"This Ain't Dances With Salmon": Native American Tropes In Dime Novels And Western Film Referencing Dances With Wolves, Jennifer K. Melton

Communication Theses

Too many White Savior films are causing a loss in translation from Brown and Black people to tell their stories. Hollywood was built on systemic racism, much like the United States; however, beginning in the early 1900s was when Hollywood became a prominent film industry, it allowed Jay Silverheels and Stepin Fetchit to portray their race of character. Before Hollywood there were dime novels and Western shows, which at times did not portray these races in favorable light. Hollywood, dime novels, and Western shows from the era of Buffalo Bill are the reasons why there is White saviorism, even in …

Three Essays In Labor Economics, Huong Thi Ngoc Axelrod

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation studies two topics in labor economics: the distribution of earnings and the effect of social networks on starting wage.

Chapter 1, co-authored with Professor Hugo Jales, evaluates theoretical models of the distribution of earnings. The shape of the distribution of earnings in a country is informative about income inequality in that country. In most countries, the distribution of earnings is asymmetric and skewed to the right. What are the sources of this right-skewness? All major theories of the distribution of earnings aim at explaining this stylized fact and shedding light on the mechanism giving rise to this feature …

Risk Perception And Coping Strategies Among Direct Support Professionals In The Age Of Covid-19., Johanna Loporto, Kelly E. Spina

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

The spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) across the globe and its associated morbidity and mortality has impacted and challenged society in many ways, which resulted in adapting to a new way of life. One underrecognized and unaddressed area is the mental health of essential employees providing services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Direct support professionals (DSPs) serve an important function in the daily supervision and care of clients with IDD. It is not clear, however, how these essential workers perceived their own risk of contracting COVID-19 while working during this pandemic. Our research presents results of a …

Contesting Erasure: The Museu Da Maré And The Right To The City In Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, Pamela Katia Sertzen Aug 2021

Contesting Erasure: The Museu Da Maré And The Right To The City In Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, Pamela Katia Sertzen

Dissertations - ALL

Rapid growth in cities of the Global South has precipitated urban inequalities, particularly the urban and social exclusion of low-income city residents. Right to the city scholars have investigated claims to urban space but have not fully considered the role of museums and the politics of memory as central to the debate about contesting erasure in low-income areas. While Latin American memory studies scholars have analyzed traumatic events such as dictatorships and civil wars in the region and memorialization practices that evolved post-trauma, they have not yet taken into account contested favela memories and their role in the right to …

The Case For Intersectionality: An Intersectional Look At Disability In The Labor Market, Jennifer D. Brooks Aug 2021

The Case For Intersectionality: An Intersectional Look At Disability In The Labor Market, Jennifer D. Brooks

Dissertations - ALL

While approximately 10% of adults ages 18 to 64 living in the United States identify as having a disability, workers with disabilities make up only 3% of the labor force (Livermore and Schimmel Hyde 2020; Paul et al. 2020). When compared to their non-disabled counterparts, those with disabilities have lower employment rates and earnings, are more likely to work in precarious and low wage jobs and report higher levels of workplace discrimination (BLS 2020; Maroto and Pettinicchio 2014b; Robert and Harlan 2006). Yet, recent evidence suggests that disabled people's labor market disadvantages may be disproportionately experienced by those with multiple …

The Effectiveness Of The Protection Motivation Theory In Reducing Vaping Behaviour In A Student Population, Babac Salmani

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

A threat appraisal model grounded in Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) determined whether providing health information regarding perceived severity (PS) and perceived vulnerability (PS) of vaping health complications, corroborates with reduced vaping-related intention and habitual behaviour. Seventy-seven regular vapers (22.21 ± 3.47 years) registered within a Canadian university were randomized into one of two groups, wherein the aforementioned threat appraisal information was present. Participants in the experimental group (n = 41) watched an 8-minute information video a week after baseline, following the threat appraisal components of PMT. Those in the attention control group (n = 36) watched an information video on …

It was important to SCUA to archive local web content during a historical moment for future research and context that had the potential to be lost, in a way that did not require the community to create and submit content during a global pandemic. Challenges arose including the need to select material quickly, capturing as much content …

The Impact Of Adaptive Learning In Principles Of Microeconomics, Doris S. Bennett, Cynthia S. Mccarty, Michael S. Carter

Southwestern Business Administration Journal

Abstract

The spread of Covid-19, which forced almost all learning to move to online in March, 2020, abruptly increased the number of undergraduates taking at least one online course by approximately 177% between the fall of 2019 and the spring of 2020 (Koksal, 2020; Carey, 2020; National Center for Education Statistics, 2020). Even without the Covid-19 disruption, online education has become increasing prevalent due to the decreasing allocation of resources to higher education and the pressure on college administrators to make a college education effective, affordable, and accessible for more students. Originally online instruction differed from in-class instruction only be …

Painting Outside Of The Lines: How Race Assignment Can Be Rethought Through Art, Giovanni Mella-Velazquez Aug 2021

Painting Outside Of The Lines: How Race Assignment Can Be Rethought Through Art, Giovanni Mella-Velazquez

Gettysburg Social Sciences Review

For centuries art has been used to make us think about our own human experiences. Unfortunately, works usually reflect the era which they were painted in; this has led to various artists showing, maintaining, and therefore reinforcing racist thoughts in our cultures. Art can be used to create a new narrative for our race assignments and their meanings. The idea of loving one's roots has been prevalent in many cultures, but in art form a disconnect between history and the everyday experience can arise which could miss the mark in helping us redefine our own race. Therefore, artwork which empowers …

Applying Classical Realism, Institutional Liberalism And Normative Theory To The Development And Distribution Of A Covid-19 Vaccine, Timothy Fay

Gettysburg Social Sciences Review

The development of a safe and effective Coronavirus vaccine has dominated the concerns of the international community over the course of the last six months. While the global community agrees on the importance of its development, it is not entirely clear how a vaccine will be distributed globally. The implications of which entity, whether a state or private company, develops a trusted vaccine first and how efficiently and equitably that vaccine is distributed are yet to be seen. Using Classical Realism, Institutional Liberalism, and Normative Theory, this paper seeks to discuss and analyze how the development of a vaccine will …

Invisible Labor: Job Satisfaction And Exploitation Among Female Domestic Workers In Pakistan, Ajwa Zulfiqar Aug 2021

Invisible Labor: Job Satisfaction And Exploitation Among Female Domestic Workers In Pakistan, Ajwa Zulfiqar

Gettysburg Social Sciences Review

The aim of this research was to look at the levels of job satisfaction among female domestic workers in Lahore and its association with the exploitation they face at work. Paid domestic service is not a part of the formal economy of Pakistan, thus there is no legal or political framework protecting workers. Informal work raises domestic workers’ chances of facing exploitation during employment in various forms. Sociological research conducted in this subject is very minimal, which is why this research was important to assess the working conditions of female domestic workers and how satisfied did they feel with their …

Sanctuary In The City Of Brotherly Love: Probing The Effectiveness And Broader Implications Of Philadelphia’S Sanctuary City Policies, Thomas A. Koenig Aug 2021

Sanctuary In The City Of Brotherly Love: Probing The Effectiveness And Broader Implications Of Philadelphia’S Sanctuary City Policies, Thomas A. Koenig

Gettysburg Social Sciences Review

Amidst the already fraught politics of immigration, “sanctuary” policies, whereby state and local law enforcement agencies limit their cooperation with federal immigration enforcement authorities to varying degrees, have emerged as a particularly contentious issue. This paper sifts past the political vitriol surrounding the issue of “sanctuary” and uses original survey research in Philadelphia to answer a straightforward question: Are these policies working? That is, are the city of Philadelphia’s sanctuary policies actually building trust between its undocumented residents and local law enforcement, thereby laying the groundwork for higher rates of crime reporting and safer communities? My results from a survey …

Attracting Newcomers To Canada’S Prairie West, 1896-1905: The Selling Of The West And The Persuasiveness Within The Government’S Promotional Booklets, Joshua L. Switzer Aug 2021

Attracting Newcomers To Canada’S Prairie West, 1896-1905: The Selling Of The West And The Persuasiveness Within The Government’S Promotional Booklets, Joshua L. Switzer

Gettysburg Social Sciences Review

Abstract: The prairie west of Canada was, nearing the turn of the twentieth century, considered to be empty, having not yet reached its assimilatory, and resource, economic, social or cultural potential. Many politicians, especially Clifford Sifton, sought to change this. Sifton eventually made Canada’s population increase a reality. He masterminded the most successful promotional campaign within Canada’s immigration policy to ever stretch the parameters of inclusion for enlarging the Canadian mosaic. The largest phenomenon of human migration to the Canadian prairie west was between 1896 and 1905. Sifton’s intercontinental and overseas promotional campaign became the magnet of attraction for newcomers …

Naturalistic Child Observation, Rachel Bradley Aug 2021

Naturalistic Child Observation, Rachel Bradley

Gettysburg Social Sciences Review

Among the many different research methods available naturalistic observation is one of the oldest forms. In this paper advantages and disadvantages of naturalistic observation will be discussed, followed by observations of two preschool children to determine which developmental stage they place in Piaget’s cognitive development theory. The results found that each child fit within Piaget's cognitive development theory with each exhibiting different spheres of the preoperational stage. Further research could look at gender differences or certain behavioral incidences only.

Finding And Explaining Discrepancies In Beliefs And Actions: Understanding Implicit Racism In Christianity, Jaycob S. Applegate, James N. Maples Aug 2021

Finding And Explaining Discrepancies In Beliefs And Actions: Understanding Implicit Racism In Christianity, Jaycob S. Applegate, James N. Maples

Gettysburg Social Sciences Review

Homogeneity in Christian congregations provides a unique opportunity to indirectly examine prejudice and color-blind racism. Although Christianity holds progressive beliefs regarding social injustice, persistent beliefs about individual free will offers a potential contradiction in how a practitioner approaches the idea of racial equality. In this study, the authors examine how religious affiliation might shape one’s perceptions of Black persons by examining colorblind racism. Using 2016 General Social Survey data and difference of means and Pearson correlation analysis, the researchers find a significant correlation in survey respondents identifying as being Christian and believing Black persons have a lack of will power. …

Creating A Culture Change: Sector Trainings For Dementia Friendly Communities For East Central Illinois Area Agency On Aging, Genesis Marie Buendia Aug 2021

Creating A Culture Change: Sector Trainings For Dementia Friendly Communities For East Central Illinois Area Agency On Aging, Genesis Marie Buendia

Stevenson Center for Community and Economic Development—Student Research

Regarding dementia, the public usually does not have a clear understanding of what it is and what it entails. People use it interchangeably with Alzheimer’s, which is not the same; and people fear it as it is part of the aging process, which is understandable but not true. Both of these misconceptions and more can be countered by implementing a dementia-friendly community (DFC). DFCs are cities that bring together different sectors (banks, hospitals, libraries, etc.) to create a cohesive network of resources, with their employees trained to interact with and bring awareness to persons with dementia (PWDs). During my practicum …
