Improving The Security And Performance Of Web Applications Running On The Distributed Ipfs, Vu Le
Master's Projects
While cloud computing is gaining widespread adoption these days, some challenges are emerging around security, performance, and reliability of centralized cloud resources. Decentralized services are introduced as an effective way to overcome the limitations of cloud services. Blockchain technology with its associated decentralization is used to develop decentralized application platforms. The interplanetary file system (IPFS) is built on top of a distributed system consisting of a group of nodes that shares the data and also takes advantage of blockchain to permanently store the data. The IPFS is very useful in transferring data between people. This project focuses on blockchain technology, …

Analyzing Public Sentiment On Covid-19 Pandemic, Pradeepika Gedupudi
Master's Projects
Sentiment analysis is a method of understanding the user sentiment expressed in the form of text. Social media is the best place to capture the public's opinion regarding how they feel about current events. The Corona Virus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) is one of the worst pandemics we have experienced so far. An important observation is that this pandemic has not only affected the public's physical health but also took a toll on their mental health. Reddit is a social news discussion site where people discuss topics around current affairs in smaller groups called subreddits. The project's primary focus is to build …

Bacteria that colonize animals must overcome, or coexist, with the reactive oxygen species products of inflammation, a front-line defense of innate immunity. Among these is the neutrophilic oxidant bleach, hypochlorous acid (HOCl), a potent antimicrobial that plays a primary role in killing bacteria through nonspecific oxidation of proteins, lipids, and DNA. Here, we report that in response to increasing HOCl levels, Escherichia coli regulates biofilm production via activation of the diguanylate cyclase DgcZ. We identify the mechanism of DgcZ sensing of HOCl to be direct oxidation of its regulatory chemoreceptor zinc-binding (CZB) domain. Dissection of CZB signal transduction reveals that …

Rattle Detection – An Automotive Case Study, Orla Hartley
International Conference on Lean Six Sigma
This case study showcases the use of statistical tools to develop an objective Squeak and Rattle (S&R) measurement and detection test for End Of Line (EOL) sign off in an automotive manufacturing environment. Audio Induced S&R is an unwanted vibration within the vehicle caused by the sound system, impacting on customer perception of vehicle quality. Testing for S&R in an automotive environment has a key challenge; how to robustly detect a rattle at the EOL and thus prevent plant escapes to the customer. The objective test developed used microphones and analysers in order to replace an e subjective listening test. …

Analysis And Differentiation Of Uniform And Localized Corrosion Of Cu, Roshan J. Daljeet
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The current plan for disposal of used nuclear fuel in Canada involves sealing the waste in steel containers coated with 3 mm of copper and burying them in a deep geologic repository (DGR). The purpose of the copper coating is to provide corrosion resistance. To achieve long term containment, it is necessary that the copper layer corrodes slowly and predictably via active dissolution rather than passivating due to film formation. Film formation could allow pitting corrosion to occur in early phase repository conditions when groundwater ions such as Cl– , SO4 2– and HCO3 – play a dominant role in …

Air temperar (T) plays a fundamental role in many aspects of the flux exchanges between the atmosphere and ecosystems. Additionally, it is critical to know where (in relation to other essential measurements) and at what frequency T must be measured to accurately describe such exchanges. In closed-path eddy-covariance (CPEC) flux systems, T can be computed from the sonic temperature (Ts) and water vapor mixing ratio that are measured by the fast-response senosrs of three-dimensional sonic anemometer and infrared gas analyzer, respectively. T then is computed by use of either T = Ts( 1+0.51 q …
Bottom-Up Fabrication And Characterization Of Dna Origami-Templated Electronic Nanomaterials, Basu Ram Aryal
Bottom-Up Fabrication And Characterization Of Dna Origami-Templated Electronic Nanomaterials, Basu Ram Aryal
Theses and Dissertations
This work presents the bottom-up fabrication of DNA origami-assembled metal nanowires and metal-semiconductor junctions, and their electrical characterization. Integration of metal and semiconductor nanomaterials into prescribed sites on self-assembled DNA origami has facilitated the fabrication of electronic nanomaterials, whereas use of conventional tools in their characterization combines bottom-up and top-down technologies. To expand the contemporary DNA-based nanofabrication into nanoelectronics, I performed site-specific metallization of DNA origami to create arbitrarily arranged gold nanostructures. I reported improved yields and conductivity measurements for Au nanowires created on DNA origami tile substrates. I measured the conductivity of C-shaped Au nanowires created on DNA tiles …

Dpp: Deep Predictor For Price Movement From Candlestick Charts, Chih-Chieh Hung, Ying-Ju (Tessa) Chen
Mathematics Faculty Publications
Forecasting the stock market prices is complicated and challenging since the price movement is affected by many factors such as releasing market news about earnings and profits, international and domestic economic situation, political events, monetary policy, major abrupt affairs, etc. In this work, a novel framework: deep predictor for price movement (DPP) using candlestick charts in the stock historical data is proposed. This framework comprises three steps: 1. decomposing a given candlestick chart into sub-charts; 2. using CNN-autoencoder to acquire the best representation of sub-charts; 3. applying RNN to predict the price movements from a collection of sub-chart representations. An …

Improving Facial Emotion Recognition With Image Processing And Deep Learning, Ksheeraj Sai Vepuri
Master's Projects
Humans often use facial expressions along with words in order to communicate effectively. There has been extensive study of how we can classify facial emotion with computer vision methodologies. These have had varying levels of success given challenges and the limitations of databases, such as static data or facial capture in non-real environments. Given this, we believe that new preprocessing techniques are required to improve the accuracy of facial detection models. In this paper, we propose a new yet simple method for facial expression recognition that enhances accuracy. We conducted our experiments on the FER-2013 dataset that contains static facial …

Task Classification During Visual Search With Deep Learning Neural Networks And Machine Learning Methods, Siddartha Thentu
Master's Projects
Studies have shown the possibility to classify user tasks from eye-movement data. We present a new way to determine the optimal model for different visual attention tasks using data that includes two types of visual search tasks, a visual exploration task, a blank screen task, and a task where a user needs to fixate at the center of any scene. We used deep learning and SVM models on RGB images generated from fixation scan paths from these tasks. We also used AdaBoost on filtered eye movement data as a baseline. Our study shows that deep learning gives the best accuracy …

On A Polyanalytic Approach To Noncommutative De Branges–Rovnyak Spaces And Schur Analysis, Daniel Alpay, Fabrizio Colombo, Kamal Diki, Irene Sabadini
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
In this paper we begin the study of Schur analysis and of de Branges–Rovnyak spaces in the framework of Fueter hyperholomorphic functions. The difference with other approaches is that we consider the class of functions spanned by Appell-like polynomials. This approach is very efficient from various points of view, for example in operator theory, and allows us to make connections with the recently developed theory of slice polyanalytic functions. We tackle a number of problems: we describe a Hardy space, Schur multipliers and related results. We also discuss Blaschke functions, Herglotz multipliers and their associated kernels and Hilbert spaces. Finally, …

Localized Anthropogenic And Geogenic Groundwater Contamination In The Structurally Complex Carbonate-Hosted East Tintic Mining District, Eureka, Ut, Usa, Cameron Patrick Cordner
Theses and Dissertations
Legacy mining areas throughout the world contain widespread contaminated surface and groundwater from both anthropogenic and geogenic sources. Abandoned mine waste can contribute harmful solutes to groundwater and surface water, as metals mobilize through oxidation of sulfide minerals. Geogenic contaminant sources, such as geothermal water and mineralization, may also contribute to groundwater pollution in mining areas. To investigate the relationship between various groundwater contamination sources in legacy mining areas we sampled ~30 cold springs in the East Tintic Mountains of Utah and 8 regional hot springs as a proxy for geothermal water during fall 2019 and spring/summer 2020. Water chemistry …

3CLpro is essential for SARS-CoV-2 replication and infection; its inhibition using small molecules is a potential therapeutic strategy. In this study, a comprehensive crystallography-guided fragment-based drug discovery approach was employed to design new inhibitors for SARS-CoV-2 3CLpro. All small molecules co-crystallized with SARS-CoV-2 3CLpro with structures deposited in the Protein Data Bank were used as inputs. Fragments sitting in the binding pocket (87) were grouped into eight geographical types. They were interactively coupled using various synthetically reasonable linkers to generate larger molecules with divalent binding modes taking advantage of two different fragments' interactions. In total, 1,251 compounds were proposed, and …
