Algal Biomarkers As A Proxy For Pco2: Constraints From Late Quaternary Sapropels In The Eastern Mediterranean, Caitlyn R. Witkowski, Marcel T.J. Van Der Meer, Brian Blais, Jaap S. Sinninghe Damsté, Stefan Schouten

Science and Technology Department Faculty Journal Articles

Records of carbon dioxide concentrations (partial pressure expressed as pCO2) over Earth’s history provide trends that are critical to understand our changing world. To better constrain pCO2 estimations, here we test organic pCO2 proxies against the direct measurements of pCO2 recorded in ice cores. Based on the concept of stable carbon isotopic fractionation due to photosynthetic CO2 fixation (Ɛp), we use the stable carbon isotopic composition (δ13C) of the recently proposed biomarker phytol (from all photoautotrophs), as well as the conventionally used alkenone biomarkers (from specific species) for comparison, to reconstruct pCO2 over several Quaternary …

Large Scale Upper-Level Precursors For Dust Storm Formation Over North Africa And Poleward Transport To The Iberian Peninsula. Part I: An Observational Analysis, J.A. G. Orza, Michael L. Kaplan, S. Dhital, S. Fiedler

Publications

The analysis of three extreme African dust outbreaks over the Iberian Peninsula (IP) shows that a double Rossby wave breaking (RWB) process in the polar jet (PJ) creates the conditions for dust storm formation over subtropical deserts in North Africa and the restructuring of upper-level air flows critical for the dust transport poleward after ablation. Two consecutive anticyclonic RWBs initiate over the IP and the adjacent Atlantic, the first commencing 10 days before dust reaches the IP and the second three to five days later. The first RWB becomes quasi-stationary over the eastern Mediterranean when the second RWB develops. In …

Indium Segregation To The Selvedge Of In4Se3 (001), Archit Dhingra, Zoe G. Marzouk, Esha Mishra, Pavlo V. Galiy, Taras M. Nenchuk, Peter Dowben Sep 2020

Indium Segregation To The Selvedge Of In4Se3 (001), Archit Dhingra, Zoe G. Marzouk, Esha Mishra, Pavlo V. Galiy, Taras M. Nenchuk, Peter Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

Thermal motion of the surface atoms will lead to a decrease in photoemission intensity, while surface segregation may result in an increase of some phostoemission intensities. For In4Se3(001), both effects are seen. The Debye–Waller factor plot, based on the temperature dependent X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) measurements on In4Se3(001), suggests an upper bound of 203 ± 6 K for the effective Debye temperature, based on the surface component of the In 3d5/2 core-level. Indium is found to segregate to selvedge (subsurface region) of the crystal.

F-Measure Optimisation And Label Regularisation For Energy-Based Neural Dialogue State Tracking Models, Anh Duong Trinh, Robert J. Ross, John D. Kelleher Sep 2020

F-Measure Optimisation And Label Regularisation For Energy-Based Neural Dialogue State Tracking Models, Anh Duong Trinh, Robert J. Ross, John D. Kelleher

Conference papers

In recent years many multi-label classification methods have exploited label dependencies to improve performance of classification tasks in various domains, hence casting the tasks to structured prediction problems. We argue that multi-label predictions do not always satisfy domain constraint restrictions. For example when the dialogue state tracking task in task-oriented dialogue domains is solved with multi-label classification approaches, slot-value constraint rules should be enforced following real conversation scenarios.

To address these issues we propose an energy-based neural model to solve the dialogue state tracking task as a structured prediction problem. Furthermore we propose two improvements over previous methods with respect …

Semantic-Driven Unsupervised Image-To-Image Translation For Distinct Image Domains, Wesley Ackerman Sep 2020

Semantic-Driven Unsupervised Image-To-Image Translation For Distinct Image Domains, Wesley Ackerman

Theses and Dissertations

We expand the scope of image-to-image translation to include more distinct image domains, where the image sets have analogous structures, but may not share object types between them. Semantic-Driven Unsupervised Image-to-Image Translation for Distinct Image Domains (SUNIT) is built to more successfully translate images in this setting, where content from one domain is not found in the other. Our method trains an image translation model by learning encodings for semantic segmentations of images. These segmentations are translated between image domains to learn meaningful mappings between the structures in the two domains. The translated segmentations are then used as the basis …

Intermolecular Dynamics Of Condensed State: Study Of Temperature Effect On Anisotropy Relaxation By Vibration Spectroscopy, Bakhodir Eshchanov, Shavkat Otajonov, Jurat Gayipov, Dilafruz Xudoyberdiyeva, Sarvarbek Qurbanbayev

Bulletin of National University of Uzbekistan: Mathematics and Natural Sciences

As a result of the experimental study of the spectra of anisotropic scattering of light, a character of orientation movement of molecules in aromatic hydrocarbons has been analyzed. The obtained results have been interpreted from the viewpoint of a model of inhibited rotation and the contributions of the rotational and vibrational degrees of freedom to a molecule spectrum have been estimated. With increasing temperature of liquids under study and approaching a critical state, the rotational degrees of freedom "freeze", and the vibrational degrees have become more significant.

Complex Diffusion Monte-Carlo Method: Test By The Simulation Of The 2d Fermions, Bakhodir Abdullaev, Mirzayousuf Musakhanov, Atsushi Nakamura

Bulletin of National University of Uzbekistan: Mathematics and Natural Sciences

On the base of the diffusion Monte-Carlo method we develop the method allowing to simulate the quantum systems with complex wave function. The method is exact and there are no approximations on the simulations of the module and the phase of the system's wave function. In our method averaged value of any quantity have no direct contribution from the phase of distribution function but only from the phase of the Green function of diffusion equation. We test the method by the simulations of the ground state of fermions in two-dimensional parabolic well. Anyons are used for the representation of the …

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations

Observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array revealed intra-hour variations in the radio source PKS B1322-110 (Bignall et al. 2019). As part of an optical follow-up, we obtained Gemini Hα and Hα continuum (HαC) images of the PKS B1322-110 field. A robust 19 σ detection of PKS B1322- 110 in the Hα−HαC image prompted us to obtain the first optical spectrum of PKS B1322-110. With the Gemini spectrum we determine that PKS B1322-110 is a flat-spectrum radio quasar at a redshift of z = 3.007 ± 0.002. The apparent flux detected in the Hα filter is likely to originate from …

A Developer Usability Study Of Tls Libraries, Jonathan Blake Armknecht Sep 2020

A Developer Usability Study Of Tls Libraries, Jonathan Blake Armknecht

Theses and Dissertations

Transport Layer Security (TLS) is a secure communication protocol between a client and a server over a network. The TLS protocol provides the two endpoints with confidentiality through symmetric encryption, endpoint authentication using public-key cryptography, and data integrity using a MAC. However, studies show that security vulnerabilities within TLS connections are often caused by developers misusing TLS library APIs. We measure the usability of four TLS libraries by performing a developer user study. Participants were given code that connects to google.com through HTTP, and tasked with using a TLS library to change the code so that it connects securely to …

A Novel Low-Power Synchronous Preamble Data Line Chip Design For Oscillator Control Interface, Shih-Lun Chen, Tsun-Kuang Chi, Min-Chun Tuan, Chiung-An Chen, Liang-Hung Wang, Wei-Yuan Chiang, Ming-Yi Lin, Patricia Angela R. Abu

Department of Information Systems & Computer Science Faculty Publications

In this paper, a novel low-power synchronous preamble data line protocol chip design for serial communication is proposed. The serial communication only uses two wires, chip select (CS) and secure digital (SD), to transmit and receive data between two devices. The proposed protocol aims to use a fewer number of wires for the interface, therefore reducing the complexity as well as the area of the chip design. Moreover, it increases the efficiency through a synchronous serial communication-controlled oscillator. The low-power synchronous preamble data line protocol design was successfully verified using a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) as a master device and …

Investigation Of Magnetism In Transition Metal Chalcogenide Thin Films, Michael Adventure Hopkins

Dissertations and Theses

Layered two dimensional films have been a topic of interest in the materials science community driven by the intriguing properties demonstrated in graphene. Tunable layer dependent electrical and magnetic properties have been shown in these materials and the ability to grow in the hexagonal phase provides opportunities to grow isostructural stacked heterostructures. In this investigation, cobalt selenide (CoSe) and nickel selenide (NiSe) were grown in the hexagonal phase, which consist of central metal atoms that are natively ferromagnetic in bulk, hence providing the potential for interesting magnetic phases in thin film arrangements as well. These structures may play a role …

Specifications-Based Grading Reduces Anxiety For Students Of Ordinary Differential Equations, Mel Henriksen, Jakob Kotas, Mami Wentworth

CODEE Journal

Specifications-based grading (SBG) is an assessment scheme in which student grades are based on demonstrated understanding of known specifications which are tied to course learning outcomes. Typically with SBG, students are given multiple opportunities to demonstrate such understanding. In undergraduate-level introductory ordinary differential equations courses at two institutions, SBG has been found to markedly decrease students’ self-reported anxiety related to the course as compared to traditionally graded courses.
