The Middle Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf Environmental Studies: Data Files, Gary F. Anderson
Data
During the oil embargo in the mid-1970’s, the U.S. Government proposed exploring the mid-Atlantic continental shelf for oil leasing to increase production. The Virginia Institute of Marine Science was contracted by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to conduct baseline surveys of the biological, geological, chemical, and physical nature of the environment being considered for lease, and its sensitivity to prolonged exposure to contaminants derived from development activities. Surveys were conducted off the coast, from Virginia to New Jersey, four times a year (summer, fall, spring, winter) for two years beginning summer of 1975 through spring of 1977, resulting in …
Evaluating Science Communication Efforts And Citizen Scientists' Knowledge Of, Attitude Toward, And Behavioral Intentions Related To The North American River Otter, Karlee D. Jewell
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Citizen Science (CS) and scientific visual, spatial, and graphic art projects have the potential to engage community members, provide opportunities for advances in scientific literacy, increase interest in science and local environmental knowledge, and elevate pro-environmental attitudes. CS depends upon public participation, and motivation for participation is varied, including participants’ desire to learn something new or contribute to science or scientific knowledge. An effective CS project will be rooted in an understanding of individuals’ motivations for participation, striving to meet those motivations, and effectively evaluating not only the scientific outputs of the project but also whether participants’ motivations are being …
Techno-Economic Feasibility Of Electrifying Food Markets In Nigeria With Biogas Hybrid Mini-Grids, Demi Temitope Ogunwo
Techno-Economic Feasibility Of Electrifying Food Markets In Nigeria With Biogas Hybrid Mini-Grids, Demi Temitope Ogunwo
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This thesis explored the feasibility of electrifying a food market in an urban city in Nigeria with a hybrid biogas-powered mini-grid. Under the Energizing Economies Initiative of the Rural Electrification Agency of Nigeria, nine markets in the country currently receive constant access to electricity via hybrid mini-grid systems. As a majority of these systems are diesel-solar-battery systems, this thesis explored the use of biogas generators as a substitute for diesel generators in hybrid mini-grids for food markets. A fruit and vegetable market in Ketu, Lagos was used as a case study for the research. The research for this thesis was …

Estimating The Ecosystem Service Of Aleutian Cackling Goose Droppings On Pastures, Brian G. Fagundes
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The Aleutian cackling goose (Branta hutchinsii leucopareia) experienced a population low of 790 geese in 1974 and has recovered to the current estimate of 186,100 geese in 2021. Private livestock producers view geese as pasture competitors and use hazing and hunting to scare geese from private lands to adjacent public lands. I investigated if geese provide an ecosystem service via dropping fertilizing effects to improve pastures in northern California.
A greenhouse experiment was conducted from February-August 2019 at Cal Poly Humboldt, divided into two experiments: freshly sown ryegrass pasture and established plant and soil communities removed intact from …

Recent breakthroughs in deep learning-based protein structure prediction show that it is possible to obtain highly accurate models for a wide range of difficult protein targets for which only the amino acid sequence is known. The availability of accurately predicted models from sequences can potentially revolutionise many modelling approaches in structural biology, including the interpretation of cryo-EM density maps. Although atomic structures can be readily solved from cryo-EM maps of better than 4 Å resolution, it is still challenging to determine accurate models from lower-resolution density maps. Here, we report on the benefits of models predicted by AlphaFold2 (the best-performing …
A Brief Comparison Of K-Means And Agglomerative Hierarchical Clustering Algorithms On Small Datasets, Hassan I. Abdalla
A Brief Comparison Of K-Means And Agglomerative Hierarchical Clustering Algorithms On Small Datasets, Hassan I. Abdalla
All Works
In this work, the agglomerative hierarchical clustering and K-means clustering algorithms are implemented on small datasets. Considering that the selection of the similarity measure is a vital factor in data clustering, two measures are used in this study - cosine similarity measure and Euclidean distance - along with two evaluation metrics - entropy and purity - to assess the clustering quality. The datasets used in this work are taken from UCI machine learning depository. The experimental results indicate that k-means clustering outperformed hierarchical clustering in terms of entropy and purity using cosine similarity measure. However, hierarchical clustering outperformed k-means clustering …

Chatbots hold the promise of revolutionizing education by engaging learners, personalizing learning activities, supporting educators, and developing deep insight into learners’ behavior. However, there is a lack of studies that analyze the recent evidence-based chatbot-learner interaction design techniques applied in education. This study presents a systematic review of 36 papers to understand, compare, and reflect on recent attempts to utilize chatbots in education using seven dimensions: educational field, platform, design principles, the role of chatbots, interaction styles, evidence, and limitations. The results show that the chatbots were mainly designed on a web platform to teach computer science, language, general education, …

Based on historical records, driving in hazardous weather conditions is one of the most serious causes that lead to fatal accidents on roads in general and in United Arab Emirates (UAE) highways in particular. One solution to improve road safety is to equip vehicles and infrastructure with connected and smart devices and convert them into autonomous vehicles. Before deploying a concrete solution to the field, it must be validated by simulation, and more specifically by agent-based simulation. In this paper, we propose to implement the Reaction Time-Based Collaborative Velocity Control (RT-CVC) model that was implemented in autonomous cars into an …

Universities are considered one of the primary sources of knowledge and an essential component of the triple helix theory. They fuel the industries with the required expertise and pool of resources to operate efficiently. Moreover, entrepreneurial universities successfully contributed to regional development and employment growth by supporting entrepreneurial activities and incubation programmes. Thus, university-industry collaboration is vital for enhancing knowledge-based industries' knowledge diffusion as well as the regional innovation atmospheres. On the other hand, countries and regional authorities strive to stimulate their regional development by encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship activities. For example, the UAE announced its 2015 innovation strategy that …

Energy Integrated Ratio Analysis Of The Anomalous Precession Frequency In The Fermilab Muon G-2 Experiment, Ritwika Chakraborty
Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy
The muon’s anomalous magnetic moment, aμ, provides a unique way for probing physics beyond the standard model experimentally as it gathers contributions from all the known and unknown forces and particles in nature. The theoretical prediction of aμ has been in greater than 3 σ tension with the experimental measurement since the results of the Muon g-2 Experiment at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (E-821) were published in the early 2000s with a precision of 540 ppb. To settle this tension, the new Fermilab Muon g - 2 Experiment (E-989) is currently taking data with the aim of …
First Steps In The Small-Scale Structure Formation In The Universe: The Emergence Of Galaxies, Da Bi
First Steps In The Small-Scale Structure Formation In The Universe: The Emergence Of Galaxies, Da Bi
Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy
Galactic morphology in the contemporary universe results from the convergence of a long list of physical processes, not all of them yet fully understood and quantified. The universe exhibits a hierarchical structure: galaxies grow being immersed in dark matter (DM) halos, which in turn are fed by diffuse and filamentary accretion. I use a suite of very high-resolution zoom-in cosmological simulations of galaxies in order to study the assembly of galaxies at high redshifts, z ≥ 2, to quantify the role of environment and of the parent DM halos in this procss. My models have been chosen to lie within …

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a nervous system disorder first described as a neurological condition in 1817. It is one of the more prevalent diseases in the elderly, and Alzheimer’s is the second most common neurodegenerative illness. It impacts the patient’s movement. Symptoms start gradually with tremors, stiffness in movement, and speech and voice disorders. Researches proved that 89% of patients with Parkinson’s has speech disorder including uncertain articulation, hoarse and breathy voice and monotone pitch. The cause behind this voice change is the reduction of dopamine due to damage of neurons in the substantia nigra responsible for dopamine production. In …

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) play an important role in facilitating data collection in remote areas due to their remote mobility. The collected data require processing close to the end-user to support delay-sensitive applications. In this paper, we proposed a data collection scheme and scheduling framework for smart farms. We categorized the proposed model into two phases: data collection and data scheduling. In the data collection phase, the IoT sensors are deployed randomly to form a cluster based on their RSSI. The UAV calculates an optimum trajectory in order to gather data from all clusters. The UAV offloads the data to …

Medical Image Analysis (MIA) is one of the active research areas in computer vision, where brain tumor detection is the most investigated domain among researchers due to its deadly nature. Brain tumor detection in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) assists radiologists for better analysis about the exact size and location of the tumor. However, the existing systems may not efficiently classify the human brain tumors with significantly higher accuracies. In addition, smart and easily implementable approaches are unavailable in 2D and 3D medical images, which is the main problem in detecting the tumor. In this paper, we investigate various deep learning …

The present work deals with e+−e− pair production in the four-nucleon system. We first analyze the process as a purely electromagnetic one in the context of a state-of-the-art approach to nuclear strong-interaction dynamics and nuclear electromagnetic currents, derived from chiral effective field theory (χEFT). Next, we examine how the exchange of a hypothetical low-mass boson would impact the cross section for such a process. We consider several possibilities, that this boson is either a scalar, pseudoscalar, vector, or axial particle. The ab initio calculations use exact hyperspherical-harmonics methods to describe the bound state and low-energy spectrum of …
