydrology and P export. Fields were in corn silage and used minimal tillage and cover cropping practices. Preferential flow path (PFP) activity was explored by separating TD flow into flow pathway and source connectivity components using two hydrograph separation techniques, electrical conductivity end member unmixing, and hydrograph recession analysis. TD was the dominant P export pathway because of higher total discharge. Drought conditions during this study limited surface runoff, …

A Newly Recognized Theropod Assemblage From The Lewisville Formation (Woodbine Group; Cenomanian) And Its Implications For Understanding Late Cretaceous Appalachian Terrestrial Ecosystems, Christopher R. Noto, Domenic C. D'Amore, Stephanie K. Drumheller, Thomas L. Adams Jan 2022

A Newly Recognized Theropod Assemblage From The Lewisville Formation (Woodbine Group; Cenomanian) And Its Implications For Understanding Late Cretaceous Appalachian Terrestrial Ecosystems, Christopher R. Noto, Domenic C. D'Amore, Stephanie K. Drumheller, Thomas L. Adams

Articles & Book Chapters

While the terrestrial fossil record of the mid-Cretaceous interval (Aptian to Cenomanian) in North America has been poorly studied, the recent focus on fossil localities from the western United States has offered a more detailed picture of vertebrate diversity, ecosystem dynamics and faunal turnover that took place on the western landmass of Laramidia. This is in stark contrast to the terrestrial record from the eastern landmass of Appalachia, where vertebrate fossils are rare and consist mostly of isolated and fragmentary remains. However, a detailed understanding of these fossil communities during this interval is necessary for comparison of the faunal patterns …

Variational Autoencoders For Reliability Optimization In Multi-Access Edge Computing Networks, Arian Ahmadi, Omid Semiari, Mehdi Bennis, Méroúane Debbah

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

Multi-access edge computing (MEC) is viewed as an integral part of future wireless networks to support new applications with stringent service reliability and latency requirements. However, guaranteeing ultra-reliable and low-latency MEC (URLL MEC) is very challenging due to uncertainties of wireless links, limited communications and computing resources, as well as dynamic network traffic. Enabling URLL MEC mandates taking into account the statistics of the end-to-end (E2E) latency and reliability across the wireless and edge computing systems. In this paper, a novel framework is proposed to optimize the reliability of MEC networks by considering the distribution of E2E service delay, encompassing …

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Manureshed management—the strategic use of manure nutrients that prioritizes recycling between livestock systems and cropping systems—provides a comprehensive framework for sustainable nutrient management that necessitates the collaboration of many actors. Understanding the social dimensions of collaboration is critical to implement the strategic and technological requirements of functional manuresheds. To improve this understanding, we identified aspirational networks of actors involved in manureshed management across local, regional, and national scales, principally in the United States, elucidating key relationships and highlighting the breadth of interactions essential to successful manureshed management. We concluded that, although the social networks vary with scale, the involvement of …

Modeling Defect Mediated Color-Tunability In Leds With Eu-Doped Gan-Based Active Layers, Hayley J. Austin, Brandon Mitchell, Dolf Timmerman, Jun Tatebayashi, Shuhei Ichikawa, Yasufumi Fujiwara, Volkmar Dierolf

Physics & Engineering Faculty Publications

Color tunability from red to orange to yellow has been demonstrated in GaN-based LED devices with Eu-doped GaN layers as the active region. Under current injection, this is achieved by varying the current density and the pulse conditions. The underlying mechanism behind this color tunability is a redistribution of energy among the D-5(J) states of a Eu3+ ion. This energy shuffling is facilitated by a local defect that has been neglected in previous modeling work. Including this defect allows for a quantitative prediction of the relative time-averaged populations of the Eu3+ ion's D-5(0) and D-5(1) states. Extracting, from experimental results, …

The phase state of respiratory aerosols and droplets has been linked to the humidity-dependent survival of pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2. To inform strategies to mitigate the spread of infectious disease, it is thus necessary to understand the humidity-dependent phase changes associated with the particles in which pathogens are suspended. Here, we study phase changes of levitated aerosols and droplets composed of model respiratory compounds (salt and protein) and growth media (organic-inorganic mixtures commonly used in studies of pathogen survival) with decreasing relative humidity (RH). Efflorescence was suppressed in many particle compositions and thus unlikely to fully account for the humidity-dependent …
