Xenon Iron Oxides Predicted As Potential Xe Hosts In Earth’S Lower Mantle, Feng Peng, Xianqi Song, Chang Liu, Quan Li, Maosheng Miao, Changfeng Chen, Yanming Ma

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research

An enduring geological mystery concerns the missing xenon problem, referring to the abnormally low concentration of xenon compared to other noble gases in Earth’s atmosphere. Identifying mantle minerals that can capture and stabilize xenon has been a great challenge in materials physics and xenon chemistry. Here, using an advanced crystal structure search algorithm in conjunction with first-principles calculations we find reactions of xenon with recently discovered iron peroxide FeO2, forming robust xenon-iron oxides Xe2FeO2 and XeFe3O6 with significant Xe-O bonding in a wide range of pressure-temperature conditions corresponding to vast regions in Earth’s lower mantle. Calculated mass density and sound …

Structural evolution in functional materials is a physicochemical phenomenon, which is important from a fundamental study point of view and for its applications in magnetism, catalysis, and nuclear waste immobilization. In this study, we used x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy to examine the Gd2Hf2O7 (GHO) pyrochlore, and we showed that it underwent a thermally induced crystalline phase evolution. Superconducting quantum interference device measurements were carried out on both the weakly ordered pyrochlore and the fully ordered phases. These measurements suggest a weak magnetism for both pyrochlore phases. Spin density calculations showed that the Gd3+ …

The Electrochemical And Corrosion Study Of Copper For Nuclear Waste Containers Under Deep Geological Disposal Conditions, Mengnan Guo Oct 2020

The Electrochemical And Corrosion Study Of Copper For Nuclear Waste Containers Under Deep Geological Disposal Conditions, Mengnan Guo

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The proposed method for the safe disposal of Swedish, Finnish, and Canadian high-level nuclear waste (HLNW) is to isolate it in iron or steel containers with an outer copper (Cu) shell or coating and bury it in a deep geological repository (DGR). Copper has been selected as the corrosion barrier due to its stability in the aqueous anoxic environments anticipated in DGR conditions. The container will initially be exposed to humid aerated conditions which will evolve to cool and anoxic as radiation fields in the fuel decay and heat production ceases. When the DGR is cool and anoxic, sulphide (SH …

Using Spatial Analysis And Machine Learning Techniques To Develop A Comprehensive Highway-Rail Grade Crossing Consolidation Model, Samira Soleimani Oct 2020

Using Spatial Analysis And Machine Learning Techniques To Develop A Comprehensive Highway-Rail Grade Crossing Consolidation Model, Samira Soleimani

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The safety of highway-railroad grade crossings (HRGC) is still an issue in the United States of America (USA). The grade crossing is where a railroad crosses a road at the same level without any over or underpass. To improve the safety of crossings, the crossings’ condition should be explored from several aspects such as engineering design (speed limit, warning signs, etc.), road condition (number of lanes, surface markings, etc.), rail design (the type of track, ballast, etc.), temporal variables (weather, visibility, time of day, lightning, etc.), social variables (population, race, etc.), and last but not least, spatial variables (the type …

Pinning The Conformation Of A Protein (Cora) In A Solute Matrix With Selective Binding, Warin Rangubpit, Sunan Kitjaruwankul, Pornthep Sompornpisut, R. B. Pandey Oct 2020

Pinning The Conformation Of A Protein (Cora) In A Solute Matrix With Selective Binding, Warin Rangubpit, Sunan Kitjaruwankul, Pornthep Sompornpisut, R. B. Pandey

Faculty Publications

Conformation of a protein (CorA) is examined in a matrix with mobile solute constituents as a function of solute–residue interaction strength (f) by a coarse-grained model with a Monte Carlo simulation. Solute particles are found to reach their targeted residue due to their unique interactions with the residues. Degree of slowing down of the protein depends on the interaction strength f. Unlike a predictable dependence of the radius of gyration of the same protein on interaction in an effective medium, it does not show a systematic dependence on interaction due to pinning caused by the solute binding. …

Do "Brassy" Sounding Musical Instruments Need Increased Safe Distancing Requirements To Minimize The Spread Of Covid-19?, Thomas R. Moore, Ashley E. Cannaday

Faculty Publications

Brass wind instruments with long sections of cylindrical pipe, such as trumpets and trombones, sound “brassy” when played at a fortissimo level due to the generation of a shock front in the instrument. It has been suggested that these shock fronts may increase the spread of COVID-19 by propelling respiratory particles containing the SARS-CoV-2 virus several meters due to particle entrainment in the low pressure area behind the shocks. To determine the likelihood of this occurring, fluorescent particles, ranging in size from 10–50 lm, were dropped into the shock regions produced by a trombone, a trumpet, and a shock tube. …

© The Royal Society of Chemistry. High-performance water-soluble polymers have a wide range of applications from engineering materials to biomedical plastics. However, existing materials are either natural polymers that lack high thermostability or rigid synthetic polymers. Therefore, we design an amino acid-derived building block, 4,4′-diamino-α-truxillate dianion (4ATA2−), that induces water solubility in high-performance polymers. Polyimides containing 4ATA2− units are intrinsically water-soluble and are processed into films cast from an aqueous solution. The resulting polyimide films exhibit exceptional transparency and extremely high thermal stability. In addition, the films can be made insoluble in water by simple post-treatment using …

Evaluation Of The Extractive Gold Process: Open-Pit Mining Through Exergy Analysis, Hector I. Velasquez, Carlos Andres Orozco Loaiza, Christian Hasenstab, Natalia A. Cano Oct 2020

Evaluation Of The Extractive Gold Process: Open-Pit Mining Through Exergy Analysis, Hector I. Velasquez, Carlos Andres Orozco Loaiza, Christian Hasenstab, Natalia A. Cano

Journal of Sustainable Mining

The Colombian mining sector is characterized by the production of coal, nickel, emeralds, gold, and construction materials. It is considered by the National Development Plan of Colombia 2018-2022 as an economic agent that boosts development in the region and one that requires the strengthening of its policies and environmental liability. Therefore, this paper aims to show the importance of implementing methodologies based on the logic of nature (exergy) that objectively indicate the environmental impact of an extractive gold activity, such as open-pit gold mining. The extractive activity or process to be studied consists of the following stages: topsoil removal by …

Exergy Life Cycle Assessment Indicators In Colombian Gold Mining Sector, Natalia A. Cano, Christian Hasenstab, Hector I. Velasquez Oct 2020

Exergy Life Cycle Assessment Indicators In Colombian Gold Mining Sector, Natalia A. Cano, Christian Hasenstab, Hector I. Velasquez

Journal of Sustainable Mining

Thermodynamic methods, such as exergy analysis allow the assessment of environmental load (environmental impacts), by calculating the entropy generated or exergy destroyed due to the use of renewable and non-renewable resources along the entire production chain. In this research, exergy analysis will be approached as an extension of LCA to ExLCA (Exergy Life Cycle Assessment), as complementary tools, for sustainability assessment of two gold mining systems in Colombia: open-pit and alluvial mining. It is quantified exergy life cycle efficiencies; Cumulative Energy/ Exergy Demand, by distinguishing between renewable and non-renewable resources used in the process. The energy contained in renewable and …

True Cost Of Coal: Coal Mining Industry And Its Associated Environmental Impacts On Water Resource Development, Noshin Masood, Karen Hudson-Edwards, Abida Farooqi

Journal of Sustainable Mining

Coal is a strategic and essential resource that ensures quality of life, energy security and sustainable development. Being the cheapest source of energy, it is the second after oil that is used to generate 40% of the world's electricity. However, traditional and conventional coal fuel extraction can threaten human health bycontaminating air and water, harming land, and contributing to global warming. The environmental impacts associated with conventional methods of coal mining and consumption can affect all components of the environment, and these impacts may be beneficial or harmful, permanent or temporary, repairable or irreparable, and reversible or irreversible in nature. …

Scale Mis-Matches When Assessing Chloride Concentration And Corrosiveness Using Statewide Data For Trend Analysis, Rebecca L. Kauten Oct 2020

Scale Mis-Matches When Assessing Chloride Concentration And Corrosiveness Using Statewide Data For Trend Analysis, Rebecca L. Kauten

International Journal of Geospatial and Environmental Research

This study compares chloride concentrations and a series of corrosiveness indexes to determine whether trends in statewide databases appropriately detect local conditions. Chloride concentrations in local, urban streams generally persist at higher levels than what is typical of natural waters. Data collected for statewide water quality assessments are often at a broader geographical scale. Results and subsequent policies may indicate little to no environmental concern, meanwhile degradation at the local scale remains relatively undetected. Pulses of local snowmelt runoff may violate water quality criteria, but long-term trends measured at the statewide scale are in decline. Results highlight the need for …

Calaforra, Philippe Audra, Jean Y. Bigot, Teresa Pi Puig, Rocío J. Alcántara-Hernández, Ángel Navarro, Philippe Crochet, Liliana Corona Martínez, Raquel Daza Brunet

International Journal of Speleology

Folia are speleothems that resemble bells, inverted cups, or bracket fungi, and whose origins are still controversial. Cenote Zapote (an underwater cave) in the Yucatán Peninsula (México), is home to some of the largest folia reported to date. These speleothems are currently growing in an active underwater system, meaning this site offers an excellent opportunity to constrain the different formation models proposed for folia, which have traditionally relied on inactive examples. In Cenote Zapote, folia are closely related to bubble trails and cupolas, suggesting an underwater CO2-degassing process. In thin section, they display a succession of columnar-open and …
