The RND family efflux pump AcrAB-TolC in E. coli and its homologs in other Gram-negative bacteria are major players in conferring multidrug resistance to the cells. While the structure of the pump complex has been elucidated with ever-increasing resolution through crystallography and Cryo-EM efforts, the dynamic assembly process remains poorly understood. Here, we tested the effect of overexpressing functionally defective pump components in wild type E. coli cells to probe the pump assembly process. Incorporation of a defective component is expected to reduce the efflux efficiency of the complex, leading to the so called “dominant negative” effect. Being one of …

Consistent time series rainfall datasets are important in performing climate trend analyses and agro-hydrological modeling. However, temporally consistent ground-based and long-term observed rainfall data are usually lacking for such analyses, especially in mountainous and developing countries. In the absence of such data, satellite-derived rainfall products, such as the Climate Hazard Infrared Precipitations with Stations (CHIRPS) and Global Precipitation Measurement Integrated Multi-SatellitE Retrieval (GPM-IMERG) can be used. However, as their performance varies from region to region, it is of interest to evaluate the accuracy of satellite-derived rainfall products at the basin scale using ground-based observations. In this study, we evaluated and …
Discrete Dynamics Of Dynamic Neural Fields, Eddy Kwessi
Discrete Dynamics Of Dynamic Neural Fields, Eddy Kwessi
Mathematics Faculty Research
Large and small cortexes of the brain are known to contain vast amounts of neurons that interact with one another. They thus form a continuum of active neural networks whose dynamics are yet to be fully understood. One way to model these activities is to use dynamic neural fields which are mathematical models that approximately describe the behavior of these congregations of neurons. These models have been used in neuroinformatics, neuroscience, robotics, and network analysis to understand not only brain functions or brain diseases, but also learning and brain plasticity. In their theoretical forms, they are given as ordinary or …

Rare species population dynamics can elucidate the resilience of an ecosystem. On coral reefs, climate change and local anthropogenic stressors are threatening stony coral persistence, increasing the need to assess vulnerable species locally. Here, we monitored the threatened pillar coral, Dendrogyra cylindrus, population in southeast Florida, USA, in relation to consecutive heat stress events in 2014 and 2015. In the fall of each year, D. cylindrus colonies bleached following intense thermal stress and by June 2020 all monitored colonies died from a white-syndrome type disease. This resulted in the ecological extinction of D. cylindrus in the Southeast Florida Coral …
Efficient Metadata Lookup In Inline Deduplication Systems Leveraging Block Similarity, Rakesh Gururaj
Efficient Metadata Lookup In Inline Deduplication Systems Leveraging Block Similarity, Rakesh Gururaj
Master's Projects
Data deduplication is a concept of physically storing a single instance of data by eliminating redundant copies to save the storage space. The adoption of deduplication is minimal in actively accessed primary storage because of its complexities, such as random access patterns to data and the need for quicker request response time. Most of the solutions designed for primary storage are offline and dependent on the concept of locality. This paper proposes an inline deduplication system with a Machine Learning based cache eviction policy to reduce the metadata overhead in the deduplication process, eliminate the redundant writes and improve the …

In this article, a Host-Based Intrusion Detection System (HIDS) using a Modified Vector Space Representation (MVSR) N-gram and Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) model for securing the Internet of Things (IoT), based on lightweight techniques and using Fog Computing devices, is proposed. The Australian Defence Force Academy Linux Dataset (ADFA-LD), which contains exploits and attacks on various applications, is employed for the analysis. The proposed method is divided into the feature extraction stage, the feature selection stage, and classification modeling. To maintain the lightweight criteria, the feature extraction stage considers a combination of 1-gram and 2-gram for the system call encoding. In …

The avifauna of Guam was devastated by the introduction of the Brown Treesnake, and the restoration of native birds would need to address the problem with eradication or suppression of BTS. With eradication of the snake unlikely in the near term, and suppression capabilities limited to specific finite areas, key information for reintroductions is how low BTS abundance will likely need to be for each bird species to be re-established based on their vulnerability to BTS predation. Here, we estimate vulnerability, which can no longer be measured directly, so biologists who are familiar with one or more of seven Guam …

The space-based gravitational wave detector Laser Interferometric Space Antenna is expected to observe signals from a large population of compact object binaries, comprised predominantly of white dwarfs, in the Milky Way. Resolving individual sources from this population against its self-generated confusion noise poses a major data analysis problem. We present an iterative source estimation and subtraction method to address this problem based on the use of particle swarm optimization (PSO). In addition to PSO, a novel feature of the method is the cross-validation of sources estimated from the same data using different signal parameter search ranges. This is found to …

Geological Lineament Assessment From Passive And Active Remote Sensing Imageries, Ainyyafiatty Arifin, Nor A. Adnan
International Journal of Geospatial and Environmental Research
Lineament is any extensive linear feature on the Earth’s surface that can be identified when there is a change in the topographical data. The advancement of technologies in remote sensing and Geographical Information Sciences (GIS) lead to the various studies and methods in mapping lineaments due to the availability of data from small to large scale areas. Lineament can be extracted from remote sensing data either with manual, semi-automatic or automatic image processing techniques that incorporate in numerous remote sensing and GIS software. Manually digitizing or tracing the aerial photograph is a subjective method as the lineament will be interpreted …

Simulation Study For Penalized Bayesian Elastic Net Quantile Regression, Muntadher Hashim Mnati, Ahmed Naeem Falih
Al-Qadisiyah Journal of Pure Science
Bayesian regression analysis has great importance in recent years, especially in the Regularization method, Such as ridge, Lasso, adaptive lasso, elastic net methods, where choosing the prior distribution of the interested parameter is the main idea in the Bayesian regression analysis. By penalizing the Bayesian regression model, the variance of the estimators are reduced notable and the bias is getting smaller. The tradeoff between the bias and variance of the penalized Bayesian regression estimator consequently produce more interpretable model with more prediction accuracy. In this paper, we proposed new hierarchical model for the Bayesian quantile regression by employing the scale …

Al-Qadisiyah Journal of Pure Science
The compound 4-Azido-N-(6-chloro-3-pyridazinyl)benzenesulfonamide was synthesized and studied using FTIR, and 1H-NMR . The influence of a solvent on the experimental 1H-NMR chemical shifts of title compound is discussed. Small chemical shift Δδ < 0.1 ppm were observed when switching from DMSO-d6 to CD3OD. Record a marked change in chemical shifts valeues Δδ > 0.3 ppm when transform from high-polar solvents (DMSO-d6,and CD3OD) to low-polar solvent (CDCl3). The 1H-NMR chemical shifts of C2-H and C6-H were shown to have excellent linear correlation with the dielectric constants of the solvents DMSO-d6, CD3OD,and CDCl3 (r = 0.995). The 1H-NMR chemical shifts of C18-H shows a perfect relationship with solvatochromic parameter β (r = 0.999).

Many children with cerebral palsy (CP) experience the secondary condition of pain, which is problematic because children with CP face barriers to participation in motor skill activities.1,2 Motor performance in activities of daily living among children with CP is markedly lower than that among their age-matched peers.3 Because of the potential effect of pain on children with CP, we sought to examine the association between pain and activities requiring motor skill performance (ie, difficulty dressing or bathing and participation in sport) among a nationally representative sample of US children with CP.

Effective patient–provider communication is a cornerstone of patient-centered care. Patient portals provide an effective method for secure communication between patients or their proxies and their health care providers. With greater acceptability of patient portals in private practices, patients have a unique opportunity to manage their health care needs. However, studies have shown that less than 50% of patients reported accessing the electronic health record (EHR) in a 12-month period. We used HINTS 5 cycle 1 and cycle 2 to assess disparities among US residents 18 and older with any chronic condition regarding the use of EHR for secure direct messaging …

Selection Rule For Topological Amplifiers In Bogoliubov De Gennes Systems, Hong Y. Ling, Ben Kain
College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research
Dynamical instability is an inherent feature of bosonic systems described by the Bogoliubov de Geenes (BdG) Hamiltonian. Since it causes the BdG system to collapse, it is generally thought that it should be avoided. Recently, there has been much effort to harness this instability for the benefit of creating a topological amplifier with stable bulk bands but unstable edge modes which can be populated at an exponentially fast rate. We present a theorem for determining the stability of states with energies sufficiently away from zero, in terms of an unconventional commutator between the number conserving part and number nonconserving part …

The goal of the EXport Processes in the Ocean from RemoTe Sensing (EXPORTS) field campaign is to develop a predictive understanding of the export, fate, and carbon cycle impacts of global ocean net primary production. To accomplish this goal, observations of export flux pathways, plankton community composition, food web processes, and optical, physical, and biogeochemical (BGC) properties are needed over a range of ecosystem states. Here we introduce the first EXPORTS field deployment to Ocean Station Papa in the Northeast Pacific Ocean during summer of 2018, providing context for other papers in this special collection. The experiment was conducted with …
