Lie Groups And Euler-Bernoulli Beam Equation, Medeu Amangeldi Mar 2021

Lie Groups And Euler-Bernoulli Beam Equation, Medeu Amangeldi

Theses and Dissertations

Lie groups approach in differential equations was a breakthrough subject in the late nineteenth century. Sophus Lie, a Norwegian mathematician, introduced the systematic approach to study the solutions of differential equations. The main goal of this thesis is to study, using Lie's approach, the Euler-Bernoulli beam equation subject to swelling force, the fourth-order nonlinear differential equation used to describe the beam deflection under the swelling force. In particular, we will classify the symmetry groups of this equation, obtain several reductions, and demonstrate both analytical and numerical solutions.

Probing The Ground State Magnetism In Materials With Competing Magnetic Interactions, Richa Pokharel Madhogaria

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Materials with competing magnetic interactions provide a unique combination of intriguing physics originating from structural, magnetic, and electronic degrees of freedom, along with their technological applications. The complex oxides and helimagnets also share an interesting physics involving competitive interactions and understanding the behavior of one helps us to yield an insight into the other system. A rigorous understanding about the competing interactions in strongly correlated magnetic systems provide an opportunity to explore the related effects like spin frustration, glassiness, metamagnetism, which play an essential role in manipulating their magnetic properties and functionality. In this dissertation, we combine dc magnetization [M(H,T)], …

Wireless Sensor Network-Based Monitoring Of Bridge Pile Foundations For Detecting Scouring Depth, Han-Tang Huang, H. Ping Tserng, Ruei-Yu Hou, Mirosław Skibniewski

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

Climate change brings about unprecedented increases in the occurrence of storms and flooding. In response to increased risk of bridge pier scouring, there is a need for increased safety monitoring of bridges. This paper presents a wireless sensor network (WSN) - based solution developed to measure micro-vibrations of a bridge pier. Test measurement values are converted with the use of the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) method to obtain natural frequencies. Scouring depth of the pier is estimated with the use of a Finite Element Method model. WSN is used to collect the signal and to test data transmission stability in …

A New Fuzzy Dea Model For Solving The Mcdm Problems In Supplier Selection, Chi-Mao Tsai, Hsuan-Shih Lee, Guo-Ya Gan

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

Supplier selection is a crucial task in supply chain management, and good supply chain management is essential to a company's ability to develop sustainably and gain the trust and satisfaction of its customers. In modern supply chain management, supplier selection often takes the form of a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem. Thus, to solve this problem, this study formulated a novel fuzzy MCDM model, which is based on the fuzzy data envelopment analysis model. This novel approach can transform the linguistic variables of assessment criteria into well-founded quantitative data for calculation. Moreover, our approach can effectively discriminate between decision-making units (both …

A Deep Topical N-Gram Model And Topic Discovery On Covid-19 News And Research Manuscripts, Yuan Du

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Topic modeling with the latent semantic analysis (LSA), the latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) and the biterm topic model (BTM) has been successfully implemented and used in many areas, including movie reviews, recommender systems, and text summarization, etc. However, these models may become computationally intensive if tested on a humongous corpus. Considering the wide acceptance of machine learning based on deep neural networks, this research proposes two deep neural network (NN) variants, 2-layer NN and 3-layer NN of the LDA modeling techniques. The primary goal is to deal with problems with a large corpus using manageable computational resources.

Effects Of Marsh Management In Coastal Marsh Impoundments On Marsh Vertical Accretion In The Face Of Sea Level Rise., Scott P. Graham Mar 2021

Effects Of Marsh Management In Coastal Marsh Impoundments On Marsh Vertical Accretion In The Face Of Sea Level Rise., Scott P. Graham

LSU Master's Theses

Many coastal marshes are managed for wildlife through the use of levees and water control structures. Management techniques such as water manipulation, herbicide application, and controlled burns are used to set back succession and facilitate recruitment of annual plant species, which are highly sought after by many wildlife. These marsh impoundments alter or prevent natural tidal exchange, which might alter or prevent sediment and nutrient inputs to the marsh. Although these management techniques are effective in managing for wildlife, there are few studies comparing vertical accretion between managed and unmanaged marshes. Vertical accretion is important because it allows coastal wetlands …

Adsorption And Transport Of Colloids At Interface And In Bulk, Jingyun Lee Mar 2021

Adsorption And Transport Of Colloids At Interface And In Bulk, Jingyun Lee

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Colloids are suspensions of microscopic insoluble particles dispersed in a continuum phase such as liquid or gas. Colloids are found in our everyday life from food and cosmetic industries to pharmaceutical and biomedical applications. Depending on a global minimum of the free-energy landscape, colloidal suspensions can be classified as two major classes: equilibrium or active colloidal system. This Ph.D dissertation presents strategies to engineer equilibrium self-assembled structures and out-of-equilibrium active matter using various interparticle forces.

First, we introduce the means to promote the equilibrium self-assembled structures driven by adsorption of colloids at interface. Typically, adsorption of colloids at interface is …

Physics - All Scholarship

Vimentin is a structural protein that is required for mesenchymal cell migration and directly interacts with actin, β1 integrin and paxillin. We examined how these interactions enable vimentin to regulate cell migration on collagen. In fibroblasts, depletion of vimentin increased talin-dependent activation of β1 integrin by more than 2-fold. Loss of vimentin was associated with reduction of β1 integrin clustering by 50% and inhibition of paxillin recruitment to focal adhesions by more than 60%, which was restored by vimentin expression. This reduction of paxillin was associated with 65% lower Cdc42 activation, a 60% reduction of cell extension formation and a …

Candida albicans, an opportunistic fungal pathogen, is a significant cause of human infections, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. Phenotypic plasticity between two morphological phenotypes, yeast and hyphae, is a key mechanism by which C. albicans can thrive in many microenvironments and cause disease in the host. Understanding the decision points and key driver genes controlling this important transition and how these genes respond to different environmental signals is critical to understanding how C. albicans causes infections in the host. Here we build and analyze a Boolean dynamical model of the C. albicans yeast to hyphal transition, integrating …

Heterogeneous Bacterial Swarms With Mixed Lengths, Shlomit Peled, Shawn D. Ryan, Sebastian Heidenreich, Markus Baer, Gil Ariel, Avraham Be'er

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Heterogeneous systems of active matter exhibit a range of complex emergent dynamical patterns. In particular, it is difficult to predict the properties of the mixed system based on its constituents. These considerations are particularly significant for understanding realistic bacterial swarms, which typically develop heterogeneities even when grown from a single cell. Here, mixed swarms of cells with different aspect ratios are studied both experimentally and in simulations. In contrast with previous theory, there is no macroscopic phase segregation. However, locally, long cells act as nucleation cites, around which aggregates of short, rapidly moving cells can form, resulting in enhanced swarming …

Nuwu (Southern Paiute), Newe (Western Shoshone), and Nuumu (Owens Valley Paiute) are linguistically related, Numic-speaking peoples who are part of the broader Uto-Aztecan language group. Numic peoples view the land as a holistic, living, sentient being with feelings and purpose. The land is personified with human characteristics and it needs to be experienced to be understood through “learning by doing.” Numic peoples do not support ground disturbing activities within their ancestral lands, including activities tied to the storage of low-level radioactive waste or classified materials on the NNSS, which they view as culturally inappropriate. These deep-rooted ancestral connections are the …
