Otoliths Of South-Western Australian Fish: A Photographic Catalogue, Chris Dowling, Kim Smith, Elaine Lek, Joshua Brown Sep 2021

Otoliths Of South-Western Australian Fish: A Photographic Catalogue, Chris Dowling, Kim Smith, Elaine Lek, Joshua Brown

Fisheries research reports

Due to the species-specific nature of otoliths and given they are often the only part of the fish preserved when fish die, otolith catalogues can be used in numerous applications, such as diet studies in fish eating animals, including pinnipeds, fish and sea birds; archaeological purposes such as reconstructing indigenous people’s diets from otoliths found in middens or evolutionary history of fish species by comparing fossilized otoliths. Given the unique mixture of subtropical and temperate fish, including many endemic species that occur off the southwest corner of WA having a catalogue for this area is extremely important for people working …

Linking Numbers In Three-Manifolds, Patricia Cahn, Alexandra Kjuchukova Sep 2021

Linking Numbers In Three-Manifolds, Patricia Cahn, Alexandra Kjuchukova

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

Let M be a connected, closed, oriented three-manifold and K, L two rationally null-homologous oriented simple closed curves in M. We give an explicit algorithm for computing the linking number between K and L in terms of a presentation of M as an irregular dihedral three-fold cover of S3 branched along a knot α⊂ S3. Since every closed, oriented three-manifold admits such a presentation, our results apply to all (well-defined) linking numbers in all three-manifolds. Furthermore, ribbon obstructions for a knot α can be derived from dihedral covers of α. The linking numbers we compute are necessary for evaluating one …

In-Game Social Interactions To Facilitate Esl Students' Morphological Awareness, Language And Literacy Skills, Yolanda A. Rankin, Sana Tibi, Casey Kennington, Na-Eun Han

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Video games that require players to utilize a target or second language to complete tasks have emerged as alternative pedagogical tools for Second Language Acquisition (SLA). With the exception of vocabulary acquisition, much of the prior research in game-based SLA fails to gauge students' literacy skills, specifically their morphological awareness or understanding of the smallest meaningful linguistic units (e.g., prefixes, suffixes, and roots). Given this shortcoming, we utilize a two-player online game to facilitate social interactions between Native English Speakers (NES) and English as a Second Language (ESL) students as a mechanism to generate ESL students' written output in the …

Winter Harbor Dredge Channel Data Report, Donna A. Milligan, C. Scott Hardaway Jr., Christine A. Wilcox, Cameron Green

Reports

Winter Harbor is a tidal creek that flows between a sandy barrier system and an eroding marsh shoreline. It is an important waterway that provides access to the Chesapeake Bay from the Winter Harbor watershed. In the past, Winter Harbor Inlet was the only hydraulic connection from the Winter Harbor watershed and Chesapeake Bay. The two open water areas of Winter Harbor were separated by marsh channels that hydraulically connected to the mouth at the present-day Winter Harbor Inlet. The federally-defined channel at Winter Harbor was authorized by Congress in 1950. It was authorized as a 12 feet (ft) deep, …

The Empathetic Car: Exploring Emotion Inference Via Driver Behaviour And Traffic Context, Shu Liu, Kevin Koch, Zimu Zhou, Simon Foll, Xiaoxi He, Tina Menke, Elgar Fleisch, Felix Wortmann

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

An empathetic car that is capable of reading the driver’s emotions has been envisioned by many car manufacturers. Emotion inference enables in-vehicle applications to improve driver comfort, well-being, and safety. Available emotion inference approaches use physiological, facial, and speech-related data to infer emotions during driving trips. However, existing solutions have two major limitations: Relying on sensors that are not built into the vehicle restricts emotion inference to those people leveraging corresponding devices (e.g., smartwatches). Relying on modalities such as facial expressions and speech raises privacy concerns. By contrast, researchers in mobile health have been able to infer affective states (e.g., …

Biasheal: On-The-Fly Black-Box Healing Of Bias In Sentiment Analysis Systems, Zhou Yang, Harshit Jain, Jieke Shi, Muhammad Hilmi Asyrofi, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Although Sentiment Analysis (SA) is widely applied in many domains, existing research has revealed that the unfairness in SA systems can be harmful to the welfare of less privileged people. Several works propose pre-processing and in-processing methods to eliminate bias in SA systems, but little attention is paid to utilizing post-processing methods to heal bias. Postprocessing methods are particularly important for systems that use third-party SA services. Systems that use such services have no access to the SA engine or its training data and thus cannot apply pre-processing nor in-processing methods. Therefore, this paper proposes a black-box post-processing method to …

Dynamic Heterogeneous Graph Embedding Via Heterogeneous Hawkes Process, Yugang Ji, Tianrui Jia, Yuan Fang, Chuan Shi Sep 2021

Dynamic Heterogeneous Graph Embedding Via Heterogeneous Hawkes Process, Yugang Ji, Tianrui Jia, Yuan Fang, Chuan Shi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Graph embedding, aiming to learn low-dimensional representations of nodes while preserving valuable structure information, has played a key role in graph analysis and inference. However, most existing methods deal with static homogeneous topologies, while graphs in real-world scenarios are gradually generated with different-typed temporal events, containing abundant semantics and dynamics. Limited work has been done for embedding dynamic heterogeneous graphs since it is very challenging to model the complete formation process of heterogeneous events. In this paper, we propose a novel Heterogeneous Hawkes Process based dynamic Graph Embedding (HPGE) to handle this problem. HPGE effectively integrates the Hawkes process into …

Orthogonal Inductive Matrix Completion, Antoine Ledent, Rrodrigo Alves, Marius Kloft Sep 2021

Orthogonal Inductive Matrix Completion, Antoine Ledent, Rrodrigo Alves, Marius Kloft

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We propose orthogonal inductive matrix completion (OMIC), an interpretable approach to matrix completion based on a sum of multiple orthonormal side information terms, together with nuclear-norm regularization. The approach allows us to inject prior knowledge about the singular vectors of the ground-truth matrix. We optimize the approach by a provably converging algorithm, which optimizes all components of the model simultaneously. We study the generalization capabilities of our method in both the distribution-free setting and in the case where the sampling distribution admits uniform marginals, yielding learning guarantees that improve with the quality of the injected knowledge in both cases. As …

Enhanced Platinum (Ii) Drug Delivery For Anti-Cancer Therapy, Marek T. Wlodarczyk

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Over the years, anti-cancer therapies have improved the overall survival rate of patients. Nevertheless, the traditional free drug therapies still suffer from side effects and systemic toxicity, resulting in low drug dosages in the clinic. This often leads to suboptimal drug concentrations reaching cancer cells, contributing to treatment failure and drug resistance. Among available anti-cancer therapies, metallodrugs are of great interest. Platinum (II)-based agents are highly potent and are used to treat many cancers, including ovarian cancer (OC). Cisplatin (cis-diaminedichloroplatinum (II)) is the first Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved metallodrug for treatment of solid tumors, and its mechanism …

This study proposes a systematic approach to the construction of a simulation model to support decision-making concerning the capacity limit and staffing configurations at the paediatric eye clinic in Singapore under the COVID-19 pandemic situation. During the pandemic, the clinic must ensure that the operations are aligned to the safe-distancing regulations put in place by the Ministry of Health while coping with the demand. We developed simulation models to examine the ‘asis’ process and proposed numerous ‘to-be’ processes for new clinic configurations to operate under the pandemic conditions. We combined scenario-thinking and simulation optimization to determine the additional manpower and …

Injecting Descriptive Meta-Information Into Pre-Trained Language Models With Hypernetworks, Wenying Duan, Xiaoxi He, Zimu Zhou, Hong Rao, Lothar Thiele

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Pre-trained language models have been widely adopted as backbones in various natural language processing tasks. However, existing pre-trained language models ignore the descriptive meta-information in the text such as the distinction between the title and the mainbody, leading to over-weighted attention to insignificant text. In this paper, we propose a hypernetwork-based architecture to model the descriptive meta-information and integrate it into pre-trained language models. Evaluations on three natural language processing tasks show that our method notably improves the performance of pre-trained language models and achieves the state-of-the-art results on keyphrase extraction.

Nnetfix: An Artificial Neural Network-Based Denoising Engine For Gravitational-Wave Signals, Kentaro Mogushi, Ryan Quitzow-James, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Instrumental and environmental transient noise bursts in gravitational-wave (GW) detectors, or glitches, may impair astrophysical observations by adversely affecting the sky localization and the parameter estimation of GW signals. Denoising of detector data is especially relevant during low-latency operations because electromagnetic follow-up of candidate detections requires accurate, rapid sky localization and inference of astrophysical sources. NNETFIX is a machine learning, artificial neural network-based algorithm designed to estimate the data containing a transient GW signal with an overlapping glitch as though the glitch was absent. The sky localization calculated from the denoised data may be significantly more accurate than the sky …

Mechanically Transduced Immunosorbent Assay To Measure Protein-Protein Interactions, Christopher J. Petell, Kathyrn Randene, Michael Pappas, Diego Sandoval, Brian Dstrahl, Joseph S. Harrison, Joshua P. Steimel

College of the Pacific Faculty Articles

Measuring protein-protein interaction (PPI) affinities is fundamental to biochemistry. Yet, conventional methods rely upon the law of mass action and cannot measure many PPIs due to a scarcity of reagents and limitations in the measurable affinity ranges. Here, we present a novel technique that leverages the fundamental concept of friction to produce a mechanical signal that correlates to binding potential. The mechanically transduced immunosorbent (METRIS) assay utilizes rolling magnetic probes to measure PPI interaction affinities. METRIS measures the translational displacement of protein-coated particles on a protein-functionalized substrate. The translational displacement scales with the effective friction induced by a PPI, thus …

Analysis Of The Vertical Movement Of Active Gnss Stations As A Result Of Semidiurnal Tides, Rose Pearson, Eugen Niculae Sep 2021

Analysis Of The Vertical Movement Of Active Gnss Stations As A Result Of Semidiurnal Tides, Rose Pearson, Eugen Niculae

Conference papers

Ireland is subject to the constant effects and influence of semidiurnal tides. Western coastal regions are exposed to tidal ranges up to and exceeding five metres, consequentially introducing varied water volumes with temporal intervals. In addition, the Earth is elastic in composition, resulting in morphing and warping at the hands of celestial and oceanic forces.

This study looked at Online Precise Point Positioning (PPP) service to accurately monitor the vertical movement of coastal lands. In addition, GNSS Static Post-processing was conducted to discern which method of the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) processing is best for detecting VLM (vertical land …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

In recent years, small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) have been used widely to monitor animals because of their customizability, ease of operating, ability to access difficult to navigate places, and potential to minimize disturbance to animals. Automatic identification and classification of animals through images acquired using a sUAS may solve critical problems such as monitoring large areas with high vehicle traffic for animals to prevent collisions, such as animal-aircraft collisions on airports. In this research we demonstrate automated identification of four animal species using deep learning animal classification models trained on sUAS collected images. We used a sUAS mounted with …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Lesser scaup (Aythya affinis) and greater scaup (A. marila), hereafter scaup, consume a variety of aquatic invertebrates, plants, and occasionally small fish. Scaup have foraged on commercial aquaculture farms in the southern United States for decades. However, the types, abundance, and rate of fish exploitation by scaup on baitfish and sportfish farms are not well documented. Thus, information is needed to understand how fish and other foods influence scaup use of aquatic resources, and any potential economic effects of depredation of fish. From November–March in winters 2016–2017 and 2017–2018, we conducted 1,458 pond surveys to estimate …

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

The Cenomanian–Turonian boundary (CTB) on the intra-Tethyan Adriatic Carbonate Platform (AdCP) is generally characterised by a transition between microbially laminated and/or bioclastic limestones to calcisphere-rich massive limestone with bioturbated intervals, organic-rich interbeds, firmgrounds, as well as neptunian dikes, carbonate turbidites, tempestites and slumped structures. Compilation of the results from two study sites in the northwestern part of the AdCP and from previous research (on Istria Peninsula and islands in the Adriatic Sea in Croatia) provides a more complete overview of geological events and paleoenvironmental conditions that transformed the formerly contiguous shallow-marine environments during this time period. For the first time, …

Central Argentina from the Pampean flat-slab segment to northern Patagonia (27°–41°S) represents a classic example of a broken retroarc basin with strong tectonic and climatic control on fluvial sediment transport. Combined with previous research focused on coastal sediments, this actualistic provenance study uses framework petrography and heavy-mineral data to trace multistep dispersal of volcaniclastic detritus first eastwards across central Argentina for up to ca. 1,500 km and next northwards for another 760 km along the Atlantic coast. Although detritus generated in the Andes is largely derived from mesosilicic volcanic rocks of the cordillera, its compositional signatures reflect different tectono-stratigraphic levels …
