Towards The Homotopy Type Of The Morse Complex, Connor Donovan Jul 2021

Towards The Homotopy Type Of The Morse Complex, Connor Donovan

Mathematics Summer Fellows

Mathematicians have long been interested in studying the properties of simplicial complexes. In 1998, Robin Forman developed gradient vector fields as a tool to study these complexes. Having gradient vector fields to study these simplicial complexes, in 2005, Chari and Joswig discovered the Morse complex, a complex consisting of all gradient vector fields on a fixed complex. Although the Morse complex has been studied since 2005, there is little information regarding its homotopy type for different simplicial complexes. Pursuing our curiosity of the topic, we extend a result by Ayala et. al., stating that the pure Morse complex of a …

Lagrangian And Eulerian Accelerations In Turbulent Stratified Shear Flows, Frank G. Jacobitz, Kai Schneider Jul 2021

Lagrangian And Eulerian Accelerations In Turbulent Stratified Shear Flows, Frank G. Jacobitz, Kai Schneider

School of Engineering: Faculty Scholarship

The Lagrangian and Eulerian acceleration properties of fluid particles in homogeneous turbulence with uniform shear and uniform stable stratification are studied using direct numerical simulations. The Richardson number is varied from Ri=0, corresponding to unstratified shear flow, to Ri=1, corresponding to strongly stratified shear flow. The probability density functions (pdfs) of both Lagrangian and Eulerian accelerations have a stretched-exponential shape and they show a strong and similar influence on the Richardson number. The extreme values of the Eulerian acceleration are stronger than those observed for the Lagrangian acceleration. Geometrical statistics explain that the magnitude of the Eulerian acceleration is larger …

Energy Optimization In Multi-Uav-Assisted Edge Data Collection System, Bin Xu, Lu Zhang, Zipeng Xu, Yichuan Liu, Jinming Chai, Sichong Qin, Yanfei Sun

Student Published Works

In the IoT (Internet of Things) system, the introduction of UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) as a new data collection platform can solve the problem that IoT devices are unable to transmit data over long distances due to the limitation of their battery energy. However, the unreasonable distribution of UAVs will still lead to the problem of the high total energy consumption of the system. In this work, to deal with the problem, a deployment model of a mobile edge computing (MEC) system based on multi-UAV is proposed. The goal of the model is to minimize the energy consumption of the …

Recognizing the imperative to evaluate species recovery and conservation impact, in 2012 the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) called for development of a “Green List of Species” (now the IUCN Green Status of Species). A draft Green Status framework for assessing species’ progress toward recovery, published in 2018, proposed 2 separate but interlinked components: a standardized method (i.e., measurement against benchmarks of species’ viability, functionality, and preimpact distribution) to determine current species recovery status (herein species recovery score) and application of that method to estimate past and potential future impacts of conservation based on 4 metrics ( …

Positive Solutions For The Fractional Schrödinger Equations With Logarithmic And Critical Non-Linearities, Haining Fan, Zhaosheng Feng, Xingjie Yan Jul 2021

Positive Solutions For The Fractional Schrödinger Equations With Logarithmic And Critical Non-Linearities, Haining Fan, Zhaosheng Feng, Xingjie Yan

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper, we study a class of fractional Schrödinger equations involving logarithmic and critical non-linearities on an unbounded domain, and show that such an equation with positive or sign-changing weight potentials admits at least one positive ground state solution and the associated energy is positive (or negative). By applying the Nehari manifold method and Ljusternik–Schnirelmann category, we investigate how the weight potential affects the multiplicity of positive solutions, and obtain the relationship between the number of positive solutions and the category of some sets related to the weight potential.

Chemistry Publications

Welders are daily exposed to various levels of welding fumes containing several metals. This exposure can lead to an increased risk for different health effects which serves as a driving force to develop new methods that generate less toxic fumes. The aim of this study was to explore the role of released metals for welding particle-induced toxicity and to test the hypothesis that a reduction of Cr(VI) in welding fumes results in less toxicity by comparing the welding fume particles of optimized Cr(VI)-reduced flux-cored wires (FCWs) to standard FCWs. The welding particles were thoroughly characterized, and toxicity (cell viability, DNA …

Climate Model Evaluation Of Atmospheric Rivers Over The Contiguous United States, Ilan González-Hirshfeld Jul 2021

Climate Model Evaluation Of Atmospheric Rivers Over The Contiguous United States, Ilan González-Hirshfeld

Dissertations and Theses

Atmospheric rivers (ARs)--long corridors of intense atmospheric water vapor transport--significantly influence the hydrologic cycle and regional hydrometeorological extremes across the contiguous United States (CONUS). Ongoing and future climate change may alter AR characteristics and impacts, making confident climate model projections of future change, especially at regional scales, of critical importance. In order to better constrain uncertainty in such projections of future change, we perform a comprehensive climate model evaluation of AR climatology over the CONUS. Using an established AR detection algorithm, we evaluate the representation of ARs in historical simulations (1984-2013) from a suite of models participating in the sixth …

Secure Coding In Five Steps, Mini Zeng, Feng Zhu Jul 2021

Secure Coding In Five Steps, Mini Zeng, Feng Zhu

Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice

Software vulnerabilities have become a severe cybersecurity issue. There are numerous resources of industry best practices available, but it is still challenging to effectively teach secure coding practices. The resources are not designed for classroom usage because the amount of information is overwhelming for students. There are efforts in academia to introduce secure coding components into computer science curriculum, but a big gap between industry best practices and workforce skills still exists. Unlike many existing efforts, we focus on both the big picture of secure coding and hands-on projects. To achieve these two goals, we present five learning steps that …

Observations, Evaluations, And Recommendations For Deterlab From An Educational Perspective, Ahmed Ibrahim, Vitaly Ford

Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice

DETERLab is a cluster environment that provides a set of virtual machines that can be used by researchers and teachers to run cybersecurity experiments and competitions, and where it is possible to deploy different network configurations to research attack and defense mechanisms in the cyber world. While we were working to develop a pathway for producing more usable and effective cybersecurity educational resources by investigating and examining several projects, we examined DETERLab as a prospective platform to use in the classroom. Throughout our experimentation, we faced challenges that we decided to document in order to help other educators use the …

An Exploratory Study Of Mode Efficacy In Cybersecurity Training, Michael D. Workman Jul 2021

An Exploratory Study Of Mode Efficacy In Cybersecurity Training, Michael D. Workman

Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice

Cybersecurity capabilities in organizations and governmental agencies continue to lag behind the threats. Given the current environment, these entities have placed renewed emphasis on cybersecurity education. However, education appears to lack its full potential in most settings. Few empirical studies have systematically tested the efficacy of various training methods and modes, and those that have been conducted have yielded inconsistent findings. Recent literature on the use of gamified simulations have suggested that they may improve cybersecurity behaviors. Similarly, live activities such as hackathons and capture the flag events have been surmised to augment learning and capabilities. We conducted an exploratory …

Collaborative Development Of Spatial Audio Virtual Environments, George V. Landon, Austin K. Jaquith Jul 2021

Collaborative Development Of Spatial Audio Virtual Environments, George V. Landon, Austin K. Jaquith

Frameless

Access to the newest features of Virtual Reality headsets has become increasingly more accessible to student developers in recent years. Manufacturers are competing to support all available device features not just through their Software Development Kits (SDKs), but also integrated into industry-standard game engines. One particular feature, spatial sound, can now be deployed without directly accessing the SDK but instead modifying deployment settings and selecting checkboxes. This accessibility to new VR developers has opened up new opportunities for inter-disciplinary collaborations within constrained development cycles like an academic semester.

Rotateentry: Controller-Rolling-Style Text Entry For Three Degrees Of Freedom Virtual Reality Devices, Ziming Li, Roshan Peiris

Frameless

In this work, we propose RotateEntry, a controller-rolling-style method for text entry on three degrees of freedom virtual reality devices. To move the key-selecting cursor in two dimensions on a QWERTY layout virtual keyboard, we developed three variants of RotateEntry: Rotate Column Rotate, Rotate Key, and Rotate Column Point. We conducted a comparative empirical evaluation of the four text input methods, including three proposed controller-rolling-style text input methods and the standard raycasting-style one. Text entry performance, accuracy, workload, usability, and user experience were tested and evaluated. Due to the COVID-19 situation, our study was conducted remotely. The impact of using …

Aware: Eliminating Implicit Bias Using Ar, Shagun Bose, Emma Strauch

Frameless

Implicit Bias is something that happens to real people in real spaces all the time. But we can’t see it. Since, AR allows us to overlay virtual objects in real environments, we tried to leverage AR to make more salient the various ways in which people experience bias.
