Body Mass Index In Female First-Year Students Of Full-Time Studies At The Academy Of Physical Education And Sport In Gdansk: Reality, Self-Evaluation, Dreams, Ewa Wojtowicz
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: An image on one’s body is an important component of one’s mental welfare. Scientific reports suggest that girls and women have a tendency to evaluate themselves through the prism of physical appearance and gender expectations influenced by cultural and unrealistic standards of beauty (slim, very lean, boy-like silhouette). The purpose of this study was to find out the opinions of young, healthy and physically active women about their bodies (BMI self-evaluation) and the ones connected with their dreams (the most satisfactory BMI) and reality (anthropometric measurements). Materials and methods: The statistical analysis of the data was based on anthropometric …

Taijiquan In The Prevention Of Symptoms Of Parkinson’S Disease – A Comparative Analysis Of Research Results, Malgorzata Kawa, Mateusz Kajnat, Krzysztof Klukowski
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
The primary symptom in Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive disorder of motor functions. Despite constant pharmacological treatment, the patient’s daily functioning ability diminishes, leading to deterioration in the quality of life. Clinical and experimental studies show that systematic use of physical exercise delays the build-up of motor impairments in Parkinson’s disease by prolonging patients’ functional independence and thereby improving their quality of life. Systematic physical activity, such as resistance, balance, and stretching exercises (elements of aerobics, Nordic walking, dance, tai chi, or the use of Taijiquan martial arts), is considered as possibly useful therapy in symptomatic treatment of PD. …

Gerrymandering And The Limits Of Representative Democracy, Kai Hao Yang, Alexander K. Zentefis
Gerrymandering And The Limits Of Representative Democracy, Kai Hao Yang, Alexander K. Zentefis
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We assess the capacity of gerrymandering to undermine the will of the people in a representative democracy. Citizens have political positions represented on a spectrum, and electoral maps separate people into districts. We show that unrestrained gerrymandering can severely distort the composition of a legislature, potentially leading half the population to lose all representation of their views. This means that, under majority rule in the congress, gerrymandering enables politicians to enact any legislation of their choice as long as it falls within the interquartile range of the political spectrum. Just as worrisome, gerrymandering can rig any legislation to pass instead …

Accountability As A Key Virtue In Mental Health And Human Flourishing, John R. Peteet, Charlotte Vanoyen-Witvliet, C. Stephen Evans

We propose that accountability plays an implicit, important, and relatively unexamined role in psychiatry. People generally think of accountability as a relation in which one party is held accountable by another. In this paper, we examine accountability as a virtue, drawing on philosophy, psychiatry, and psychology to examine what it means to welcome being accountable in an excellent way that promotes flourishing. When people manifest accountability as a virtue, they are both responsive to others they owe a response, and they are responsible for their attitudes and actions in light of these relationships. Psychiatric treatment often aims to correct disordered …

The Labors Of Professional Wrestling: The Dream, The Drive, And Debility, Brooks Oglesby
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study centers and examines the laboring body of the professional wrestler as it moves and works through professional wrestling training. I put forth debility as a theoretical framework to naming and understanding the ways that long-term bodily wear and early death becomes an acceptable cost of doing business for the wrestling industry. Dreams of achieving wealth, fame, and stability while escaping precarity and obscurity draw fans toward joining the industry, and these dreams work to maintain a working culture that takes for granted the ways that the wrestler’s body is marked for disposability, wearing down, and early death. I …

Grey’S Anatomy And End Of Life Ethics, Sean Micheal Swenson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this qualitative study, I analyze three episodes of the prime-time television medical drama Grey’s Anatomy to explore how the show stages conversations of end of life.
