Family Learning Program
Deconstructing biases and reflecting upon our personal and families’ histories, choices, habits, and traditions is hard work. Our curriculum provides individual families, groups of families, and educators with structure and support as they embark or continue on their anti-racist learning journeys. And we find that through this work, not only do our efforts impact our present, but our efforts impact generations to come as well. The stories we make, seek, and tell about ourselves, our families, and our communities become far more nuanced, rich, and full.

Creating And Maintaining High-Quality Educational Spaces For Black Children: Challenges And Strategies, Darius B. Mensah
Creating And Maintaining High-Quality Educational Spaces For Black Children: Challenges And Strategies, Darius B. Mensah
Ed.D. Dissertations in Practice
Public education in the United States offers disparate outcomes that negatively impact Black children. Leaders who go against the norms and create spaces where Black children thrive face professional and personal challenges. Yet educators still do this work, employing strategies to protect their work and themselves. This study explores how educational leaders describe their experiences in creating and sustaining high-quality educational environments for Black students through the lens of Critical Race Theory. Nine participants, including the author, describe their backgrounds, their entry into the field of education, their professional and personal challenges, and the strategies they have used to persist …

Autism In Females: Understanding The Overlooked Diagnoses, Unique Challenges, And Recommendations, Piper Hutson, James Hutson
Faculty Scholarship
Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects individuals of both sexes. However, females with ASC frequently remain undiagnosed or misdiagnosed due to a range of factors, including gender bias in the medical profession, societal expectations, and a lack of knowledge about the unique challenges they face. For instance, the gendered subset of the population often struggles with social interaction and communication, relying more on analytical thinking, which can lead to difficulty in generating acceptable responses and behaviors. At the same time, females are more adept at masking their innate behaviors associated with the condition and hyper-focus on …

Citizenship Starts Here: A Community Engaged Approach To Civic Education, Grace Northern
Citizenship Starts Here: A Community Engaged Approach To Civic Education, Grace Northern
Stevenson Center for Community and Economic Development—Student Research
Abstract:
In 2015, Illinois legislators passed HB 4025 which required every public high school to include a civics course for students to complete before graduation. In 2019, this bill was expanded to include middle school students through Public Act 101-025. In this study, I investigate how the civic education standards as outlined by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and other school climate factors impacted middle school students’ civic engagement. I used data collected from the Center of Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) and the Illinois Civics Hub. The sample consisted of 497 middle school …

Re-Imagining Mandatory Reporting: Professionalization's Complicity, Sam Harrell, Stephanie Wahab
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Mandatory reporting of child abuse is a part of the civil legal system that can activate a policy cascade disproportionately criminalizing racialized and marginalized communities. While social work scholarship has explored ways to increase provider compliance with mandatory reporting laws, there is a dearth of research focused on how social work education guides future providers towards the praxis of mandatory reporting discourses. This article presents findings from a content analysis of social work textbook excerpts focused on mandatory reporting of child abuse in the U.S. We found that textbooks affirm social work’s loyalty to the State by approaching mandatory reporting …

Understanding “Service Learning” In A Traditional Islamic Boarding Schools In Aceh, Indonesia, Ismail Anshari, Teuku Zulfikar, Tihalimah Tihalimah, Irwan Abdullah, Mujiburrahman Mujiburrahman
The Qualitative Report
Traditional Islamic educational institution, known as Dayah, has been popular in Aceh for their ability to produce highly qualified Muslim scholars. This popularity was due to its ability to implement a special type of learning strategy known as beut pubeut or service learning (SL) in the Dayah across Aceh. In spite of the emergence of modern teaching approach, the SL in the Dayah is persistent. Therefore, this research aims to discuss the nature of SL and its strengths and investigate the effectiveness of the SL as implemented in the Dayah. As this is a qualitative study, the data for …

Falling Into Gaps: Navigating Research Practices Across Global South And Global North, A Conversation, Sarah Ahmed, Navjotpal Kaur, Malida Mooken, Sumeet Sekhon
The Qualitative Report
This article is derived from conversations among four early career researchers on epistemic inequalities and challenges faced in universities, more especially in carrying out research. The conversations took place in the context of a qualitative research laboratory centered on the global South. We share experiences and issues associated with being trained as researchers in the global North and doing fieldwork in the global South. We also reflect on dominant structures and processes in universities and the marginalization of “other” or “alternative” knowledge systems. Whilst recognising the many ongoing and parallel academic discussions on such issues, we posit that there remains …
Effective Leader Development Within A Church-Planting Organization For A Changing And Chaotic World, Jeremy Davis
Effective Leader Development Within A Church-Planting Organization For A Changing And Chaotic World, Jeremy Davis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A challenge in cross-cultural church planting is developing leaders. Cross-cultural church-planting organizations like Latin American Mission (LAM; pseudonym) that lack a leadership development strategy struggle to form lasting leaders, sending missionaries with Biblical training but not leader development training. Additionally, developing leaders in a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) environment creates specific challenges that missionaries must address. The purpose of this qualitative, Delphi method study was to investigate the leadership development perceptions and experiences among existing LAM missionaries in the regions of Latin America (Colombia, Cuba, Mexico City, Peru, Brazil, and Ecuador) to provide suggestions for improving effective leadership …
On-Campus Mental Health Service Use Among College Students With Autism: A Case Study Applying The Andersen Behavioral Model Of Health Services Use, Estella C. Lilyquist
On-Campus Mental Health Service Use Among College Students With Autism: A Case Study Applying The Andersen Behavioral Model Of Health Services Use, Estella C. Lilyquist
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The unique set of impairments and limitations presented by students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) make the accessing of campus-based nonacademic resources more difficult and complicated than their typically developed peers. Each year, the rate of students entering college with disabilities continues to grow, but their mental well-being is relatively poor. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to apply the conceptual framework of the Andersen behavioral model of health services use (ABMHSU) to the experiences of college students with ASD to understand and predict their utilization of campus-provided mental health resources. The participants were seven college students with …
