Pharyngeal Constriction As A Cause For Late Acquisition And Speech Sound Disorders Of Rhotic Sounds In English, Spanish, And French, Connor Mahon May 2021

Pharyngeal Constriction As A Cause For Late Acquisition And Speech Sound Disorders Of Rhotic Sounds In English, Spanish, And French, Connor Mahon

The Downtown Review

This paper attempts to explain why rhotic sounds are cross-linguistically late developing among the sound inventory of children. Included is a summary of the current literature regarding classification of rhotic sounds, an examination of the articulatory movement of the tongue root, and an overview of the clinical implications on the field of speech-language pathology. The evidence presented supports the hypothesis that pharyngeal constriction is characteristic of rhotic sounds in many languages, and that it is related to the relative late acquisition and higher rate of speech sound disorders, as seen in English, Spanish, and French.

Estimation Of The Planetary Boundary Layer Height: Part 1: Global Radar Wind Profiler Network Data; Part 2: A Comparison To Ceilometer Data, Holly Josephs May 2021

Estimation Of The Planetary Boundary Layer Height: Part 1: Global Radar Wind Profiler Network Data; Part 2: A Comparison To Ceilometer Data, Holly Josephs

Theses and Dissertations

Two methods for estimating the planetary boundary layer, an algorithm to identify a maximum in the backscatter and a covariance wavelet transform method, are explored and applied to global radar wind profiler network data and ceilometer data respectively. The objective of the study is to establish that the data sources and algorithms can be used to estimate planetary boundary layer heights so that global studies can make use of these estimates. Data from the global network of wind profilers required significant restructuring and quality control in order to be used for the present study. The maximum backscatter identification algorithm was …

Markov Model Composition Of Balinese Reyong Norot Improvisations, Taylor Flanagan, Robert Rovetti May 2021

Markov Model Composition Of Balinese Reyong Norot Improvisations, Taylor Flanagan, Robert Rovetti

Honors Thesis

Markov models are mathematical structures that model the transition between possible states based on the probability of moving from one state to any other. Thus, given a distribution of starting points, the model produces a chain of states that are visited in sequence. Such models have been used extensively to generate music based on probabilities, as sequences of states can represent sequences of notes and rhythms. While music generation is a common application of Markov models, most existing work attempts to reconstruct the musical style of classical Western composers. In this thesis, we produce a series of Markov chains that …

Soil organic nitrogen (N) is a critical resource for plants and microbes, but the processes that govern its cycle are not well-described. To promote a holistic understanding of soil N dynamics, we need an integrated model that links soil organic matter (SOM) cycling to bioavailable N in both unmanaged and managed landscapes, including agroecosystems. We present a framework that unifies recent conceptual advances in our understanding of three critical steps in bioavailable N cycling: organic N (ON) depolymerization and solubilization; bioavailable N sorption and desorption on mineral surfaces; and microbial ON turnover including assimilation, mineralization, and the recycling of microbial …

The Effects Of Individual Differences, Non‐Stationarity, And The Importance Of Data Partitioning Decisions For Training And Testing Of Eeg Cross‐Participant Models, Alexander J. Kamrud [*], Brett J. Borghetti, Christine M. Schubert Kabban

Faculty Publications

EEG-based deep learning models have trended toward models that are designed to perform classification on any individual (cross-participant models). However, because EEG varies across participants due to non-stationarity and individual differences, certain guidelines must be followed for partitioning data into training, validation, and testing sets, in order for cross-participant models to avoid overestimation of model accuracy. Despite this necessity, the majority of EEG-based cross-participant models have not adopted such guidelines. Furthermore, some data repositories may unwittingly contribute to the problem by providing partitioned test and non-test datasets for reasons such as competition support. In this study, we demonstrate how improper …

Second-Order Semi-Discretized Schemes For Solving Stochastic Quenching Models On Arbitrary Spatial Grids, Nina Garcia-Montoya, Julienne Kabre, Jorge E. Macías-Díaz, Qin Sheng

Mathematics Faculty Articles

Reaction-diffusion-advection equations provide precise interpretations for many important phenomena in complex interactions between natural and artificial systems. This paper studies second-order semi-discretizations for the numerical solution of reaction-diffusion-advection equations modeling quenching types of singularities occurring in numerous applications. Our investigations particularly focus at cases where nonuniform spatial grids are utilized. Detailed derivations and analysis are accomplished. Easy-to-use and highly effective second-order schemes are acquired. Computational experiments are presented to illustrate our results as well as to demonstrate the viability and capability of the new methods for solving singular quenching problems on arbitrary grid platforms.

Understanding the impact of tree structure on snow depth and extent is important in order to make predictions of snow amounts and how changes in forest cover may affect future water resources. In this work, we investigate snow depth under tree canopies and in open areas to quantify the role of tree structure in controlling snow depth, as well as the controls from wind and topography. We use fine-scale terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) data collected across Grand Mesa, Colorado, USA (winter 2016–2017), to measure the snow depth and extract horizontal and vertical tree descriptors (metrics) at six sites. We utilize …

Angular Momentum Coherences In Molecular Dynamics, Margaret Gregory May 2021

Angular Momentum Coherences In Molecular Dynamics, Margaret Gregory

Student Research Submissions

The recent development of attosecond laser pulses provides a direct path to observing the electronic dynamics of excited molecules. Recently proposed experimental methods re- quire that the measurements be made in the molecular frame, that is, that the molecule is in a fixed orientation. However, quantum mechanics does not allow this. Here we examine instead the full dimensional, laboratory frame, time evolving probability distribution gen- erated by resonant excitation of a molecular sample. Quantum dynamics are driven by both the populations of quantum states and the coherences between them. Since the total angular momentum of an isolated system is conserved, …

Phase-Space Dynamics Of Runaway Electrons In Tokamaks, Gavin Held May 2021

Phase-Space Dynamics Of Runaway Electrons In Tokamaks, Gavin Held

Physics Capstone Projects

Nuclear fusion converts the rest mass energy of ions like the deuteron and triton into kinetic energy. In theory, this energy can be harvested from a thermonuclear reactor to provide power outputs on the scale of 500 MW. High temperatures are needed for significant fusion to occur, hence the tokamak (a modern fusion confinement device) employs strong magnetic fields to keep the ionized gas (plasma) away from the tokamak wall. However, a problem that occasionally arises in a tokamak is that during a disruption an inductive electric field is created which can accelerate electrons to relativistic speeds (these electrons are …

Climatic And Topographic Control Of The Stable Isotope Values Of Rivers On The South Island Of New Zealand, Matthew S. Lachniet, Christopher M. Moy, Christina Riesselman, Haroon Stephen, Andrew M. Lorrey

Geoscience Faculty Research

We show that climate and topography control the spatial distribution of stable isotope values on the South Island of New Zealand, based on a spatially dense (n = 193) river isotopic survey. Our data show a δ O minimum in isotope values east of the Southern Alps that demonstrates topographically driven continentality associated with the Southern Alps, which intersect the prevailing, moisture-laden westerlies. Our data define a South Island surface water line of δ H = 8.17 (±0.26) × δ O + 10.57 (±2.04), which is identical within 95% confidence intervals to the global and New Zealand meteoric water lines …

Sampling Compactness Scores To Detect Gerrymandering In Squaretopia, Joshua Mariz May 2021

Sampling Compactness Scores To Detect Gerrymandering In Squaretopia, Joshua Mariz

Honors Thesis

In electoral politics, gerrymandering is the phenomenon of creating electoral district partitionings that are often not geographically compact for the unfair benefit of one political party over another. Researchers have proposed several methods to quantify compactness, but identifying gerrymandering using these measures is an open problem. We analyze the possible distributions of compactness scores by exploring “Squaretopia,” a square n x n grid that we must partition into n equally-sized contiguous districts that each contain n cells. However, even in this simplified model, the number of possible partitions of a Squaretopia of size n = 9 exceeds 700 trillion, rendering …

Time Series Forecasting Of Covid-19 Deaths In Massachusetts, Andrew Disher

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The aim of this study was to use data provided by the Department of Public Health in the state of Massachusetts on its online dashboard to produce a time series model to accurately forecast the number of new confirmed deaths that have resulted from the spread of CoViD-19. Multiple different time series models were created, which can be classified as either an Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model or a Regression Model with ARIMA Errors. Two ARIMA models were created to provide a baseline forecasting performance for comparison with the Regression Model with ARIMA Errors, which used the number of …

Heuristically Secure Threshold Lattice-Based Cryptography Schemes, James D. Dalton May 2021

Heuristically Secure Threshold Lattice-Based Cryptography Schemes, James D. Dalton

Masters Theses, 2020-current

In public-key encryption, a long-term private key can be an easy target for hacking and deserves extra protection. One way to enhance its security is to share the long-term private key among multiple (say n) distributed servers; any threshold number (t, t ≤ n) of these servers are needed to collectively use the shared private key without reconstructing it. As a result, an attacker who has compromised less than t servers will still not be able to reconstruct the shared private key.

In this thesis, we studied threshold decryption schemes for lattice-based public-key en- cryption, which is one of the …

Terrestrial Soldier Crab (Coenobita Clypeatus, Fabricius 1787) And Cerion Spp. (Röding 1798) Shell Relationship On San Salvador Island, Bahamas, Harley Hunt

Biology Theses

The Caribbean terrestrial soldier crab, Coenobita clypeatus(Fabricius 1787), coexist and utilize the shells of numerous species of land and marine gastropods. Soldier crabs rely on gastropod shells for protection as the crabs have a soft abdomen, leaving them vulnerable for predation and desiccation, threatening their survival. This creates a strong pressure to obtain well-fitting shells that provide adequate protection against water loss. Cerion of Röding (1798) shells are one of the most commonly used shells among living colonies of C. clypeatuson San Salvador Island. This study is interested in the frequency of shell use by C. clypeatus crabs …

Study Of Efficient Methods Of Detection And Reconstruction Of Gravitational Waves From Nonrotating 3d General Relativistic Core Collapse Supernovae Explosion Using Multilayer Signal Estimation Method, Soma Mukherjee, Gaukhar Nurbek, Oscar Valdez

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the post-detection era of gravitational wave (GW) astronomy, core collapse supernovae (CCSN) are one of the most interesting potential sources of signals arriving at the Advanced LIGO detectors. Mukherjee et al. have developed and implemented a new method to search for GW signals from the CCSN search based on a multistage, high accuracy spectral estimation to effectively achieve higher detection signal to noise ratio (SNR). The study has been further enhanced by incorporation of a convolutional neural network (CNN) to significantly reduce false alarm rates (FAR). The combined pipeline is termed multilayer signal estimation (MuLaSE) that works in an …

Modeling Hydraulic Fracturing Initiation And Propagation In Porous Rock Formationsl, Chang Huang May 2021

Modeling Hydraulic Fracturing Initiation And Propagation In Porous Rock Formationsl, Chang Huang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Hydraulic fracturing has long been introduced to the oil and gas industry since the early nineteenth century for both reservoir characterization and reservoir stimulation. Despite the progress made in the last two decades, many challenges still have not been tackled regarding not only the propagation problem but also the initiation problem due to its complexity. The dissertation is divided into two stages, i.e., before and after fracture initiation. The first stage of the research aimed at improving the accuracy in solving the poro-mechanical response of wellbore during fluid injection before a tensile fracture occurs, which is crucial to determine the …

Fixed Pattern Noise Non-Uniformity Correction through K-Means Clustering

Fixed pattern noise removal from imagery by software correction is a practical approach compared to a physical hardware correction because it allows for correction post-capture of the imagery. Fixed pattern noise presents a unique challenge for de-noising techniques as the noise does not present itself where large number statistics are effective. Traditional noise removal techniques such as blurring or despeckling produce poor correction results because of a lack of noise identification. Other correction methods developed for fixed pattern noise can often present another problem of misidentification of noise. This problem can result …

Meta-Analysis Reveals Different Competition Effects On Tree Growth Resistance And Resilience To Drought, Daniele Castagneri, Giorgio Vacchiano, Andrew Hacket-Pain, R. Justin Derose, Tamir Klein, Alessandra Bottero

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Drought will increasingly threaten forest ecosystems worldwide. Understanding how competition influences tree growth response to drought is essential for forest management aiming at climate change adaptation. However, published results from individual case studies are heterogeneous and sometimes contradictory. We reviewed 166 cases from the peer-reviewed literature to assess the influence of stand-level competition on tree growth response to drought. We monitored five indicators of tree growth response: mean sensitivity (inter-annual tree ring width variability); association between inter-annual growth variability and water availability; resistance; recovery; and resilience to drought. Vote counting did not indicate a consistent effect of competition on mean …
