Covid-19 And Mental Health/Substance Use Disorders On Reddit: A Longitudinal Study, Amanuel Alambo, Swati Padhee, Tanvi Banerjee, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

COVID-19 pandemic has adversely and disproportionately impacted people suffering from mental health issues and substance use problems. This has been exacerbated by social isolation during the pandemic and the social stigma associated with mental health and substance use disorders, making people reluctant to share their struggles and seek help. Due to the anonymity and privacy they provide, social media emerged as a convenient medium for people to share their experiences about their day to day struggles. Reddit is a well-recognized social media platform that provides focused and structured forums called subreddits, that users subscribe to and discuss their experiences with …

Gasda, Horton Newsom, Abdulmehdi Ali, Eric J. Peterson, Nina Lanza, Adriana Reyes-Newell, Dorothea Delapp, Chris Yeager, Andrea Labouriau, Roger C. Wiens, Samuel Clegg, Shelbie Legett, Debarati Das

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Boron has been detected on Mars [Gasda et al., 2017, Das et al., 2019, 2020] within calciumsulfate veins found within clay-rich rocks on Mars by the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) rover using Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) analysis. Boron plays a vital role in stabilizing ribose on Earth and has been suggested as a key requirement for life [Scorei et al., 2006, 2012; Furukawa et al., 2013, 2017; Becker et al., 2019]. Additionally, boron readily adsorbs to phyllosilicate clay minerals and is often associated with biologic processes in clay soils. The discovery of boron on Mars in proximity to phyllosilicate …

Crash Risk-Based Prioritization Of Basic Safety Message In Dsrc, Seungmo Kim, Byung Jun Kim Nov 2020

Crash Risk-Based Prioritization Of Basic Safety Message In Dsrc, Seungmo Kim, Byung Jun Kim

Michigan Tech Publications

Dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) is one of the key technologies enabling safety-critical applications for intelligent transportation system (ITS). Considering the significance of such safety-of-life applications, it is of utmost importance to guarantee reliable delivery of basic safety messages (BSMs). However, in accordance with a V2X network being inherently dynamic in key aspects such as vehicle density and velocity, the networking behavior of a DSRC system is usually highly complicated to analyze. In addition, the United States Federal Communications Commission (US FCC) recently proposed the so-called “5.9 GHz band innovation”, which includes a plan to reduce bandwidth for DSRC to 10 …

On The Global Operator And Fueter Mapping Theorem For Slice Polyanalytic Functions, Daniel Alpay, Kamal Diki, Irene Sabadini Nov 2020

On The Global Operator And Fueter Mapping Theorem For Slice Polyanalytic Functions, Daniel Alpay, Kamal Diki, Irene Sabadini

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In this paper, we prove that slice polyanalytic functions on quaternions can be considered as solutions of a power of some special global operator with nonconstant coefficients as it happens in the case of slice hyperholomorphic functions. We investigate also an extension version of the Fueter mapping theorem in this polyanalytic setting. In particular, we show that under axially symmetric conditions it is always possible to construct Fueter regular and poly-Fueter regular functions through slice polyanalytic ones using what we call the poly-Fueter mappings. We study also some integral representations of these results on the quaternionic unit ball.

Implementation Of Smartphone Navigation Features By Combined Forces In Determining The Hazards Of Terrorism In Poso, Mahturai Rian Fitra Mrf, Arthur Josias Simon Runturambi Ajsr Nov 2020

Implementation Of Smartphone Navigation Features By Combined Forces In Determining The Hazards Of Terrorism In Poso, Mahturai Rian Fitra Mrf, Arthur Josias Simon Runturambi Ajsr

Journal of Terrorism Studies

The presence of armed terrorist groups in Poso can threaten security conditions in the country because their activities are considered quite dangerous for the surrounding community. This terrorist group did not hesitate to kill civilians who tried to deny its existence. Therefore, various joint military operations have been launched to crush this armed terrorist group, such as Camar Maleo and Tinombala. However, until now this terrorist group is difficult to destroy, due to the condition of the operating area in the form of dense tropical rainforest and steep slopes. This makes it difficult for troops to carry out chases and …

Band Structure Topology And Spin Transport In Magnon Systems, Bo Li Nov 2020

Band Structure Topology And Spin Transport In Magnon Systems, Bo Li

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

As the spin excitation quanta in magnetic materials, the magnon is at the heart of the spintronics research because it plays a key role in magnetic dynamics, energy and spin transport, and even determining the ground state of magnetic systems. In this thesis, we will study the band-structure topology and transport properties of magnons in both collinear and noncollinear magnets. Inspired by the great success of topological insulators, exploring magnon topology can unveil the topological nature of bosonic particles and widen the zoo of topological materials. We propose a three-dimensional magnon topological insulator model protected by sublattice chiral symmetries, which …

Energy-Based Neural Modelling For Large-Scale Multiple Domain Dialogue State Tracking, Anh Duong Trinh, Robert J. Ross, John D. Kelleher Nov 2020

Energy-Based Neural Modelling For Large-Scale Multiple Domain Dialogue State Tracking, Anh Duong Trinh, Robert J. Ross, John D. Kelleher

Conference papers

Scaling up dialogue state tracking to multiple domains is challenging due to the growth in the number of variables being tracked. Furthermore, dialog state tracking models do not yet explicitly make use of relationships between dialogue variables, such as slots across domains. We propose using energy-based structure prediction methods for large-scale dialogue state tracking task in two multiple domain dialogue datasets. Our results indicate that: (i) modelling variable dependencies yields better results; and (ii) the structured prediction output aligns with the dialogue slot-value constraint principles. This leads to promising directions to improve state-of-the-art models by incorporating variable dependencies into their …

Moving Target Network Steganography, Tapan Soni Nov 2020

Moving Target Network Steganography, Tapan Soni

Theses and Dissertations

A branch of information hiding that has gained traction in recent years is network steganography. Network steganography uses network protocols are carriers to hide and transmit data. Storage channel network steganography manipulates values in protocol header and data fields and stores covert data inside them. The timing channel modulates the timing of events in the protocol to transfer covert information. Many current storage channel network steganography methods have low bandwidths and they hide covert data directly into the protocol which allows discoverers of the channel to read the confidential information. A new type of storage channel network steganography method is …

What Martian Meteorites Reveal About The Interior And Surface Of Mars, Arya Udry, G. H. Howarth, C. D.K. Herd, J. M.D. Day, T. J. Lapen, J. Filiberto

Geoscience Faculty Research

Martian meteorites are the only direct samples from Mars, thus far. Currently, there are a total of 262 individual samples originating from at least 11 ejection events. Geochemical analyses, through techniques that are also used on terrestrial rocks, provide fundamental insights into the bulk composition, differentiation and evolution, mantle heterogeneity, and role of secondary processes, such as aqueous alteration and shock, on Mars. Martian meteorites display a wide range in mineralogy and chemistry, but are predominantly basaltic in composition. Over the past 6 years, the number of martian meteorites recovered has almost doubled allowing for studies that evaluate these meteorites …

Non-Hermitian Topology Of One-Dimensional Spin-Torque Oscillator Arrays, Benedetta Flebus, Rembert A. Duine, Hilary M. Hurst Nov 2020

Non-Hermitian Topology Of One-Dimensional Spin-Torque Oscillator Arrays, Benedetta Flebus, Rembert A. Duine, Hilary M. Hurst

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Magnetic systems have been extensively studied both from a fundamental physics perspective and as building blocks for a variety of applications. Their topological properties, in particular those of excitations, remain relatively unexplored due to their inherently dissipative nature. The recent introduction of non-Hermitian topological classifications opens up new opportunities for engineering topological phases in dissipative systems. Here, we propose a magnonic realization of a non-Hermitian topological system. A crucial ingredient of our proposal is the injection of spin current into the magnetic system, which alters and can even change the sign of terms describing dissipation. We show that the magnetic …

Autonomous Vehicles And The Ethical Tension Between Occupant And Non-Occupant Safety, Jason Borenstein, Joseph Herkert, Keith Miller Nov 2020

Autonomous Vehicles And The Ethical Tension Between Occupant And Non-Occupant Safety, Jason Borenstein, Joseph Herkert, Keith Miller

The Journal of Sociotechnical Critique

Given that the creation and deployment of autonomous vehicles is likely to continue, it is important to explore the ethical responsibilities of designers, manufacturers, operators, and regulators of the technology. We specifically focus on the ethical responsibilities surrounding autonomous vehicles that these stakeholders have to protect the safety of non-occupants, meaning individuals who are around the vehicles while they are operating. The term “non-occupants” includes, but is not limited to, pedestrians and cyclists. We are particularly interested in how to assign moral responsibility for the safety of non-occupants when autonomous vehicles are deployed in a complex, land-based transportation system.

The Sets Of Julia And Mandelbrot For Multi-Dimensional Case Of Logistic Mapping, R.N. Ganikhodzhaev, Sh.J Seytov, I.N Obidjonov, L.O Sadullayev

Central Asian Problems of Modern Science and Education

The present paper is devoted to investigation of the multidimensional case of the logistic mapping on the plane to itself. In this paper we learnt the properties of the sets of Julia and Mandelbrot for some two-dimensional logistic mappings. The sets of Julia and Mandelbrot help to define asymptotical behavior of the trajectories of certain mappings. The analytical solutions of the equations for finding fixed and periodic points and the computational simulations for describing the sets of Julia and Mandelbrot are the main results of this paper

A Spatial And Multivariate Approach To Examining Effects Of Urbanization On Nitrogen Sources, Organic Matter Inputs, And Trophic Structure In Streams Of Cobb And Paulding Counties, Georgia., Katharine Horning Nov 2020

A Spatial And Multivariate Approach To Examining Effects Of Urbanization On Nitrogen Sources, Organic Matter Inputs, And Trophic Structure In Streams Of Cobb And Paulding Counties, Georgia., Katharine Horning

Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses

Urbanization and land use changes have a negative effect on streams often causing numerous physical changes in stream morphology, a change in nutrient concentrations, and altered ecosystems contributing to a loss of habitat, decreased biodiversity, and loss of stability for ecosystem function (Walsh et al., 2005; Meyer et al., 2005; Cardinale and Palmer, 2012). The use of stable isotope analysis for monitoring could be valuable because it accounts for temporal integration from anthropogenic wastewater inputs, characterized by a shift in the abundance of 15N. This project had three main objectives: (1) to examine how nitrogen and carbon sources are …

Tidal Locking And The Gravitational Fold Catastrophe, Andrea Ferroglia, Miguel C. N. Fiolhais Nov 2020

Tidal Locking And The Gravitational Fold Catastrophe, Andrea Ferroglia, Miguel C. N. Fiolhais

Publications and Research

The purpose of this work is to study the phenomenon of tidal locking in a pedagogical framework by analyzing the effective gravitational potential of a two-body system with two spinning objects. It is shown that the effective potential of such a system is an example of a fold catastrophe. In fact, the existence of a local minimum and saddle point, corresponding to tidally locked circular orbits, is regulated by a single dimensionless control parameter that depends on the properties of the two bodies and on the total angular momentum of the system. The method described in this work results in …

The Future Environmental And Health Impacts Of Coal, Robert B. Finkelman, Amy L. Wolfe, Michael S. Hendryx Nov 2020

The Future Environmental And Health Impacts Of Coal, Robert B. Finkelman, Amy L. Wolfe, Michael S. Hendryx

Faculty, Staff, and Affiliated Publications--KGS

In the United States, coal consumption in the last 12 years has declined from 1,045,140 million short tons in 2007 to 539,420 million short tons in 2019, a decrease of almost 50%. During that period the number of electric power coal generators has declined from 1,470 to 738 accounting for 21% of capacity. An even more dramatic decrease in coal use has occurred in Western Europe. This significant reduction in coal use and the concomitant closure of coal mines and coal-burning power plants will result in substantially cleaner air, reductions in respiratory problems such as asthma, less heart disease, fewer …
