Rosenzweig, Equality, And Assignment, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In his seminal book "The Star of Redemption", the renowned philosopher Franz Rosenzweig illustrated his ideas by the intuitive difference between mathematical statements A=B and B=A. Of course, from the purely mathematical viewpoint, these two statements are always equivalent, so to a person trained in mathematics -- even in simple school mathematics -- this illustration is puzzling. What we show is that from the viewpoint of common folks, there is indeed a subtle difference between how people understand these two equalities. To us, the understanding of this difference helped us better understand Rosenzweig's ideas. But we believe that this difference …

Balanced Bee Colony Algorithm Based On Fitness Euclidean-Distance Ratio, Zhang Ming, Tian Na, Zhicheng Ji

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: According to the power exploration and poor exploitation ability of artificial bee colony (ABC), a balanced bee colony (FER-ABC) was proposed. This algorithm modified the search equation based on “fitness Euclidean-distance ratio” and differential algorithm (DE). The FER strategy is useful for multi-optimization and the DE is beneficial to single- optimization. In order to exploit the advantages to full, a new search structure was proposed which balanced the exploitation and exploration. For continuous problems, the simulations on twelve benchmark functions indicate that this FER-ABC algorithm can improve the accuracy effectively and increase the convergence rate apparently. For the discrete …

Behavior Recognition Combining Regional Optical Flow Features And Temporal Templates, Manyi Wang, Yaling Song, Li Yu, Zhang Liang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: A method was proposed to recognize human behavior, which combined the wavelet moments of temporal templates and the speed feature by optical flow. The wavelet moments are not only rotation, translation and scale invariance, but also have the multi-scale characteristics of wavelet. The shape feature of the motion history image and motion energy image can be described. To simple motions, it's effectively, but it can't present the speed information. Regional optical flow was calculated to describe the direction and amplitude features of motion by Lucas-Kanade algorithm. It could make up shortcomings of wavelet moment without speed information. Being …

Precision Measurement Of The Beam-Normal Single-Spin Asymmetry In Forward-Angle Elastic Electron-Proton Scattering, D. Androic, David S. Armstrong, Et Al.

Arts & Sciences Articles

A beam-normal single-spin asymmetry generated in the scattering of transversely polarized electrons from unpolarized nucleons is an observable related to the imaginary part of the two-photon exchange process. We report a 2% precision measurement of the beam-normal single-spin asymmetry in elastic electron-proton scattering with a mean scattering angle of theta_lab = 7.9 degrees and a mean energy of 1.149 GeV. The asymmetry result is B_n = -5.194 +- 0.067 (stat) +- 0.082 (syst) ppm. This is the most precise measurement of this quantity available to date and therefore provides a stringent test of two-photon exchange models at far-forward scattering angles …

Many websites remain non-ADA compliant, containing images which lack accompanying textual descriptions. This leaves sight-impaired individuals unable to fully enjoy the rich wonders of the web. To address this inequity, our research aims to create an autonomous system capable of generating semantically accurate descriptions of images. This problem involves two tasks: recognizing an image and linguistically describing it. Our solution uses state-of-the-art deep learning: employing a convolutional neural network that "learns" to understand images and extracts their salient features, and a recurrent neural network that learns to generate structured, coherent sentences. These two networks are merged to create a single …

Volcano Video Data Characterized And Classified Using Computer Vision And Machine Learning Algorithms, Alex J. C. Witsil, Jeffrey B. Johnson

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Video cameras are common at volcano observatories, but their utility is often limited during periods of crisis due to the large data volume from continuous acquisition and time requirements for manual analysis. For cameras to serve as effective monitoring tools, video frames must be synthesized into relevant time series signals and further analyzed to classify and characterize observable activity. In this study, we use computer vision and machine learning algorithms to identify periods of volcanic activity and quantify plume rise velocities from video observations. Data were collected at Villarrica Volcano, Chile from two visible band cameras located ~17 km from …

Bus Frequency Optimization: When Waiting Time Matters In User Satisfaction, Songsong Mo, Zhifeng Bao, Baihua Zheng, Zhiyong Peng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Reorganizing bus frequency to cater for the actual travel demand can save the cost of the public transport system significantly. Many, if not all, existing studies formulate this as a bus frequency optimization problem which tries to minimize passengers’ average waiting time. However, many investigations have confirmed that the user satisfaction drops faster as the waiting time increases. Consequently, this paper studies the bus frequency optimization problem considering the user satisfaction. Specifically, for the first time to our best knowledge, we study how to schedule the buses such that the total number of passengers who could receive their bus services …

Correlations Between Soil Redness And Soil Properties That Affect Non-Native Annual Plant Distribution In Chaparral And California Sage Scrub, Madeline Blua Sep 2020

Correlations Between Soil Redness And Soil Properties That Affect Non-Native Annual Plant Distribution In Chaparral And California Sage Scrub, Madeline Blua

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Non-native annual plant species have degraded California Sage Scrub and chaparral and present obstacles to shrubland restoration. Red soil patches in chaparral and California Sage Scrub of San Bernardino and Riverside counties appear to support fewer non-native annual plants than non-red soils. The purpose of this study was to confirm differences in vegetation cover between red and non-red soils in shrublands and to use soil analyses to determine possible causes. During vegetation surveys conducted in April of 2018, it was confirmed that red soil sites had lower cover of non-native plants and higher cover of native plant species than the …

Assessing The Potential Equity Outcomes Of Maine’S Climate Action Plan: Framework, Analysis And Recommendations, Senator George J. Mitchell Center For Sustainability Solutions

General University of Maine Publications

The recommendations of these groups have now been completed and the equity assessment that you see before you contains an analysis that was carried out by the University of Maine’s Senator George J. Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions (hereafter, Mitchell Center) to assess the recommendations’ attention to equity issues.

While the impacts of Maine decreasing its greenhouse gas emissions will not be large relative to global emissions, the state’s Climate Action Plan is an important step in the right direction. Maine is not only leading by example, but is also creating policies that will reduce emissions as well as enhance …
