Novel Primitive Decompositions For Real-World Physical Reasoning, Mackie Zhoou, Bridget Duah, Jamie C. Macbeth
Novel Primitive Decompositions For Real-World Physical Reasoning, Mackie Zhoou, Bridget Duah, Jamie C. Macbeth
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
In this work, we are concerned with developing cognitive representations that may en- hance the ability for self-supervised learning systems to learn language as part of their world explorations. We apply insights from in-depth language understanding systems to the problem, specifically representations which decompose language inputs into language-free structures that are complex combinations of primitives representing cognitive abstractions such as object permanence, movement, and spatial relationships. These decompositions, performed by a system traditionally called a conceptual analyzer, link words with complex non-linguistic structures that engender the rich relations between language expressions and world exploration that are a familiar aspect of …

Interleaving A Symbolic Story Generator With A Neural Network-Based Large Language Model, Jingwen Xiang, Zoie Zhao, Mackie Zhou, Megan Mckenzie, Alexis Kilayko, Jamie C. Macbeth, Scott Carter, Katharine Sieck, Matthew Klenk
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
Research in deep learning has recently produced models of natural language that are capable of generating natural language output which, at a glance, has strong similarities to that written by intelligent humans. However, the texts produced by deep learning-based large language models (LLMs), upon deeper examination, reveal the challenges that they have in producing outputs that maintain logical coherence. One specific application area of interest for LLMs is in fictional narrative generation, a mode of operation in which stories are generated by the model in response to a prompt text that indicates the start of a story or the desired …

Script Combination For Enhanced Story Understanding And Story Generation Systems, Megan Mckenzie, Alexis Kilayko, Jamie C. Macbeth, Scott Carter, Katharine Sieck, Matthew Klenk
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
Scripts, knowledge structures defining sequences of events in stereotypical social situations, were traditionally used to simulate the ways in which people can infer unstated details in understanding a story. In this paper, we describe the MUltiple SCRipt AcTivator (MUSCRAT), and the Script Combination Applier Mechanism (SCAM), significant enhancements of Cullingford’s Script Applier Mechanism which accomplish two novel aims. One system, MUSCRAT, is able to activate more than one script and use them during a story understanding process. The second system, SCAM, uses scripts for story generation, using script variables as “terminals” for combining two or more scripts together to create …

Atmospheric Retrieval: Bayesian Methods, Machine Learning, And Application To Exoplanets, Michael Himes
Atmospheric Retrieval: Bayesian Methods, Machine Learning, And Application To Exoplanets, Michael Himes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Atmospheric retrieval is the inverse modeling method where atmospheric properties are constrained based on measured spectra. Due to the low signal-to-noise ratios of exoplanet observations, exoplanetary retrieval codes pair a radiative transfer (RT) simulator with a Bayesian statistical framework in order to characterize the distribution of atmospheric parameters that could explain the observations (the posterior distribution). This requires on the order of 106 RT model evaluations, which requires hours to days of compute time depending on model complexity. In this work, I investigate atmospheric retrieval methods and apply them to observations of hot Jupiters. Chapter 2 presents a set of …

Towards More Efficient Collaborative Distributed Data Analysis And Learning, Zixia Liu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Modern information era gives rise to the persistent generation of large amounts of data with rapid speed and broad geographical distribution. Obtaining knowledge and understanding via analysis and learning from such data have invaluable worth. Features of such data analytical tasks commonly include: data can be large scale and geographically distributed; computing capability demand can be enormous; tasks can be time-critical; some data can be private; participants can have heterogeneous capabilities and non-IID data; and multiple simultaneously submitted data analytical tasks can be possible. These bring challenges to contemporary computing infrastructure and learning models. In view of this, we develop …

The mortality associated with cervical cancer can be reduced if detected at the precancer stage, but current methods are limited in terms of subjectivity, cost and time. Optical spectroscopic methods such as Raman spectroscopy can provide a rapid, label-free and nondestructive measurement of the biochemical fingerprint of a cell, tissue or biofluid. Previous studies have shown the potential of Raman spectroscopy for cervical cancer diagnosis, but most were pilot studies with small sample sizes. The aim of this study is to show the clinical utility of Raman spectroscopy for identifying cervical precancer in a large sample set with validation in …

Cell communication via exosomes is capable of influencing cell fate in stress situations such as exposure to ionizing radiation. In vitro and in vivo studies have shown that exosomes might play a role in out-of-target radiation effects by carrying molecular signaling mediators of radiation damage, as well as opposite protective functions resulting in resistance to radiotherapy. However, a global understanding of exosomes and their radiation-induced regulation, especially within the context of an intact mammalian organism, has been lacking. In this in vivo study, we demonstrate that, compared to sham-irradiated (SI) mice, a distinct pattern of proteins and miRNAs is found …

Interpolating The Riemann Zeta Function In The P-Adics, Rebecca Mamlet
Scripps Senior Theses
In this thesis, we develop the Kubota-Leopoldt Riemann zeta function in the p-adic integers. We follow Neil Koblitz's interpolation of Riemann zeta, using Bernoulli measures and p-adic integrals. The underlying goal is to better understand p-adic expansions and computations. We finish by connecting the Riemann zeta function to L-functions and their p-adic interpolations.

Analyzing Behavioral Adaptation To Covid-19 And Return To Pre-Pandemic Baselines In A Cohort Of College Seniors, Vlado Vojdanovski
Computer Science Senior Theses
As the critical phase of the COVID-19 pandemic seems to be winding down, it is important to analyze the adjustment to COVID-19 and return to normalcy of various populations. In this study we focus on the behavioral adjustments exhibited by a cohort of N=114 college seniors. To infer COVID-19 adjustment we compare the 2021 year (second year of COVID-19) to the 2020 year (first year of COVID-19) and 2019 (prepandemic baseline year). We begin with a broad analysis between the second and first covid year, finding that the second year of COVID-19 shows significant returns to pre-pandemic baselines on multiple …

Magnetic Microscopy And Search For Exotic Interaction Detection With Color Centers In Diamond, Nathaniel Ristoff
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
Nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers have been used extensively for the measurement of magnetic fields in applications of geology, biology, medicine, and fundamental physics. In regard to fundamental physics, NV centers offer a unique opportunity to test potential velocity dependant spin-spin interactions as well as velocity-spin interactions at the micron scale. In regards to magnetic materials, NV centers offer a platform to investigate magnetic properties of nanoparticles in an individual, but highly parallelized measurement. In this work, an experiment is proposed to measure a potential fundamental interaction between spins, mediated by an integer spin boson. These velocity dependent interactions will couple …

The Summit 7.5-minute quadrangle is located south of Louisville and west of Elizabethtown along the boundary between Hardin and Grayson Counties and within the Mississippian Plateau physiographic region (McDowell, 1986). Topography is characterized by the low relief Pennyroyal region that sits at elevations between 560 to 650 ft above sea level, the low relief Mammoth Cave plateau at elevations between 750 to 900 ft, and the steep Dripping Springs escarpment that separates the two plains. Moore (1964) mapped the bedrock geology of the quadrangle, which was later digitized by Conley (2002). Mississippian bedrock is exposed throughout the quadrangle and is …
A Study Of The Analysis Of Hemp-Derived Oil Products: Development Of A Method For The Analysis Of Phytocannabinoids In Medicinal Products, Erin Johnson
Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences
Human interactions with cannabis have a history spanning millennia as a source of fiber, food, and medicine. The plant came across Asia, Europe, and Africa with the movements of people and travelers eventually coming to the Americas with European explorers. In colonizing North America, cannabis fiber was key to the production of canvas and ropes for ships. Although fiber was the driver for cannabis production in the United States, medicinal uses were prevalent and propelled the eventual regulations. The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 mandated accurate labeling on drugs such as cannabis followed by the Marihuana Tax Act …

Examining The Credibility Of Story-Based Causal Methodologies, Megan E. Kauffmann
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore how evaluators justify using story-based methodologies when examining causality. The two primary research questions of the study included: 1) what arguments are made by evaluators to justify the credibility of story-based causal methodologies to evaluation stakeholders; and 2) from the perspective of evaluators, how do contextual factors influence whether story-based causal methodologies are perceived as credible by evaluation stakeholders? A case study was conducted to examine the cases of four evaluators who had experience implementing a story-based methodology in an evaluation. Data collection procedures included two interviews with each participant and a …

Mapping Of Microseismic Aftershock Sequences Following The 2017 Lincoln, Montana M 5.8 Earthquake, Reyer M. Fenoff
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
The Rocky Mountains of western Montana have long been experiencing tectonic compression and extension that has shaped much of western North America. This activity consistently produces seismic events, like the 6 July 2017 M 5.8 earthquake 11 km southeast of Lincoln, MT, which can be used to advance understanding of crust and mantle dynamics and structure. Seismic mapping is vital to understanding structure and tectonic activity in western Montana as well as in analogous locations across the world. Recently deployed seismometers from the University of Montana as well as the Montana Regional Seismic Network (MRSN) from the Montana Bureau of …

A Comparison Of Predicted And Observed Ocean Tidal Loading Displacements Around The Puget Sound, Tanessa Caitlyn Morris
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
Around coastlines and in shallow oceans, models of ocean tidal loading (OTL) are not highly accurate and can create sources of error in OTL analysis. OTL is tides moving ocean water that cause the surface of Earth to deform. In this study, forward-modelled predictions of OTL are compared to observations from Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data to explore the elastic deformation response of Earth to OTL around the Puget Sound. Data from 75 stations were processed to yield position estimates at intervals of 5 minutes for a year. The OTL model used for comparison was the FES2014b ocean-tide model …

Realtime Event Detection In Sports Sensor Data With Machine Learning, Mallory Cashman
Honors Theses and Capstones
Machine learning models can be trained to classify time series based sports motion data, without reliance on assumptions about the capabilities of the users or sensors. This can be applied to predict the count of occurrences of an event in a time period. The experiment for this research uses lacrosse data, collected in partnership with SPAITR - a UNH undergraduate startup developing motion tracking devices for lacrosse. Decision Tree and Support Vector Machine (SVM) models are trained and perform with high success rates. These models improve upon previous work in human motion event detection and can be used a reference …

Investigating Signs Of Orbital Decay In The Tres-1 Exoplanetary System, Amanda F. Wester
Honors Theses and Capstones
Transit observations of exoplanetary systems can be used to investigate orbital decay. TrES-1b is an exoplanet hypothesized to be experiencing orbital decay due to observed transit timing variations (TTVs) [12]. Numerous transits must be observed to establish a long term pattern to conclusively determine if the planet’s orbit is decaying. Measurements were made using the UNH Observatory where 2 transits were observed of the TrES-1b transiting system on February 27, 2022 and March 5, 2022. A CCD camera was used to image the transit and capture calibration images. The software AstroImageJ (AIJ) was used to calibrate the images and perform …

Applications Of A Combined Approach Of Kinetic Monte Carlo Simulations And Machine Learning To Model Atomic Layer Deposition (Ald) Of Metal Oxides, Emily Justus
MSU Graduate Theses
Metal-oxides such as ZnO or Al2O3 synthesized through Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) have been of great research interest as the candidate materials for ultra-thin tunnel barriers. In this study, I have applied a 3D on-lattice Kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) code developed by Timo Weckman’s group to simulate the growth mechanisms of the tunnel barrier layer and to evaluate the role of various experimentally relevant factors in the ALD processes. I have systematically studied the effect of parameters such as the chamber pressure temperature, pulse, and purge times. The database generated from the kMC simulations was subsequently used …
Synthesis And Characterization Of Chitosan Derivatives Intended For Gene Delivery Applications, Alex M. Mcmullen
Synthesis And Characterization Of Chitosan Derivatives Intended For Gene Delivery Applications, Alex M. Mcmullen
MSU Graduate Theses
Chitosan has been studied as a non-viral vector capable of efficient gene delivery due to its favorable properties such as biodegradability, biocompatibility, and is non-toxic to mammalian cells. Incorporating electrostatic interactions in non-viral vectors enhance the vector permeability. This work focuses on two parts. Firstly, cationic chitosan derivatives were synthesized using quarternary ammonium and phosphonium groups. This was achieved by coupling carboxylic acid ligands with these quarternary groups to chitosan through an amide bond. The carboxylic acid ligands were synthesized from 4-methylbenzoic acid and either triethyl phosphine or triethyl amine. The ligand was then attached to chitosan through an amide …
