In this lesson, students examine all of the action plans they have created in the previous seven modules. They will analyze the goals and locations of those plans and look for common themes. Students will agree upon a new idea for an action plan that synthesizes the work they have already done, and reflects the scientific concepts they have learned over the course. As a class, you will create a new action plan that can realistically be implemented.

In this lesson, students will consider the benefits and trade-offs of their action plans over an extended period of time. Students will consider and discuss a quote attributed to the Great Law of the Iroquois and predict and complete a timeline of the benefits and tradeoffs of their action plan for ecological communities (human and non-human) seven “generations” into the future. This lesson allows you and your students to consider the future impact of their action plans, and allows your students to consider making any modifications to their action plans.

This lesson is designed to elicit student preconceptions about biodiversity and introduce the concept of biodiversity through discussions, reading, and comparing photographs. The first activity students come up with a definition for biodiversity. Then they will evaluate the biodiversity at three different locations along a transect. For the last activity in this lesson, students will read a narrative that explains the science of biodiversity, and clarifies terms and concepts used in the first part of this lesson.
