What Cities Can Learn From Trees: Lessons In Urban Ecomimicry, Nathan Phillips Oct 2020

What Cities Can Learn From Trees: Lessons In Urban Ecomimicry, Nathan Phillips

Sustainability Seminar Series

Tree physiologists use a vernacular that translates amazingly well as a lens for understanding the structure, function, and sustainability of cities. Concepts of tree architecture such as efficiency, safety, vulnerability and their tradeoffs find parallels in our urban water, energy and food networks. In this talk I will compare and contrast the world of trees with that of cities and explore how urban planners and policymakers can learn from trees how to build more resilient and sustainable cities.

Optical Properties And Composition Of Viscous Organic Particles Found In The Southern Great Plains, Matthew Fraund, Daniel Bonanno, Swarup China, Don Q. Pham, Daniel Veghte, Johannes Weis, Gourihar Kulkarni, Ken Teske, Mary K. Gilles, Alexander Laskin, Ryan C. Moffet

Department of Chemistry Student Articles

Atmospheric high-viscosity organic particles (HVOPs) were observed in samples of ambient aerosols collected in April and May 2016 in the Southern Great Plains of the United States. These particles were apportioned as either airborne soil organic particles (ASOPs) or tar balls (TBs) from biomass burning based on spetro-microscopic imaging and assessments of meteorological records of smoke and precipitation data. Regardless of their apportionment, the number fractions of HVOPs were positively correlated (R2=0.85) with increased values of absorption Ångström exponent (AAE) measured in situ for ambient aerosol at the site. Extending this correlation to 100 % HVOPs yields an …

Soft Ion Sputtering Of Pani Studied By Xps, Afm, Tof-Sims, And Sts, Christopher M. Goodwin, Zachary E. Voras, Xiao Tong, Thomas P. Beebe, Jr.

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Herein is a study of the soft sputtering method, gas cluster ion sputtering (GCIS), and its effects on the atomic, morphologic, and band structure properties of polyaniline (PAni) as studied with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry, atomic force microscopy, and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS). The GCIS source used was a 1000 argon atom cluster with 4 keV energy, which resulted in a sputter yield of 3.4 ± 0.2 × 10−3 nm3 per argon atom. Soft ion sputtering reduced the sample by explicitly removing the oxidized contaminants as determined by surface sensitive techniques: XPS and Time-of-flight secondary …

Phyllotaxis As Geometric Canalization During Plant Development, Christophe Godin, Christophe Golé, Stéphane Douady Oct 2020

Phyllotaxis As Geometric Canalization During Plant Development, Christophe Godin, Christophe Golé, Stéphane Douady

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

Why living forms develop in a relatively robust manner, despite various sources of internal or external variability, is a fundamental question in developmental biology. Part of the answer relies on the notion of developmental constraints: at any stage of ontogenesis, morphogenetic processes are constrained to operate within the context of the current organism being built. One such universal constraint is the shape of the organism itself, which progressively channels the development of the organism toward its final shape. Here, we illustrate this notion with plants, where strikingly symmetric patterns (phyllotaxis) are formed by lateral organs. This Hypothesis article aims first …

Chemical Synthesis Of Homogeneous Human E-Cadherin N-Linked Glycopeptides: Stereoselective Convergent Glycosylation And Chemoselective Solid-Phase Aspartylation, Chen Zeng, Bin Sun, Xuefeng Cao, Joshua Zhu, Olawale Micheal Oluwadahunsi, Ding Liu, He Zhu, Jiabin Zhang, Qing Zhang, Gaolan Zhang, Christopher Andrew Gibbons, Yunpeng Liu, Jun Zhou, Peng George Wang

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

We report herein an efficient chemical synthesis of homogeneous human E-cadherin N-linked glycopeptides consisting of a heptapeptide sequence adjacent to the Asn-633 N-glycosylation site with representative N-glycan structures, including a conserved trisaccharide, a core-fucosylated tetrasaccharide, and a complex-type biantennary octasaccharide. The key steps are a chemoselective on-resin aspartylation using a pseudoproline-containing peptide and stereoselective glycosylation using glycosyl fluororide as a donor. This synthetic strategy demonstrates potential utility in accessing a wide range of homogeneous N-linked glycopeptides for the examination of their biological function.

Adaptive Multimodal Fusion For Facial Action Units Recognition, Huiyuan Yang, Taoyue Wang, Lijun Yin Oct 2020

Adaptive Multimodal Fusion For Facial Action Units Recognition, Huiyuan Yang, Taoyue Wang, Lijun Yin

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Multimodal facial action units (AU) recognition aims to build models that are capable of processing, correlating, and integrating information from multiple modalities (i.e., 2D images from a visual sensor, 3D geometry from 3D imaging, and thermal images from an infrared sensor). Although the multimodal data can provide rich information, there are two challenges that have to be addressed when learning from multimodal data: 1) the model must capture the complex cross-modal interactions in order to utilize the additional and mutual information effectively; 2) the model must be robust enough in the circumstance of unexpected data corruptions during testing, in case …

High-Resolution Movies Of Molecular Rotational Dynamics Captured With Ultrafast Electron Diffraction, Yanwei Xiong, Kyle J. Wilkin, Martin Centurion

Martin Centurion Publications

Imaging the structure of molecules during a photoinduced reaction is essential for elucidating reaction mechanisms. This requires high spatiotemporal resolution to capture nuclear motions on the femtosecond and subangstrom scale, and a sufficiently high signal level to sample their continuous evolution with high fidelity. Here we show that, using high-repetition-rate ultrafast electron diffraction, we can accurately reconstruct a movie of the coherent rotational motion of laser-aligned nitrogen molecules. We have used a tabletop 90-keV photoelectron gun to simultaneously achieve high temporal resolution of 240 fs full width at half maximum and an electron beam current that is more than an …

Indigenous Guardianship And Moose Monitoring: Weaving Indigenous And Western Ways Of Knowing, Jesse N. Popp, Pauline Priadka, Megan Young, Kevin Koch, James Morgan

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Increasing global rates of wildlife species extinctions, extirpations, and declines warrant improvements to population monitoring and management approaches. To address regional environmental and wildlife issues, Indigenous communities globally are re-establishing traditional roles as stewards of the land through emerging Indigenous Guardianship Programs (IGPs). By providing the opportunity for community-level participation in monitoring and management, IGPs help foster cohesive solutions for long-term conservation of species while promoting environmental stewardship at the community level. Addressing challenges in monitoring and management of wildlife is especially critical for species that are of cultural and ecological importance at both community and distribution-wide scales. Herein, we …

Spatial And Temporal Dynamics Of Human–Wildlife Conflicts In The Kenya Greater Tsavo Ecosystem, Joseph M. Mukeka, Joseph O. Ogutu, Erustus Kanga, Eivin Røskaft

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Biodiversity conservation in developing countries is faced with many and mounting challenges, including increasing human–wildlife conflicts (HWCs). In Africa and other developing countries, increasing HWCs, particularly those adjacent to protected areas, can adversely affect local stakeholder perceptions and support for conservation. We analyzed HWC reports for multiple wildlife species compiled >23 years (1995–2017) from the Greater Tsavo Ecosystem (GTE) in Kenya to determine HWC trends. The GTE is the largest protected area in Kenya, covering 22,681 km2. Overall, 39,022 HWC incidents were reported in 6 GTE regions (i.e., Taveta, Mutomo, Kibwezi, Rombo, Galana, Bachuma). The 5 wildlife species …

© 2020. The American Astronomical Society. All rights reserved.. We present a search for continuous gravitational waves from five radio pulsars, comprising three recycled pulsars (PSR J0437-4715, PSR J0711-6830, and PSR J0737-3039A) and two young pulsars: the Crab pulsar (J0534+2200) and the Vela pulsar (J0835-4510). We use data from the third observing run of Advanced LIGO and Virgo combined with data from their first and second observing runs. For the first time, we are able to match (for PSR J0437-4715) or surpass (for PSR J0711-6830) the indirect limits on gravitational-wave emission from recycled pulsars inferred from their observed spin-downs, and …

Toughening A Superstrong Carbon Crystal: Sequential Bond-Breaking Mechanisms, Hui Liang, Hefei Li, Quan Li, Changfeng Chen

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research

A complex orthorhombic carbon allotrope in Pbam symmetry with 32 atoms in its unit cell, thus termed Pbam-32 carbon, was recently predicted [C. Y. He et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 175701 (2018)]. Its crystal structure comprises alternating fivefold, sixfold, and sevenfold carbon rings and exhibits reduced bonding anisotropy compared to diamond, raising the prospects of finding a superstrong material with distinct and favorable mechanical properties. Here we report findings from first-principles calculations that reveal peculiar stress-strain relations in Pbam-32 carbon. The obtained stress responses under various tensile and shear strains display outstanding characteristics contrasting those of traditional superhard materials …

Resource Selection At Homesites By Wolves And Eastern Coyotes In A Canis Hybrid Zone, Teresa Oliveira, John F. Benson, Connor Thompson, Brent R. Patterson

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

We modeled resource selection by wolves (Canis spp.), eastern coyotes (C. latrans), and admixed canids during the pup-rearing season at den and rendezvous sites (collectively, homesites) within a largely unprotected landscape proposed as the recovery zone for federally and provincially threatened eastern wolves (C. lycaon) in Ontario, Canada. Overall, canids selected wetlands, while avoiding secondary roads and open-structure rock-grass habitat patches. Packs with greater wolf ancestry selected wetlands and tertiary roads more strongly, while avoiding mixed conifer-hardwood forests. Contrary to our prediction, canids with greater coyote ancestry did not establish homesites closer to roads, which likely mitigated their risk of …
