Impulse Effect On The Food-Limited Population Model With Piecewise Constant Argument, Fatma Karakoç
Impulse Effect On The Food-Limited Population Model With Piecewise Constant Argument, Fatma Karakoç
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The qualitative study of mathematical models is an important area in applied mathematics. In this paper, a version of the food-limited population model with piecewise constant argument under impulse effect is investigated. Differential equations with piecewise constant arguments are related to difference equations. First, a representation for the solutions of the food-limited population model is stated in terms of the solutions of corresponding difference equation. Then using linearized oscillation theory for difference equations, a sufficient condition for the oscillation of the solutions about positive equilibrium point is obtained. Moreover, asymptotic behavior of the non-oscillatory solutions are investigated. Later, applying the …

Multilayer Security Of Rgb Image In Discrete Hartley Domain, Umar H. Mir, Deep Singh, D. C. Mishra, Parveiz N. Lone
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this article, we present RGB image encryption and decryption using random matrix affine cipher (RMAC) associated with discrete Hartley transform (DHT) and random matrix shift cipher (RMSC). The parameters in RMAC and RMSC phases act as two series of secret keys whose arrangement is imperative in the proposed algorithm. The computer simulations with results and examples are given to analyze the efficiency of the proposed approach. Further, security analysis and comparison with the prior techniques successfully supports the robustness and validation of the proposed technique.

Estimating The Age And Mechanism Of Boulder Transport Related With Extreme Waves Using Lichenometry, Maria A. Oliveira, Esteve Llop, César Andrade, Cristina Branquinho, Ronald Goble, Sónia Queiroz, Maria C. Freitas, Pedro Pinho
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Tsunamis and storms cause considerable coastal flooding, numerous fatalities, destruction of structures, and erosion. The characterization of energy and frequency associated with each wave contribute to the risk assessment in coastal regions. Coastal boulder deposits represent a physical proof of extreme inundation and allow us to study the effects of marine floods further back in time than instrumental and historical records. Age estimation of these deposits is challenging due to lack of materials (such as sand, shells, corals, or organic matter) that retain information about the passage of time. Lichenometry, a simple age estimation method, which is cost effective, quick …

Layered transition metal chalcogenides are promising hosts of electronic Weyl nodes and topological superconductivity. MoTe2 is a striking example that harbors both noncentrosymmetric Td and centrosymmetric T' phases, both of which have been identified as topologically nontrivial. Applied pressure tunes the structural transition separating these phases to zero temperature, stabilizing a mixed Td–T' matrix that entails a network of interfaces between the two nontrivial topological phases. Here, we show that this critical pressure range is characterized by distinct coherent quantum oscillations, indicating that the difference in topology between topologically nonvtrivial Td and T' phases gives …

Financial incentives have been introduced in several countries to improve diabetes management. In Ontario, the most populous province in Canada, a Diabetes Management Incentive (DMI) was introduced to family physicians practicing in patient enrollment models in 2006. This paper examines the impact of the DMI on diabetes-related services provided to individuals with diabetes in Ontario. Longitudinal health administrative data were obtained for adults diagnosed with diabetes and their family physicians. The study population consisted of two groups: DMI group (patients enrolled with a family physician exposed to DMI for 3 years), and comparison group (patients affiliated with a family physician …

Deep Learning-Based Reconstruction Of Volumetric Ct Images Of Vertebrae From A Single View X-Ray Image, Mingren Xiang
Deep Learning-Based Reconstruction Of Volumetric Ct Images Of Vertebrae From A Single View X-Ray Image, Mingren Xiang
Theses and Dissertations
Computed tomography is often used in medical fields today because it creates more detailed information for doctors than regular X-ray images. However, one major side effect is that patients may be exposed to a large dose of radiation because it takes hundreds of X-ray images to compute a CT scan. Another shortcoming is that patients are required to lay down on the CT machine for the scan, which is usually not the ideal position when diagnosing spine related issues such as cervical spondylosis and lumbar disc herniation. The prime motivation for this study is to reconstruct CT images using only …

Lightgwas: A Novel Machine Learning Procedure For Genome-Wide Association Study, Ambrozio Bruno, Luca Longo, Lucas Rizzo
Articles
This paper proposes a novel machine learning procedure for genome-wide association study (GWAS), named LightGWAS. It is based on the LightGBM framework, in addition to being a single, resilient, autonomous and scalable solution to address common limitations of GWAS implementations found in the literature. These include reliance on massive manual quality control steps and specific GWAS methods for each type of dataset morphology and size. Through this research, LightGWAS has been contrasted against PLINK2, one of the current state-of-the-art for GWAS implementations based on general linear model with support to firth regularisation. The mean differences measured upon standard classification metrics, …

A Comparative Analysis Of Rule-Based, Model-Agnostic Methods For Explainable Artificial Intelligence, Giulia Vilone, Lucas Rizzo, Luca Longo
Articles
The ultimate goal of Explainable Artificial Intelligence is to build models that possess both high accuracy and degree of explainability. Understanding the inferences of such models can be seen as a process that discloses the relationships between their input and output. These relationships can be represented as a set of inference rules which are usually not explicit within a model. Scholars have proposed several methods for extracting rules from data-driven machine-learned models. However, limited work exists on their comparison. This study proposes a novel comparative approach to evaluate and compare the rulesets produced by four post-hoc rule extractors by employing …

This research analyzes the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's (NATO) Multinational Telemedicine System (MnTS) Project and works to answer five main questions:
1) What challenges did the NATO MnTS Project face that are directly related to the fact that the project included members from different countries and worked to create a system that operates across national borders?
2) How do these challenges compare to those faced by a non-governmental organization (NGO) like the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC)?
3) What successes has the IFRC had with its current operational model?
4) In what ways could …

Electrical magnetoresistance and tunnel diode oscillator measurements were performed under external magnetic fields up to 41 T applied along the crystallographic b axis (hard axis) of UTe2 as a function of temperature and applied pressures up to 18.8 kbar. In this work, we track the field-induced first-order transition between superconducting and magnetic field-polarized phases as a function of applied pressure, showing suppression of the transition with increasing pressure until the demise of superconductivity near 16 kbar and the appearance of a pressure-induced ferromagnetic-like ground state that is distinct from the field-polarized phase and stable at zero field. Together with …

Motivated by models proposed to explain Standard Model anomalies, and the unprecedented τ+τ- data to be collected by the Belle II experiment during the next years, we study the kinematics of tau pair decays and propose a new method to search for lepton flavor violating processes in tau lepton decays to invisible beyond Standard Model particles, such as τ→ℓα, where ℓ is either an electron or a muon, and α is a massive particle that escapes undetected. The new method improves by one order of magnitude the expected upper limit on the τ→ℓα production in 3×1 prong tau decays and …

Contrasting Hydrodynamic Responses To Atmospheric Systems With Different Scales: Impact Of Cold Fronts Vs. That Of A Hurricane, Wei Huang, C. Li
VIMS Articles
In this paper, subtidal responses of Barataria Bay to an atmospheric cold front in 2014 and Hurricane Barry of 2019 are studied. The cold fronts had shorter influencing periods (1 to 3 days), while Hurricane Barry had a much longer influencing period (about 1 week). Wind direction usually changes from southern quadrants to northern quadrants before and after a cold front’s passage. For a hurricane making its landfall at the norther Gulf of Mexico coast, wind variation is dependent on the location relative to the location of landfall. Consequently, water level usually reaches a trough after the maximum cold front …
Unifying Chemistry And Machine Learning For The Study Of Noncovalent Interactions, Jacob A. Townsend
Unifying Chemistry And Machine Learning For The Study Of Noncovalent Interactions, Jacob A. Townsend
Doctoral Dissertations
Gas separations are in great demand for carbon emission reduction, natural gas purification, oxygen isolation, and much more. Many of these separations rely on cost-prohibitive methods such as cryogenic distillation or strong-binding solvents. As a result, novel materials are being developed to subvert the energetic expense of gas separation processes. These studies focus on improving the performance of alternative materials, including (but not limited to) metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, dense polymeric membranes, porous polymers, and ionic liquids.
In this work, the atomistic effects of functional units are explored for gas separations processes using electronic structure theory and machine learning. …

Background: Open Source Software development community relies heavily on users of the software and contributors outside of the core developers to produce top-quality software and provide long-term support. However, the relationship between a software and its contributors in terms of exactly how they are related through dependencies and how the users of a software affect many of its properties are not very well understood.
Aim: My research covers a number of aspects related to answering the overarching question of modeling the software properties affected by users and the supply chain structure of software ecosystems, viz. 1) Understanding how software usage …
Using Second Harmonic Generation To Study Gram-Positive Bacterial Membranes, Lindsey N. Miller
Using Second Harmonic Generation To Study Gram-Positive Bacterial Membranes, Lindsey N. Miller
Doctoral Dissertations
Understanding how small-molecules, such as drugs, interact with bacterial membranes can quickly unravel into much more perplexing questions. No two bacterial species are alike, especially when comparing their membrane compositions which can even be altered by incorporating fatty acids from their surrounding environment into their lipid-membrane composition. To further complicate the comparison, discrete alterations in small-molecule structures can result in vastly different membrane-interaction outcomes, giving rise to the need for more "label-free" studies when analyzing drug mechanisms. The work presented in this dissertation highlights the benefits to using nonlinear spectroscopy and microscopy techniques for probing small-molecule interactions in living bacteria. …

The Importance Of Frontier Orbital Symmetry In The Adsorption Of Diiodobenzene On Mos2(0001), Prescott E. Evans, Zahra Hooshmand, Talat S. Rahman, Peter Dowben
Peter Dowben Publications
Evidence of a role of frontier orbital symmetry, in the adsorption process of diiodobenzene on MoS2(0001), appears in the huge differences in the rate of adsorption between 1,3-diiodobenzene, 1,2-diiodobenzene and 1,4-diiodobenzene isomers on MoS2. Experiments indicate that the rate of adsorption of 1,3-diiodobenzene on MoS2(0001) is much greater than that of the 1,2-diodobenzene and 1,4-diiodbenzene isomers. As the differences in calculated diiodobenzene isomer-MoS2 system adsorption energies and electron affinities are negligible, frontier orbital symmetry appears to play a significant role in diiodobenzene adsorption on MoS2(0001). The experimental and theory results, in combination, suggest …

Macromolecular Structure Determination At X-Ray Free Electron Lasers From Single-Particle Imaging To Time-Resolved X-Ray Crystallography, Ishwor Poudyal
Theses and Dissertations
X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) open the possibility of obtaining diffraction information from a single biological macromolecule. This is because XFELs can generate extremely intense X-ray pulses which are so short that diffraction data can be collected before the sample is destroyed. By collecting a sufficient number of single-particle diffraction patterns from many tilts of a molecule relative to the X-ray beam, the three-dimensional electron density can be reconstructed ab-initio. The resolution and therefore the information content of the data will ultimately depend largely on the number of patterns collected at the experiment. We estimate the number of diffraction patterns required …

Total Synthesis Of Cytotoxic Mansouramycins From Amino Acids, Beatriz Gamez
Total Synthesis Of Cytotoxic Mansouramycins From Amino Acids, Beatriz Gamez
Theses and Dissertations
Natural products produced by plants, animals, and microorganisms are of significant importance in chemistry for being major sources of molecular scaffolds essential for new drug discovery. Mansouramycins are cytotoxic bioactive compounds containing isoquinoline skeletons with substituents on the quinone and pyridine rings that may be difficult to synthesize. Synthetic processes exist for compounds B and D, however, there exists an absence of simple synthetic approaches to all four alkaloids.
This project aims to provide a general total synthetic pathway to Mansouramycins A—D from amino acids for possible use in cancer treatment via these isoquinolinequinones. Preliminary experimentation suggests there may be …
The Dmap-Catalyzed Acylation Of Alcohol -- A Mechanistic Study, Tania Veronica Alvarez Castro
The Dmap-Catalyzed Acylation Of Alcohol -- A Mechanistic Study, Tania Veronica Alvarez Castro
Theses and Dissertations
The mechanistic studies of Acylation of Alcohols catalyzed by 4-(N,N- Dimethyl-amino)-pyridine (DMAP) has been heavily studied in the literature. This reaction has attracted considerable interest from the synthetic and mechanistic points of view in recent years. In this research, the acylation of alcohols is prepared from cyclohexanol and acetic anhydride that is catalyzed by DMAP using triethyl amine (NEt3) as the auxiliary base and dichloromethane (DCM) as solvent. The reaction and final product will be analyzed by using gas chromatography (GC) and reaction progress kinetic analysis (RPKA). The mechanistic insights obtained in the present study should be useful for understanding …

Synthesis, Characterization, And Application Of Meso-Tetraphenyl Metalloporphyrin Photocatalysts Under Visible Light, Alexis Echavarria
Theses and Dissertations
The photocatalytic activity of meso-Tetraphenyl Metalloporphyrins with different metal centers was investigated. The synthesized metalloporphyrin photocatalysts was performed and analyzed using FT-IR spectroscopy, UV-VIS spectroscopy, and powder X-Ray Diffraction analysis. The synthesized TPP crystals were determined to be tetragonal crystal structure and the structure was observed in all synthesized metalloporphyrin catalysts. The Soret (B) bands, Q bands, FT-IR functional groups were identified. Reaction progress was investigated by sampling at intervals of one hour and analysis of the samples was performed using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. GC-MS analysis was used to identify the products of the photochemical catalytic redox reactions performed under …
Reinforcement Learning Environment For Orbital Station-Keeping, Armando Herrera Iii
Reinforcement Learning Environment For Orbital Station-Keeping, Armando Herrera Iii
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, a Reinforcement Learning Environment for orbital station-keeping is created and tested against one of the most used Reinforcement Learning algorithm called Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO). This thesis also explores the foundations of Reinforcement Learning, from the taxonomy to a description of PPO, and shows a thorough explanation of the physics required to make the RL environment. Optuna optimizes PPO's hyper-parameters for the created environment via distributed computing. This thesis then shows and analysis the results from training a PPO agent six times.
On Coupled Reaction Diffusion Equations And Their Applications, Juan J. Huerta
On Coupled Reaction Diffusion Equations And Their Applications, Juan J. Huerta
Theses and Dissertations
Reaction-diffusion equations are nonlinear partial differential equations that have been used extensively in mathematical modeling. An interesting case in this type of equation is the Fisher-Kolmogorov system, which has been used to study a low-grade glioma, a group of primary brain tumors. In the first part of this thesis, a stochastic version of the Fisher-Kolmogorov system will be studied, and exact and numerical solutions will be presented.
The second part of this thesis will show how the speed of information propagation affects disease spread and vaccination uptake through networks in epidemics. In this model, the information reaches different people at …
