Anthraquinone Extraction And Quantification, Modification Of The Pictet-Spengler Reaction For The Creation Of Useful Isotopes And Use In Protein Ligation, Jermell Williams
Anthraquinone Extraction And Quantification, Modification Of The Pictet-Spengler Reaction For The Creation Of Useful Isotopes And Use In Protein Ligation, Jermell Williams
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
The Pictet-Spengler reaction rates of three species known to exhibit the alpha effect will be compared to the rate of the amine functional group. This is part of a larger effort to to generate a bifunctional tool for protein ligation by attaching an alkyne or azide group to the amine. With this, the aldehyde tag method can be used to modify proteins in biological conditions cheaply, specifically, and efficiently.

Introduction Of Forage Legumes Into Pastures Of Three Different Grasses, Maria T. Colozza, Joaquim C. Werner, Luciana Gerdes, E. A. Schamass, J. C. T. Freitas
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
It was evaluated the introduction of a mixture of calopo, galaxia, perennial soybean, guata and stylo broadcsted into marandu, setaria and tanzania half-plots already established in three cafeterias, each one located inside a paddock of each grass. The legumes were seeded in the end of the Spring (12/07/98), after the plots had been cut down and fertilized. The cafeterias were grazed intermittently by buffaloes maintained in the three paddocks. The occurrence of the five legume plants was avaluated by countings (#/m2) effected in the middle of Autumn, Winter and Spring of 1999 and Summer of 2000. Along with …

Allelopathy Of Panicum Maximum Jacq. Cultivars On Tree And Shrub Forage Legumes: Tolerance Index, A. R. P. Almeida, T. J. D. Rodrigues
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
The objective of this work was to evaluate the tolerance of three forage legumes (Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit., Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp. cv. Kaki and Sesbania sesban (L.) Merr.) to the allelopathic effects of three cultivars of Panicum maximum Jacq. (cv. Mombaça, cv. Aruana and cv. Tanzânia-1), under greenhouse conditions. The root and shoot tolerance indexes were calculated using the data of dry mass of roots and shoots of plants cultivated in pots and moistened with water or aqueous extracts (0,10 and 20%) of the cultivars of P. maximum. The results indicated that: a) the root tolerance …
Incomplete? Or Indefinite? Intuitionism On Gödel’S First Incompleteness Theorem, Quinn Crawford
Incomplete? Or Indefinite? Intuitionism On Gödel’S First Incompleteness Theorem, Quinn Crawford
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
This paper analyzes two natural-looking arguments that seek to leverage Gödel’s first incompleteness theorem for and against intuitionism, concluding in both cases that the argument is unsound because it equivocates on the meaning of “proof,” which differs between formalism and intuitionism. I argue that this difference explains why “proof” has definite extension for the formalist but not for the intuitionist. Sections 1-3 summarize various philosophies of mathematics and Gödel’s result. Section 4 argues that, because the Gödel sentence of a formal system is provable to the intuitionist, they are neither aided nor attacked by Gödel’s first incompleteness theorem. Section 5 …
Sounding The Alarm: Down-Ballot Setback For The Democrats In 2020, Yaakov Huba
Sounding The Alarm: Down-Ballot Setback For The Democrats In 2020, Yaakov Huba
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
The 2020 general election turned out more American voters than any other election, its monumental stakes commanding the attention of the world. While the focus in the race’s aftermath has primarily been the top of the ticket, the rebuke of President Trump’s time in office, the equally important down-ballot races have been largely passed over. Many major political analysts like the Cook Political Report predicted that Democrats would expand their House majority by 5-10 seats. Yet, the Democratic Party ended up losing 10 seats1. During the certification of election results, I collected data on incumbents in the US House of …
Optimal Information Design In Two-Sided Trade, Pradhi Aggarwal
Optimal Information Design In Two-Sided Trade, Pradhi Aggarwal
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
In a two-sided market with a broker, the broker can influence the buyer’s and seller’s optimal trading behaviour through strategic information design. We study the impact of information about waiting times on riders and drivers in a rideshare market. We consider three information regimes: the first in which no information about time is revealed, the second in which true waiting times are communicated, and finally an intermediate regime in which agents are only told whether their waiting time falls within a high or low category. We evaluate the optimality of each information regime by maximizing welfare and revenue for each …

Development And Distribution Of Thermometry Hardware For The Simons Observatory, Samuel Day-Weiss
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
The Simons Observatory (SO) is a new cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment consisting of four telescopes. SO is being constructed at an elevation of 5,190 meters on Cerro Toco in the Atacama Desert in Chile, and is set to begin observation in 2022. SO will employ 60,000 detectors, yielding a sensitivity greater than all previous CMB experiments. To achieve low noise performance the telescope cryostats will be cooled to ~100 mK using low temperature dilution refrigerators. Measuring cryostat temperatures is essential for pre-deployment testing, telescope installation, and telescope monitoring during observation. The purpose of this project is to design, build, …

Transfer Learning For Low-Resource Part-Of-Speech Tagging, Jeffrey Zhou, Neha Verma
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
Neural network approaches to Part-of-Speech tagging, like other supervised neural network tasks, benefit from larger quantities of labeled data. However, in the case of low-resource languages, additional methods are necessary to improve the performances of POS taggers. In this paper, we explore transfer learning approaches to improve POS tagging in Afrikaans using a neural network. We investigate the effect of transferring network weights that were originally trained for POS tagging in Dutch. We also test the use of pretrained word embeddings in our POS tagger, both independently and in conjunction with the transferred weights from a Dutch POS tagger. We …
Designing A Microsecond-Long On-Chip Microwave Delay Line Using Srtio3 Dielectricity, Kazemi Adachi, Mingrui Xu, Hong Tang
Designing A Microsecond-Long On-Chip Microwave Delay Line Using Srtio3 Dielectricity, Kazemi Adachi, Mingrui Xu, Hong Tang
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
The delay line is a fundamental circuit design component which slows down a signal with minimal attenuation to provide delay effects, with applications that include interferometry and signal filtering. Cryogenic superconducting delay lines can be less lossy than their regularly conducting counterparts. Scientists can engineer microwave photos with coherence times of several microseconds (us), longer than current on-chip delays. We utilize the high dielectric constant (>10^4) of strontium titanate at cryogenic temperatures to slow own signal propagation on a coplanar waveguide. Here, we present a design for an on-chip 5 (us) superconducting delay line ad 5 GHz with small …
Applications Of Bayesian Inference For Modelling Dynamic Instability In Neuronal Dendrite Morphogenesis, Daniel Fridman
Applications Of Bayesian Inference For Modelling Dynamic Instability In Neuronal Dendrite Morphogenesis, Daniel Fridman
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
Neurons are complex biological systems which develop intricate morphologies and whose dendrites are essential in receiving and integrating input signals from neighboring neurons. While much research has been done on the role of dendrites in neuronal development, a further understanding of dendrite dynamics can provide insight into neural development and the cellular basis of neurological diseases such as schizophrenia, Down’s syndrome, and autism. The Jonathon Howard lab hypothesizes that microtubules are a primary driving force in dendrite dynamics. Since it is known that microtubules display dynamic instability, rapidly transitioning between growth, paused, and shrinking states, the Howard lab proposes a …

Compatibility Of Kura Clover And Cool Season Grass Mixtures In Michigan, P. Jeranyama, R. H. Leep, T. Dietz
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
Kura clover (Trifolium ambiguum Bieb.) is an alternative forage legume for rotational grazing in cool-season grass mixtures. However, compatibility with cool-season grasses is unknown. Seven cool-season perennial grasses were seeded into Kura clover in a rotational grazing experiment. The objectives of this study were to evaluate botanical composition, forage yield and quality of binary mixtures of cool-season grass with Kura clover. Field studies were conducted on a Nester (fine sandy loam) soil at Lake City Experiment Station, Lake City, MI. Botanical compositions in the first year of the study heavily favored grasses (avg. 74%) and Kura clover accounted for …

Production Of Orchard-Grass Cultivars (Dactylis Glomerata) In Mixtures With Alfalfa (Medicago Sativa), Under Grazing Conditions, R. A. Barbarossa, D. P. Miñón
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
In the Lower Valley of the Río Negro (northern Patagonia, Argentina), six binary mixtures of orchard-grass (Dactylis glomerata) cultivars (Porto, Currie, Filox, a Local ecotype, Pergamino El Cencerro MAG) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa) Monarca SP INTA, were tested under grazing and irrigation. Mixtures were evaluated during three growing seasons (96/97; 97/98 and 98/99). Total forage production of mixtures and botanical composition was measured (orchard-grass cultivars and alfalfa). Porto, Currie, Filox, Local and Cencerro cultivars reached similar yield, while Amba produced less forage (p< 0.05). Mixture yield showed no significant difference, except Porto + alfalfa, which was lower (p< 0.05). The grass was higher in spring (1st grazing) of three growing seasons. Orchard-grass + alfalfa showed highest dry matter …

Clayoquot Sound Harmful Algal Blooms Investigation Of Tofino Inlet – 2019, Lucy Kramer
Clayoquot Sound Harmful Algal Blooms Investigation Of Tofino Inlet – 2019, Lucy Kramer
Environmental Science Undergraduate Theses
The University of Washington Tacoma has conducted yearly summer research expeditions to Clayoquot Sound along the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia since in 2000. Data collected in the region examined the changing conditions in water properties at 86 different sites in Clayoquot Sound every summer. This research focused on the data collected from Tofino Inlet in 2019 and was compared to the Tofino Inlet data from 2014. Data was analyzed using GIS maps of nutrient distribution and contour profile plots to determine if rising temperatures from “the Blob”, a warm water anomaly, created more favorable conditions for harmful …
Encirclement Of Moving Targets Using Noisy Range And Bearing Measurements, Cammy Peterson, Puneet Jain, Randal Beard
Encirclement Of Moving Targets Using Noisy Range And Bearing Measurements, Cammy Peterson, Puneet Jain, Randal Beard
Faculty Publications
This paper presents theoretically justified controllers that use relative range and bearing measurements to steer a team of autonomous vehicles, operating without inertial position information, to circular trajectories around a constant-acceleration, constant-velocity, or stationary target. An extended Kalman filter is used to improve the noisy relative measurements and estimate the velocity of the moving target. These estimated values are used in the control laws to encircle constant-velocity moving targets. Lyapunov techniques are utilized to show that the vehicle will converge to the desired circular formations. Additionally, cooperating vehicles are shown to converge to a circular formation with equal temporal spacing …

The emergence of P2P(Peer-to-peer) lending has opened up a popular way for micro-finance, and the financial lending industry in many countries is growing rapidly. While it facilitates lending to individuals and small and medium-sized enterprises, improving the risk identification capability of the P2P platform is vitally necessary for the sustainable development of the platform. Especially the potential credit risk caused by information asymmetry, this may be fatal to this industry. In order to alleviate the adverse effects of this problem, this paper takes Lending Club’s real loan data as the empirical research object. The random forest is used to screen …
Modeling Weather Vulnerability Dynamically: Applications Of Multiple Linear Regression To Weather Index Microinsurance, Sophie Wu
Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
This paper offers a broad overview of the philanthropic goals of microinsurance — namely, to provide vulnerable populations with more self-sufficient and sustainable methods of coping with risk — and through this lens, analyses the applications of multiple linear regression in developing dynamic models for microinsurance. We explain the foundations of MLR (multiple linear regression), and then give two examples for how a simple multiple linear regression model can be adapted with a novel outcome variable (famine) and dependent variables (climate change related costs). Overall, a better understanding of MLR can lend to a better understanding of how microinsurance can …
International Grassland Congress Outlook – A Historical Review And Future Expectations, L. R. Humphreys
International Grassland Congress Outlook – A Historical Review And Future Expectations, L. R. Humphreys
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
Features of the history of the International Grassland Congress are mentioned. Aspects of a number of failed themes in grassland science are described with respect to molecular biology, intensive systems of ruminant production, carbohydrate use in plant growth, plant succession and range condition, and stocking method. Future expectations are focused on meeting a balance of objectives, maintaining reductionist science, taking new initiatives in plant improvement and in the development of animal production systems, and reducing barriers to international trade. The adoption of grassland science depends upon the growth of new learning, especially through cyclical interaction between scientists and farmers.

Grassland Production And Management – Trends And Perspectives For The 21St Century, John Hodgson
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
The XIX International Congress is set in a time of unprecedented change, with increasing uncertainty about the long-term sustainability of established systems of land use. The major threats are the continuing rapid increase in the human population of the world, the pressure on land resources to meet food requirements, the effects of global warming on climate stability, and the consequence of these factors on land resource stability and food production potential. Overlying these threats is the impact of the global economy on land use policies.
Projections made at the XVIII International Grassland Congress in 1997 suggested that food production could …
