Illustrating Ensemble Predictability Across Scales Associated With The 13–15 February 2019 Atmospheric River Event, Chad W. Hecht, Allison C. Michaelis, Andrew C. Martin, Jason M. Cordeira, Forest Cannon, F. Martin Ralph

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

The “Valentine’s Day” atmospheric river (AR) event that affected a majority of California during 13–15 February 2019 ranked as an AR3 (Ralph et al. 2019) along most of the California coast and reached AR4 intensity in Southern California. The strong onshore flow and dynamically favorable characteristics of the Valentine’s Day AR produced both an intense and long-duration precipitation event resulting in widespread hydrometeorological impacts across California. Palomar Observatory in northern San Diego County observed >10 in. (>254 mm) of precipitation in 24 h, the highest 24-h accumulation since record keeping began in 1943 (Hatchet et al. 2020

Digital And Spatial Humanities Mapping: Eurasia-Pacific Early Trade And Belief Linkages, Igor Sitnikov, David Blundell

Monsoon: South Asian Studies Association Journal

The Eurasia-Pacific is a dynamic region of rapid economic growth, cultural awareness, natural resource exploration, and military buildup. The concept of the region is relatively new, featuring contested vast areas of geo-resource space of numerous cultures and languages. The current findings in anthropology and archaeology and even its more specific subfields such as folklore are important contribution to the understanding of periodic environmental changes and technical innovations were the main forces of transformations in social structures that have determined the mechanisms and levels of cross-cultural trade activity across the region. We have traced early trade and belief linkages across Eurasia-Pacific …

Convenience Or Reckless Spending? How Mobile Payment Apps Can Help College Students Manage Their Money, Mikayla Reed, Cecilia Brooks

Undergraduate Research Conference

Mobile payment service (MPS) apps are often used because they are convenient and easy to use. However, some people may not understand how MPS use could impact day-to-day finances or long-term financial well-being. This study seeks to explore the use of MPS apps among college students. It is hypothesized that MPS app use is related to factors such as ease of use, convenience, and financial behaviors, such as monitoring spending or paying bills on time. In the fall of 2021, 122 college students from the Southeastern United States responded to an online Qualtrics questionnaire related to preferences among MPS apps, …

Iron Metabolism And Hepcidin Concentration In Teenagers Before And After Exercise In Relation To The Hfe Gene Status, Barbara Kaczorowska-Hac, Marcin Luszczyk, Jedrzej Antosiewicz, Jan Jacek Kaczor

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

Background: ‪The aim of the study was to compare the influence of exercise on iron metabolism and hepcidin concentration between carriers of His63Asp mutation (H63D polymorphism) and wild type HFE gene males. Iron is an essential micronutrient required for various biological processes. Systemic iron homeostasis is maintained in a hormone-like negative feedback mechanism by the 25-amino acid peptide hepcidin. Hepcidin controls duodenal iron absorption and iron recycling from senescent erythrocytes using tissue macrophages through the down-regulation of the sole known iron cell exporter, ferroportin-1. Exercise may induce an inflammatory response that leads to changes in iron metabolism. Material and methods: …

The Place Of Bodily Asceticism In A Nation’S Social Structure, Andrzej Pawlucki Mar 2022

The Place Of Bodily Asceticism In A Nation’S Social Structure, Andrzej Pawlucki

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

The hypothesis to be verified explains why bodily asceticism is excluded, owing to the influence of the ideologist, from the system of public health in the structure of a liberal cratocracy, in which reason is the good of the authority for its own sake. In the structure of national society, the system of bodily asceticism is raised to the status of community good. Despite the blocking of the connectivity of the system of bodily asceticism to the social structure, academic gymnasions survived the collapse of the state. Each of them independently excused itself with the idealess reason of the market …

Obesity has become a major health challenge in children. Fundamental movement skills(FMS) are suggested to have an important role for being physically active and decreasing the risk of obesity. This systematic review aimed to give an overview of studies providing evidence for a relationship between FMS and the weight status in children. A systematic search of five electronic databases (MEDLINE (PubMed), SportDiscus, ERIC, PsycInfo and SCOPUS) was conducted in January 2015. Studies examining associations between FMS and weight status in children aged 3–12 years were included. The final sample included 12 cross-sectional studies. Seven studies found statistically significant inverse association …

Pedagogical and educational institutions play an important role in health education. The proposed systemic principles should account for biological, environmental and cultural factors that determine the health of children and adolescents. Young people’s individual needs should constitute the framework of educational policy in the prevention of obesity and overweight. An analysis of health education practice in the Polish educational system indicates that the adopted measures, their practical applications and educational goals are adequate. Despite the above, the proposed systemic solutions are not always deployed or correctly implemented by the responsible institutions at various levels of local or social governance. The …

Posture Of Adolescent Male Handball Players Compared To Non-Athletes, Malgorzata Grabara Mar 2022

Posture Of Adolescent Male Handball Players Compared To Non-Athletes, Malgorzata Grabara

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

Background: The aim of the present study was to assess the posture and somatic parameters in adolescent male handball players compared to non-athletes and determine whether a relationship exists between the posture and the volume of training and/or its frequency. Material/Methods: Sixty-eight adolescent male handball players and sixty-nine non-athletes aged 15–18 were examined. The posture was evaluated by the moiré method. Results: Handball players exhibited smaller and less frequent asymmetries compared to the nonathletes. Statistically significant differences were found in the position of shoulder blades (p < 0.05) and pelvic alignment in the frontal (p < 0.001) and transverse (p < 0.05) planes. The spinal shape in the sagittal plane did not differentiate the training subjects from nonathletes. The study also revealed weak correlations between the training period and a deviation of the spinous processes (r = 0.25), a symmetry of the shoulder blades (r = 0.25), and an inclination angle of the thoracolumbar segment (r = -0.26). No correlations were observed between the training frequency and posture parameters. Conclusions: It can be concluded that despite the predominance of asymmetric elements, handball training does not negatively affect the posture in the frontal and transverse planes.
