Out Of The Darkness: How Can Librarians' Skills Help Us To Change Our Organization?, Frederic G.A. Brodkom

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

In 2020-2021, the libraries of the Catholic University of Louvain have been confronted with major challenges: new objectives for providing support to research (RDM, …), the development of new learning centers, the announced retirement of our Chief Librarian, the installation of a new ILS platform, and the pandemic which has involved new services for faculties (loan of co-modal teaching material, click & collect, …). Too many challenges together and it soon became clear that the structure of our organization, which had remained unchanged since 2001, was not adapted to meet these challenges. For our librarians, facing the changes was like …

Anatomy Of A Renovation, Michael Crumpton Jun 2022

Anatomy Of A Renovation, Michael Crumpton

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The seeds of innovation are changing how libraries use their space and plan for future remodels, renovations or expansions, especially post-COVID. Examples of this range from converting space from materials storage to user space needs along with technology enhancements. Technology driven initiatives that impact space usually start as small ideas or seeds of innovative initiatives, such as makerspaces, but are growing into digital media centers, video and imaging rooms, gaming labs and augmented reality spaces.

This presentation shares a case study approach to a master space planning project but goes beyond the typical consultant led project into developing a boarder …

Essays On Conflict Mediation, Ali Kamranzadeh Jun 2022

Essays On Conflict Mediation, Ali Kamranzadeh

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

An important barrier to conflict resolution is asymmetric information. That is adversaries have private information about their objectives, resources, and strengths during the conflict and have incentives to misrepresent this information during the negotiations. Third-party institutions, like mediators, can help adversaries to reach an agreement by making a peace proposal. In this thesis, I explore the implication of asymmetric information of players to the design of an optimal peace proposal by a mediator.

Chapter 2, co-authored with Charles Zheng, studies a problem of conflict mediation where a mediator proposes a split of a good between two ex-ante identical contestants thereby …

Evaluating The Potential Of Genotype And Feeding Strategy On Reducing Age At Slaughter In Dairy Beef Systems, Jamie O'Driscoll Jun 2022

Evaluating The Potential Of Genotype And Feeding Strategy On Reducing Age At Slaughter In Dairy Beef Systems, Jamie O'Driscoll

ORBioM (Open Research BioSciences Meeting)

Background

Agriculture is the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in Ireland with enteric fermentation from ruminants accounting for 58% of Ireland’s methane emissions. Research has shown that beef cattle excrete on average, approximately 230g of methane per day, if the national slaughter age reduced by one month, methane output would reduce by over 12,000 tonnes of methane annually. Therefore, a reduction in age at slaughter will lessen the contribution of Irish agriculture to global emissions and enhance its social acceptance and competitiveness.

Aims

The objective of this study is to investigate the potential of reducing age at slaughter through …

Evaluating The Impact Of A Safe Exercise Training Workshop On Knowledge And Self-Efficacy To Manage Dysfunctional Exercise Among Eating Disorders Clinicians At Alsana Eating Disorders Center, Danika A. Quesnel Jun 2022

Evaluating The Impact Of A Safe Exercise Training Workshop On Knowledge And Self-Efficacy To Manage Dysfunctional Exercise Among Eating Disorders Clinicians At Alsana Eating Disorders Center, Danika A. Quesnel

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Engaging in dysfunctional exercise (DEX) is detrimental to eating disorders (EDs) prognosis, although common amongst clients. Though nutritionally supported exercise can improve ED treatment outcomes, without negatively impacting weight restoration, clinicians remain hesitant to address DEX, perhaps due to a lack of information and training. The current study examined the effects of a Safe Exercise at Every Stage (SEES) training on clinician knowledge and self-efficacy in managing DEX in ED treatment. Eating disorders clinicians completed measures before (n = 96) and after (n = 44) SEES training to assess their knowledge and self-efficacy around treating DEX, with a …

Doctoral Students’ Research Data Management Competencies Based On The Quality Of Their Data Management Plans, Jukka Rantasaari Jun 2022

Doctoral Students’ Research Data Management Competencies Based On The Quality Of Their Data Management Plans, Jukka Rantasaari

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Many international, national, and institutional principles and policies as well as a growing number of funders and publishers recommend or mandate researchers to write data management plans (DMPs) or share the underlying research data upon which the research articles are based. At the core of these alignments is to enhance research transparency, reproducibility and reliability, and the reuse of research data by bringing the data findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR). To help researchers fulfill this task, they need education in research data management (RDM).

The goal of this preliminary paper is to find out the quality of the DMPs …

Role And Opportunity Of Library In The Context Of Open Science, Jitka Dobbersteinova, Jozef Dzivak Jun 2022

Role And Opportunity Of Library In The Context Of Open Science, Jitka Dobbersteinova, Jozef Dzivak

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The role of libraries on Open Science has been recognised and discussed at multiple fora and have been accepted publicly by international organisations and stakeholders. It is natural, as academic libraries are already supporting a knowledge sharing and build a common good. In Slovakia, the National Research Library plays a key role in open science movement as we work as the national body strategically coordinating open science issues accross Slovakia. We participated very actively in the bottom-up project, which is Slovak National strategy for Open Science adopted by the Slovak Government in 2021. The Strategy for years 2021 – 2028 …

Integral Conversion: A Catholic Pedagogical Framework For Teaching Environmental Sustainability And Ecological Citizenship From Japan, Michael R. Polito

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

As Vatican efforts expand to move awareness of environmental sustainability from the peripheries to the center of public consciousness, Catholic schools face the challenge of instilling in the next generation of graduates a distinctly Catholic sense of ecological citizenship. To this end, Catholic educators are faced with the challenge of presenting complex environmental problems in a manner that honors both the data of science and the transcendental worldview the Church proclaims. This paper offers a framework for examining environmental sustainability issues in the classroom from the perspective of Catholic social teaching. The author’s professional context of teaching Catholic social ethics …

The main aim of the present study was to predict the growth of the food spoilage yeast Debaryomyces hansenii by multivariate data analysis (MVDA) using temperature, pH and NaCl concentration as growth parameters. Growth of five strains of D. hansenii (DHI,DHII, DHIII, DHIV and DHV) was measured as optical density at 620 nm (OD620) at different values of temperature, pH and NaCl concentrations. It was found that salt was the most important factor, which affects yeast growth followed by temperature. The growth of all yeast strains was reduced by increasing salt concentration and decreasing temperature. On the other hand, pH …

Performance ratio is one of the indicators used to describe the effectiveness of the PV systems. The sustainability of the PV system year after year as well as its reliability can be checked by measuring the performance ratio each year. This indicator will also enable us to carry out a comparison between the performances of different PV systems. In this paper, the performance ratios for five PV systems installed on the roof tops of some of PTUK university buildings have been calculated on monthly and yearly basis. The analysis has been carried out using the available data (energy production and …
