Simulating 129-Xe Hyperpolarization, Jacob F. Abiad
Simulating 129-Xe Hyperpolarization, Jacob F. Abiad
Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
Hyperpolarized 129-Xe is an important resource in many fields of medical physics and MRI research. The physics of the efficient production of hyperpolarized 129-Xe is therefore equally worth investigation. The main process of hyperpolarizing 129-Xe is Spin Exchange Optical Pumping (SEOP) and is dependent on several physical factors that can be difficult to constantly change in a lab setting. Physical modelling of 129-Xe hyperpolarization allows for the more efficient testing of hyperpolarization physics in a wide array of experimental setups to better determine the optimal values for hyperpolarization. This research project attempted to create a working model for 129-Xe hyperpolarization …

Contemporary Mathematical Approaches To Computability Theory, Luis Guilherme Mazzali De Almeida
Contemporary Mathematical Approaches To Computability Theory, Luis Guilherme Mazzali De Almeida
Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
In this paper, I present an introduction to computability theory and adopt contemporary mathematical definitions of computable numbers and computable functions to prove important theorems in computability theory. I start by exploring the history of computability theory, as well as Turing Machines, undecidability, partial recursive functions, computable numbers, and computable real functions. I then prove important theorems in computability theory, such that the computable numbers form a field and that the computable real functions are continuous.

We have created a catalog of edge-on galaxies based on the publicly available DR2 data from the Pan-STARRS survey. The intensive use of an artificial neural network has significantly improved the quality of candidate selection. The catalog provides homogeneous information on astrometry, photometry, and non-parametric morphological statistics for 16551 edge-on galaxies. Our catalog is intended for studying the three-dimensional structure of galaxies with different morphologies and the scaling relations for disks and bulges.

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
The pathways and timing of drainage from the inundated centers of ice-wedge polygons in a warming climate have important implications for carbon flushing, advective heat transport, and transitions from methane to carbon dioxide dominated emissions. Here, we expand on previous research using a recently developed analytical model of drainage from a low-centered polygon. Specifically, we perform (1) a calibration to field data identifying necessary model refinements and (2) a rigorous model sensitivity analysis that expands on previously published indications of polygon drainage characteristics. This research provides intuition on inundated polygon drainage by presenting the first in-depth analysis of drainage within …

Effects Of Hunter Movement And Habitat Use On Observation Rate Of White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus), Alyssa N. Meier
Biology Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
Hunting by humans is the primary tool for population control for many ungulate species across the United States, including white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). Previous research has focused primarily on the effects of hunting on prey behavior while neglecting the potential effects hunter behavior has on the probability of harvest success. I examined the influence of hunter movement and habitat use across the landscape on observation rate of white-tailed deer. During the 2008 and 2009 Oklahoma hunting seasons, we recorded GPS and observation data of 83 individual hunters over 487 total hunts. Hunters that moved non-linearly through forested cover at a …
Reducing The Manual Annotation Effort For Handwriting Recognition Using Active Transfer Learning, Eric Burdett
Reducing The Manual Annotation Effort For Handwriting Recognition Using Active Transfer Learning, Eric Burdett
Theses and Dissertations
Handwriting recognition systems have achieved remarkable performance over the past several years with the advent of deep neural networks. For high-quality recognition, these models require large amounts of labeled training data, which can be difficult to obtain. Various methods to reduce this effort have been proposed in the realms of active and transfer learning, but not in combination. We propose a framework for fitting new handwriting recognition models that joins active and transfer learning into a unified framework. Empirical results show the superiority of our method compared to traditional active learning, transfer learning, or standard supervised training schemes.

A Transformer-Based Classification System For Volcanic Seismic Signals, Cristian Bravo Roman, Cindy Mora Stock, Alexander James Hemming
A Transformer-Based Classification System For Volcanic Seismic Signals, Cristian Bravo Roman, Cindy Mora Stock, Alexander James Hemming
Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
Volcanic seismic signals are a key element in volcano monitoring to assess the state of unrest and a possible eruption style and timing. Different sources such as brittle fracture (volcano-tectonic - VT) or fluid movement (long period - LP) generate signals with distinct characteristics in frequency content and shape, but site effects such as attenuation or background noise make their determination difficult to the untrained eye. In cases of unrest or an eminent eruption, the amount of data would require a fast and reliable source of pre-classification to classify and catalogue to aid in the job usually done by a …

Structural Tuning Of Two-Dimensional Perovskites At High Pressure, Lauren A. Diloreto
Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
Two-Dimensional Perovskites are semiconductors and are of interest to researchers as the class of materials show great promise for innovating improvements to solar cells. The purpose of this experiment is to determine if a metastable change will occur in the materials: DPDAPbI4 and CMA2PbI4 upon compression to approximately 9 GPa. The experiment was conducted using diamond anvil cells (DAC) to apply static pressure to the materials. The pressure of the sample was then measured using ruby fluorescence. Then, FTIR or Raman spectroscopy acquisitions were obtained at various pressures. Subsequently, the data suggests that a metastable change did not occur. Additionally, …
