There are several identifiable and ubiquitous reasons why U.S. democracy building interventions fail abroad. The literature has shown that the principal reason that U.S. democracy building efforts fail is that they prioritize seeking immediate stability over creating long-lasting support for liberal democratic institutions. The Syrian Civil War, which has generated more than 6.2 million refugees, has brought about one of greatest humanitarian crisis’ that Germany and Turkey have faced in modern times. It is argued that both counties were unprepared for this massive influx and responded to the situation in varying ways. Embracing humanistic and liberal ideals, along with the need for people to fill in the ageing workforce are among the reasons that made Germany the ideal destination for Syrian refugees. Conditional cash transfer programs have emerged all across Latin America, Africa, and Asia as an innovative approach to conventional forms of social assistance programs. This thesis explores the effectiveness of the program through case studies on Brazil’s Bolsa Família and Malawi’s Zomba Cash Transfer Program to examine whether the two programs have long-term impacts to reduce intergenerational poverty. I conclude that, while CCT programs are effective in meeting short-term objectives, further study must be conducted to determine whether they affect the cycle of intergenerational poverty in the long run.

University of North Florida (UNF) Special Collections does not have clear guidelines for collecting ‘rare’ books and maintaining them in our climate-controlled storage. Overcrowding is also a problem in Special Collections’ storage space. Both issues have led to a reassessment project of the noncirculating ‘rare’ books collected over the past 35 to 40 years. In the summer of 2018 UNF’s Resource Description Librarian surveyed the books under the direction of the Head of Special Collections and University Archives. This paper focuses on a for-credit cemetery recording class taught at Indian River State College (IRSC) and on the impact of the project on student perceptions of cultural heritage and historic preservation. One of the goals in creating this service learning course was to promote student awareness of the destructive risks that many historic cemeteries face and to impart the importance of stewardship over the archaeological record. We analyzed the relationships between religious internalization and social support, religious fundamentalism, and motivation for Divine and human relationships. 306 respondents from a religiously-affiliated university were recruited to completed an online survey. Our results suggested Divine relationships were most related to identification while fundamentalism was most related to introjection.

OER provided the chance to create a needed text for an initiative to bring the Oregon State Seal of Biliteracy to Higher Education, starting at Chemeketa Community College.
This text differs from a traditional 200 level languages course as it includes a broader focus to incorporate ACTLF's four language domains, and the materials are presented in-context to meet the unique needs of a Heritage Language Learner. The relevancy of the content has also been updated to touch on contemporary issues and themes, as well as bring-in new forms of media.

Through the generous support of the OIT library and Open Oregon, General Chemistry I and II (CHE 201 and 202) at Oregon Institute of Technology has been able to switch to OER texts this academic year. It is estimated that this switch has saved each student up to $300 per year. The text was remixed from Openstax Chemistry as well as other texts and multimedia and is hosted online via LibreTexts. In 2017 Keith Tierney, a business law instructor at Linn-Benton Community College (LBCC), was fed up with the high cost of his commercial textbook. Not only was it upwards of $300, it wasn't customized to his learning outcomes and editions went out of date quickly. He saw the announcement for LBCC's Textbook Affordability Grant and reached out to LBCC's OER Librarian, Michaela Willi Hooper, to learn more. Learning materials used in the classroom are a social justice issue. Traditional textbooks can present barriers to students in the form of cost as well as in the narrative embedded within the content. This year PCC designed and implemented a 2-part professional development opportunity: the Open Education and Equity Faculty Cohort. We asked instructors to explore intersections between open education, culturally responsive teaching, universal design and open pedagogy and then to implement some of their learning in curriculum revision.
