Two Decades Of Western Spruce Budworm Outbreaks In The Pacific Northwest, Nathan Roueche
Two Decades Of Western Spruce Budworm Outbreaks In The Pacific Northwest, Nathan Roueche
Scholars Week
Insect outbreaks are one of the important natural disturbance processes in forested ecosystems due to their tendency to periodically restructure stand composition and provide dynamic fluctuation via trophic interactions. Multiple agencies across various jurisdictions collect annual forest health inventory data via aerial detection survey (ADS) mapping, allowing trends in forest disease and pest prevalence to be explored across both space and time. While these data sets are a powerful tool for research and management, the data is often recorded and stored in regionally differing formats and is not easily accessible to researchers or the public. The lack of cohesive broad-scale …
Representation Of Addiction In The Media, Lauren Gallup
Representation Of Addiction In The Media, Lauren Gallup
Scholars Week
Presenting the story of addiction in news and entertainment media presents an ethical dilemma for those doing the storytelling. This dilemma faces the ethical paradigm of Right vs. Wrong. In this research project, I focused on how addiction is presented in the media. Media representation of addiction shapes how people think about this disease and can affect legislation to support assistance for recovering addicts. This led me to determine that media has an important place in shaping how we think about addiction. In this paper, I identified how media can do a public good by accurately and ethically covering stories …

The Education Beat In A Declining Industry, Jon Foster
Scholars Week
The collapse of the newspaper industry and the disappearance of the education beat on many local and national newspapers can have profound impacts on journalism, civic engagement and our democracy. In this paper, I look at the the current state of education reporting in America and examine the ethical dilemmas local and national news agencies face as well as the hopeful future it has in a transforming news industry.
Bees And Trees: The Ecological Ramifications Of Our "Honey-Nut" Agriculture, Becci Larreau
Bees And Trees: The Ecological Ramifications Of Our "Honey-Nut" Agriculture, Becci Larreau
Scholars Week
People love almonds and honey bees. The honey bee is the only agriculturally-reliable pollinator of almond trees. California produces the entire domestic supply of almonds, and ~80% of the international supply. In early spring, nearly all of the commercially-managed beehives in the nation travel by truck to California to pollinate the almond orchards. They remain for a mere few weeks and then move on to other areas to service other crops or to seek honey forage. Migratory beekeepers are the linchpin that keeps the wheels of this particular agricultural system in motion. Without the migratory beekeeping industry, California's multi-billion dollar …
Creating A Canadian-American Wildfire Atlas For Late 19th-21st Centuries, Kate Welch
Creating A Canadian-American Wildfire Atlas For Late 19th-21st Centuries, Kate Welch
Scholars Week
Wildfires are increasingly on the minds of people living in Western North America as climate change and long periods of anthropogenic fire exclusion shift the dominant fire regimes toward possibly higher severity, larger fires than we remember. We are still piecing together the history of wildfires and how they have changed since Europeans settled in North America and moved West, and we know very little about the fire history of the areas where a large portion of our population currently lives. Using available government resources and data, I synthesized and created a fire Atlas of wildland fires in the Western …
Finding Climatologically Teleconnected Sites With A Network Of Tree Ring Chronologies, Hannah Lagassey
Finding Climatologically Teleconnected Sites With A Network Of Tree Ring Chronologies, Hannah Lagassey
Scholars Week
We need information about the past to understand what is happening in the present and to predict what may happen in the future. Trees record climate conditions in their annual growth rings throughout their lives, providing us with centuries of valuable paleoclimate data. In addition to reconstructing climate records, dendrochronologists use tree rings to reconstruct the records of climate-driven phenomena, such as hydrological variables, prior to the start of instrumental records. Reconstruction models are improved with the inclusion of multiple tree species and multiple sites, which act as predictors of climatological and hydrological variables. I identified tree ring chronologies within …
Dependence Of Hydrological Modeling On Spatial Resolution In Lake Whatcom Watershed, Emily Mcginty
Dependence Of Hydrological Modeling On Spatial Resolution In Lake Whatcom Watershed, Emily Mcginty
Scholars Week
Remotely sensed digital elevation data can be utilized through geographic information science (GIS) techniques to model watershed and stream delineations. These techniques allow analysts to easily produce results that would otherwise require hours of intense field work, if possible at all. The accuracy of these watershed and stream models can be dependent on the resolution of the elevation data, and choosing an inappropriate resolution can result in further analyses producing inaccurate and/or misleading results. The purpose of my research is to quantify the differences between hydrological models developed from elevation data at varying resolutions. I chose the Lake Whatcom watershed …

The Effect Of Lineup Size On Eyewitness Accuracy, Alyssa Baumann
The Effect Of Lineup Size On Eyewitness Accuracy, Alyssa Baumann
Augsburg Honors Review
The research investigated the impact of the number of members in a police lineup on eyewitness identification. Participants attempted to identify the perpetrator from either a sequential or simultaneous lineup. The number of members in the lineup differed between 6 members and 12 members, simultaneous or sequential lineup presentation, and target-present or target-absent. In the target-present condition, the research was concerned with correct identifications. Thus, the 6 member simultaneous lineup should yield the most correct identifications. The 12 member simultaneous lineup should yield the second highest. The 6 and 12 member sequential lineup presentation should yield fewer correct identifications because …
Charicteristics Of Total Institutions In The Merry Pranksters And Augsburg College: A Goffmanian Analysis, Matt Dunn
Augsburg Honors Review
Ken Kesey's classic novel One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest recounts the experiences of R.P. McMurphy, a criminal sentenced to time in a mental hospital. Kesey's illustration of the mental hospital provides the stereotypical view of "institutions." However, many other areas of life go unnoticed as institutions, such as schools or even families or close-knit groups of friends. Despite general unawareness of the extent of institutions, institutions have direct consequences for the identities of individuals that exist within them. In this analysis I will first outline Goffman's theory of total institutions focusing on the general characteristics of total institutions, the …

A Comparison Of Resiliency In Adult Children Of Alcoholics Versus Adult Children Of Non-Alcoholics, Skylar Redlin, Jamie Borchardt
Modern Psychological Studies
Alcoholism is a common occurrence. According to the National Association for Children of Alcoholics (1998), there are approximately 76 million Americans who have had a family member with an alcohol problem. Adult children of alcoholics (ACoAs) were studied to compare the differences between resiliency scores with adult children of non-alcoholics (NACoAs). We found that p = .022, indicating there was a significant difference among ACoAs and NACoAs. We found that NCoAs had a higher resiliency score than NACoAs. We also looked at differences in resiliency scores among the ACoAs who had a same gendered alcoholic parent and an opposite gendered …

Teacher Perceptions Of Environmental Science In Rural Northwestern New Mexico Public Schools, Marie Quiahuitl Julienne
Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs
In this study, I explored what teachers perceive as the factors that impact their teaching of environmental science in rural secondary level schools in northwestern New Mexico. I adapted Bronfenbrenner’s (1994) ecological systems model, based on four environmental subsystem levels (microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, and macrosystem), as the conceptual framework to address the major research question of this study, and developed 18 interview questions to explore teachers’ perceptions of factors that influence their teaching of environmental science. I investigated the perspectives science teachers have about environmental science topics and the influences they perceive that affect how they teach environmental science, and …

The benefits nature provides to people, called ecosystem services, are increasingly recognized and accounted for in assessments of infrastructure development, agricultural management, conservation prioritization, and sustainable sourcing. These assessments are often limited by data, however, a gap with tremendous potential to be filled through Earth observations (EO), which produce a variety of data across spatial and temporal extents and resolutions. Despite widespread recognition of this potential, in practice few ecosystem service studies use EO. Here, we identify challenges and opportunities to using EO in ecosystem service modeling and assessment. Some challenges are technical, related to data awareness, processing, and access. …

Moral Injury Among Professionals In K–12 Education, Erin Sugrue
Faculty Authored Articles
This article presents the quantitative portion of a mixed methods study of moral injury among professionals in K–12 public education. Using a cross-sectional correlational survey design, 218 licensed K–12 professionals from 68 schools in one urban school district in the Midwest completed an on-line survey that included measures of moral injury and emotional and behavioral correlates. The K–12 professionals exhibited levels of moral injury similar to those experienced by military veterans. Correlational analyses found that experiences of moral injury were associated with feelings of guilt, troubled conscience, burnout, and the intention to leave one’s job. Linear regression analyses demonstrated that …

Positive Bias In Positive Psychology, Brandy R. Hutton, Max Barham
Positive Bias In Positive Psychology, Brandy R. Hutton, Max Barham
2019 Symposium
As the positive psychology movement has began to ramp up, many self-report measures have been created to research positive emotions such as gratitude, joy, and humility. While these measurements have been beneficial in giving researchers a baseline understanding into positive emotions, they are also explicit which presents the problem of self-presentation bias. We tend to view ourselves in a positive light and therefore rate ourselves more positively on self-reports. The purpose of this study was to investigate the distribution skew of commonly used positive self-report measurements for possible negative skew. We ran frequency distributions and calculated the skew of multiple …

Lung Cancer Survivors Who Continue Smoking After Diagnosis Are More Likely To Be Living With An Individual Who Smokes, Sue Treppenhauer, Amy Stine, Kevin R. Criswell Ph.D
2019 Symposium
Abstract
Introduction: In the United States, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women. Smoking increases the risk for lung cancer, and smoking cessation after diagnosis improves cancer survival and lowers rates of recurrence. Using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), we examined individual attitudes, perceived control, and subjective norms as predictors of lung cancer survivors’ intention to quit smoking.
Method: We conducted a secondary data analysis to examine attitudes, perceived control, and subjective norms of smoking in a sample of lung cancer survivors (N= 171). Analyses were limited to …
