Chinese Yuan Interest Rate Swap Yields, Tanweer Akram, Khawaja Mamun Jan 2023

Chinese Yuan Interest Rate Swap Yields, Tanweer Akram, Khawaja Mamun

WCBT Faculty Publications

This paper models the dynamics of Chinese yuan–denominated long-term interest rate swap yields. It shows that the short-term interest rate exerts a decisive influence on the long-term swap yield after controlling for various macrofinancial variables, such as core inflation, the growth of industrial production, the percent change in the equity price index, and the percentage change in the Chinese yuan exchange rate. The autoregressive distributed lag approach is applied to model the dynamics of the long-term swap yield. The findings reinforce and extend John Maynard Keynes’s conjecture that in advanced countries, as well as emerging market economies such as China, …

Trauma Clusters And Iorns Measure For Sex Offense Treatment Outcomes, Katherine Carlson Jan 2023

Trauma Clusters And Iorns Measure For Sex Offense Treatment Outcomes, Katherine Carlson

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Adverse Childhood Experiences or ACEs are traumatic experiences that occur for children including abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2021). The pattern of ACEs grouping together, or what will be known as ACEs Clusters, has impact on outcomes for specific populations (Lacey et al., 2020). Individuals convicted of a sexual offense (ICSO) have often experienced childhood physical and verbal abuse (Levenson et al., 2014). It was hypothesized that ACEs clusters for the ICSO population will be: low ACEs, household dysfunction, and household violence. To evaluate whether an ICSO is at risk for engaging in violent …

Body Shame And Wellness: Consequences Of Being Fat, Edith Halina James Jan 2023

Body Shame And Wellness: Consequences Of Being Fat, Edith Halina James

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

People who live in larger bodies have unique experiences which may influence their overall wellbeing. While primary care providers may choose to focus on weight and physical health, there are numerous emotional consequences to being fat, including social stigma and shame. Unfortunately, there are few studies researching the experience of fat people, resulting in a significant gap in knowledge. The present study seeks to provide some preliminary information about the fat experience, which can be utilized in future research and in clinical and interpersonal settings. A convenience sample of young adults (ages 18−30 years) was derived from undergraduate and graduate …

From Constructive Ambiguities To Structural Contradictions: The Twilight Of The Good Friday Agreement, Chris O'Ralaigh Jan 2023

From Constructive Ambiguities To Structural Contradictions: The Twilight Of The Good Friday Agreement, Chris O'Ralaigh

Articles

The Good Friday Agreement contained a series of constructive ambiguities which were critical to ensuring that it received broad cross-political support. These ambiguities were reflective of the balance of political power of the time. Once institutionalized, they contained an immanent potential to morph in to structural contradictions as the re-balancing of demographic and political power in Ireland moved from latent to manifest status. As the Agreement reaches its 25th anniversary, three outstanding structural contradictions are manifesting, prompted by Brexit and the re-introduction of the ‘Irish question’ in to Irish-British relations. The constitutional status of the North of Ireland, the raison …

Title Ix's Trans Panic, Deborah L. Brake Jan 2023

Title Ix's Trans Panic, Deborah L. Brake

Articles

Sport is an agent of social change, but that change does not always track in a progressive direction. Sport can be a site for contesting and reversing the gains of progressive social movements as much as furthering the values of equality and justice for historically marginalized groups. This dynamic of contestation and reversal is now playing out in a new wave of anti-transgender backlash that has gained adherents among some proponents of equal athletic opportunities for girls and women. In this latest twist in the debate over who deserves the opportunity to compete, the sex-separate athletic programming permitted by Title …

Understanding An American Paradox: An Overview Of The Racial Muslim: When Racism Quashes Religious Freedom, Spearit Jan 2023

Understanding An American Paradox: An Overview Of The Racial Muslim: When Racism Quashes Religious Freedom, Spearit

Articles

In The Racial Muslim: When Racism Quashes Religious Freedom, Sahar Aziz unveils a mechanism that perpetuates the persecution of religion. While the book’s title suggests a problem that engulfs Muslims, it is not a new problem, but instead a recurring theme in American history. Aziz constructs a model that demonstrates how racialization of a religious group imposes racial characteristics on that group, imbuing it with racial stereotypes that effectively treat the group as a racial rather than religious group deserving of religious liberty.

In identifying a racialization process that effectively veils religious discrimination, Aziz’s book points to several important …

Surveillance Normalization, Christian Sundquist Jan 2023

Surveillance Normalization, Christian Sundquist

Articles

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the government has expanded public surveillance measures in an attempt to combat the spread of the virus. As the pandemic wears on, racialized communities and other marginalized groups are disproportionately affected by this increased level of surveillance. This article argues that increases in public surveillance as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic give rise to the normalization of surveillance in day-to-day life, with serious consequences for racialized communities and other marginalized groups. This article explores the legal and regulatory effects of surveillance normalization, as well as how to protect civil rights and liberties …

The International Legal Order And The Rule Of Law, Vivian Grosswald Curran Jan 2023

The International Legal Order And The Rule Of Law, Vivian Grosswald Curran

Articles

This article addresses whether international law today is capable of instituting the rule of law. It offers a renewed look at the internationalists who brought us modern international law, such as Lauterpacht, Cassin and Lemkin. They tenaciously worked at placing the individual’s right to life and to human dignity front and center in international law while also preserving peace among states. Their struggle began in earnest first in the interwar years after the “war to end all wars” (1918 – 1939), and then again in 1945 after yet another, still worse, world war had occurred, devastating Europe, but leaving the …

Dynamic Correlations Of Bond And Equity Futures And Macroeconomic Determinants: International Evidence, Nikiforos T. Laopodis, Theophano Patra, Vassilis Thomas Jan 2023

Dynamic Correlations Of Bond And Equity Futures And Macroeconomic Determinants: International Evidence, Nikiforos T. Laopodis, Theophano Patra, Vassilis Thomas

Business Faculty Publications

This paper examines whether the dynamic co-movements between stock-bond futures markets may be driven by domestic and international macroeconomic factors. The empirical analysis also investigates whether economic uncertainty and geopolitical risks have an impact on the dynamic conditional correlations of bond and equity futures markets. The results pointed to significance of domestic inflation and industrial production, while the 3M USD Libor and 3M Euribor surfaced as determinants of the dynamic equity-bond futures correlations. Finally, the paper examines the impact of the pandemic on the dynamic correlations with the split of the sample in pre- and post-pandemic periods and it was …

Explicit Rule Learning: A Cognitive Tutorial Method To Train Users Of Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning Systems, Anne Linja Jan 2023

Explicit Rule Learning: A Cognitive Tutorial Method To Train Users Of Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning Systems, Anne Linja

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Today’s intelligent software systems, such as Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning systems, are sophisticated, complicated, sometimes complex systems. In order to effectively interact with these systems, novice users need to have a certain level of understanding. An awareness of a system’s underlying principles, rationale, logic, and goals can enhance the synergistic human-machine interaction. It also benefits the user to know when they can trust the systems’ output, and to discern boundary conditions that might change the output. The purpose of this research is to empirically test the viability of a Cognitive Tutorial approach, called Explicit Rule Learning. Several approaches have been used …

Marine Science Education At The Community Boating Center, Sandy Rost

College of the Environment Internship Reports

Though this has been incredible hands-on experience with education, I found myself starting to ask questions about the inner workings of our programming. I began to wonder how a tiny non-profit is able to reach so many people in our community and effectively at that. In the past two seasons, CBC
management has been making connections with local schools and began developing field trip programs. I found myself particularly interested in these relationships with schools.

Undergraduate Thesis - From Plato To Policy: The Religious History Of Environmental Thought And Its Role In The Deepwater Horizon Disaster, Isaac Peterson Jan 2023

Undergraduate Thesis - From Plato To Policy: The Religious History Of Environmental Thought And Its Role In The Deepwater Horizon Disaster, Isaac Peterson

College of the Environment Internship Reports

I will begin by setting the scene of Deepwater Horizon and the events leading up to and following the blowout, providing critical context to understanding why this disaster happened. I will then give a brief summary of the history of deepwater drilling in the Gulf of Mexico in order to provide some of the historical context not apparent in the actual event itself. Next I will dive into the rich history of Greek and Roman environmental philosophy, describing crucial theories from Plato’s Republic as well as thoughts from his student Aristotle, Pythagoras, and the Stoics.

College of the Environment Internship Reports

The activities that I did during my internship were done in three steps. The initial step was to collaborate with students, faculty and staff to identify the needs of students. Through research and outreach, we discovered that students want to develop their academic, social, and professional identities. The second step was finding mentees, which was done by creating posters, speaking in classes, and getting the word out to students. The third and final step was developing, planning, and attending events with assigned mentees. The activities done within the internship helped to achieve the mission of making students feel seen and …

The Whatcom Racial Equity Commission (WREC) is a project started by Shu-Ling Zhao and Kristina Michele Martens in the wake of the George Floyd murder and police brutality. Their goal was to create a community-led commission that would address racial equity in Whatcom County. These two wonderful women were supported by the Chuckanut Health Foundation (CHF) and began work on this project in 2020. In 2021, Shu, Kristina, and Heather Flaherty (the Executive Director of CHF) gave a presentation in an Environmental Political Science class I was taking. Fund For The Public Interest Intern, Isabella Alvarez

College of the Environment Internship Reports

When I accepted an internship with Fund For The Public Interest, my learning goals were simple: learn how a national nonprofit organization of such great size is managed, gain insight into how the organization’s funds are utilized, and learn more about each state’s environmental research and advocacy process. While I do feel I accomplished all of my learning goals in my position, I also learned various other priceless lessons through my experience with the Denver office, skills that I am confident would benefit any college student regardless of their desired field or career path after graduation.

As an intern at LEAD, I had been involved in most of the work, from hours at the worksite removing nonnative plants and some truly baffling trash (including several car parts, an old coffee maker, and a kayak paddle) to early morning meetings debating how many cubic yards of compost we needed to adequately amend the soil. I joined the LEAD team as one of four undergraduate interns hired in September, …

Comparing Music- And Food-Evoked Autobiographical Memories In Young And Older Adults: A Diary Study, Kelly Jakubowski, Amy M. Belfi, Lia Kvavilashvili, Abbigail Ely, Mark Gill, Gemma Herbert

Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Previous Research Has Found that Music Brings Back More Vivid and Emotional Autobiographical Memories Than Various Other Retrieval Cues. However, Such Studies Have Often Been Low in Ecological Validity and Constrained by Relatively Limited Cue Selection and Predominantly Young Adult Samples. Here, We Compared Music to Food as Cues for Autobiographical Memories in Everyday Life in Young and Older Adults. in Two Separate Four-Day Periods, 39 Younger (Ages 18–34) and 39 Older (Ages 60–77) Adults Recorded their Music- and Food-Evoked Autobiographical Memories in Paper Diaries. Across Both Age Groups, Music Triggered More Frequent Autobiographical Memories, a Greater Proportion of Involuntary …

Guest Editor’S Introduction April 2023, Amy M. Belfi Jan 2023

Guest Editor’S Introduction April 2023, Amy M. Belfi

Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

One of the most commonly reported reasons for listening to music is simply because people find it enjoyable (Sanflippo et al., 2020). Despite aesthetic appreciation playing an important role in the motivation to listen to music, aesthetic responses to music have not been investigated as frequently as in other types of artistic modalities. This is perhaps due to the history of the field of music perception and cognition, which has traditionally focused more on basic perceptual functions and components of music, such as perception of pitch and rhythm, rather than aesthetic aspects of music listening. At this point, the study …

How Masculinity Beliefs Impact Lgbtqia+ Relationships, Louise Leonard Jan 2023

How Masculinity Beliefs Impact Lgbtqia+ Relationships, Louise Leonard

Holster Scholar Projects

This research study looked at the masculinity beliefs of individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community and whether they were associated with participants’ relationship satisfaction. 85 participants completed questions from the Male Role Norms Inventory-Revised (MRNI-R) to determine their masculinity beliefs and the Couples Satisfaction Index (16-item version) to measure relationship satisfaction. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, ANOVA, correlation, and regression analysis. Our research hypotheses were that LGBTQIA+ individuals will have a low MRNI-R score (indicating less traditional masculinity beliefs) and that a lower score on the MRNI-R would correlate with higher relationship satisfaction. Our hypotheses were partially supported. Participants …

The Fashioning Of Individual And Group Identities In The Thrifttok Community, Kathryn Andronowitz Jan 2023

The Fashioning Of Individual And Group Identities In The Thrifttok Community, Kathryn Andronowitz

Holster Scholar Projects

In the wake of the Covid-19 lockdown, a noticeable surge of videos focused on thrifted clothing appeared on the social media platform TikTok, coinciding with an increase in offline thrift store traffic. Individual contributors to these trends comprise a networked community of popular creators and lifestyle followers of these thrifting videos on TikTok, or “ThriftTok,” based on the commonly-used hashtag of the same name. The ThriftTok community is not monolithic. Its productions encompass a spectrum of videos ranging from flea market explorations and goth-style thrifted fashion, to reselling tips and “thrift with me” videos. Its participants range from indie band …

This mapping was done in ArcGIS Desktop, an older predecessor to ArcGIS Pro. The first step of mapping a claim is to look it up in the Department of Ecology’s Water Resources Database. Each claim that we map has a digitized written application which tells us (more or less) of the person filing the claim, and the location of that claim. Afterwards, I would have to transcribe and map the location as best as I can in ArcGIS Desktop.

This year was a major transforma on for L.E.A.D. Prior to this year, according to co-director of L.E.A.D., Ava Stone, interns had few responsibili es. Interns would go to work par es every week but had almost nothing to do outside of that. This was likely a result of L.E.A.D.’s old format of going from site to site, and not inves ng in a space to improve and develop it. With shi ing to a project-based program, Ava Stone and Brandon McWilliams wanted specialized interns who would s ll par cipate in the work par es, but also fulfill specific …

For my internship this quarter, I decided to work with my current employer, LIHI, outside of my scheduled hours to research how to get solar panels installed at Gardenview Village. The idea of installing solar panels on the individual units was not originally mine, it was one that was floated around by some of the people living at the village. I thought it was a great idea, though, and was curious about what the process would be like to implement this idea. The main objective of this project was to research whether or not it is possible or practical to have …
