University-Industry-Collaborations In Egypt: Academics’ Perception Of Motivators And Success Factors, Ingy Ibrahim Saad Darwish
University-Industry-Collaborations In Egypt: Academics’ Perception Of Motivators And Success Factors, Ingy Ibrahim Saad Darwish
Theses and Dissertations
In today’s knowledge-based economies immense attention has been given to the links between industry and academia. Industries have increasingly realized the value from forging strong ties with universities and are constantly seeking strategic alliances in order to enhance their competitiveness and gain a stronger knowledge base. The Egyptian government has reaffirmed its intentions on boosting national innovation levels and has placed university-industry collaborations amongst its top priorities. While Egypt does have a considerably robust industrial sector, its potential in fostering innovation and technological development will remain hampered if policy makers remain unaware of the knowledge transfer channels in Egypt and …
Carving Spaces Of An Otherwise Within Urban Uncertainties On Sudanese People On The Move Creating Own Possibilities In Cairo, Iman Mohamed
Carving Spaces Of An Otherwise Within Urban Uncertainties On Sudanese People On The Move Creating Own Possibilities In Cairo, Iman Mohamed
Theses and Dissertations
With the increased urbanization of the world since the 1940s, people continue to be increasingly moving to cities. People are attracted to the city to access services and opportunities. However, the increased presence of persons on the move in the city comes with heightened bordering, augmented policing, and the involvement of more actors in the governance of people on the move. Against this, there are debates around understanding the urban space, its risks, and opportunities for all people dealing with it, including those on the move. This thesis thus looks at the urban space in Cairo that is uncertain, wherein …

Theses and Dissertations
The past two decades have witnessed an increasing number of armed conflicts, both inter- and intra-nationally, and an even more increasing number of multilateral military interventions without UN Security Council authorization. Central to the discussion of these interventions are the themes of humanitarianism and state sovereignty. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the relationship between humanitarian imperatives and principles of sovereignty within the context of armed conflict to better understand the tensions that have led to the current global outcomes. In so doing, it identifies how humanitarian principles, imperatives, and actions have affected the contemporary conception of state …

Navigating The Cairene Table: Food And Family Between What Is Ideal And What Is Real, Iman Afify
Navigating The Cairene Table: Food And Family Between What Is Ideal And What Is Real, Iman Afify
Theses and Dissertations
Our daily encounters with food, especially during our childhood, play a crucial role in shaping and informing our identity and our habitus. In this research, by using multimodal and auto ethnography, I argue that due to the guiding path that our senses carve for us, we make sense and contextualise our surroundings through our senses, and not only the five senses of vision, smell, taste, hearing, and touch, but also through our inner senses of time and temporality, and how time and memory play an important role in the registration of our surroundings through our bodies and senses. I am …

Municipal Fiber In The United States: A Financial Assessment, Christopher S. Yoo, Jesse Lambert, Timothy P. Pfenninger
Municipal Fiber In The United States: A Financial Assessment, Christopher S. Yoo, Jesse Lambert, Timothy P. Pfenninger
All Faculty Scholarship
Despite growing interest in broadband provided by municipally owned and operated fiber-to-the-home networks, the academic literature has yet to undertake a systematic assessment of these projects’ financial performance. To fill this gap, we utilize municipalities’ official reports to offer an empirical evaluation of the financial performance of every municipal fiber project in the U.S. operating in 2010 through 2019. An analysis of the actual performance of the resulting fifteen-project panel dataset reveals that none of the projects generated sufficient nominal cash flow in the short run to maintain solvency without infusions of additional cash from outside sources or debt relief. …
Facebook For Law Enforcement, Stephen Carlisle
Facebook For Law Enforcement, Stephen Carlisle
Certified Public Manager® Applied Research
This article introduces what some law enforcement agencies have done to mitigate trust issues by utilizing social media as a form of community policing. There is a silent majority out there that support law enforcement. As a pioneer of using Facebook as a platform for community policing, taking criticism from my law enforcement peers was unavoidable. However, these same peers would turn to Facebook shortly after for personal and professional use. The key is to reach out and to educate the public to help gain trust in law enforcement, and using modern social media platforms to reach the masses only …
Why We Should Reuse Wastewater, Bridget Sarver
Why We Should Reuse Wastewater, Bridget Sarver
Certified Public Manager® Applied Research
As population and industry grow, the need to reuse wastewater is growing. Aquifers are often the dominant water supplies to surrounding areas. The levels of those aquifers are declining each year. Water loss affects many things like water wells, lakes, and rivers. Lakes and rivers that are used as water sources are seeing a decline in levels. Low water levels and drought occur because of the changing water cycle. Heavy rain and runoff can help refill lakes and rivers; however precipitation does not always fall back on the area that it evaporated from. By reusing wastewater, we will be saving …

Leadership Through Budgeting: Controlling Taxes And Increasing Services, Tony Sims
Certified Public Manager® Applied Research
Local budgets are the key responsibility of elected and appointed leaders, as are ultimate control over how tax dollars are allocated, and which services are provided to the citizens. Nowhere else is leadership more important than during budget preparation. However, local budgeting is typically more an annual event than an ongoing efficient and effective process. By implementing a budgeting process and preparing a budget in accordance with the criteria required by the Government Finance Officers Association’s (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award Program and earning the award, local governments can create more efficient and effective operations, improve public trust, and have …

Studying Female Engineers' Experiences In The Egyptian Labor Market, Nada Abdelhay
Studying Female Engineers' Experiences In The Egyptian Labor Market, Nada Abdelhay
Theses and Dissertations
With an aim to investigate and analyze the active participation of female engineers in the Egyptian labor market, this qualitative research study argues that gender-biased cultures embedded within formal educational and employment engineering institutions marginalize and undermine the representation of highly educated female engineers. Based on women’s shared experiences, it becomes apparent that their personal interests are not sufficient to ensure an engineering career. Other determinants–primarily in the form of impending challenges–during the pre-university, university and employment stages of life impact women’s lived experiences. On the one hand, challenges faced before graduation include: a) gender-based stigmas and stereotypes surrounding specific …

Incarcerated Men’S Perceptions Of The Prison Environment: An Exploratory Study, Melissa J. Stacer
Incarcerated Men’S Perceptions Of The Prison Environment: An Exploratory Study, Melissa J. Stacer
Midwest Social Sciences Journal
The punitiveness of prisons is considered necessary for deterrence, but there is also a societal expectation that prisons will also rehabilitate. Scholars have examined whether prisons are ideal environments for rehabilitation from the perspective of the inmate, though this work largely focuses on measurement issues related to the scales used to measure offenders’ perceptions. The current research expands upon this by asking a sample of 154 incarcerated men from three different correctional facilities in the Midwestern United States what they think about their current correctional environment using the Prison Environment Scale (PES) and focusing on the answers provided by those …

Drinking Motives As Potential Mediators Of Associations Between Loneliness And Alcohol Use And Consequences Among College Students, Faith A. Shank
Drinking Motives As Potential Mediators Of Associations Between Loneliness And Alcohol Use And Consequences Among College Students, Faith A. Shank
Theses and Dissertations
College is a pivotal time when many individuals begin to cultivate social relationships and engage in heavy drinking practices, resulting in alcohol-related consequences. Two potential factors associated with college drinking behaviors are loneliness and drinking motivation. Loneliness has mixed associations with drinking behaviors, meanwhile, drinking motives have clear associations with drinking behaviors. Prior research suggests that individuals experiencing loneliness are more likely to drink to cope, yet the existing research examining loneliness, drinking motives, and drinking behaviors is limited. Thus, this study aims to examine associations between 1) loneliness and drinking behaviors; 2) loneliness and drinking motives; 3) and whether …

A Simplified Model For The Intermediate Structure Of Strong Fire Whirls, Forman A. Williams
A Simplified Model For The Intermediate Structure Of Strong Fire Whirls, Forman A. Williams
Progress in Scale Modeling, an International Journal
A model is described for the overall structure of intense fire whirls, based on a spatially evolving vortex, with circulation enhancement driven by the axial acceleration of low-density gas in the core through the axial pressure gradient. The axial acceleration increases the entrainment rate into the core which, through mass conservation, increases the circulation if the angle between the tangential and radial velocity components remains fixed. The two-zone model employs general balance equations for regions inside and outside a cylinder of fixed radius, each inviscid, the inside region being presumed to have a constant density small compared with the (constant) …

The Covid-19 Pandemic Led To The Redesign Of Library Resources And Services: Turning Crisis Into An Opportunity, Dr. Rajender Kumar
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This paper describes the opportunities to redesign library resources and services during and after the COVID-19 crisis that has affected the lives of billions of people around the world. During this crisis, Universities, colleges, and schools suspended their normal teaching and learning activities. Crisis can sometimes transform challenges into opportunities. A crisis can be turned into an opportunity if new ways of looking, thinking, and responding are embraced. A result of COVID-19's pandemic outbreaks provided an enormous opportunity to change the information-providing way. Thus, libraries can take it as an opportunity to redesign their information resources and services. By redesigning …

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) has invested significant energy over the last 20 years in building workforce capacity across the country’s academic libraries. The global pandemic has given this work a whole new intensity as directors find themselves seeking to fill large numbers of vacancies in a highly competitive market, to encourage more candidates from equity-deserving groups to apply, to prepare both new and long-serving staff members to take on new kinds of work, and to create workplace environments that encourage staff to stay.
This paper will update the international community on a number of CARL initiatives that …

Out Of The Darkness: How Can Librarians' Skills Help Us To Change Our Organization?, Frederic G.A. Brodkom
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
In 2020-2021, the libraries of the Catholic University of Louvain have been confronted with major challenges: new objectives for providing support to research (RDM, …), the development of new learning centers, the announced retirement of our Chief Librarian, the installation of a new ILS platform, and the pandemic which has involved new services for faculties (loan of co-modal teaching material, click & collect, …). Too many challenges together and it soon became clear that the structure of our organization, which had remained unchanged since 2001, was not adapted to meet these challenges. For our librarians, facing the changes was like …
Anatomy Of A Renovation, Michael Crumpton
Anatomy Of A Renovation, Michael Crumpton
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The seeds of innovation are changing how libraries use their space and plan for future remodels, renovations or expansions, especially post-COVID. Examples of this range from converting space from materials storage to user space needs along with technology enhancements. Technology driven initiatives that impact space usually start as small ideas or seeds of innovative initiatives, such as makerspaces, but are growing into digital media centers, video and imaging rooms, gaming labs and augmented reality spaces.
This presentation shares a case study approach to a master space planning project but goes beyond the typical consultant led project into developing a boarder …
