United States Geological Survey: Water Reports and Publications

The Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative (WLCI) was established in 2007 as a collaborative interagency partnership to develop and implement science-based conservation actions. During the past 11 years, partners from U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), State and Federal land management agencies, universities, and the public have collaborated to implement a long-term (more than 10 years) science-based program that assesses and enhances the quality and quantity of wildlife habitats in the southwest Wyoming region while facilitating responsible development. The USGS WLCI Science Team completes scientific research and develops tools that inform and support WLCI partner planning, decision making, and on-the-ground management actions.

A Look Into User Privacy And Third-Party Applications In Facebook, Sovantharith Seng, Mahdi Nasrullah Al-Ameen, Matthew Wright

Computer Science Faculty and Staff Publications

Purpose

A huge amount of personal and sensitive data are shared on Facebook, which makes it a prime target for attackers. Adversaries can exploit third-party applications connected to a user’s Facebook profiles (i.e. Facebook apps) to gain access to this personal information. Users’ lack of knowledge and the varying privacy policies of these apps make them further vulnerable to information leakage. However, little has been done to identify mismatches between users’ perceptions and the privacy policies of Facebook apps. This paper aims to address this challenge in the work.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors conducted a lab study with 31 participants, where …

Raising Algorithm Bias Awareness Among Computer Science Students Through Library And Computer Science Instruction, Shalini Ramachandran, Steven Matthew Cutchin, Sheree Fu

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

We are a computer science professor and two librarians who work closely with computer science students. In this paper, we outline the development of an introductory algorithm bias instruction session. As part of our lesson development, we analyzed the results of a survey we conducted of computer science students at three universities on their perceptions about search-engine and big-data algorithms. We examined whether an information literacy component focused on algorithmic bias was beneficial to offer to students in the computational sciences and designed an instructional prototype. We studied qualitative data, including feedback from students and colleagues on our initial instruction …

Content Analysis Of Two-Year And Four-Year Data Science Programs In The United States, Elizabeth Milonas, Duo Li, Qiping Zhang

Publications and Research

Data has grown exponentially in the last decade, and this growth has resulted in vast challenges for both business and IT domains (Hassan & Liu, 2019). This growth has given rise to the Data Science field, which has also grown exponentially in the last few years (Hassan & Liu, 2019; Song & Zhu, 2016). The Data Science field has its origins in the statistics and mathematics domain (Cao, 2017b), but is now considered a multidisciplinary field (Aasheim et al., 2015). Data Science warrants knowledge of data analytics, programming, systems, applications, informatics, computing, communication, management, and sociology (Aasheim et al., 2015; …

Using Data Science To Create An Impact On A City Life And To Encourage Students From Underserved Communities To Get Into Stem, Elena Filatova, Deborah Hecht

Publications and Research

In this paper, we introduce a novel methodology for teaching Data Science. Our methodology relies on the outlook of the student body in our college. Our college is an urban, commuter, HSI (Hispanic Serving Institution) school with 34% Hispanic and 29% Black students. 61% of our students come from households with an income of less than $30,000+. Thus, many students in our college come from the communities that are underrepresented in the STEM fields and in the decision-making positions in the government (on the city level, state level, country level). However, in our methodology, we want to flip the situation …

Regional Characteristics And Variability Of Extreme Precipitation And Atmospheric Rivers In Past, Present, And Future Climates Over The Contiguous United States, Emily Anne Slinskey Jul 2021

Regional Characteristics And Variability Of Extreme Precipitation And Atmospheric Rivers In Past, Present, And Future Climates Over The Contiguous United States, Emily Anne Slinskey

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the regional and seasonal variability of extreme precipitation and atmospheric rivers (ARs) across the contiguous United States (CONUS) in past, present, and future climates. An extreme precipitation categorization scheme, designed to monitor and track the multi-scale variability of extreme precipitation, is applied to a range of precipitation measurement products as an assessment of observational uncertainty. To investigate the importance of ARs across the CONUS, an objective AR identification algorithm is applied to global reanalysis to identify and characterize AR characteristics regionally over the observational record. Projected change in AR day frequency, geometry, intensity, and associated precipitation is …

Single-Crystal Elasticity Of Tremolite At High-Pressure Conditions And Its Implication For The Mid-Lithospheric Discontinuity, Soisiri Charin Jul 2021

Single-Crystal Elasticity Of Tremolite At High-Pressure Conditions And Its Implication For The Mid-Lithospheric Discontinuity, Soisiri Charin

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Tremolite is the calcium magnesium amphibole that widely occurs in igneous and metamorphic rocks of the crustal and upper mantle lithosphere, especially in the greenschist facies to amphibolite facies of ultramafic assemblages. The stability field of amphibole reaches 3-4 GPa and 1100-1200°C depending on water content and cation substitutions giving rise to amphibole to occur in highly variable compositions. This P-T condition, corresponding to the depth about 80-120 km, coincides with the depth range that a negative velocity gradient usually found within most stable cratonic lithospheres. This depth range is seismically called Mid-lithosphere discontinuity (MLD). The geologic processes that might …

Non-Archimedean Models Of Morphogenesis, Wilson A. Zuniga-Galindo Jul 2021

Non-Archimedean Models Of Morphogenesis, Wilson A. Zuniga-Galindo

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

We study a p-adic reaction-diffusion system and the associated Turing patterns. We establish an instability criteria and show that the Turing patterns are not classical patterns consisting of alternating domains. Instead of this, a Turing pattern consists of several domains (clusters), each of them supporting a different pattern but with the same parameter values. This type of patterns are typically produced by reaction-diffusion equations on large networks.

Chemistry and Physics Faculty Articles

PrimPol is the second primase in human cells, the first with the ability to start DNA chains with dNTPs. PrimPol contributes to DNA damage tolerance by restarting DNA synthesis beyond stalling lesions, acting as a TLS primase. Multiple alignment of eukaryotic PrimPols allowed us to identify a highly conserved motif, WxxY near the invariant motif A, which contains two active site metal ligands in all members of the archeo-eukaryotic primase (AEP) superfamily. In vivo and in vitro analysis of single variants of the WFYY motif of human PrimPol demonstrated that the invariant Trp87 and Tyr90 residues are essential …

Seismic Imaging In Crystalline Terrains Of The Superior Province, Canada, Brian Villamizar Jul 2021

Seismic Imaging In Crystalline Terrains Of The Superior Province, Canada, Brian Villamizar

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The imaging of structures in sedimentary basins has typically been carried out using conventional seismic reflection techniques. In complex geological architectures, such as those within the Superior Province in Canada, conventional seismic imaging yields suboptimal results due to factors stemming from complex energy scattering and crooked seismic geometries. Full-waveform inversion (FWI) is a nonlinear inverse technique capable of retrieving quantitative images of velocity structures. Judicious data preconditioning, and multiscale inversion strategies allow FWI to effectively estimate velocity variations in the first few kilometers of the subsurface. Non-conventional seismic reflection processing, based on azimuthal binning and enhanced migration velocity models, improves …
