Semantic frames are formal structures describing situations, actions or events, e.g., Commerce buy, Kidnapping, or Exchange. Each frame provides a set of frame elements or semantic roles corresponding to participants of the situation and lexical units (LUs)—words and phrases that can evoke this particular frame in texts. For example, for the frame Kidnapping, two key roles are Perpetrator and the Victim, and this frame can be evoked with lexical units abduct, kidnap, or snatcher. While formally sound, the scarce availability of semantic frame resources and their limited lexical coverage hinders the wider adoption of frame semantics across languages and domains. …

A Model For The Multi-Virus Contact Process, Xu Huang Oct 2023

A Model For The Multi-Virus Contact Process, Xu Huang

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

We study one specific version of the contact process on a graph. Here, we allow multiple infections carried by the nodes and include a probability of removing nodes in a graph. The removal probability is purely determined by the number of infections the node carries at the moment when it gets another infection. In this paper, we show that on any finite graph, any positive value of infection rate $\lambda$ will result in the death of the process almost surely. In the case of $d$-regular infinite trees, We also give a lower bound on the infection rate in order for …

Leaching Performance Of Nanotechnology-Induced High-Arsenic-Bearing Tooeleite-Like Mineral Nanowaste, Arindam Malakar, Sanjit Das, Samirul Islam, Rajneesh Singh, Sugata Ray

Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications

For arsenic decontamination from groundwater, arsenic crystallization is becoming adopted due to its sustainability and economic benefits. However, arsenic crystallization technology is a two-step process, which makes it complex and generates hazardous waste. Successful efforts toward making it a single-step process are presented here. The addition of nanorods and ball-milled zinc sulfide nanoparticles to arsenic-contaminated water result in highly monodispersed and higharsenic- containing mineralized nanowaste with a crystalline structure similar to the mineral Tooeleite ((Fe3+6(As3+O3)4SO4(OH)4•4H2O)). This study reports the results of a short-term stability test …

The Effects Of Biosolid Microplastics On The Microbial Community And Root Functioning In The Rhizosphere Of Soybean Crops In Agricultural Soil, Rebecca Chloe Lebel Oct 2023

The Effects Of Biosolid Microplastics On The Microbial Community And Root Functioning In The Rhizosphere Of Soybean Crops In Agricultural Soil, Rebecca Chloe Lebel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Biosolids are semi-solid by-products from wastewater treatment plants where contaminants such as microplastics can accumulate, and transfer into the root zone causing ecotoxic effects to the rhizosphere microbial community. Furthermore, microplastics can alter soil properties which have a strong control on the size and diversity of the rhizosphere microbial community and its ability to consume root-borne carbon compounds. Using the MicroRESP system the respiration of the rhizosphere microbial community of soybeans subjected to microplastic biosolid mimics of two types (PET sheets and PPT beads) and two concentrations (2,000 vs 15,000 particles/kg dry soil) was quantified. Baseline respiration rates from extracted …

Yet Another Model For Arabic Dialect Identification, Ajinkya Kulkarni, Hanan Al Darmaki

Natural Language Processing Faculty Publications

In this paper, we describe a spoken Arabic dialect identification (ADI) model for Arabic that consistently outperforms previously published results on two benchmark datasets: ADI-5 and ADI-17. We explore two architectural variations: ResNet and ECAPA-TDNN, coupled with two types of acoustic features: MFCCs and features exratected from the pre-trained self-supervised model UniSpeech-SAT Large, as well as a fusion of all four variants. We find that individually, ECAPA-TDNN network outperforms ResNet, and models with UniSpeech-SAT features outperform models with MFCCs by a large margin. Furthermore, a fusion of all four variants consistently outperforms individual models. Our best models outperform previously reported …

In their commentary, Xiao et al. cautioned that the conclusions on the critical role of microbial carbon use efficiency (CUE) in global soil organic carbon (SOC) storage in a paper by Tao et al. (2023) might be too simplistic. They claimed that Tao et al.’s study lacked mechanistic consideration of SOC formation and excluded important datasets. Xiao et al. brought up important points, which can be largely reconciled with our findings by understanding the differences in expressing processes in empirical studies and in models.

School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Wild fisheries provide billions of people with a key source of multiple essential nutrients. As fisheries plateau or decline, nourishing more people will partially rely on shifting consumption to farmed animals. The environmental implications of transitions among animal-sourced foods have been scrutinized, but their nutritional substitutability remains unclear. We compared concentrations of six essential dietary nutrients across >5000 species of wild fishes, aquaculture, poultry and livestock species, representing >65% of animals consumed globally. Wild fishes are both more nutrient-dense and variable than farmed animals; achieving recommended intake of all nutrients with farmed species could require consuming almost four times more …

Extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1 and 2 (ERK1/2) are dysregulated in many pervasive diseases. Recently, we discovered that ERK1/2 is oxidized by signal-generated hydrogen peroxide in various cell types. Since the putative sites of oxidation lie within or near ERK1/2’s ligand-binding surfaces, we investigated how oxidation of ERK2 regulates interactions with the model substrates Sub-D and Sub-F. These studies revealed that ERK2 undergoes sulfenylation at C159 on its D-recruitment site surface and that this modification modulates ERK2 activity differentially between substrates. Integrated biochemical, computational, and mutational analyses suggest a plausible mechanism for peroxide-dependent changes in ERK2-substrate interactions. Interestingly, oxidation decreased ERK2’s …

Determining The Ideal Concentrations Of Ethanol And Propylene Glycol In Ethosomes For Transdermal Delivery Of Vitamin D3, Rebecca Conner

Harrisburg University Research Symposium: Highlighting Research, Innovation, & Creativity

Vitamin D3 is an important chemical in the human body, however, many Americans have low levels of this vitamin. There are plenty of oral supplementations for Vitamin D3 deficiency, but those of older age and busy schedules may struggle to meet the minimum requirement. A recently developed ethosomal transmembrane delivery system (Touitou, 2000), similar to liposomes but also containing ethanol, allows users to apply a gel dermally and have the desired drug or active ingredient reach the bloodstream faster. However, there is considerable variation in the concentration of ethanol and permeation enhancers used. Using an affordable method to …

The Relationship Between Pets Owned And Gender Amongst College Students, Eman Asghar, Bryce Camuso, Josh Feirick

Harrisburg University Research Symposium: Highlighting Research, Innovation, & Creativity

There is a gap between the number of men and women that own dogs. The Mintel Press Team states that "71% of men aged 18-44 own a dog compared to 60% of their female counterparts" (Mintel Press Team, 2016, para: 1). While this statistic includes people who are college-aged, it does not mention college students specifically. Thus, research into the relationship between pets owned and gender amongst college students is an important topic that warrants looking into.

Is Math Real? How Simple Questions Lead Us To Mathematics' Deepest Truths, Eugenia Cheng Oct 2023

Is Math Real? How Simple Questions Lead Us To Mathematics' Deepest Truths, Eugenia Cheng

Dalrymple Lecture Series

Where does math come from: from rules in a textbook? From logic and deduction? Not quite. In this talk Eugenia Cheng will argue that math comes from human curiosity - most importantly, from asking questions. Many people are discouraged from asking these questions in school, thinking they’re too simple to be taken seriously, or being told that their questions are stupid. But often, these simple-sounding questions lead to wondrous mathematical revelations. Dr Cheng will take us on a journey of discovery starting with questions like "Why does 2x3 = 3x2?" and "What's the point of maths?", leading us into research-level …
