Study Of Human Circadian Protein (Hrory) And Lipid-Protein Interaction In Giant Virus (Pbcv-1), Laila Noor

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Project 1: Circadian rhythm is a 24-hour cycle that regulates physical and behavioral changes such as sleep-wake patterns in humans, tailoring the daily light and dark changes. Long-term disruption in circadian rhythms can cause sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, insomnia, et al. Limited research has been done on potential drugs to treat against circadian related sleep disorders. Inside the cell at molecular level, the circadian rhythm is regulated by interlocked time-delayed feedback loops, which involve positive and negative transcriptional regulators. Experimental results showed transcriptional factors Retinoic Acid Receptor-Related Orphan Receptors (RORs) improve the stability and functionality of the circadian …

Towards Explaining Neural Networks: Tools For Visualizing Activations And Parameters, Juan Puebla

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

There is a growing number of applications using neural networks for making decisions. However, there is a general lack of understanding of how neural networks work. Neural networks have even been described as black boxes which has led to a lack of trust in artificially intelligent programs. To remedy this, explainable artificial intelligence has risen as a means to validate the decision-making processes and the results of computer programs that use artificial intelligence. The work in this masterâ??s thesis is our contribution to explainable artificial intelligence, focusing on neural networks with the goal of helping users make more sense of …

Random Variable Spaces: Mathematical Properties And An Extension To Programming Computable Functions, Mohammed Kurd-Misto Dec 2023

Random Variable Spaces: Mathematical Properties And An Extension To Programming Computable Functions, Mohammed Kurd-Misto

Computational and Data Sciences (PhD) Dissertations

This dissertation aims to extend the boundaries of Programming Computable Functions (PCF) by introducing a novel collection of categories referred to as Random Variable Spaces. Originating as a generalization of Quasi-Borel Spaces, Random Variable Spaces are rigorously defined as categories where objects are sets paired with a collection of random variables from an underlying measurable space. These spaces offer a theoretical foundation for extending PCF to natively handle stochastic elements.

The dissertation is structured into seven chapters that provide a multi-disciplinary background, from PCF and Measure Theory to Category Theory with special attention to Monads and the Giry Monad. The …

Synthesis Of Bacterial Glycerophospholipids For Biomembrane Model Studies: A Means To Advanced Biofuels, Felix Adulley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To reduce reliance on fossil fuels, sustainable biofuels are being pursued, especially advanced biofuels like 1-butanol that have higher energy content and greater compatibility with existing infrastructure than ethanol. A persistent challenge is the yield-limiting toxicity of biofuels and process solvents, such as tetrahydrofuran, to the microbes that ferment biomass into biofuel. The cell membrane is a focal point of toxicity, and understanding how it interacts with fuels and solvents is key to improving yield. Phospholipid bilayers are the core of biomembranes, and model biomembranes of defined composition provide the ideal platform for biophysical studies. To this end, glycerophospholipids characteristic …

Early Pliocene Mice And Rats From The Gray Fossil Site Of Eastern Tennessee: Implications For The Evolution Of Cricetidae And Understanding Of The Past Ecosystem, Ziqi Xu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cricetidae ranks as the second-most species-rich and abundant mammalian family, with limited studies on eastern North American records prior to the Pleistocene. While cricetids has been previously noted at the early Pliocene Gray Fossil Site (GFS), this study provides a detailed description of eight taxa: Postcopemys (two species), Symmetrodontomys, Oryzomyini, Peromyscus, Neotoma, Neotomodon, and Xenomys. Postcopemys is the most common cricetid taxon at GFS, followed by Peromyscus and Neotoma. These records expand the stratigraphic and geographic range of multiple genera. Distinctive morphological features of GFS taxa suggest presence of several new species. The …

Convolution And Autoencoders Applied To Nonlinear Differential Equations, Noah Borquaye Dec 2023

Convolution And Autoencoders Applied To Nonlinear Differential Equations, Noah Borquaye

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Autoencoders, a type of artificial neural network, have gained recognition by researchers in various fields, especially machine learning due to their vast applications in data representations from inputs. Recently researchers have explored the possibility to extend the application of autoencoders to solve nonlinear differential equations. Algorithms and methods employed in an autoencoder framework include sparse identification of nonlinear dynamics (SINDy), dynamic mode decomposition (DMD), Koopman operator theory and singular value decomposition (SVD). These approaches use matrix multiplication to represent linear transformation. However, machine learning algorithms often use convolution to represent linear transformations. In our work, we modify these approaches to …

Bingroup2: Statistical Tools For Infection Identification Via Group Testing, Christopher R. Bilder, Brianna D. Hitt, Brad J. Biggerstaff, Joshua M. Tebbs, Christopher S. Mcmahan Dec 2023

Bingroup2: Statistical Tools For Infection Identification Via Group Testing, Christopher R. Bilder, Brianna D. Hitt, Brad J. Biggerstaff, Joshua M. Tebbs, Christopher S. Mcmahan

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

Group testing is the process of testing items as an amalgamation, rather than separately, to determine the binary status for each item. Its use was especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic through testing specimens for SARS-CoV-2. The adoption of group testing for this and many other applications is because members of a negative testing group can be declared negative with potentially only one test. This subsequently leads to significant increases in laboratory testing capacity. Whenever a group testing algorithm is put into practice, it is critical for laboratories to understand the algorithm’s operating characteristics, such as the expected number of …

Interactive Water Vortex Exhibit, Simon Way, Emily Laing, Roqaya Naseri, Makenzie Kan

Mechanical Engineering

The San Luis Obispo Children’s Museum requested an interactive water vortex exhibit to both engage and entertain inquisitive guests, ages two to eight. The goal was to design and manufacture an exhibit that would educate its users on the fluid mechanics behind water vortices. They activate the mechanics by spinning a wheel, which is perceived as the catalyst to manipulate the flow of water to successfully create a whirlpool. Our team has created an interactive display that will enlighten young minds, providing the museum with an educational exhibit which shares a concept not currently taught by any other. Our project …

Designing Large-Scale Intelligent Collaborative Platform For Freight Forwarders, Pang Jin Tan, Shih-Fen Cheng, Richard Chen Dec 2023

Designing Large-Scale Intelligent Collaborative Platform For Freight Forwarders, Pang Jin Tan, Shih-Fen Cheng, Richard Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we propose to design a large-scale intelligent collaborative platform for freight forwarders. This platform is based on a mathematical programming formulation and an efficient solution approach. Forwarders are middlemen who procure container capacities from carriers and sell them to shippers to serve their transport requests. However, due to demand uncertainty, they often either over-procure or under-procure capacities. We address this with our proposed platform where forwarders can collaborate and share capacities, allowing one's transport requests to be potentially shipped on another forwarder's container. The result is lower total costs for all participating forwarders. The collaboration can be …

Parameter Estimation For Patient Enrollment In Clinical Trials, Junyan Liu Dec 2023

Parameter Estimation For Patient Enrollment In Clinical Trials, Junyan Liu

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In this paper, we study the Poisson-gamma model for recruitment time in clinical trials. We proved several properties of this model that match our intuitions from a reliability perspective, did simulations on this model, and used different optimization methods to estimate the parameters. Although the behaviors of the optimization methods were unfavorable and unstable, we identified certain conditions and provided potential explanations for this phenomenon and further insights into the Poisson-gamma model.

(R2055) Magnetic Effects On Unsteady Non-Newtonian Blood Flow Through A Tapered And Overlapping Stenotic Artery, Abiodun J. Babatunde, Moses S. Dada

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This study aims to investigating the effect of magnetic field and porosity on non-Newtonian flow of blood through a tapered, and overlapping stenosed artery. The Casson fluid model represents the rheological character of blood. A tapered and overlapping stenosed artery influences the hemodynamic behavior of the blood flow. The problem is solved by using analytical techniques with the help of boundary conditions, and results are displayed graphically for different flow characteristics like pressure drop, shear stress, velocity profile and stream function. It is realized that rises in Darcy number and Womersley number accelerates the velocity profile and reduces the radial …

(R2058) Mhd Stagnation Point Flow Of Nanofluid With Buoyancy Effect Through A Porous Shrinking Sheet, Timothy L. Oyekunle, Mojeed T. Akolade, Samson A. Agunbiade, Paul O. Adeniran Dec 2023

(R2058) Mhd Stagnation Point Flow Of Nanofluid With Buoyancy Effect Through A Porous Shrinking Sheet, Timothy L. Oyekunle, Mojeed T. Akolade, Samson A. Agunbiade, Paul O. Adeniran

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The current investigation seeks to identify the response of buoyancy and heat source mechanisms on chemically reacting and magnetized nanofluid. The stagnation point flows through the shrinking porous surface assumed as an air-based fluid conveying nanoparticles under Buongiorno’s model. This article contributes to the existing literature with the introduction of nonlinear convection of the nanofluid, triggered by the heat source, which accelerates the temperature of the fluid particles, thus resulting in airflow upstream. Subject to these conditions, the mathematical model is presented in PDE systems. An approach of similarity variable is employed to arrive at the ODE systems, which is …

(R2059) Modeling The Spread Of Coronavirus With Self-Protection And Quarantine Effect, Dileep Sharma, Agraj Tripathi, Ram Naresh Tripathi

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

A nonlinear mathematical model to study the effect of transmission dynamics of COVID-19 virus in a population with variable size structure is proposed and analyzed. The model divides the total human population into five subclasses: susceptibles, self-protected susceptibles, infectives, quarantined infectives, and recovered population including a class representing cumulative density of coronavirus in the environmental reservoir. The model exhibits two equilibria, namely, the diseasefree and the endemic equilibrium. Model analysis reveals the global dynamics of the spread of COVID-19 is completely determined by the basic reproduction number. If basic reproduction number is greater than one, the endemic equilibrium is locally …

(R2064) Analytical Approximations In Short Times Of Exact Operational Solutions To Reaction-Diffusion Problems On Bounded Intervals, Kwassi Anani

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This paper aims to provide an exact solution in the Laplace domain and related analytic approximations in short time limits for the class of boundary value problems of the one-dimensional linear parabolic equation with constant coefficients. The problem’s most general form involves a parameterized equation on a bounded interval, with unified specification of the three classical types of boundary conditions: Dirichlet, Neumann, and Robin. Under certain integrability assumptions, we have proven that a unique solution exists in the Laplace domain. This operational solution can be obtained in a closed form by using classical integral transforms. Four distinct cases have been …

Multitasking Scheduling With Shared Processing, Bin Fu, Yumei Huo, Hairong Zhao Dec 2023

Multitasking Scheduling With Shared Processing, Bin Fu, Yumei Huo, Hairong Zhao

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Recently, the problem of multitasking scheduling has raised a lot of interest in the service industries. Hall et al. (Discrete Applied Mathematics, 2016) proposed a shared processing multitasking scheduling model which allows a team to continue to work on the primary tasks while processing the routinely scheduled activities as they occur. With a team being modeled as a single machine, the processing sharing of the machine is achieved by allocating a fraction of the processing capacity to routine jobs and the remaining fraction, which we denote as sharing ratio, to the primary jobs. In this paper, we generalize this model …

Advanced Caching And Streaming For Large Scale Point Cloud Data Visualization On The Web, Pravin Poudel Dec 2023

Advanced Caching And Streaming For Large Scale Point Cloud Data Visualization On The Web, Pravin Poudel

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Point clouds are widely used in various applications such as 3D modeling, geospatial analysis, robotics, and more. One of the key advantages of 3D point cloud data is that, unlike other data formats like texture, it is independent of viewing angle, surface type, and parameterization. Since each point in the point cloud is independent of the other, it makes it the most suitable source of data for tasks like object recognition, scene segmentation, and reconstruction. Point clouds are complex and verbose due to the numerous attributes they contain, many of which may not be always necessary for rendering, making retrieving …

Constraining Silicate Weathering During The Middle Eocene Climatic Optimum (Meco) Using Radiolarian Ge/Si, Olivia R. Laub

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Silicate weathering has long been considered a fundamental component of the earth system and has been cited as one of, if not the primary stabilizing feedback for climate. However, recent work has shown that the role of silicate weathering in the climate system is more complicated and dynamic than previously assumed. In this study I examine the role of weathering in the enigmatic warming event, the Middle Eocene Climatic Optimum (MECO) that occurred approximately 40 Ma. This event works as a good case study as there are multiple features of the MECO that differentiate it from other warming events that …

Deep Learning With Effective Hierarchical Attention Mechanisms In Perception Of Autonomous Vehicles, Qiuxiao Chen Dec 2023

Deep Learning With Effective Hierarchical Attention Mechanisms In Perception Of Autonomous Vehicles, Qiuxiao Chen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Autonomous vehicles need to gather and understand information from their surroundings to drive safely. Just like how we look around and understand what's happening on the road, these vehicles need to see and make sense of dynamic objects like other cars, pedestrians, and cyclists, and static objects like crosswalks, road barriers, and stop lines.

In this dissertation, we aim to figure out better ways for computers to understand their surroundings in the 3D object detection task and map segmentation task. The 3D object detection task automatically spots objects in 3D (like cars or cyclists) and the map segmentation task automatically …

Optimal Stopping Of Multi-Robot Exploration For Unknown, Bounded Environments, Trey D. Crowther Dec 2023

Optimal Stopping Of Multi-Robot Exploration For Unknown, Bounded Environments, Trey D. Crowther

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Limited resources and uncertainty pose a substantial problem for multi-robot exploration of unknown environments. This research paper looks to determine the optimal time to terminate robot exploration while maximizing information gathered. Whilst making this determination, the system's resources and capabilities must be taken into account. To see if our strategy works, we ran many simulations in varying environments. The results of this research are important for real-world uses like robot exploration, search and rescue missions, and automated surveillance. Determining when to stop exploring can help the system save resources, explore faster, and make better decisions.

Movement Patterns Of A Federally Endangered Minnow In A Fragmented Desert River, Martinique J. Chavez Dec 2023

Movement Patterns Of A Federally Endangered Minnow In A Fragmented Desert River, Martinique J. Chavez

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Fishes are unified in their need to move within the systems they occupy, and their movement patterns can be fundamental to their ecology and survival. Many large rivers in North America are fragmented by dams that modify natural flow regimes, compromise connectivity, and imperil freshwater fishes dependent on unrestricted movement in order to complete their life history. Coincident with widespread river fragmentation, are the declines of numerous endemic desert fishes in the American southwest. The Rio Grande Silvery Minnow (Hybognathus amarus, RGSM), has experienced a 95% reduction in its historical range and is now restricted to a highly …
