Modern And Paleo Perspectives On The Role Of The Westerlies In Glaciation, Alexander Audet Aug 2021

Modern And Paleo Perspectives On The Role Of The Westerlies In Glaciation, Alexander Audet

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Deciphering causes of glaciations and their abrupt terminations over the last >700,000 yrs remains an important problem for understanding the behavior of the climate system and how it might change in the future. In particular, the role of the Southern Hemisphere (SH) Westerlies in global change has arisen as an important research direction. Glaciers are highly sensitive to climate change. Examination of mid-latitude glaciers under the influence of westerly wind systems in both hemispheres can help provide insight into the role of the Westerlies in climate change. In this thesis, I present a twofold strategy to refine knowledge of the …

Quantifying Surface Changes On Mcmurdo Ice Shelf, Antarctica, Ann M. Hill Aug 2021

Quantifying Surface Changes On Mcmurdo Ice Shelf, Antarctica, Ann M. Hill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The amount of ice stored in Antarctica has the potential to raise sea level by almost 60 meters. Mass is primarily lost through glaciers draining the ice sheet and flowing into and ice shelves. Ice shelves float on the ocean and act as a resisting force to the flow of the glaciers, thereby modulating the flow of tributary glaciers, and consequently glacier contribution to global sea level rise. McMurdo Ice Shelf (MIS) buttresses four tributary glaciers, three of which will be discussed in this thesis, as well as the northwest corner of the faster flowing Ross Ice Shelf, which has …

Sulfur Isotope Composition Of Sulfides In Mafic Cumulates, Lesser Antilles Arc, Tyler Pollock Aug 2021

Sulfur Isotope Composition Of Sulfides In Mafic Cumulates, Lesser Antilles Arc, Tyler Pollock

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The sulfur isotope composition of sulfides in igneous rocks from magmatic arcs can be difficult to constrain due to the tendency for sulfur isotopes to fractionate during magma ascent and degassing. Cumulate xenoliths from the lower arc crust are representative of the most primitive magmas of the arc system. The Lesser Antilles arc presents a unique opportunity to investigate the sulfur isotope composition of arc magmas along a magmatic arc with many different magma plumbing systems. Here we present sulfur isotope compositions for primary magmatic sulfide inclusions and secondary interstitial hydrothermal sulfides in mafic cumulates from ten islands along the …

Forest Park Trail Monitoring, Adan Robles, Colton S. Maybee, Erin Dougherty Aug 2021

Forest Park Trail Monitoring, Adan Robles, Colton S. Maybee, Erin Dougherty

REU Final Reports

Forest Park, one of the largest public parks in the United States with over 40 trails to pick from when planning a hiking trip. One of the main problems this park has is that there are too many trails, and a lot of the trails extend over 3 miles. Due to these circumstances’ trails are not checked frequently and hikers are forced to hike trails in the area with no warnings of potential hazards they can encounter. In this paper I researched how Forest Park currently monitors its trails and then set up a goal to solve the problem. We …

Spatial Analysis Of Landscape Characteristics, Anthropogenic Factors, And Seasonality Effects On Water Quality In Portland, Oregon, Katherine Gelsey, Daniel Ramirez

REU Final Reports

Urban areas often struggle with deteriorated water quality as a result of complex interactions between landscape factors such as land cover, use, and management as well as climatic variables such as weather, precipitation, and atmospheric conditions. Green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) has been introduced as a strategy to reintroduce pre-development hydrological conditions in cities, but questions remain as to how GSI interacts with other landscape factors to affect water quality. We conducted a statistical analysis of six relevant water quality indicators in 131 water quality stations in four watersheds around Portland, Oregon using data from 2015 to 2021. Indiscriminate of station …

The result of the visual inception of the residual map reveals that the area comprises an extremely irregular pattern of magnetic intensities that range from 220 to 240 nT. Two structural features of folding evidence were also delineated in the area namely; uplift and depression. The result of the lineament structures …

Re-Visiting Acoustic Sounding To Advance The Measurement Of Optical Turbulence, Steven T. Fiorino, Santasri Bose-Pillai, Kevin J. Keefer Aug 2021

Re-Visiting Acoustic Sounding To Advance The Measurement Of Optical Turbulence, Steven T. Fiorino, Santasri Bose-Pillai, Kevin J. Keefer

Faculty Publications

Optical turbulence, as determined by the widely accepted practice of profiling the temperature structure constant, C2T, via the measurement of ambient atmospheric temperature gradients, can be found to differ quite significantly when characterizing such gradients via thermal-couple differential temperature sensors as compared to doing so with acoustic probes such as those commonly used in sonic anemometry. Similar inconsistencies are observed when comparing optical turbulence strength derived via C2T as compared to those through direct optical or imaging measurements of small fluctuations of the index of refraction of air (i.e., scintillation). These irregularities are especially apparent …

Discriminative Region-Based Multi-Label Zero-Shot Learning, Sanath Narayan, Akshita Gupta, Salman Khan, Fahad Shahbaz Khan, Ling Shao, Mubarak Shah Aug 2021

Discriminative Region-Based Multi-Label Zero-Shot Learning, Sanath Narayan, Akshita Gupta, Salman Khan, Fahad Shahbaz Khan, Ling Shao, Mubarak Shah

Computer Vision Faculty Publications

Multi-label zero-shot learning (ZSL) is a more realistic counter-part of standard single-label ZSL since several objects can co-exist in a natural image. However, the occurrence of multiple objects complicates the reasoning and requires region-specific processing of visual features to preserve their contextual cues. We note that the best existing multi-label ZSL method takes a shared approach towards attending to region features with a common set of attention maps for all the classes. Such shared maps lead to diffused attention, which does not discriminatively focus on relevant locations when the number of classes are large. Moreover, mapping spatially-pooled visual features to …

To Know The Land With Hands And Minds: Negotiating Agricultural Knowledge In Late-Nineteenth-Century New England And Westphalia, Justus Hillebrand

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ever since the eighteenth century, experts have tried to tell farmers how to farm. The agricultural enlightenment in Europe marked the beginning of a long arc of new experts aiming to change agricultural knowledge and practice. This dissertation analyzes the pivotal period in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century in Germany and the United States when scientists, improvers, and market agents began to develop comprehensive ways to communicate agricultural innovation to farmers. In a functional approach to analyzing the negotiation of agricultural knowledge through its communication in things, words, and practices, this dissertation argues that the process of change …
