Families Belong Together: The Path To Family Sanctity In Public Housing, Mckayla Stokes Jan 2020

Families Belong Together: The Path To Family Sanctity In Public Housing, Mckayla Stokes

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

In its 2015 landmark civil rights decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, the Supreme Court finally held that the Equal Protection and Due Process Clauses of the United States Constitution guarantee same-sex couples’ marital equality. The Court’s unprecedented declaration that the right to marry is a fundamental right under the Due Process Clause strengthened married couples’ right to privacy because it subjects government actions infringing on marital unions to heightened scrutiny. The Supreme Court has the option to minimize the impact of Obergefell by interpreting the right to marriage very narrowly—as only encompassing the right to enter into a state-recognized union …

Salary History And The Equal Pay Act: An Argument For The Adoption Of “Reckless Discrimination” As A Theory Of Liability, Kate Vandenberg Jan 2020

Salary History And The Equal Pay Act: An Argument For The Adoption Of “Reckless Discrimination” As A Theory Of Liability, Kate Vandenberg

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

The Equal Pay Act (EPA) purports to prohibit employers from paying female employees less than male employees with similar qualifications; however, the affirmative defenses provided in the EPA are loopholes that perpetuate the gender pay gap. In particular, the fourth affirmative defense allows for wage differentials based on a “factor other than sex.” Many federal circuits have read this defense broadly to include wage differentials based on salary history. That is, an employer can pay a female employee less than her male counterparts because she was paid less by her previous employer. While salary history was once viewed as an …

Introduction: Toward An Engaged Feminist Heritage Praxis, Tiffany C. Fryer, Teresa Raczek Jan 2020

Introduction: Toward An Engaged Feminist Heritage Praxis, Tiffany C. Fryer, Teresa Raczek

Faculty Articles

We advocate a feminist approach to archaeological heritage work in order to transform heritage practice and the production of archaeological knowledge. We use an engaged feminist standpoint and situate intersubjectivity and intersectionality as critical components of this practice. An engaged feminist approach to heritage work allows the discipline to consider women’s, men’s, and gender non-conforming persons’ positions in the field, to reveal their contributions, to develop critical pedagogical approaches, and to rethink forms of representation. Throughout, we emphasize the intellectual labor of women of color, queer and gender non-conforming persons, and early white feminists in archaeology.

“Sharia Or Death”: The Mass Mediated Hegemonic Rhetoric Of Theocratic Populism In Nigeria’S Muslim North, Farooq Kperogi Jan 2020

“Sharia Or Death”: The Mass Mediated Hegemonic Rhetoric Of Theocratic Populism In Nigeria’S Muslim North, Farooq Kperogi

Faculty Articles

This paper explores the genealogy and contours of theocratic populism in Nigeria’s Muslim North from 1999 to2007. It examines the mass-mediated rhetorical articulations of Islamic theocratic populist politics in the region while laying bare its motivations in a religiously plural polity such as Nigeria. It argues that the introduction of Sharia laws in Nigeria’s Muslim majority northern states was a populist response by a traumatized hegemonic power bloc in Nigerian politics — which had hitherto taken for granted its right to dominate the social and politicalspace —to regain its political and discursive high ground against an emergent, competing power bloc. …

National Security Vs. Human Rights: A Game Theoretic Analysis Of The Tension Between These Objectives, Aniruddha Bagchi, Jomon Aliyas Paul Jan 2020

National Security Vs. Human Rights: A Game Theoretic Analysis Of The Tension Between These Objectives, Aniruddha Bagchi, Jomon Aliyas Paul

Faculty Articles

We explore why human rights violations take place in the midst of a rebellion. Authoritarian governments may not care for human rights but surprisingly several democratic governments have also condoned such violations. We show that the primary cause of such violations is faulty intelligence. There are two type of defective intelligence that can occur viz., missed alarm and false alarm. We consider each of these cases and determine the optimal human rights standard of the government. We then examine the effect of a decrease in the human rights standard on the probability of quelling the rebellion. In our theoretical model, …

The Impact Of Grief Work On Hospice Mental Health Providers Through A Bowen Family Systems Lens, Joshua Hernandez Jan 2020

The Impact Of Grief Work On Hospice Mental Health Providers Through A Bowen Family Systems Lens, Joshua Hernandez

Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects

Marriage and family therapists and other mental health professionals and clients can be thought of as their own, divine emotional unit, generating and distributing the anxiety of one to the other. In fact, Kerr and Bowen (1988) described anxiety as a driving force exchanged by every living organism, and the energy surrounded by every human relationship. Within a hospice setting, anxiety can be heightened due to catering to end-of-life care, which can potentially affect the emotional response and reactivity of the mental health professional, changing the course of treatment for the patient and their family. Emerging research within healthcare has …

Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Adults Who Have Experienced A Parental Divorce: Identifying Collaborative Divorce Aspects As They Adjusted To Adulthood, Arlene Brown Jan 2020

Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Adults Who Have Experienced A Parental Divorce: Identifying Collaborative Divorce Aspects As They Adjusted To Adulthood, Arlene Brown

Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects

Divorce itself is a traumatic experience for everyone involved, especially the children. Studies have been conducted to focus on the effects on children, and ways to help with adjustment. Furthermore, researchers have delved into the long-term effects parental divorce has on children. Collaborative divorce is an approach to divorce that utilizes a specially trained team of family law, financial, and mental health professionals (MHPs) working together with couples to resolve issues related to the dissolution of their marriage, the co-parenting of their children, and the restructuring of their lives–without involving the court system. Some of the aspects of a collaborative …

Exploring The Professional Development Of Mft Students Enrolled In Equine Assisted Family Therapy Coursework: An Experiential Learning Modality, Natalie Rothman

Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects

Equine assisted activities have been utilized in various manners with multiple populations in therapeutic and educational environments. A graduate level marriage and family therapy program in South Florida is currently offering Equine Assisted Relational Learning (EARL) activities focused on teaching a specific sub-model of Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP), known as Equine Assisted Family Therapy (EAFT). The experiential nature of EAP and EARL transforms abstract concepts such as thoughts and mannerisms into tangible experiences, as well as highlights behavioral patterns. The unique and innovative theoretical foundation of EAFT is being taught, demonstrated, and utilized to assist graduate level therapists with professional …

The Relationship Between Emotional Symptoms And Bully Role Behavior Engagement Among Boys With Autism Spectrum Disorder And Their Typically Developing Peers, Dashae Rodriguez-Harris Jan 2020

The Relationship Between Emotional Symptoms And Bully Role Behavior Engagement Among Boys With Autism Spectrum Disorder And Their Typically Developing Peers, Dashae Rodriguez-Harris

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Research has shown that individuals with autism spectrum disorder may be at a heightened risk of being involved in bullying behaviors compared to their typically developing peers because of the nature of ASD, with their difficulties in social interactions playing a key role. Engagement in bully role behaviors has a variety of poor outcomes for individuals with ASD, such as self-injurious behaviors, anxiety, school refusal, and damaged self-esteem. This is why it is important to have a clear understanding of the prevalence rates of bullying involvement for individuals with ASD and how that involvement may impact them. The aim of …

Effectiveness Of Online Credit Recovery Programs, Diana Barbara Schill

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This case study evaluating three high schools’ blended online credit recovery programs spanned the course of three years. The first part of the study examined the student demographics and outlined the basic structure of the programs. The demographics showed a disproportionate number of students of color and students receiving Free/Reduced Lunch in the online credit recovery programs at each school when compared to the school population. Each program shared the blended structure – online instruction with teacher facilitation. While there were over 24 online courses offered in the program, this study focused on the core courses that all ninth graders …

Virtual Faces In Virtual Spaces: Generating Social Capital In An Online World, Raymond James Miran Jan 2020

Virtual Faces In Virtual Spaces: Generating Social Capital In An Online World, Raymond James Miran

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This thesis examines how online virtual reality games can generate social capital in the

social video game VRChat. Past research explores the generation of social capital from social

media and video games. These platforms generate social capital through different processes.

These differences are due to the technological differences and divergent purposes of the

platforms. VRChat bridges the computer-mediated-communication platforms as a social video

game. This thesis examines how VRChat as an online virtual reality generates bridging and

bonding online social capital by combining elements of the two platforms.

Results from 21 in-depth interviews showed that players of VRChat generated both …

Why Some Authoritarian Regimes Do Not Just Win Elections But Win Big: Lessons From Cambodia And Malaysia, Limeng Ong Jan 2020

Why Some Authoritarian Regimes Do Not Just Win Elections But Win Big: Lessons From Cambodia And Malaysia, Limeng Ong

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Electoral authoritarian regimes have risen in the post-Cold War era. Elections and other nominally democratic institutions such political parties and legislatures not only do not make authoritarian regimes democratize but also help them to resist democratization. However, even if authoritarian regimes adopt electoral institutions, such adoption does not mean that all authoritarian regimes can easily manipulate elections. Indeed, some regimes hang on to power barely with simple majority votes, while others easily receive supermajority electoral support. What account for variation in electoral strength of ruling parties in authoritarian regimes? I attempt to answer this question. There are four main factors …

Often Overlooked, But Not Forgotten: The Influence Of Demographic Measure Constraints On Participant Affect, Attitudes, Behavior, And Response Codability, Joy S. Pawirosetiko Jan 2020

Often Overlooked, But Not Forgotten: The Influence Of Demographic Measure Constraints On Participant Affect, Attitudes, Behavior, And Response Codability, Joy S. Pawirosetiko

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Despite a growing number of recommendations varying in wording and response options, researchers have yet to agree on how to best request participant gender identity. Evidence suggests that gender binary and gender minority participants perceive gender identity measures differently, with gender binary participants potentially perceiving more gender inclusive measures as laborious and gender minority participants perceiving less gender inclusive measures as misgendering or invalidating. We sought to test whether seven versions of an online questionnaire (six experimental conditions with gender identity questions listed at the beginning of the questionnaire varying in gender inclusivity, and one control condition) significantly impacted participant …

Liberalism And The Problem Of Compassion In Rousseau, Smith, And Tocqueville, Lewis Hoss Jan 2020

Liberalism And The Problem Of Compassion In Rousseau, Smith, And Tocqueville, Lewis Hoss

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Liberal democracy has historically owed its attractiveness to the promise of a more compassionate society structured around pluralistic and tolerant principles. Yet recent events in western democracies seem to indicate a lack of compassionate social bonds. Why has a politics of compassion failed to materialize and what must be done to make good on the original promise of liberal democracy? To answer these questions, I provide a historically and theoretically grounded account of compassion as a principle of liberalism, with special attention to the political thought of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Adam Smith, and Alexis de Tocqueville. In particular, I seek to …

On The Verge Of Violence: How Bar Staff Manage Trouble Customers, Anthony Paul Cusumano Jan 2020

On The Verge Of Violence: How Bar Staff Manage Trouble Customers, Anthony Paul Cusumano

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

How do bouncers and bartenders utilize interpersonal management scripts to handle routinely encountered trouble customers? My study addresses this question and shows how bar staff remedy trouble behaviors without use of force, as well as demonstrates that bartenders play just as pivotal a role in managing those behaviors as bouncers. The data from in-depth interviewing was analyzed through a framework of trouble sociology and the dramaturgical perspective. Interviews were digitally recorded, transcribed, and coded into thematic categories based on frameworks and emergent themes. From the data, bar staff identified three major types of trouble customers (entitled, inebriated, creepy) and described …

The Role Of Prediction Error In A Behavioral Memory Reconsolidation Intervention For The Treatment Of Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms: Original Proposal And Update Due To The Covid-19 Global Pandemic, Benjamin Darnell Jan 2020

The Role Of Prediction Error In A Behavioral Memory Reconsolidation Intervention For The Treatment Of Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms: Original Proposal And Update Due To The Covid-19 Global Pandemic, Benjamin Darnell

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

A failure to naturally resolve posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) following exposure to a traumatic event is associated with costly and debilitating consequences. Interventions for PTSS are successful for only 40%-70% of patients, and treatment drop-out and symptom relapse are common. Recent research targeting memory reconsolidation mechanisms to augment the memory may provide important information regarding possible paradigms for improving the efficacy of trauma-focused interventions. This research indicates that the use of prediction error during a memory activation cue may result in memory destabilization allowing for the destabilized memory to be updated. Considering that PTSS are inherently memory-dependent, an intervention targeting …

The Gendered Political Economy Of Africa: How The Empowerment Of Women In Smallholder Farms Can Spearhead Economic Growth, Mayzie Shaver Jan 2020

The Gendered Political Economy Of Africa: How The Empowerment Of Women In Smallholder Farms Can Spearhead Economic Growth, Mayzie Shaver

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

The agricultural sector in Africa is positioned to determine the outcomes of perhaps the most consequential and deeply entangled challenges the global community will face in the coming decades: the environmental crisis, population explosion, world poverty and malnutrition, and international cooperation to promote stability within and between countries. As African nations grow, develop, and advance, the future trajectory of their industrialization and international cooperation will determine the prosperity of the global community. According to Dr. Kanayo F. Nwanze, Former President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IDAD), “clearly, it is necessary to have food systems that are economically, socially …

Viewing Bornean Human–Elephant Conflicts Through An Environmental Justice Lens, Elena C. Rubino, Christopher Serenari, Nurzhafarina Othman, Marc Ancrenaz, Fauzie Sarjono, Eddie Ahmad

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Sabah, on the northeastern corner of Borneo, is concurrently Malaysia’s largest producer of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) and home to the endangered Bornean elephants (Elephas maximus borneensis; elephants). Concomitantly, Sabah has been experiencing increasing and unsustainable human–elephant conflicts (HECs), which have not been thoroughly investigated from a human dimensions standpoint. To address this void, in March 2019, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 37 villagers located in the Sabah districts of Lahad Datu, Tawau, and Telupid to investigate villager cognitions regarding elephants, behaviors toward elephants, the formal and informal village institutions employed to mediate HECs, and the …

The Casc Framework: An Assessment Model For Students With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Laurel A. Snider Jan 2020

The Casc Framework: An Assessment Model For Students With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Laurel A. Snider

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

School psychologists pay a critical role in providing assessment and intervention services within the realm of special education. Within this role, they are highly likely to interact with students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Students with IDD are characterized by significantly lower than average cognitive and daily living skills that may be comorbid with difficulties with communication, social skills, or other domains. With these differences in mind, dominant assessment practices have been criticized as lacking social and empirical validity when applied to this population. Although students with IDD frequently undergo evaluations, they continue to face significantly poorer post-school outcomes …

Fiscal Triumvirate: Analyses Of Crowding Out From Deficit Spending, Of Domestic Migration From State Taxes, And Of The Irrelevance Of Credit Ratings On Municipal Debt Yields, Erwin John Antoni Iii Jan 2020

Fiscal Triumvirate: Analyses Of Crowding Out From Deficit Spending, Of Domestic Migration From State Taxes, And Of The Irrelevance Of Credit Ratings On Municipal Debt Yields, Erwin John Antoni Iii

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The crowding out theory originally predicted substantially large effects from government activity in a market, including the impact of deficit spending on the price of loanable funds, namely, interest rates. Initial empirical testing in the twentieth century showed these effects to be quite small but consistent, while later testing suggested that the theory was wrong entirely and that a phenomenon of “crowding in” is observed during periods of large deficit spending by governments. This dissertation contributes to the existing literature by accounting for the supply side of the loanable funds market. Incorporation of a measure of global savings saves the …

A Psychological Perspective On Elephant Rewilding, Janet Vt Pauketat Jan 2020

A Psychological Perspective On Elephant Rewilding, Janet Vt Pauketat

Animal Sentience

Baker & Winkler describe the complexities of captive elephant conservation efforts in Thailand through multiple lenses. They advocate rewilding captive elephants within mixed elephant-human communities based on the benefits to captive elephants as well as to Karen mahout communities, given the entrenched economic and social systems in Thailand. From a psychological perspective, this advocacy is grounded in considerations of culture, cognition, speciesism, the differential valuing of others in social hierarchies, and the potential for positive interaction to build positive emotions and trust that enable successful rewilding in a world of elephants and humans.

Macro-Appraisal And Professional Communities, Cory L. Nimer Jan 2020

Macro-Appraisal And Professional Communities, Cory L. Nimer

Faculty Publications

This paper explores the application of social network analysis tools and other quantitative measures for the macro-appraisal of a research community in order to identify individuals from whom to solicit professional papers. While the contributions of individual scholars can be quantified and reviewed in a variety of ways, network analysis provides a useful approach for assessing the contributions of scholars in terms of their connections with other researchers. Using the faculty of a university department as a case study, this study considers how visualizing networks might be used as an additional metric in a professional papers program or subject-based archive …

Freedom Of Journalism In International Human Rights Law, Edward L. Carter, Rosalie Westenskow

Faculty Publications

Contemporary attacks of various types have prompted calls for stronger public support and legal protections for journalism. Around the world, journalism faces not only government regulation that affects editorial content but also economic and corporate pressures as well as lack of public understanding of its societal functions. In the United States, courts and even journalism organizations have been reluctant to define journalism or single it out for special protection. But international human rights law presents a possible solution. This article discusses the international human rights law provisions that protect individuals engaged in journalism. The United Nations Human Rights Committee has …

Coopers Rock State Forest: How To Address Operations Cost And Shortfalls, Sullivan Wilcox Moore Jan 2020

Coopers Rock State Forest: How To Address Operations Cost And Shortfalls, Sullivan Wilcox Moore

Capstones and Honors Theses

Public lands provide opportunities for recreation and an escape from urban life. Coopers Rock State Forest in West Virginia features scenic views, hiking and biking trails, and other opportunities to get out and enjoy nature. However, despite increases in visitation, Coopers Rock operates under a deficit and faces backlogs of maintenance. Thus, this research attempts to estimate a value of Coopers Rock to visitors using the travel cost method and evaluates several fee-based policies through which Coopers Rock could capitalize on this visitation. Our results suggest that there are a range of values to visitors of visiting Coopers Rock State …
