The Role Of Adverse Childhood Experiences And Associated Features On Criminality In Emerging Adults, Jessica L. Harangozo Jun 2022

The Role Of Adverse Childhood Experiences And Associated Features On Criminality In Emerging Adults, Jessica L. Harangozo

ETD Archive

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are associated with a variety of negative outcomes, including criminal and violent behaviors (Milaniak & Widom, 2015). Prior research indicates that antisocial personality traits such as callousness may play a mediating effect on the relationship between ACEs and criminality (Baglivio et al., 2020). Further, the developmental period in which childhood maltreatment occurs may be related to greater criminality (Thornberry et al., 2010). This research project aims to examine how ACEs relate to criminality in emerging adults, with consideration of antisocial personality traits and the developmental period of experiencing childhood abuse. This study hypothesizes: (A) Both higher …

Fair Use Or Transformative Work? Music, Figure Skating, And Copyright, It Depends…, Kerri Bottorff

Scholarly Communication Brown Bag Series

Have you ever been curious about how figure skaters choose their music? Do they reach out to artists directly and ask for permission? Does U.S. Figure Skating, our National Governing Body, or our local member clubs, have protections or agreements in place? Or are we all just happy little copyright violators? Say it with me…it depends!

Resilience Is Low Among Both Military And Non-Military Populations With Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Kelsey Roberts, Janet Wilmoth, Shannon M. Monnat Jun 2022

Resilience Is Low Among Both Military And Non-Military Populations With Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Kelsey Roberts, Janet Wilmoth, Shannon M. Monnat

Population Health Research Brief Series

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affects the lives of 12 million people in the United States. While commonly thought of in relation to military personnel and veterans, PTSD is also common among the general public. Resilience - the ability to cope with stressful events - is essential for recovering from PTSD. This data slice uses data from the National Wellbeing Survey to examine resilience among U.S. working-age adults with and without PTSD by their relationship to the military. Results show that those with PTSD have less resilience than those who have not experienced PTSD. In addition, those with military experience are …

Rumination And The Gut Microbiome:Effects Of A Brief Mindfulness Intervention, Moeka Kamiya Jun 2022

Rumination And The Gut Microbiome:Effects Of A Brief Mindfulness Intervention, Moeka Kamiya

Lawrence University Honors Projects

Recent work has found relationships between the gut microbiota—the community of organisms that inhabit an animal’s digestive tract—and psychological health. In particular, the gut microbiota of individuals with depression shows a different genetic composition to those without depression. Thus, this study explored how rumination, a predictor of depression, and gut microbiota composition are correlated to detect possible gut microbiota alterations present before depression develops. This study also examined whether a brief mindfulness mobile application intervention, which has been shown to reduce rumination, can increase beneficial bacteria abundance and decrease pathogenic bacteria abundance. Participants were 16 first-year students. They engaged in …

Evaluating The Moderating Effect Of Gender On Adolescents’ Internalizing Symptoms Throughout The First Wave Of Covid-19, Naomi C. Curran Jun 2022

Evaluating The Moderating Effect Of Gender On Adolescents’ Internalizing Symptoms Throughout The First Wave Of Covid-19, Naomi C. Curran

Lawrence University Honors Projects

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic sent adolescents home to shelter-in-place in relative social isolation, potentially disrupting support networks, and compromising youth mental health. This may particularly impact already vulnerable groups, such as girls and transgender/gender diverse (TGD) adolescents, who experience a greater risk for depression and anxiety disorders than their peers. The present study investigated the moderating effect of gender on adolescents’ internalizing symptoms throughout the first wave of COVID-19. I hypothesized that the onset of the pandemic would increase TGD adolescents’ internalizing symptoms to a greater degree than their cisgender peers, and girls’ internalizing symptoms more than boys’. Data …

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines contributing factors that affect female underrepresentation in management, in the United States (U.S.), within the U.S. workforce. The primary variables of interest are intrinsic motivation, work life balance and organizational climate support, which have typically not been reviewed in depth, in prior research.

Using a framework of varied theoretical approaches, this research studies the relationship between the above-mentioned constructs and gender effect, as related to interest in career advancement opportunities and female leadership underrepresentation within organizations.

The results of this study further validate existing research and highlights the importance of establishing programs, geared towards shifting mindsets and …

Evaluating The Application Of The Collective Impact Model In Collaborative Health Efforts: A Case Study On Weight Of The Fox Valley, 2013-2019, Natalie J. Lamonto

Lawrence University Honors Projects

The Collective Impact (CI) Model is a relatively new collaborative model commonly used in community-based health efforts. However, there is minimal data on the effectiveness of this model in community health organizations. With the conclusion of Weight of the Fox Valley (WOTFV), a local health effort adhering to the CI Model, in 2019; I set out to examine the application of the CI Model in a real-world setting and its effectiveness in WOTFV. Through archival research and qualitative interviews with former WOTFV members, I use WOTFV as a case study of the CI Model to interpret how the model promoted …

Emergency medical service (EMS) professionals have a stressful vocation, inarguably worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic, which affects their mental health and makes them a vulnerable population warranting further study. However, to date, no published research has compared non-treatment and treatment-seeking EMS professionals in the same greater metropolitan area. In this study, we examined differences and similarities among the non-treatment-seeking EMS professionals (n = 57) from a local EMS agency and treatment-seeking EMS personnel (n = 53) from a non-profit community treatment center on six assessment instruments that measure attachment avoidance, attachment anxiety, resilience, depression, generalized anxiety, posttraumatic stress …

Same Game, Different Rules: Pointillist Imperialism And The New Cartography Of Great Power Competition, Andrew Jesse Shaughnessy Jun 2022

Same Game, Different Rules: Pointillist Imperialism And The New Cartography Of Great Power Competition, Andrew Jesse Shaughnessy

Dissertations and Theses

For centuries, "Great Powers" competed for global hegemony not only through building up military strength and amassing wealth, but through the formal acquisition of distant lands, conquered and folded into their borders. Today, core states continue to vie for global power, but no longer exert formal control or sovereignty over less powerful states. So how has the nature of great power competition in peripheral states changed? Most scholars studying great power competition measure power in terms of military and economic resources, often failing to account for a third, crucial dimension in international power politics: the impact of distributed networks of …

Learning From The Past To Guide The Future: Partnership In Practice, Chris L. Moselen Jun 2022

Learning From The Past To Guide The Future: Partnership In Practice, Chris L. Moselen

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

After the development of a library vision and strategy in 2017, and a restructure in 2018, we had little idea of the impact that one of the statements in our vision was going to have on our cultural journey for the next 5 years – and beyond. The statement “Te Tiriti o Waitangi underpins all we do” was a bold claim which had to be honoured. Te Tiriti o Waitangi (The Treaty of Waitangi) is a treaty signed in 1840 between Māori, the indigenous people of New Zealand, and the Crown (the Queen of England and the British Government). In …

Change-Readiness Scale For Library Managers: Development And Analysis, Christine M. Abrigo, Efren Jr Torres

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

This study focuses on developing a scale that encompasses aspects of readiness to change by library management in dealing with the next normal in libraries. It investigates measuring change readiness in terms of library service operations, workflows, administration, programs, and spaces, which can give an overall view of a library institution's preparedness to meet new roles and expectations. While there were several readiness-for-change instruments constructed for various organizations and institutions, this study uses a two-phase approach, attempting to design an instrument and validate the items in this scale. The scale, referred to as Change-Readiness Instrument for Library Managers (CRILM), was …

Reckoning With Organizational Identity And Innovation In Research Libraries, Neil Romanosky Jun 2022

Reckoning With Organizational Identity And Innovation In Research Libraries, Neil Romanosky

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Who or what an organization thinks it is—its sense of identity—greatly informs the choices it makes. Yet an organization’s identity, which provides coherence and stability, may constrain or enable an organization’s capacity for innovation, which at its core is about doing new or different things. This paper explores the dynamics of organizational identity and innovation through a qualitative study involving leaders from eleven U.S. and Canadian academic research libraries—organizations and a profession that are experiencing an abundance of change and identity threats. A major finding of this research is that the very process of scoping and defining innovation can enable …

Decolonizing Your Library: Metadata That Empowers, Kelley Rowan, Annia Gonzalez Jun 2022

Decolonizing Your Library: Metadata That Empowers, Kelley Rowan, Annia Gonzalez

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

This article explores the impetus, progress, and challenges encountered in developing and managing a library-wide decolonial metadata project at Florida International University (FIU) Libraries. The goal of this initiative is to develop inclusive metadata within our digital collections and finding aids that represent the communities we serve and to develop a metadata remediation plan that ameliorates the harm done by antiquated language. In thinking about the current metadata in our collections, we are engaging a post-colonial mindset that incorporates methods of coping with the ongoing oppression of vulnerable communities. In contrast, our metadata analysis and remediation process is focused on …

Digital Fluency For Open Educational Resources: The Active Role Of Libraries In Establishing Oer In Germany's Higher Education Sector, Margaret Plank, Britta Beutnagel Jun 2022

Digital Fluency For Open Educational Resources: The Active Role Of Libraries In Establishing Oer In Germany's Higher Education Sector, Margaret Plank, Britta Beutnagel

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Free access to education, information and knowledge is a declared educational policy goal that all state universities in Germany strive to achieve. Open Educational Resources (OER) make an important contribution to this, as their use is open to all teaching staff and learners. The development, use and distribution of OER is currently focused by several government funding grants, but still has not fully arrived in the country’s educational practices. Reasons for this include the fact that dealing with OER requires sound knowledge much of which relates to copyright and licensing law. In addition, for the technical design and provision of …

Police, Ice, And Knox County: A Timeline Of The 287(G) And Detention Bed Contracts From 2017-2021, Taylor Dempsey

Select or Award-Winning Individual Scholarship

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) continues to heavily collaborate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), in spite of the consistent community opposition and ongoing legal ramifications that have resulted from Knox County’s 287(g) and detention bed contracts. Research on these programs and Knox County’s immigration enforcement involvement has largely focused on the logistics of enforcement mechanisms, the racism and xenophobia that construct the programs, and the legal challenges Knox County has faced as a result of their execution of the contracts. This creative project accumulates this research and utilizes public records received from Public Records Act and Freedom of …

Reimagining Info 101: A Tale Of Revisions And New Beginnings, April P. Akins, Casey L. Anthony, Jean Thrift

South Carolina Libraries

Realized that video you love showing in class is nearly as old as your students now? We’ve been there. Lander University librarians spent this summer collaborating to redesign INFO 101, our 1-credit information literacy course. The goals were to keep the course fresh, useful, effective, and synchronized across instructors and delivery methods. This initiative included reformatting into an eight-week schedule offered twice per semester, moving to a new textbook, establishing a shared Blackboard sandbox in the university’s recommended online course template, and ditching the final project. Results will be discussed from the Fall 2021 sections taught face-to-face and online.

Duration Of Employment And Interpersonal Conflict Experienced In South Carolina Academic Libraries, Maggie Albro Jun 2022

Duration Of Employment And Interpersonal Conflict Experienced In South Carolina Academic Libraries, Maggie Albro

South Carolina Libraries

Interpersonal conflicts occur across all relationships at all levels. Unresolved interpersonal conflicts can lead to bullying, which has been under continued exploration in the workplace since the 1990s (Keashly & Neumann, 2010). The longer someone is employed at an institution, the more time they will have to experience interpersonal conflict in their work relationships. This study uses Harvey, Blouin, & Stout’s (2006) Interpersonal Conflict Scale to examine the relationship between duration of employment and the level of interpersonal conflict experienced by South Carolina academic librarians. The results of this study indicate there is a low level of interpersonal conflict experienced …
