The Value Of Carbon Sequestration In The Developing World: Making The Economic Case For Tree Planting In Laos, Vongdalone Vongsikeo Jan 2020

The Value Of Carbon Sequestration In The Developing World: Making The Economic Case For Tree Planting In Laos, Vongdalone Vongsikeo

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Tree plantations in developing countries are mostly driven by private sectors, mainly to increase forest cover and meet the timber demand. However, research studies on tree plantations in Laos, for instance, show that despite high profitability tree farmers and private companies face many challenges such as low timber quality, low timber selling price and slow plantation expansion. These challenges could be the result of slow policy improvement processes or the lack of basis on the justification of government intervention. This study uses a policy decision tool - a cost-benefit analysis to evaluate social costs and social benefits from private tree …

Gender Differences In Management: Employee Preference Between Male And Female Managers, Aimee Fernandez

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

Conflict in the workplace is not a new phenomenon and much research has been dedicated to understanding the causes and consequences of it. Gender plays a significant role in workplace conflict and as it relates to gender equality in the workplace, there have been significant advances in training and education; however, gender discrimination persists. This dissertation deals with differences of gender in management and shows that gender bias continues to exist not only in the workplace but specifically, at the managerial level. The Impact Of Globalization As An Economic Theory On The Mass Migration Of Vulnerable Populations, Amalia Luxardo Jan 2020

The Impact Of Globalization As An Economic Theory On The Mass Migration Of Vulnerable Populations, Amalia Luxardo

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

As the world becomes increasingly globalized, the question of economy, of who hinders it or allows it to blossom, has become a point of contention that has led to many acts of violence. This research utilizes globalization as an economic theory as the underlying factor that causes these violent conflicts and imminent mass movements of migration. In using this lens, I emphasize that economically fueled violent conflict leads to the migration of populations and their ultimate elimination. Thus, the purpose of this study is to investigate and draw data from major violent conflicts in different nation-states and perform a quantitative …

The Scramble For Texas: European Diplomacy And Imperial Contest In The Republic Of Texas, 1835-1846, Penelope Lea Jacobus Jan 2020

The Scramble For Texas: European Diplomacy And Imperial Contest In The Republic Of Texas, 1835-1846, Penelope Lea Jacobus

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The story that this Dissertation analyses is the attempted European penetration of the North American borderlands during the independence of the Texas Republic. It will analyse how the independence of Texas ties into new forms of imperialism exercised by Europeans and U.S.-Americans during the first half of the nineteenth century, a time when shifting ideas about freedom and coercion, international law and rights, civilisation, nationhood, and trade redefined imperial possibilities. Imperialism in the nineteenth century had to be increasingly compatible with ideas of freedom and justice, such as free trade, free labour and the use of fair legal tenets in …

Hong Kong Identity At The Crossroads Of Localism And Global Finance Capital, Micky Lee Jan 2020

Hong Kong Identity At The Crossroads Of Localism And Global Finance Capital, Micky Lee

College of Arts & Sciences Faculty Works

Hong Kong protestors fight for a local citizen identity that is anchored in physical places and limited by time. They adopted symbols that draw on public memory and vandalized those of mainland Chinese hegemony. However, these local symbols are embedded with, layered over, and enabled by global capitalism fueled by Chinese finance capital. The sense of urgency and immediacy felt by protestors also reinforce the anticipated short-term market returns of Chinese hi-tech companies listed in the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Finding justice for Hong Kong protestors requires an examination of finance capital that flows through global cities.

Emotional Intelligence And Psychopathic Personality Traits: Examination Of Adult Male Sex Offenders In New Jersey, Kelly Rose White

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Sexual assault and abuse have a significant impact on victims and society. Although there has been a plethora of research studies examining the criminogenic aspects of sexual offending, sparse literature exists on the emotional aspects of sexual offending. Prior research established that sex offenders hold deficits in their emotional functioning that could be a result of psychopathic personality traits. This research study sought to expand the literature on sex offenders and investigate if adult male sex offenders in New Jersey differ in emotional intelligence and psychopathic personality traits depending on victim typology. This study was grounded in coercion and integrated …

The Relationship Between Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy And Client-Therapist Attachment On Symptom Reduction, Kelly Tobin Jan 2020

The Relationship Between Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy And Client-Therapist Attachment On Symptom Reduction, Kelly Tobin

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

For centuries, scholars and individuals have recognized the psychophysiological impact of the horse-human connection. The felt impact helped launch the creation of equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP), an alternative form of treatment for individuals who struggle to connect to traditional forms of therapy. The limited amount of research on the objective benefit of EAP as an alternative to traditional psychotherapy has limited the number of individuals who are referred for such treatment. Grounded in Bowlby's theory of attachment, the purpose of this quantitative quasi-experimental study was to determine if attachment to a therapist differs between the method of treatment, traditional psychotherapy or …

Social Connectedness And Financial Independence Strategies Supporting Nonprofit Sustainability, Christopher Edmund Maylor

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Leaders of nonprofit organizations (NPOs) often lack strategies to ensure the sustainability of their organizations beyond initial funding, resulting in significant risk to program continuity. Grounded in social entrepreneurship theory, the purpose of this qualitative single-case study was to explore strategies used by 3 leaders of a small NPO in the southwest region of the United States. Data were collected from semistructured interviews and a review of organizational documents. Through thematic analysis, 6 social themes emerged: optimization of business strategies, income and donor growth, program cost management, funding diversification, program licensing, and public awareness of NPO programs. An Exploration Of The Criminal Thinking Processes In Criminal Offenders, Mark V. Lemieux Jan 2020

An Exploration Of The Criminal Thinking Processes In Criminal Offenders, Mark V. Lemieux

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This study sought to learn about Criminal Thinking patterns of thought in former criminal offenders. The discovery of this information is important to several fields in the formulation of treatment programs toward the elimination of criminal behavior. This research is based on the theory formulated by Yochelson and Samenow, and expanded on by Walters, that holds that Criminal Thinking patterns develop along a continuum and can lead to criminal behavior in some. Specifically, this study sought to learn whether criminal offenders were aware of their Criminal Thinking patterns and if that awareness impacted their criminal behavior. This qualitative phenomenological study …

Perceived Neighborhood: Preferences Versus Actualities, Saeed Moradi, Ali Nejat, Da Hu, Souparno Ghosh Jan 2020

Perceived Neighborhood: Preferences Versus Actualities, Saeed Moradi, Ali Nejat, Da Hu, Souparno Ghosh

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

Housing recovery plays a key role in the overall restoration of a community. A multitude of factors affect housing recovery, many of which are associated with interactions of residents with their perceived neighborhoods. Targeting perceived neighborhoods rather than administratively defined measures of land helps with devising recovery plans that could better address social preferences of the residents. However, such measures are commonly subject to collection of information via expensive and time-consuming surveys. The current research aims to contribute to the domain by exploring the relationship between perception of households of their neighborhood anchors (perceived anchors) and the anchors that exist …

How Vending Machines Can Conquer Access To Better Quality Convenience Food, Tessa C. Greenhalgh

Senior Projects Spring 2020

As the food system has evolved it has been forced to include convenience. Changing life styles and big food companies have dictated a switch in expectations from our food. They have made it so that time and energy can be saved when it comes to producing, cooking or eating food. Technology has evolved beside convenience food, to sell or manufacture it and make it more convenient. One of these invention is vending machines. Automated food vending began with the Automat, which served fresh and healthy dishes but has come to dispense food that is mostly considered unhealthy. Vending machines are …

The Intersection Of Socioeconomic Segregation, The Black Voter, And Redistricting Within Tallahassee, Florida, Tsion Kiros

Senior Projects Spring 2020

This thesis explores answering the question of why Tallahassee is considered one of the most economically/racially segregated cities within America. This thesis also wants to create the argument on why and how socioeconomic segregation, black voting behavior, and redistricting all intersect with each other and help perpetuate the issue of economic stagnation among black people in Tallahassee. The first chapter consists of providing the historical context within Tallahassee dating all the way back to slavery in the mid-1800s when it was the slave trading capitol of the state. From there I focus on the transition from there to the era …

Journal of Social Sciences

This article examines the concept of basic income, its policy application in certain countries and the associated controversies in the midst of neo-liberalism. It employs a rights-based approach in examining the social protection system, seeing universal basic income as a socio-economic policy appropriate to all citizens and constituting the floor of social protection in line with the proposal made by the International Labour Organization (ILO). It argues that, in fact, in allocating benefits to target populations, attention should be paid to the provision of money and benefits without conditions. In sum, in the future, basic income needs to be considered …

Journal of Social Sciences

Criticisms of the state's role relate to many of its aspects - the continuing expansion of the scope of its responsibilities; its encroachment on people's lives and freedoms through its making of public policy, and its inefficiency of operation, as compared to the private sector. The origin of the state's role and its various types that led to a varying extent of intervention in society are delineated. Economic and political rationales for the state are discussed, arguing for its significance in public life and that the nonexistence of state is implausible. The state's roles in various kinds of public policy, …

Islamophobia As Represented By Thai Buddhist Organizations(โรคเกลียดกลัวอิสลามที่ถูกนำเสนอโดยองค์กรชาวพุทธไทย), Jesada Buaban

Journal of Social Sciences

Scholarly works on Islamophobia in Thailand always focus on the state's marginalization of Islam in Thai historiography and ultimately makes Muslims become strangers. I argue that the negative labeling of Islam has not only been adopted by the Thai state to support its militarization in the three southern provinces, but is also reproduced by conservative Buddhists to seek supports from the governmentand Buddhist followersthemselves. Therefore, IslamophobiainThailand cannot be understood without scrutinizing Buddhist groups who reproduce hatred and anti-Islam campaigns. This phenomenon occurs under the condition that the Thai state fails to promote secularism. While the government chooses to assimilate and satisfy …
