The Effect Of Urbanization On Water Quality, Mary Hays Scott, Paul Caspar, Danielle Clarke-Bradley
Spring Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
The past several decades have seen the proliferation of urban areas around the world (Uitto, 1999). Land-cover change, correlated with different forms of land use, is documented to have significant impact on earth's hydrologic systems (Aichele, 2005). Significant studies point to urbanization as being a key source of pollutants in earth's watersheds and natural hydrologic landscapes(Li et al. 2016; Aichele 2005). This study aims to measure the effect of urbanization on the water quality of Gross Creek. Concentrations of E.coli, phosphorus, nitrogen, and suspended sediments were measured from four sampling sites along Gross Creek in Farmville, Virginia. This process was …
A Non-Destructive Analytical Technique Used For Analyzing A Variety Of Glassware Samples In Hopes To Determine Their Elemental Composition Based Off Their Qualitative And Quantitative Data Results., Angela Scarpa
Spring Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
In this study, XRF analysis was used to examine and identify specific glassware samples, exported from remote locations, in hopes to determine any correlation between the glass samples being tested. During experimentation, there were 41 glass samples and 3 glass standards that were examined and quantitatively analyzed to determine the elemental compositions of all samples. To ensure optimal sensitivity of these different materials, four methods were utilized to confirm accurate data is collected and to improve all quantitative data results. These four methods contain distinct experimental factors and were purposely selected due to their specific current, voltage, filter, time, and …

Load System Modeling Of Ultra-Supercritical Coal-Fired Power Unit Based On Improved Particle Swarm Optimization, Yuzhen Sun, Yiwei Tang, Li Shuai
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Aiming at the difficulties in modeling due to variables coupling of ultra-supercritical coal-fired power unit and defects in basic particle swarm optimization, an improved particle swarm optimization algorithm for modeling of load system is proposed. The algorithm introduces the idea of adaptive, Cauchy mutation and gradient guidance crossover, which improves the problems of particle swarm optimization algorithm being prone to premature convergence and has the poor local searching ability. By collecting the actual operation data of the power plant, using the adaptive Cauchy mutation and gradient guidance cross particle swarm optimization (GMGPSO) algorithm, the model established and validated …

Preparation Of Perylene Bisimide Acceptors With Ethylcarboxyl And Pyrenylcyclohexyl Imide Groups, Michael Cashen Stark
Honors Theses
Multiple attempts were made to deprotect TBDMS-protected (tert-butyldimethylsilyl protected) serinol and swallowtailed PBI (Compound 2), synthesized by past researcher Tarrah Frederick, to generate Compound 1. The theoretical Compound 1 product is intended for use in molecular rectification of electricity because the perylene core acts as a good acceptor with high electron affinity, and it does not require an electron donor group. Many rectification molecules are amphiphilic Donor-σ-Acceptor compounds, which allow for electron transfer through localized molecular orbitals when placed between electrodes (Langmuir-Blodgett Method). However, PBIs can transfer electrons from one electrode, through the LUMO of perylene, and to the other …

We report measurements of the branching fractions of singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays Λc+→pη and Λc+→pπ0 using the full Belle data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 980.6 fb-1. The data were collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- asymmetric energy collider. A clear Λc+ signal is seen in the invariant mass distribution of pη. The fitted number of signal events of the Λc+→pη process is 7734±263; from this, we measure the ratio of branching fractions B(Λc+→pη)/B(Λc+→pK-π+)=[2.258±0.077(stat)±0.122(syst)]×10-2, from which we infer the branching fraction B(Λc+→pη)=[1.42±0.05(stat)±0.11(syst)]×10-3. In addition, no significant signal for Λc+→pπ0 is found, so an upper limit on …

In recent years, people have paid more and more attention to traditional manufacturing’s environmental impact, especially in terms of energy consumption and related emissions of carbon dioxide. Except for adopting new equipment, production scheduling could play an important role in reducing the total energy consumption of a manufacturing plant. Machine tools waste a considerable amount of energy because of their underutilization. Consequently, energy saving can be achieved by switching machines to standby or off when they lay idle for a comparatively long period. Herein, we first introduce the objectives of minimizing non-processing energy consumption, total weighted tardiness and earliness, and …
