Comparing Music- And Food-Evoked Autobiographical Memories In Young And Older Adults: A Diary Study, Kelly Jakubowski, Amy M. Belfi, Lia Kvavilashvili, Abbigail Ely, Mark Gill, Gemma Herbert

Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Previous Research Has Found that Music Brings Back More Vivid and Emotional Autobiographical Memories Than Various Other Retrieval Cues. However, Such Studies Have Often Been Low in Ecological Validity and Constrained by Relatively Limited Cue Selection and Predominantly Young Adult Samples. Here, We Compared Music to Food as Cues for Autobiographical Memories in Everyday Life in Young and Older Adults. in Two Separate Four-Day Periods, 39 Younger (Ages 18–34) and 39 Older (Ages 60–77) Adults Recorded their Music- and Food-Evoked Autobiographical Memories in Paper Diaries. Across Both Age Groups, Music Triggered More Frequent Autobiographical Memories, a Greater Proportion of Involuntary …

Guest Editor’S Introduction April 2023, Amy M. Belfi

Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

One of the most commonly reported reasons for listening to music is simply because people find it enjoyable (Sanflippo et al., 2020). Despite aesthetic appreciation playing an important role in the motivation to listen to music, aesthetic responses to music have not been investigated as frequently as in other types of artistic modalities. This is perhaps due to the history of the field of music perception and cognition, which has traditionally focused more on basic perceptual functions and components of music, such as perception of pitch and rhythm, rather than aesthetic aspects of music listening. At this point, the study …

How Masculinity Beliefs Impact Lgbtqia+ Relationships, Louise Leonard Jan 2023

How Masculinity Beliefs Impact Lgbtqia+ Relationships, Louise Leonard

Holster Scholar Projects

This research study looked at the masculinity beliefs of individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community and whether they were associated with participants’ relationship satisfaction. 85 participants completed questions from the Male Role Norms Inventory-Revised (MRNI-R) to determine their masculinity beliefs and the Couples Satisfaction Index (16-item version) to measure relationship satisfaction. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, ANOVA, correlation, and regression analysis. Our research hypotheses were that LGBTQIA+ individuals will have a low MRNI-R score (indicating less traditional masculinity beliefs) and that a lower score on the MRNI-R would correlate with higher relationship satisfaction. Our hypotheses were partially supported. Participants …

The Fashioning Of Individual And Group Identities In The Thrifttok Community, Kathryn Andronowitz Jan 2023

The Fashioning Of Individual And Group Identities In The Thrifttok Community, Kathryn Andronowitz

Holster Scholar Projects

In the wake of the Covid-19 lockdown, a noticeable surge of videos focused on thrifted clothing appeared on the social media platform TikTok, coinciding with an increase in offline thrift store traffic. Individual contributors to these trends comprise a networked community of popular creators and lifestyle followers of these thrifting videos on TikTok, or “ThriftTok,” based on the commonly-used hashtag of the same name. The ThriftTok community is not monolithic. Its productions encompass a spectrum of videos ranging from flea market explorations and goth-style thrifted fashion, to reselling tips and “thrift with me” videos. Its participants range from indie band …

Dept Of Ecology - Gis Intern, Keiman Park-Egan

College of the Environment Internship Reports

This mapping was done in ArcGIS Desktop, an older predecessor to ArcGIS Pro. The first step of mapping a claim is to look it up in the Department of Ecology’s Water Resources Database. Each claim that we map has a digitized written application which tells us (more or less) of the person filing the claim, and the location of that claim. Afterwards, I would have to transcribe and map the location as best as I can in ArcGIS Desktop.

Gis Analyst, Tyler Balthrop

College of the Environment Internship Reports

Actalent allowed me to work as a paid internship for Wiser Imagery Services as a GIS Analyst. As a GIS analyst day to day my job can be completely different every single day or it could be the exact same thing day after day. It just depends on the deadlines, the client we are working for and the task at hand. Often the contracts that Wiser receives are with the federal government. Many of the positions do require security clearances but not all. However, that is not to say that the information does not hold value to potential harmful actors.

Lead Web Development And Outreach Intern, Mate Pasztor

College of the Environment Internship Reports

This year was a major transforma on for L.E.A.D. Prior to this year, according to co-director of L.E.A.D., Ava Stone, interns had few responsibili es. Interns would go to work par es every week but had almost nothing to do outside of that. This was likely a result of L.E.A.D.’s old format of going from site to site, and not inves ng in a space to improve and develop it. With shi ing to a project-based program, Ava Stone and Brandon McWilliams wanted specialized interns who would s ll par cipate in the work par es, but also fulfill specific …

Low Income Housing Institute Researcher, Alexis Light

College of the Environment Internship Reports

For my internship this quarter, I decided to work with my current employer, LIHI, outside of my scheduled hours to research how to get solar panels installed at Gardenview Village. The idea of installing solar panels on the individual units was not originally mine, it was one that was floated around by some of the people living at the village. I thought it was a great idea, though, and was curious about what the process would be like to implement this idea. The main objective of this project was to research whether or not it is possible or practical to have …

Wwu Spring Block Ta, Anna Friederich

College of the Environment Internship Reports

I think that I learned so much from being in this group, both at the western washington university level where I was with the faculty and the students and my fellow TA where I learned so much about natural history on different specific species as well as just generally wanting to come away with the knowledge around ways of being that students brought. As always, our indigenous partners are also a huge influence on me and the way that I exist in a space where they are hosting on the land but we are running the behind the scenes of …

Confronting Consumption - Undergraduate Thesis, Tera Ziemer

College of the Environment Internship Reports

This undergraduate thesis examines the factors driving personal consumption among students at Western Washington University and how their positioning within a larger community context influences thoughts, behaviors and feelings surrounding consumption. The research employs qualitative methods to tap into the subtleties and nuances of consumption as a personal act informed by one’s social context. Fifteen interviews were conducted with students at WWU in Spring 2023 to explore the relationship between values, action, and consumption patterns within the community. Three major themes emerged from the analysis: the Values Actions Gap, Conspicuous Sustainability, and Consuming Green to Consume Less.

College of the Environment Internship Reports

My work with the Washington Conservation Corp (WCC) was with a restoration crew sponsored by the Skagit River Systems Co-op. The organization does work in the Skagit river basin to restore salmon habitat. The focus of this work is on riparian areas, in the summer season which I had worked we primarily maintained sites where plantings had been done previously. This was done through brush cutting survival rings around young plants, as well as removing invasive species such as Himalayan blackberry and morning glory either through herbicide use or brush cutting. Hours worked with WCC were ten hours four days …

Urban Planner Associate Internship, Jasmine Fast

College of the Environment Internship Reports

Based on our review and analysis there are approximately 979 dwelling units that have been claimed as housing supply, but we believe are not achievable in the planning period. The tabulated number of dwelling units shown on the attached GIS map exhibits represents the number of units assigned to each property within the BLR land capacity worksheet (data reporting tool) after all the deductions prescribed in the BLR methodology are completed. All of which are within Single Family Zones. This represents approximately 23% of Bellingham’s Single Family Unit Capacity as presented on Exhibit 16 of the Buildable Lands Report.

Skagit County Planning and Development Services is responsible for all planning and development that occurs in the unincorporated portions of Skagit County. The building is at 1800 Continental Place Mount Vernon Washington and houses current and long-range planning, natural resources, public works, the fire marshal, and the County records department. It is ideal to have these entities working in the same building because it makes collaboration easy. For example, there were instances when someone either in current or long-range planning had a question regarding the environmental impact of a proposed development and could simply walk over to natural resources and …

Creative Environmental Strategist Intern, Mason White

College of the Environment Internship Reports

My goal with this job was to connect what I’ve learned in school with a marketable business to understand how to bring textbook ideas to real life. I genuinely believe that the environmental problems we face today are often an issue of our relationship with the earth, the future, and each other. So I was especially interested in communicating with people about sustainable innovation, and figuring out how to make the concept of material sciences understandable and exciting to everyday people.

Stress Levels In First Generation And Continuing Generation College Students, Alejandra L. Aroni Buiza Jan 2023

Stress Levels In First Generation And Continuing Generation College Students, Alejandra L. Aroni Buiza

Psychology | Senior Theses

This study evaluated the experience of the students who are their first in their families to attend college. First Generation College Students (FGCS) are disadvantaged as compared to their Continuing Generation College Student (CGCS) peers because there may be little family knowledge of how to manage a new academic system or how to balance school with outside demands, such as work, finances, and family responsibilities; these are all sources of stress. It was hypothesized that FGCS will have higher general stress scores than CGCS. The Perceived Stress Scale and College Experience Questionnaire (a measure of the amount of family support …

Of Dogs And Bonds, Jeffrey R. Stevens Jan 2023

Of Dogs And Bonds, Jeffrey R. Stevens

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

In four of Charles Darwin’s classic works (Darwin, 1859, 1868, 1871, 1872), the domestic dog (Canis familiaris or Canis lupus familiaris)1 featured prominently, offering key examples to illustrate his ideas about evolution, domestication, comparative behavior and cognition, and emotional expression. Darwin held a clear fondness for dogs, and when replying to letters detailing the “sagacity” of dogs, he remarked “I can believe almost anything about them” (Darwin, 2014). Despite the early interest in their behavior and cognition by a number of leading scientists, dogs were rarely subject to serious investigation as a study species for 150 years. …

Face Coverings Differentially Alter Valence Judgments Of Emotional Expressions, Nicholas R. Harp, Andrew T. Langbehn, Jeff T. Larsen, Paula M. Niedenthal, Maital Neta Jan 2023

Face Coverings Differentially Alter Valence Judgments Of Emotional Expressions, Nicholas R. Harp, Andrew T. Langbehn, Jeff T. Larsen, Paula M. Niedenthal, Maital Neta

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Face masks that prevent disease transmission obscure facial expressions, impairing nonverbal communication. We assessed the impact of lower (masks) and upper (sunglasses) face coverings on emotional valence judgments of clearly valenced (fearful, happy) and ambiguously valenced (surprised) expressions, the latter of which have both positive and negative meanings. Masks, but not sunglasses, impaired judgments of clearly valenced expressions compared to faces without coverings. Drift diffusion models revealed that lower, but not upper, face coverings slowed evidence accumulation and affected differences in non-judgment processes (i.e., stimulus encoding, response execution time) for all expressions. Our results confirm mask-interference effects in nonverbal communication. …

Elections And Post Traumatic Stress: Evidence From The 2020 U.S. Presidential Election, Timothy Fraser, Costas Panagopoulos, Kevin Smith

Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications

The 2020 U.S. presidential election saw rising political tensions among ordinary voters and political elites, with fears of election violence culminating in the January 6th riot. We hypothesized that the 2020 election might have been traumatic for some voters, producing measurable symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We also hypothesized that negative sentiment towards the opposing party correlates with PTSD. We measured PTSD with a modified PCL-5, a validated PTSD screener, for 573 individuals from a nationally representative YouGov sample. We modeled the association between affective polarization and PTSD, controlling for political, demographic, and psychological traits. We estimate that 12.5% …

Prospective Attitude About The Importance Of Planning Pregnancies Is Associated With Retrospective Attitude Toward A Specific Pregnancy, Arthur L. Greil, Karina M. Shreffler, Stacy M. Tiemeyer, Julia Mcquillan

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Several theories of fertility behavior assume that planning is important to women. Is this a reasonable assumption? To answer this question, the authors used the National Survey of Fertility Barriers. Among women with unsure or positive fertility intentions at wave 1, most (75 percent) agreed with the statement “It is important to plan my pregnancies.” Logistic regression, adjusted for control variables, indicated that fertility intentions are a distinct construct from pregnancy planning attitudes. Multinomial regression of retrospective pregnancy attitude three years later among a subsample of women who had pregnancies during that period indicated that women who felt that it …

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder And Identity: The Role Of Ego-Dystonicity, Andrea B. Mullin Jan 2023

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder And Identity: The Role Of Ego-Dystonicity, Andrea B. Mullin

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) has been linked to a dysmorphic construction of self that is closely tied to mental illness (Bhar & Kyrios, 2007). Although associations have been found, no study has determined the impact of OCD on one's self-perception, to better understand how to resolve patients' dysmorphic construction and fear of oneself. College students (N = 410; M = 20.60, SD = 4.27) completed an anonymous online survey for course credit. The survey consisted of a demographic questionnaire, the Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised (Foa et al., 2002), theEgo-Dystonicity Questionnaire (Purdon et al., 2007), and the Self-concept Identity Measure (Kaufman et …
