Data Supporting The Paper “Greening The Grey Infrastructure: Green Adsorbent Media For Catch Basin Inserts To Remove Stormwater Pollutants”, Viravid Na Nagara, Dibyendu Sarkar, Kirk Barrett, Rupali Datta

Michigan Tech Research Data

Stormwater pollution is a major cause of water quality impairment. Much of the existing stormwater infrastructures provide little or no treatment, especially for dissolved pollutants. Due to the capital cost of installing new infrastructure, retrofitting existing grey infrastructures is a promising alternative to reduce stormwater pollution. In this study, aluminum-based drinking water treatment residuals (WTR), a byproduct from drinking water treatment was combined with other common supplies (sand and carbon material) and developed as adsorbent media for use in catch basin inserts to remove total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and dissolved Cu, Pb, and Zn from stormwater runoff. Hydraulic and treatment …

Abalone Recruitment In Abalone Recruitment In Low-Density And Aggregated Populations Facing Climatic Stress, Ryan K. Walter Aug 2020

Abalone Recruitment In Abalone Recruitment In Low-Density And Aggregated Populations Facing Climatic Stress, Ryan K. Walter

Physics

Understanding spatial and temporal patterns in the recruitment of marine invertebrates with complex life histories remains a critical knowledge gap in marine ecology and fisheries. As marine invertebrates are facing multiple stressors from overfishing and climatic stress, it is important to evaluate the conditions that facilitate recruitment in low-density populations. The red abalone Haliolis rufescens historically supported an economically important fishery in California, but the fishery was sequentially closed as stocks declined, and the last fished area was closed in 2018 following the collapse of the kelp forests in Northern California. Here, red abalone recruitment was evaluated annually from 2012 …

Evaluation Of Standard And Semantically-Augmented Distance Metrics For Neurology Patients, Daniel B. Hier, Jonathan Kopel, Steven U. Brint, Donald C. Wunsch, Gayla R. Olbricht, Sima Azizi, Blaine Allen Aug 2020

Evaluation Of Standard And Semantically-Augmented Distance Metrics For Neurology Patients, Daniel B. Hier, Jonathan Kopel, Steven U. Brint, Donald C. Wunsch, Gayla R. Olbricht, Sima Azizi, Blaine Allen

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Background: Patient distances can be calculated based on signs and symptoms derived from an ontological hierarchy. There is controversy as to whether patient distance metrics that consider the semantic similarity between concepts can outperform standard patient distance metrics that are agnostic to concept similarity. The choice of distance metric can dominate the performance of classification or clustering algorithms. Our objective was to determine if semantically augmented distance metrics would outperform standard metrics on machine learning tasks.

Methods: We converted the neurological findings from 382 published neurology cases into sets of concepts with corresponding machine-readable codes. We calculated patient distances by …

New Bounds On Augmenting Steps Of Block-Structured Integer Programs, Lin Chen, Martin Koutecký, Lei Xu, Weidong Shi Aug 2020

New Bounds On Augmenting Steps Of Block-Structured Integer Programs, Lin Chen, Martin Koutecký, Lei Xu, Weidong Shi

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Iterative augmentation has recently emerged as an overarching method for solving Integer Programs (IP) in variable dimension, in stark contrast with the volume and flatness techniques of IP in fixed dimension. Here we consider 4-block n-fold integer programs, which are the most general class considered so far. A 4-block n-fold IP has a constraint matrix which consists of n copies of small matrices A, B, and D, and one copy of C, in a specific block structure. Iterative augmentation methods rely on the so-called Graver basis of the constraint matrix, which constitutes a set of fundamental augmenting steps. All existing …

Get The News Out Loudly And Quickly: Modeling The Influence Of The Media On Limiting Infectious Disease, Anna Mummert, Howard Weiss

Mathematics Faculty Research

During outbreaks of infectious diseases with high morbidity and mortality, individuals closely follow media reports of the outbreak. Many will attempt to minimize contacts with other individuals in order to protect themselves from infection and possibly death. This process is called social distancing. Social distancing strategies include restricting socializing and travel, and using barrier protections. We use modeling to show that for short-term outbreaks, social distancing can have a large influence on reducing outbreak morbidity and mortality. In particular, public health agencies working together with the media can significantly reduce the severity of an outbreak by providing timely accounts of …

Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration

Collapse of the roof during mining is a constant threat to the lives of miners and equipment performance. To predict it, different numerical and physical approaches are used. Physical modeling of the massif region from -951 m to -841 m using equivalent materials were undertaken in this investigation. Various options for mining the Vorkuta coal deposit were considered: mining only the upper industrial seam, mining the lower coal seam as a protective layer to the upper one, and assessing the impact on the collapse zone of the complex structure of the upper coal seam roof while maintaining an upward order …

Designing A More Effective Mri Contrast Agent: Investigation Into Various Functionalization Strategies For Targeted Imaging, Lauren Nicole Rust Aug 2020

Designing A More Effective Mri Contrast Agent: Investigation Into Various Functionalization Strategies For Targeted Imaging, Lauren Nicole Rust

Dissertations and Theses

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a medical imaging technique that provides high-resolution images used for diagnostic medicine while maintaining a superior safety profile compared to other radiative techniques. The administration of gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) improves the diagnostic power of MRI and have been used clinically for over three decades. Although GBCAs are effective at improving the contrast in the image, their detection limits are high and require a large dose to generate an observable effect. This high dose is the consequence of the current available designs of clinical GBCAs; their structures are not tuned to generate optimal efficacy. Efficacy …

A Treatise Of Pd-Lgd Correlation Modelling, Wisdom S. Avusuglo Wsa Aug 2020

A Treatise Of Pd-Lgd Correlation Modelling, Wisdom S. Avusuglo Wsa

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The provision in Paragraph 468 of Basel II Framework Document for calculating loss given default (LGD) requires that parameters used in Pillar I of Basel II capital estimations must be reflective of economic downturn conditions so that relevant risks are accounted for. This provision is based on the fact that the probability of default (PD) and LGD correlations are not captured in the proposed formula for estimating economic capital. To help quantify economic downturn LGD, the Basel Committee proposed establishing a functional relationship between long-run and downturn LGD.

To the best of our knowledge, the current proposed models that map …

Factor Structure And Measurement Invariance Of The Maslach Burnout Inventory In Emergency Medicine Residents, Tim P. Moran, Nicole Battaglioli, Simiao Li-Sauerwine

Journal of Wellness

Introduction: Emergency medicine residents suffer from high rates of occupational burnout. Recent research has focused on identifying risk and protective factors for burnout as well as targets for intervention. This research has primarily employed the Maslach Burnout Inventory to evaluate burnout in this population. Factor analytic work has identified three underlying factors measured by the Maslach Burnout Inventory: Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, and Personal Accomplishment. However, this three-factor structure has not been evaluated in emergency medicine residents. Furthermore, its structural equivalence has not been demonstrated across commonly-studied risk factors, such as gender and year of post-graduate training. In the present study, …

Major Papers

The goal of this paper is to analyse the impact of temperature changes on the green golden rule. The green golden rule is the maximization of consumer utility based on consumer preference between consumption and environmental stock. The trade-off between environmental stock and consumption which is found to be negative. With temperature change being very prevalent in our era, we look at temperature change in the form of a damage function. By looking at both an increasing and decreasing damage function, along with changing variables in the green golden rule, we see that when the average global temperature deviates from …

Thermal Stress-Related Spatiotemporal Variations In High-Latitude Coral Reef Benthic Communities, Nicholas P. Jones, Joana Figueiredo, David S. Gilliam

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

High-latitude coral reef communities have been postulated as the first areas to undergo reorganisation under climate change. Tropicalisation has been identified in some high-latitude communities and is predicted in others, but it is unclear how the resident benthic taxa are affected. We conducted a long-term (2007–2016) assessment of changes to benthic community cover in relation to thermal stress duration on the Southeast Florida Reef Tract (SEFRT). Thermal stress events, both hot and cold, had acute (thermal stress duration affected benthic cover that year) and chronic (thermal stress duration affected benthic cover the following year) impacts on benthic cover. Chronic heat …

A Machine‐Learning‐Based Model For Water Quality In Coastal Waters, Taking Dissolved Oxygen And Hypoxia In Chesapeake Bay As An Example, Xin Yu, Jian Shen, Jiabi Du

VIMS Articles

Hypoxia is a big concern in coastal waters as it affects ecosystem health, fishery yield, and marine water resources. Accurately modeling coastal hypoxia is still very challenging even with the most advanced numerical models. A data‐driven model for coastal water quality is proposed in this study and is applied to predict the temporal‐spatial variations of dissolved oxygen (DO) and hypoxic condition in Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the United States with mean summer hypoxic zone extending about 150 km along its main axis. The proposed model has three major components including empirical orthogonal functions analysis, automatic selection of forcing …
