Continuous American Sign Language Translation With English Speech Synthesis Using Encoder-Decoder Approach, Preetham Ganesh
Continuous American Sign Language Translation With English Speech Synthesis Using Encoder-Decoder Approach, Preetham Ganesh
Computer Science and Engineering Theses
Interaction between human beings brings about improvements in science and technology. However, the interaction is limited for people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, as they can only communicate with others who also know their sign language. With the help of recent technologies, such as Deep Learning, the gap can be bridged by converting Sentence-based Sign Language videos into English language speech. The methods discussed in this thesis are taking a step closer to solve that problem. There are four steps involved in converting ASL (American Sign Language) videos to English language speech. Step 1 is to recognize the phrases performed …
Image Analysis Of Charged Bimodal Colloidal Systems In Microgravity., Adam J. Cecil
Image Analysis Of Charged Bimodal Colloidal Systems In Microgravity., Adam J. Cecil
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Colloids are suspensions of two or more phases and have been topics of research for advanced, tunable materials for decades. Stabilization of colloids is typically attributed to thermodynamic mechanisms; however, recent studies have identified transport or entropic mechanisms that can potentially stabilize a thermodynamically unstable colloidal system. In this study, suspensions of silsesquioxane microparticles and zirconia nanoparticles were dispersed in a nitric acid solution and allowed to aggregate for 8-12 days in microgravity aboard the International Space Station. The suspensions were subsequently imaged periodically at 2.5x magnification. Due to the inadequacy of existing image analysis programs, the python package “Colloidspy” …
Presence Of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 In Urban Streams Receiving Sewer Overflow, Louisville, Kentucky, Usa., Cullen Hunter
Presence Of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 In Urban Streams Receiving Sewer Overflow, Louisville, Kentucky, Usa., Cullen Hunter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Pathogens may enter surface waters as they are shed in human feces and potentially delivered to surface waters via sewer overflows, particularly in the eastern United States. This study examined of the presence of fecal indicators in two forks of Beargrass Creek in Louisville, Kentucky. Surface water grab samples (N=30), sediment samples, water quality, and a paired wastewater surveillance study were analyzed. SARS-CoV-2 was detected in a single stream sample despite ubiquitous presence of the virus within the area in wastewater and consistent evidence of a human fecal indicator. These findings demonstrate the need for more green and gray infrastructure …
Estimating Cumulative Incidence Rate On Interval Censored Data In An Illness-Death Model., Chen Qian
Estimating Cumulative Incidence Rate On Interval Censored Data In An Illness-Death Model., Chen Qian
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Phase IV clinical trials are designed to monitor long-term side effects caused overtime by the medical treatment. For instance, in advanced primary cancer treatment, childhood cancer survivors are often at risk of developing undesired events, such as cardiotoxicity, during their adulthood. Such problems could be due to their cancer or the treatment they received for their cancer such as radiation or intensive chemotherapy. Cardiotoxicity can be diagnosed with electrophysiology with measurements of fraction shortening, afterload, etc. Often the primary focus of a study could be on estimating the cumulative incidence of a particular outcome of interest such as cardiotoxicity. However, …
Observational Studies In Group Testing And Potential Applications., Alexander Christopher Noll
Observational Studies In Group Testing And Potential Applications., Alexander Christopher Noll
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The use of group testing to identify individuals with targeted outcomes in a population can greatly improve the efficiency, speed, and cost effectiveness of testing a population for an outcome, or at least for identifying the prevalence of an outcome in a population. The implementation of causal inference techniques can provide the basis for an observational study that would allow an investigator to gather estimates for treatment effectiveness if group testing was conducted on the population in a certain way. This thesis examines a simulation of the above outlined principles in order to demonstrate a potential application for determining treatment …

Ga-Based Iii-V Semiconductor Photoanodes For Solar Fuels And Novel Techniques To Investigate Their Photocorrosion., Sahar Pishgar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Solar energy is one of the most abundant renewable energy sources. However, the diurnal variation of the sun as well as seasonal and weather effects, limits the widespread global implementation of solar energy. Thus, Cost-effective energy storage is critical to overcome the intermittent nature of solar energy available on the earth. Photoelectrolysis of water to oxygen and hydrogen fuel is a promising large-scale solution to store intermittent solar energy in a dense and portable form. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water-splitting, or artificial photosynthesis, research strives to develop a semiconductor photoelectrode with both high efficiency and long-term stability. Semiconductors of the III–V class …
On Elliptic Curves, Montana S. Miller
On Elliptic Curves, Montana S. Miller
MSU Graduate Theses
An elliptic curve over the rational numbers is given by the equation y2 = x3+Ax+B. In our thesis, we study elliptic curves. It is known that the set of rational points on the elliptic curve form a finitely generated abelian group induced by the secant-tangent addition law. We present an elementary proof of associativity using Maple. We also present a relatively concise proof of the Mordell-Weil Theorem.

Measuring The Night Sky Brightness Of Butler University, Austin Thomas Jacks
Measuring The Night Sky Brightness Of Butler University, Austin Thomas Jacks
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Light pollution has had a significant impact on ground-based telescope observations in recent years. As the night sky brightness continues to increase, astronomers are looking for new ways to combat this growing problem. According to the International Dark Sky Association (IDA), “An important part of solving the problem of light pollution is to have a thorough understanding of its magnitude, and a great way to do that is to measure the brightness of the night sky” [1]. The night sky brightness of surrounding Butler University is measured using the Holcomb Observatory 0.95-meter Cassegrain telescope. Different types of filters were used …

Home Sweet Home: A Statistical Analysis Of Home Court Advantage In Division I College Basketball, Lauren Isabel Turnbull
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Home court advantage is a term that has been used throughout the basketball world by everyone from broadcasters and TV analysts to athletes and coaches to fans. It is a reference to the perceived benefit that the home team receives by playing in their own arena or stadium. Much of the prior research on home court advantage has centered around the reasons that it exists and how it impacts the play on the court through box score statistics. Building on this previous research, this study performs a statistical analysis of men's college basketball to determine if home court advantage is …
Examining The Invasion Of A Bush Honeysuckle Using Climate Analysis, Andrew Palmer
Examining The Invasion Of A Bush Honeysuckle Using Climate Analysis, Andrew Palmer
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
Within the study of invasive plants, particular importance is placed on elucidating the mechanisms by which these plants proliferate and dominate within their introduced ranges. Several theories have been advanced to explain these invasions, each with different implications for the predicted range of invasive plants. Recent studies have provided support for the application of several invasion theories to Lonicera maackii, or what is more commonly referred to as bush honeysuckle. This species provides a unique opportunity to examine the efficacy of these theories in explaining the range expansion of invasive plants. L. maackii is endemic to eastern Asia, but …
Semi-Supervised Spatial-Temporal Feature Learning On Anomaly-Based Network Intrusion Detection, Huy Mai
Semi-Supervised Spatial-Temporal Feature Learning On Anomaly-Based Network Intrusion Detection, Huy Mai
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Due to a rapid increase in network traffic, it is growing more imperative to have systems that detect attacks that are both known and unknown to networks. Anomaly-based detection methods utilize deep learning techniques, including semi-supervised learning, in order to effectively detect these attacks. Semi-supervision is advantageous as it doesn't fully depend on the labelling of network traffic data points, which may be a daunting task especially considering the amount of traffic data collected. Even though deep learning models such as the convolutional neural network have been integrated into a number of proposed network intrusion detection systems in recent years, …
Improving Bayesian Graph Convolutional Networks Using Markov Chain Monte Carlo Graph Sampling, Aneesh Komanduri
Improving Bayesian Graph Convolutional Networks Using Markov Chain Monte Carlo Graph Sampling, Aneesh Komanduri
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
In the modern age of social media and networks, graph representations of real-world phenomena have become incredibly crucial. Often, we are interested in understanding how entities in a graph are interconnected. Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have proven to be a very useful tool in a variety of graph learning tasks including node classification, link prediction, and edge classification. However, in most of these tasks, the graph data we are working with may be noisy and may contain spurious edges. That is, there is a lot of uncertainty associated with the underlying graph structure. Recent approaches to modeling uncertainty have been …
From Multi-Prime To Subset Labelings Of Graphs, Bethel I. Mcgrew
From Multi-Prime To Subset Labelings Of Graphs, Bethel I. Mcgrew
Dissertations
A graph labeling is an assignment of labels (elements of some set) to the vertices or edges (or both) of a graph G. If only the vertices of G are labeled, then the resulting graph is a vertex-labeled graph. If only the edges are labeled, the resulting graph is an edge-labeled graph. The concept was first introduced in the 19th century when Arthur Cayley established Cayley’s Tree Formula, which proved that there are nn-2 distinct labeled trees of order n. Since then, it has grown into a popular research area.
In this study, we first review several types …
On The Hamiltonicity Of Subgroup Lattices, Nicholas Charles Fleece
On The Hamiltonicity Of Subgroup Lattices, Nicholas Charles Fleece
MSU Graduate Theses
In this paper we discuss the Hamiltonicity of the subgroup lattices of
different classes of groups. We provide sufficient conditions for the
Hamiltonicity of the subgroup lattices of cube-free abelian groups. We also
prove the non-Hamiltonicity of the subgroup lattices of dihedral and
dicyclic groups. We disprove a conjecture on non-abelian p-groups by
producing an infinite family of non-abelian p-groups with Hamiltonian
subgroup lattices. Finally, we provide a list of the Hamiltonicity of the
subgroup lattices of every finite group up to order 35 barring two groups.
Frobenius And Homological Dimensions Of Complexes, Taran Funk
Frobenius And Homological Dimensions Of Complexes, Taran Funk
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Much work has been done showing how one can use a commutative Noetherian local ring R of prime characteristic, viewed as algebra over itself via the Frobenius endomorphism, as a test for flatness or projectivity of a finitely generated module M over R. Work on this dates back to the famous results of Peskine and Szpiro and also that of Kunz. Here I discuss what work has been done to push this theory into modules which are not necessarily finitely generated, and display my work done to weaken the assumptions needed to obtain these results.

Sobolev Inequalities And Riemannian Manifolds, John Reever
Sobolev Inequalities And Riemannian Manifolds, John Reever
Honors Scholar Theses
Sobolev inequalities, named after Sergei Lvovich Sobolev, relate norms in Sobolev spaces and give insight to how Sobolev spaces are embedded within each other. This thesis begins with an overview of Lebesgue and Sobolev spaces, leading into an introduction to Sobolev inequalities. Soon thereafter, we consider the behavior of Sobolev inequalities on Riemannian manifolds. We discuss how Sobolev inequalities are used to construct isoperimetric inequalities and bound volume growth, and how Sobolev inequalities imply families of other Sobolev inequalities. We then delve into the usefulness of Sobolev inequalities in determining the geometry of a manifold, such as how they can …

Theses and Dissertations
CHAPTER 1: PART A: A UNIQUE APPROACH OF PREPARING 3,3-DISUBSTITUTED OXINDOLES FROM ACYCLIC TETRASUBSTITUTED ALDEHYDES: TOTAL SYNTHESIS OF (-)-COERULESCINE AND (-)-COIXSPIROLACTAM A(-)-Coerulescine and (-)-coixspirolactam A, two naturally occurring compounds characterized with an all-carbon quaternary center containing a spirooxindole, have been synthesized asymmetrically. The key feature of their total synthesis involves a novel rational construction of the chiral 3,3-disubstituted oxindole core from the acyclic chiral tetrasubstituted aldehyde. The later scaffold was prepared in high enantioselectivity (up to 86%) from the ethyl 3-hydroxy-2-(2-nitrophenyl)acrylate 1 by exploring both intermolecular and intramolecular Pd-mediated asymmetric allylic allylations (Pd-AAA). A through optimization of these approaches is …

Structure & Function Of Enzymes In Two Uncharacterized Gene Clusters From Pseudomonas Brassicacearum & Streptomyces Griseofuscus, Lamia Tabassum Badhon
Theses and Dissertations
Pyridoxal 5’-phosphate (PLP)-dependent enzymes harness this versatile cofactor to catalyze a variety of reactions including transamination, decarboxylation, racemization and various elemination/subsitution reactions. Several years ago, a new class of PLP-dependent enzymes was discovered that uses PLP and molecular oxygen to catalyze the 4-electron oxidation of L-arginine to 4-hydroxy-2-ketoarginine. Work with the prototypical enzyme of this class, MppP from Streptomyces wadayamensis (SwMppP), showed that the dioxygen consumed during the reaction is reduced to hydrogen peroxide, and that the hydroxyl group installed in the product derives from water. Thus, SwMppP is an L-arginine oxidase, and not an oxygenase. This was surprising given …
2-Adic Valuations Of Square Spiral Sequences, Minh Nguyen
2-Adic Valuations Of Square Spiral Sequences, Minh Nguyen
Honors Theses
The study of p-adic valuations is connected to the problem of factorization of integers, an essential question in number theory and computer science. Given a nonzero integer n and prime number p, the p-adic valuation of n, which is commonly denoted as νp(n), is the greatest non-negative integer ν such that p ν | n. In this paper, we analyze the properties of the 2-adic valuations of some integer sequences constructed from Ulam square spirals. Most sequences considered were diagonal sequences of the form 4n 2 + bn + c from the Ulam spiral with center value of 1. Other …

A Golden Age For Computing Frontiers, A Dark Age For Computing Education?, Christof Teuscher
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
There is no doubt that the body of knowledge spanned by the computing disciplines has gone through an unprecedented expansion, both in depth and breadth, over the last century. In this position paper, we argue that this expansion has led to a crisis in computing education: quite literally the vast majority of the topics of interest of this conference are not taught at the undergraduate level and most graduate courses will only scratch the surface of a few selected topics. But alas, industry is increasingly expecting students to be familiar with emerging topics, such as neuromorphic, probabilistic, and quantum computing, …
Gender Gap In Computer Science: An Invitational Rhetoric Study, Cindy Ramirez
Gender Gap In Computer Science: An Invitational Rhetoric Study, Cindy Ramirez
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
This project will address the gender gap in computer science through a discourse analysis of materials used to attract young girls to the field. Applying Invitational Rhetoric, Foss and Griffin’s feminist rhetorical theory, I will determine how rhetoric is being used to attract or possibly dissuade young females from entering computer science. Women have contributed to the field of computer science beginning in the 19th century even though computers were not yet invented. Considered the world’s first programmer, Ada Lovelace helped pioneer the first modern computer science concepts, and many of the same ideas we use today, like variables and …

In global health research, short-term, small-scale clinical trials with fixed, two-arm trial designs that generally do not allow for major changes throughout the trial are the most common study design. Building on the introductory paper of this Series, this paper discusses data-driven approaches to clinical trial research across several adaptive trial designs, as well as the master protocol framework that can help to harmonise clinical trial research efforts in global health research. We provide a general framework for more efficient trial research, and we discuss the importance of considering different study designs in the planning stage with statistical simulations. We …

Direct Drive Solar Panel Control Circuit, Marcorios Bekheit
Physics
A control circuit is built for insulated solar electric cookers (ISEC). Power delivery and temperature safety are the focus. Using a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm, Arduino Nano, voltage and current sensors, and a buck converter, the solar panel’s output power was maximized for a direct load heat resistor with 3.5Ω for a range of solar intensities. Using a resistance temperature detector, a temperature sensor is built for safety shutoff.
Simulation And Optimization Of Kinematics Measurements For The Moller Parity-Violating Electron-Electron Scattering Experiment, Lauren Carver
Simulation And Optimization Of Kinematics Measurements For The Moller Parity-Violating Electron-Electron Scattering Experiment, Lauren Carver
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This report describes the optimization of the sieve collimator that will be used for the MOLLER experiment at Jefferson Laboratory. The MOLLER experiment seeks to study the parity-violating asymmetry in electron-electron elastic scattering. For this project, Monte Carlo simulations were run using a GEANT4 simulation package, which includes the main geometry of the proposed experiment, and the essential physics reaction processes. A sieve collimator was added to the simulated geometry. This collimator has pin-hole openings to select scattered electrons at certain locations (radial and azimuthal positions) corresponding to specific scattering angles (theta, and phi). Analysis of the simulated data were …
Investigating Charge Transfer Complexes In Brown Carbon Aerosols, Brianna Peterson
Investigating Charge Transfer Complexes In Brown Carbon Aerosols, Brianna Peterson
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Aerosols are suspensions of particles in the air, commonly seen as dust or fog in the atmosphere. Brown carbon is a particular classification of carbonaceous atmospheric aerosol that increases in absorption from the visible to ultraviolet region, making it important for radiative forcing models. Elucidating the structures of brown carbon chromophores has been difficult as brown carbon is a broad category and the chromophore type can change depending on emission source, temperature, humidity, and season. Twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) molecules have been identified as potential brown carbon chromophores. TICT molecules are those that allow charge transfer to occur between …

A Survey Of Methods To Determine Quantum Symmetry Of Graphs, Samantha Phillips
Undergraduate Honors Theses
We introduce the theory of quantum symmetry of a graph by starting with quantum permutation groups and classical automorphism groups. We study graphs with and without quantum symmetry to provide a comprehensive view of current techniques used to determine whether a graph has quantum symmetry. Methods provided include specific tools to show commutativity of generators of algebras of quantum automorphism groups of distance-transitive graphs; a theorem that describes why nontrivial, disjoint automorphisms in the automorphism group implies quantum symmetry; and a planar algebra approach to studying symmetry.

Styrene can be produced directly from benzene and ethylene through an atom economical oxidative hydroarylation process. In this process, an electrophilic homogeneous transition metal catalyst activates the C-H bond in benzene. I propose to explore this reaction in two fronts: 1) the synthesis of electron-poor trans-spanning bidentate pyridine ligands and 2) the computational study of pyridine-functionalized bidentate diimines. The trans-spanning ligand will utilize either a Ru(II) or Co(III) metallohinge with cis-coordinated 2-ethynylpyridine ligands. The complex [(p-cym)Ru(PMe3)(C2-2-py)2] (1) where (p-cym = para-cymene and C2-2-py = 2-ethynylpyridine) can be prepared from (p-cym)Ru(PMe3)(Cl)2 and HC2-2-py in the presence of lithium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide (LiHMDS). Complex …
