Gate-Tunable Optical Extinction Of Graphene Nanoribbon Nanoclusters, Erin Sheridan, Gang Li, Mamun Sarker, Shan Hao, Ki-Tae Eom, Chang-Beom Eom, Alexander Sinitskii, Patrick Irvin, Jeremy Levy
Chemistry Department: Faculty Publications
We investigate the optical response of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) using the broadband nonlinear generation and detection capabilities of nanoscale junctions created at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface. GNR nanoclusters measured to be as small as 1–2 GNRs in size are deposited on the LaAlO3 surface with an atomic force microscope tip. Time-resolved nonlinear optical probes of GNR nanoclusters reveal a strong, gate-tunable second and third harmonic response, as well as strong extinction of visible to near-infrared light at distinct wavelengths, similar to previous reports with graphene.

Handgrip strength is a widely used measure of muscle strength and a predictor of a range of morbidities including cardiovascular diseases and all-cause mortality. Previous genome-wide association studies of handgrip strength have focused on common variants primarily in persons of European descent. We aimed to identify rare and ancestry-specific genetic variants associated with handgrip strength by conducting whole-genome sequence association analyses using 13,552 participants from six studies representing diverse population groups from the Trans-Omics in Precision Medicine (TOPMed) Program. By leveraging multiple handgrip strength measures performed in study participants over time, we increased our effective sample size by 7-12%. Single-variant …

Despite similar incidence rates, Heat Vulnerability Index (HVI) in rural areas is under- studied in comparison to urban areas. • The environmental vulnerability variables in rural areas are dissimilar to urban areas, so we applied different variables to calculate them. • We found different organization of socioeconomic variables in calculated HVIs, suggesting separate heat strategies for urbanization levels.
Heatwaves cause excess mortality and physiological impacts on humans throughout the world, and climate change will intensify and increase the frequency of heat events. Many adaptation and mitigation studies use spatial distribution of highly vulnerable local populations to inform heat reduction and …

Preparation And Characterization Of Single Layer Conducting Polymer Electrochromic And Touchchromic Devices, Sharan Kumar Indrakar
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Electrochromic devices (ECDs) have triggered great interest because of their potential applicability in energy-efficient buildings and low power display systems, including reflective type smart windows/mirrors and wearable-flexible devices. In the past decades, electrochromic technologies with different device structures and materials have been proposed. The idea of employing a simple device structure with a durable, cost effective electrolyte is crucial to designing and manufacturing high-performance ECDs. With this idea in mind, this thesis describes the various efforts to develop a simple ECD comprising of a composite single active layer gel electrolyte, sandwiched between two transparent conducting electrodes, lasting over 10,000 cycles …
An Exploration Of Controlling The Content Learned By Deep Neural Networks, Liqun Yang
An Exploration Of Controlling The Content Learned By Deep Neural Networks, Liqun Yang
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With the great success of the Deep Neural Network (DNN), how to get a trustworthy model attracts more and more attention. Generally, people intend to provide the raw data to the DNN directly in training. However, the entire training process is in a black box, in which the knowledge learned by the DNN is out of control. There are many risks inside. The most common one is overfitting. With the deepening of research on neural networks, additional and probably greater risks were discovered recently. The related research shows that unknown clues can hide in the training data because of the …
Numerical And Field Study Of Tidal And Subtidal Dynamics In A Bar-Built Estuary: Barataria Bay, Gulf Of Mexico, Ali Reza Payandeh
Numerical And Field Study Of Tidal And Subtidal Dynamics In A Bar-Built Estuary: Barataria Bay, Gulf Of Mexico, Ali Reza Payandeh
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study investigated tidal and subtidal dynamics of water level, currents, and suspended sediment concentration (SSC) in Barataria Bay, a shallow bar-built estuary of the Northern Gulf of Mexico. First, the local and remote wind forcing contribution on subtidal water level and current variability were examined using three different methods: (i) statistical analysis of observed data, (ii) an analytical model and (iii) a 2-D barotropic numerical model. Results suggested that the remote and local wind effects were equally important at the bay mouth, however local winds were the dominant forcing driver inside the bay. The amplitudes of subtidal fluctuations induced …

Traveling Wave Solutions For Two Species Competitive Chemotaxis Systems, T. B. Issa, R. B. Salako, W. Shen
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
In this paper, we consider two species chemotaxis systems with Lotka–Volterra competition reaction terms. Under appropriate conditions on the parameters in such a system, we establish the existence of traveling wave solutions of the system connecting two spatially homogeneous equilibrium solutions with wave speed greater than some critical number c∗. We also show the non-existence of such traveling waves with speed less than some critical number c∗0 , which is independent of the chemotaxis. Moreover, under suitable hypotheses on the coefficients of the reaction terms, we obtain explicit range for the chemotaxis sensitivity coefficients ensuring c∗ = c∗0 , which …

Infinite Peirce Distribution In The Algebra Of Compact Operators And Description Of Its Local Au-Tomorphisms, Farhodjon N. Arzikulov, Rejabboy Qo’Shaqov
Scientific Bulletin. Physical and Mathematical Research
In the present paper the infinite Peirce decomposition of the algebra 𝐾(𝐻) of com-pact operators on an infinite dimensional separable Gilbert space 𝐻 is constructed, using the norm of the algebra 𝐾(𝐻) and a maximal family of mutually or-thogonal minimal projections, i.e., self-adjoint,idempotent elements. The infinite Peirce decompo-sition on the norm of a 𝐶∗-algebra is also con-structed in 2012 by the first author. But, it turns, the condition, applied then, is not sufficient for the infi-nite Peirce decomposition on the norm constructed in 2012 to be an algebra. Therefore, in the present paper, the infinite Peirce decomposition on the norm …

An Analysis Of The Presence Of Dialogic Communication Features On Indiana Environmental Organizations' Websites, Jessica Moon
LSU Master's Theses
Dialogic communication is a two-way form of communication that allows entities such as organizations and their publics to share their viewpoints and contribute to decision-making processes openly and equally. The Five Dialogic Principles of Public Relations (ease of use of the interface, usefulness of information, conservation of visitors, generation of return visits, and dialogic loop) is a framework that has been used to examine this form of communication online. Research has shown that organizations’ websites have a generally low presence of features related to the Five Dialogic Principles. The goal of the present study was to determine the …

Electrochemical Reduction Of Hexavalent Chromium In Acetonitrile Using Glassy Carbon Electrodes, Temitope Jegede
LSU Master's Theses
Hexavalent chromium Cr(VI), a form of chromium mainly generated through industrial processes, has attracted great research interests due to its severe toxicity to biological systems. A common way to remove hexavalent chromium from industrial wastes is through reduction to the non-toxic trivalent state. To this end, methods such as chemical reduction, chemical precipitation and coagulation have been used. However, these methods are limited by poor removal efficiency, formation of secondary pollutants (sludge), and are mostly applicable to aqueous solutions. Recently, electrochemical methods have been investigated for reducing hexavalent chromium, but there is a lack of data on the reduction of …

Application Of Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry To Monitor Surface Deformations Of The Trans-European Transport Network (Ten-T) – A Case Study Of The Motorways Crossing Areas Of Mining Operations In The Upper Silesian Coal Basin, Poland, Adam Smoliński, Mariusz Stawinoga, Tomasz Pindel
Journal of Sustainable Mining
Underground hard coal mining causes surface deformations. When the mining operations are conducted beneath linear objects, such as motorways, there is a risk of deformations of the axis of the road and its horizontal and vertical alignment (additional bends and vertical curvatures, longitudinal inclinations, deformations of crosssections). In the areas subjected to mining operations, mining plants conduct geodetic monitoring. Due to their labour intensity and costs, geodetic measurements are usually made only a few times a year. The article discusses the possibility of applying Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) to monitor the subsidence of the vertical alignment of motorways caused …

Exact Christoffel-Darboux Expansions: A New, Multidimensional, Algebraic, Eigenenergy Bounding Method, Carlos Handy
Faculty Publications
Although the Christoffel-Darboux representation (CDR) plays an important role within the theory of orthogonal polynomials, and many important bosonic and fermionic, multidimensional, Hermitian and Non-Hermitian, systems can be transformed into a moment equation representation (MER), the union of the two into an effective, algebraic, eigenenergy bounding method has been overlooked. This particular fusion of the two representations (CDR and MER), defines the Orthonormal Polynomial Projection Quantization-Bounding Method (OPPQ-BM), as developed here. We use it to analyze several one dimensional and two dimensional systems, including the quadratic Zeeman effect for strong-superstrong magnetic fields. For this problem, we match or surpass the …

In this review, we delve into the topic of the pulmonary surfactant (PS) system, which is present in the respiratory system. The total composition of the PS has been presented and explored, from the types of cells involved in its synthesis and secretion, down to the specific building blocks used, such as the various lipid and protein components. The lipid and protein composition varies across species and between individuals, but ultimately produces a PS monolayer with the same role. As such, the composition has been investigated for the ways in which it imposes function and confers peculiar biophysical characteristics to …

Soil Morphology And Carbon Stocks Of Deflation Basin Wetlands In Eastern Nebraska, Usa, Aubrey Grace Kemper
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Wetlands contribute important ecosystem services such as water filtration and storage, wildlife habitat, and carbon sequestration. The objective of this study is to compare the soil morphology and the carbon and nitrogen stocks between the upland, basin edge, and basin floor in playa wetlands of eastern Nebraska. This work was conducted in three deflation basin wetlands in the Todd Valley, a loess-mantled, former course of the Platte River, in eastern Nebraska. Soil morphological descriptions were evaluated to two meters’ depth using cores collected along three transects from the upland to the basin floor in three basins, carbon and nitrogen stocks …

Dynamic Parameter Estimation From Partial Observations Of The Lorenz System, Eunice Ng
Theses and Dissertations
Recent numerical work of Carlson-Hudson-Larios leverages a nudging-based algorithm for data assimilation to asymptotically recover viscosity in the 2D Navier-Stokes equations as partial observations on the velocity are received continuously-in-time. This "on-the-fly" algorithm is studied both analytically and numerically for the Lorenz equations in this thesis.

The Exact Factorization Equations For One- And Two-Level Systems, Bart Rosenzweig
Theses and Dissertations
Exact Factorization is a framework for studying quantum many-body problems. This decomposes the wavefunctions of such systems into conditional and marginal components. We derive corresponding evolution equations for molecular systems whose conditional electronic subsystems are described by one or two Born-Oppenheimer levels and develop a program for their mathematical study.

In Pursuit Of Comparability: Evaluating Influence And Interaction Among Components Of The Home Range Estimation Process In Chimpanzee Datasets, Jillian J. Rutherford
Geography ETDs
The home range (HR) is a fundamental manifestation of an animal’s spatial behavior, but its study has been limited by unclear, unreliable, and unstandardized methodological approaches for measurement. The lack of a comprehensive evaluation of the influence of components of the HR estimation process has hampered consensus over best practices for collecting and analysing movement data. This leads to wide variation in practice, thwarting direct comparability between HR estimates and curtailing the cohesive power of cross-study findings necessary for testing hypotheses and developing appropriate conservation and management strategies. In this thesis I explore the influence of and interaction between common …
