How Wendy Red Star Decolonizes The Museum With Humor And Play, Salma Monani, Nicole Seymour Oct 2020

How Wendy Red Star Decolonizes The Museum With Humor And Play, Salma Monani, Nicole Seymour

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Museums play a prominent role in crafting racial narratives in the United States, and as evidenced by recent social uprisings, these institutions have come under scrutiny. Take, for example, the statue outside the American Museum of Natural History in New York, which depicts U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt on horseback flanked by a Black man and an American Indian, both unnamed. As National Public Radio reported in June 2020, “The statue was intended to pay homage to Roosevelt as a ‘devoted naturalist and author of works on natural history,’” but, in calling for its removal, Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office affirmed …

Each year, the INFORMS Edelman Award celebrates the best and most impactful implementations of operations research, management science, and analytics. As the Edelman Award approaches its 50-year mark, we provide a history and characterization of the award’s finalists and winners. We provide some basic descriptive analytics about the participating organizations and authors, the impact of their work, and the methods they employed. We also conduct predictive analytics on finalist submissions, gauging contributors to success in establishing winning entries. We find that predicting Edelman winners a priori is extremely difficult; however, given a set of finalists, predictive models based on monetary …

Advancing Best Practices For Aversion Conditioning (Humane Hazing) To Mitigate Human–Coyote Conflicts In Urban Areas, Lesley Sampson, Lauren Van Patter

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Coyotes (Canis latrans) are now recognized as a permanent feature in urban environments across much of North America. Behavioral aversion conditioning, or humane hazing, is increasingly advocated as an effective and compassionate alternative to wildlife management strategies, such as trap and removal. Given a growing public interest in humane hazing, there is a need to synthesize the science regarding methods, outcomes, efficacy, and other relevant considerations to better manage human–coyote conflicts in urban areas. This paper was prepared as an outcome of a workshop held in July 2019 by Coyote Watch Canada (CWC) to synthesize the literature on …

The Efficient Synthesis Of D-Xylulose And Formal Synthesis Of Syringolide 1, Sudhakar Kalagara, Gabriel Orozco, Shizue Mito Oct 2020

The Efficient Synthesis Of D-Xylulose And Formal Synthesis Of Syringolide 1, Sudhakar Kalagara, Gabriel Orozco, Shizue Mito

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Wittig reaction and asymmetric dihydroxylation were used as the key steps in the synthesis of D-xylulose, a commercially available but costly carbohydrate. The effects of protecting groups and reactions conditions on asymmetric dihydroxylation are demonstrated. Optically pure D-xylulose was obtained after 4-6 steps from readily available hydroxyacetone and ethylene glycol. The method also involves some other valuable intermediates along the synthesis. Those intermediates were applied in the formal synthesis of Syringolides. A key precursor butenolide to Syringolide 1, the first non-proteinaceous specific elicitors of plant hypersensitive response, was obtained after 3 steps from the intermediate (8–10 steps from hydroxyacetone and …

Schrödinger-Pauli Theory Of Electrons: New Perspectives, Viraht Sahni Oct 2020

Schrödinger-Pauli Theory Of Electrons: New Perspectives, Viraht Sahni

Publications and Research

The Schrödinger-Pauli (SP) theory of electrons in an electromagnetic field explicitly accounts for the electron spin moment. The many-electron theory is complemented via a new descriptive perspective viz. that of the individual electron via its equation of motion or ‘Quantal Newtonian’ first law. The law is in terms of ‘classical’ fields whose sources are quantum mechanical expectation values of Hermitian operators taken with respect to the system wave function. The law states that each electron experiences an external and an internal field, the sum of which vanish. The external field is the sum of the binding electrostatic and a Lorentz …

Exploitation, Fear And Restitution: The Story Of Tuluwat Today, Joshua K. Overington

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

Genocide continues to have everlasting effects on the it’s victims across the globe. In Humboldt county one of the most harrowing atrocities was the massacre of 1860 on Tuluwat island. In 2019 the City of Eureka returned the island to the Wiyot Tribe because of Tuluwat’s cultural significance to the local Native population. The following narrative details my personal experiences and research delving into the lasting effects of this mass murder, the way it’s story is told now and the reparations being made today. While doing this I learned more about the island through personal testimonies, local signage and attending …

Chemical Reactions At Metal Surfaces: Functionalization Strategies And Spectroscopic Characterization, Sydney Legge Oct 2020

Chemical Reactions At Metal Surfaces: Functionalization Strategies And Spectroscopic Characterization, Sydney Legge

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Tremendous interest in increasing the control over surface properties has led to high demand for new efficient methods for chemical surface modifications. In this work, several approaches toward surface functionalization are explored, and modified surfaces are subsequently characterized using uniquely suited spectroscopic techniques. In the first part of this thesis, strain-promoted alkyne-azide cycloaddition (SPAAC) reactions are investigated for their potential to precisely tune the surface properties of gold substrates at the monolayer level. The utility of SPAAC reactions in preparing biorecognition interfaces for cell adhesion is then examined. Polarization modulation infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy is used to characterize adsorbed monolayers and …

Journal of Sustainable Mining

This paper focuses on the identification of some plant accumulators of heavy metals that can facilitate mine remediation and rehabilitation in the Philippines and metal recovery or phytomining. Most of these hyperaccumulators are ferns that thrive very well in different terrains and of particular interest are Pityrogramma calomelanos, Pteris vittata, and Pteris melanocaulon that are abundant in abandoned CueAu mining areas. The amounts of Cu and As in the soil and in the aboveground (AG) and belowground (BG) components of the accumulator ferns were determined and the Bioaccumulation Factor (BF) and the Translocation Factor (TF) were derived. Efforts to …

A Lab Study Of Mineral Scale Buildup On Line And Traditional Pe Water Pipes For Acid Mine Drainage, Amanda Pezzuto, Emily Sarver Oct 2020

A Lab Study Of Mineral Scale Buildup On Line And Traditional Pe Water Pipes For Acid Mine Drainage, Amanda Pezzuto, Emily Sarver

Journal of Sustainable Mining

Plastic, especially polyethylene (PE), pipe material is increasingly used in mining applications due to its inert nature, flexibility, low density, and low cost. Though resistant to chemical corrosion, it is susceptible to abrasion. To combat this problem, an abrasion-resistant liner is in development. However, it is not yet known how the liner will perform with regards to other common problems that affect pipe systems, such as mineral scale buildup. In mining applications, scale buildup occurs due to the very high contents of suspended and dissolved solids in water or slurry. For example, in systems transporting raw or treated acid mine …

Prospective Study On Safety Climate Of Surface Mining In Pakistan, Izhar Mithal Jiskani, Saleem Raza Chalgri, Safiullah Memon, Niaz Muhammad Shahani, Abdullah Rasheed Qureshi

Journal of Sustainable Mining

The purpose of this study was to assess miners' perceptions about the safety climate of their workplace. To achieve the research aim, the relationship between demographic characteristics and occupational hazards was first determined, and finally, the relationship of safety climate with occupational hazards and health-seeking behavior was discovered. The data was collected through a self-reporting questionnaire. The results revealed that the subjects have to deal with severe occupational hazards, and they possess poor health-seeking behavior. A safety climate assessment showed that only one of the seven dimensions (i.e. safety communication, learning, and trust in co-worker safety competence) was at …

Effect Of An Eccentric Decoupled Charge On Rock Mass Blasting, Jung-Gyu Kim, Mahrous A. M. Ali, Jong-Gwan Kim Oct 2020

Effect Of An Eccentric Decoupled Charge On Rock Mass Blasting, Jung-Gyu Kim, Mahrous A. M. Ali, Jong-Gwan Kim

Journal of Sustainable Mining

Experimental and numerical analyses were conducted to investigate the effect of an eccentric loaded contour hole on a rock mass. In the concrete blocks used for the analyses, detonating cords were placed at the centre of the blast hole and eccentrically against the wall of the blast hole. PFC2D and AUTODYN were used for the numerical analyses, and the results of these software showed that an eccentric decoupled charge can result in the directional development of fractures, thereby enabling the control of cracks in the opposite direction. Even though both types of blasting have identical decoupling indexes, the crack …

Laboratory Experiments To Study The Effect Of Temperature On Cigs Solar Cells, Asliddin Komilov Oct 2020

Laboratory Experiments To Study The Effect Of Temperature On Cigs Solar Cells, Asliddin Komilov

Acta of Turin Polytechnic University in Tashkent

Abstract - In this work, we studied the effect of temperature on CIGS solar cells as a function of the thickness of the CdS buffer layer. It was found that with an increase in temperature in CIGS-based solar cells (SC), an increase in the acceptor doping concentration occurs in the region where carrier-generation- recombination prevails. It was also established that in solar cells with a thin buffer layer, generationrecombination through interface prevail, and the temperature influences them more.

Modular Synthesis And Transition Metal-Free Alkynylation/Alkenylation Of Castagnoli–Cushmanderived N,O- And N,S-Heterocyclic Vinyl Chlorides, Timothy K. Beng, Abdikani Omar Farah, Victoria Shearer

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

A modular and functional group-tolerant protocol for the transition metal-free coupling of novel N,O- and N,S-heterocyclic vinyl chlorides with terminal acetylenes and styrenes has been developed, leading to the epimerization-free synthesis of fully carbofunctionalized dihydro-1,4-oxazines/thiazines. Bicyclic morpholines have also been prepared through the interrogation of newly synthesized cross-conjugated dienes in Diels–Alder reactions. The use of environmentally benign reaction media endows the current strategy with a practical advantage.
