Quantifying The Role Of Water Quality On Nitrogen Cycling In A Trophic Estuary, Kayla Gonzalez-Boy Nov 2023

Quantifying The Role Of Water Quality On Nitrogen Cycling In A Trophic Estuary, Kayla Gonzalez-Boy

Symposium of Student Scholars

Jobos Bay Estuary is an intertidal, tropical estuary located in southern Puerto Rico. The estuary covers about 12 km2 and has a variety of habitats, such as seagrass beds, mangroves, mud flats, and coral reefs, which play important roles in sediment trapping and water quality maintenance. Seagrasses also serve as nursery and feeding grounds and provide shelter for macrofauna. Currently, the role of seagrasses and water quality on nitrogen (N) cycling in trophic estuaries is not well constrained. Understanding variations in sediment-based effects on N cycling rates and transformations, and how they are associated with water quality, is an …

Sustainable Energy Distribution Methods At The Azraq And Za’Atari Refugee Camps In Jordan: A Refugee Perspective, Lucie Lagodich Nov 2023

Sustainable Energy Distribution Methods At The Azraq And Za’Atari Refugee Camps In Jordan: A Refugee Perspective, Lucie Lagodich

Capstone Collection

The looming climate change crisis requires research and development of mitigation strategies to protect those most vulnerable. This study uses semi-structured interviews to capture the refugee perspective of the successes and shortcomings of large-scale solar farm projects installed at the Azraq and Za’atari Syrian refugee camps in the west and north of Jordan, respectively. These perspectives may be utilized to improve each camp's current renewable energy distribution system. Results suggest that at both camps the current renewable energy systems are deeply flawed with limited hours with rampant distrust among camp residents in the management of the solar farms. Most refugees …

Jumping Frogs On Cyclic Graphs, Jake Mitchell Nov 2023

Jumping Frogs On Cyclic Graphs, Jake Mitchell

Honors College Theses

From the traditional game of Solitaire to modern video games like Candy Crush and Five Nights at Freddy’s, single-player games have captivated audiences for gener- ations. We investigate a lesser-known single-player game, the Jumping Frogs problem, on various classes of simple graphs, a graph with no multiple edges or looped ver- tices. We determine whether frogs can be stacked together on one vertex of a given graph. In a graph with k vertices and one frog on each vertex, the frogs must make legal jumps to form a stack of k frogs. The problem is known to be solvable on …

User Feedback On Celebratory Technology Model For Reducing Stigma, Evelyn Lawrie, Daniel Dinh, Sav Avalos, Jack De Bruyn, Spencer Au, Christian Lopez, Ray Tan, Cyrus Fa'amafoe

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Social stigma is a complex manifestation that affects humanity, particularly individuals with disabilities and other marginalized groups, including those with physical, cognitive, and emotional conditions. Society often judges these individuals' interactions with the world, and many technologies designed to assist those with disabilities attempt to change their daily interactions and behaviors. Nonetheless, when the emphasis is placed on validating disabled identities, there is a potential for it to be seen as "inspiration porn." This approach might inadvertently reduce inclusivity and do little to challenge negative stereotypes; it can also lead to the objectification of individuals with disabilities. Therefore, this project …

How Self-Esteem Affects Eye Fixation When Viewing Images Of Strangers Compared To Images Of Self, Karly Kammann, Andrew Wachtel, Maddie Rowe, Ashley Richmond Nov 2023

How Self-Esteem Affects Eye Fixation When Viewing Images Of Strangers Compared To Images Of Self, Karly Kammann, Andrew Wachtel, Maddie Rowe, Ashley Richmond

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Self-esteem has been shown to play a role in overall health. A previous study explained that humans are self-motivated to protect and enhance self-esteem and when self-esteem is enhanced, psychological wellbeing shows improvements. With that, another study evaluated depression and facial fixation and found that those who had depression looked at the mouth region more so than the eye region. By keeping prior research in mind, we aimed to evaluate how self-esteem plays a role in how one views themselves compared to a stranger. Thus, we hypothesized that those who exhibit lower self-esteem will demonstrate fixations on the mouth more …

Stability, Longevity, And Regulatory Bionetworks, Christian N. K. Anderson Nov 2023

Stability, Longevity, And Regulatory Bionetworks, Christian N. K. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Genome-wide studies of diseases and chronic conditions frequently fail to uncover marked or consistent differences in RNA or protein concentrations. However, the developing field of kinetic proteomics has made promising discoveries in differences in the turnover rate of these same proteins, even when concentrations were not necessarily different. The situation can theoretically be modeled mathematically using bifurcation equations, but uncovering the proper form of these is difficult. To this end, we developed TWIG, a method for characterizing bifurcations that leverages information geometry to identify drivers of complex systems. Using this, we characterized the bifurcation and stability properties of all 132 …

Faculty Publications

This research addresses the data overload faced by intelligence searchers in government and defense agencies. The study leverages methods from the Cognitive Systems Engineering (CSE) literature to generate insights into the intelligence search work domain. These insights are applied to a supporting concept and requirements for designing and evaluating a human-AI agent team specifically for intelligence search tasks. Domain analysis reveals the dynamic nature of the ‘value structure’, a term that describes the evolving set of criteria governing the intelligence search process. Additionally, domain insight provides details for search aggregation and conceptual spaces from which the value structure could be …

Vrmovian - An Immersive Data Annotation Tool For Visual Analysis Of Human Interactions In Vr, Isaac Browen

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Understanding human behavior in virtual reality (VR) is a key component for developing intelligent systems to enhance human focused VR experiences. The ability to annotate human motion data proves to be a very useful way to analyze and understand human behavior. However, due to the complexity and multi-dimensionality of human activity data, it is necessary to develop software that can display the data in a comprehensible way and can support intuitive data annotation for developing machine learning models able recognize and assist human motions in VR (e.g., remote physical therapy). Although past research has been done to improve VR data …

Repeated Games In The Presence Of Incomplete Information, Reza Habibi Nov 2023

Repeated Games In The Presence Of Incomplete Information, Reza Habibi

The Journal of Economics and Politics

There are many strategic situations at which a game theoretical framework should be used to analyze the equilibrium decisions at which the incomplete information annoy the process of deriving the certain rules for making decisions. In these cases, players use signals of each other's to get proper decisions. For example, in economic environment, some macro-economic latent variables induce incomplete information. Morris and Shin (2000) referred this type of game as global game and studied one-shot type of it. However, in practical situations, it is a type of repeated game. In the current paper, following notations of Morris and Shin (2000), …

MP concentrations in the different samples were determined using an average optical microscopy count. Comparison of the water column MP concentrations during …

1324-Avoiding (0,1)-Matrices, Megan Bennett Nov 2023

1324-Avoiding (0,1)-Matrices, Megan Bennett

Mathematics Colloquium Series

A 1324-avoiding (0,1)-matrix is an 𝑚×𝑛 matrix that does not contain the 1324-pattern. Our goal is to find the maximum number of 1’s that an 𝑚 × 𝑛 1324-avoiding (0,1)-matrix can contain. We build upon Brualdi and Cao’s recent work, where they characterized the 𝑚 × 𝑛 1234-avoiding matrices with the maximum number of 1’s. They found that these matrices can contain up to 3(𝑚 + 𝑛 − 3) 1’s. We originally conjectured that 1324-avoiding matrices must contain at most the same number of 1’s, as is the case with the six patterns formed by permutations of {1,2,3}. However, we …

The Negative Stigma Surrounding Mathematics, Marissa A. Greisen Nov 2023

The Negative Stigma Surrounding Mathematics, Marissa A. Greisen

PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal

There is a negative stigma that surrounds mathematics in our education system. It is important to bring notice to this for the benefit of future students. There is a lot of research claiming that math is looked down on, but they do not answer why, or what we can do to fix it. Why is there a greater negative stigma around math and not other subjects? What roles to teachers, parents, and peers play in this stigma? In this article, I created a survey for people to answer questions regarding their opinion on math, who they believe typically does well …
