Insights On Dissolved Organic Matter Production Revealed By Removal Of Charge-Transfer Interactions In Senescent Leaf Leachates, Karl M. Meingast, Brice K. Grunert, Sarah A. Green, Evan S. Kane, Nastaran Khademimoshgenani

Michigan Tech Publications

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a critical part of the global carbon cycle. Currently, it is understood that at least a portion of the chromophoric DOM (CDOM) character can be described through an electronic interaction of charge transfer (CT) complexes. While much work has been done to understand the influence of CT on soil and aquatic reference standard DOM, little is known about the influence of CT in fresh terrestrially derived DOM. In this study, leaf litter leachates from three tree species were treated (reduced) with sodium borohydride to determine the contribution of CT on a source of fresh terrestrial …

Airborne Hyperspectral Data Application In Stress Detection Of Blueberry Fields And Ash Trees, Catherine Chan Aug 2020

Airborne Hyperspectral Data Application In Stress Detection Of Blueberry Fields And Ash Trees, Catherine Chan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Water management and irrigation practices are persistent challenges for many agricultural systems. Changing seasonal and weather patterns impose a greater need for understanding crop deficiencies and excesses (e.g. water, sunlight, nutrients) for optimal growth while allocating proper resources for prompt response. The wild blueberry industry is at heightened susceptibility due to its unique growing conditions and uncultivated nature. Early detection of stress in agricultural fields can prompt management responses to mitigate detrimental conditions including drought and disease. Remote sensing has provided timely and reliable information covering large spatial extents, while novel applications in hyperspectral data and imaging spectroscopy have shown …

Simulation Approaches To X-Ray C-Arm-Based Interventions, Daniel R. Allen Aug 2020

Simulation Approaches To X-Ray C-Arm-Based Interventions, Daniel R. Allen

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Mobile C-Arm systems have enabled interventional spine procedures, such as facet joint injections, to be performed minimally-invasively under X-ray or fluoroscopy guidance. The downside to these procedures is the radiation exposure the patient and medical staff are subject to, which can vary greatly depending on the procedure as well as the skill and experience of the team. Standard training methods for these procedures involve the use of a physical C-Arm with real X-rays training on either cadavers or via an apprenticeship-based program. Many guidance systems have been proposed in the literature which aim to reduce the amount of radiation exposure …

Electronic And Local Structures Of Pt-Based Bimetallic Alloy And Core-Shell Systems, Jiatang Chen Aug 2020

Electronic And Local Structures Of Pt-Based Bimetallic Alloy And Core-Shell Systems, Jiatang Chen

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis investigates the electronic structure of Pt for catalysis applications. The importance of the Pt 5d band is discussed in terms of the bonding capability of Pt. The oxygen reduction reaction in proton exchange membrane fuel cells is chosen as the catalytic reaction model to illustrate the effect of Pt 5d states on Pt-O interaction. Pt-based bimetallic systems are introduced as a solution for the high price and limited resources of Pt. Despite lower usage of Pt, the tuning capability to optimize the Pt 5d band in bimetallic catalysts is supposed to provide superior catalytic activity. Advanced synchrotron X-ray …

Discrimination Of Leucine And Isoleucine In De Novo Peptide Sequencing Using Deep Neural Networks, Bingran Shen Aug 2020

Discrimination Of Leucine And Isoleucine In De Novo Peptide Sequencing Using Deep Neural Networks, Bingran Shen

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

De novo peptide sequencing from tandem MS data is a key technology in proteomics for understanding the structure of proteins, especially for first seen sequences. Although this technique has advanced rapidly in recent years and become more effective, one crucial problem remained unsolved. Due to the isomerism of leucine and isoleucine, they are practically indistinguishable in de novo sequencing using traditional tandem MS data. Some experimental attempts have been made to resolve this ambiguity such as EThCD fragmentation process. In this study, we took a data focused approach rather than only looking for characteristic satellite ions produced by the EThCD …

The Bach1/Nrf2 Axis In Brain In Down Syndrome And Transition To Alzheimer Disease-Like Neuropathology And Dementia, Marzia Perluigi, Antonella Tramutola, Sara Pagnotta, Eugenio Barone, D. Allan Butterfield Aug 2020

The Bach1/Nrf2 Axis In Brain In Down Syndrome And Transition To Alzheimer Disease-Like Neuropathology And Dementia, Marzia Perluigi, Antonella Tramutola, Sara Pagnotta, Eugenio Barone, D. Allan Butterfield

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Down syndrome (DS) is the most common genetic cause of intellectual disability that is associated with an increased risk to develop early-onset Alzheimer-like dementia (AD). The brain neuropathological features include alteration of redox homeostasis, mitochondrial deficits, inflammation, accumulation of both amyloid beta-peptide oligomers and senile plaques, as well as aggregated hyperphosphorylated tau protein-containing neurofibrillary tangles, among others. It is worth mentioning that some of the triplicated genes encoded are likely to cause increased oxidative stress (OS) conditions that are also associated with reduced cellular responses. Published studies from our laboratories propose that increased oxidative damage occurs early in life in …

Diagrams Of ⋆-Trisections, José Román Aranda, Jesse Moeller Aug 2020

Diagrams Of ⋆-Trisections, José Román Aranda, Jesse Moeller

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

In this note we provide a generalization for the definition of a trisection of a 4-manifold with boundary. We demonstrate the utility of this more general definition by finding a trisection diagram for the Cacime Surface, and also by finding a trisection-theoretic way to perform logarithmic surgery. In addition, we describe how to perform 1-surgery on closed trisections. The insight gained from this description leads us to the classification of an infinite family of genus three trisections. We include an appendix where we extend two classic results for relative trisections for the case when the trisection surface is closed.

Variations In The Southern Hemisphere Westerlies Over The Last 23,000 Years From Lake Records In The Falkland Islands, Meghan M. Spoth Aug 2020

Variations In The Southern Hemisphere Westerlies Over The Last 23,000 Years From Lake Records In The Falkland Islands, Meghan M. Spoth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Southern Hemisphere Westerlies (SHW) are an important driver of climate in the mid-latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere. Abrupt latitudinal migration of this coupled atmospheric-oceanic system is thought to be linked to the onset of the Termination at the end of the last ice age and to subsequent climatic variation through the late-glacial period and Holocene. However, the timing and spatial extent of these shifts, as well as variations in wind intensity, are poorly constrained, hindering our understanding of abrupt climate change in the Southern Hemisphere. In addition, future changes in the position and intensity of the SHW are a …

A First Look At Forensic Analysis Of Sailfishos, Krassimir Tzvetanov, Umit Karabiyik

Faculty Publications

SailfishOS is a Linux kernel-based embedded device operation system, mostly deployed on cell phones. Currently, there is no sufficient research in this space, and at the same time, this operating system is gaining popularity, so it is likely for investigators to encounter it in the field. This paper focuses on mapping the digital artifacts pertinent to an investigation, which can be found on the filesystem of a phone running SailfishOS 3.2. Currently, there is no other known publicly available research and no commercially available solutions for the acquisition and analysis of this platform. This is a major gap, as the …

Biophysical And Stable Isotopic Profiles Of The Salmon Louse Lepeophtheirus Salmonis (Krøyer, 1837), Emma Taccardi Aug 2020

Biophysical And Stable Isotopic Profiles Of The Salmon Louse Lepeophtheirus Salmonis (Krøyer, 1837), Emma Taccardi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis is a parasitic copepod that infects wild and farmed salmonids throughout the northern hemisphere. L. salmonis represents the largest economic hurdle of the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) industry, with an estimated annual cost of nearly $1 billion globally due to production losses and anti-parasitic control measures. Salmon farming in Maine has existed for decades and is a critical economic driver, yet the region is underrepresented in global sea lice research. The aim of this work was to examine parasites in the context of animal trophic transfer and characterize physiological condition by quantifying the …

Bicknell's Thrush Habitat Use On Commercial Forests In Maine, Usa, Kaitlyn Wilson Aug 2020

Bicknell's Thrush Habitat Use On Commercial Forests In Maine, Usa, Kaitlyn Wilson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Forest reliant species may be significantly impacted by forest management practices. Understanding these impacts, and whether they are positive or negative, requires a species- specific understanding of habitat use. Bicknell’s thrush (Catharus bicknelli) is a range-restricted habitat specialist occurring in balsam fir (Abies balsamea) dominated montane forests that have been recently disturbed and are undergoing successional growth. While research investigating this species’ habitat use has been conducted throughout much of its breeding range, knowledge of Bicknell’s thrush habitat use in Maine is lacking. Greater understanding of habitat use in Maine would improve the ability of forest managers to promote conservation …

Investigations On The Helix-Coil Transition Inside Nanotubes, Dylan Suvlu Aug 2020

Investigations On The Helix-Coil Transition Inside Nanotubes, Dylan Suvlu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Proteins are the workhorses of biology and are essential to life as we know it. A protein’s function in the cell is intimately related to its three-dimensional structure. Thus, understanding structure formation in proteins has been an essential goal in molecular biology. Experiments indicate proteins start acquiring structure inside the ribosome—the cellular manufacturing plant of proteins—and the process is particularly important for membrane proteins. Therefore, the ribosome appears to play an active role in facilitating protein structure acquisition. However, how and when the ribosome accomplishes this task remains poorly understood. To better understand this process, we conducted molecular dynamics computer …
