Female Sexual Offending: The Experiences Identified By Treatment Providers, Jalie Adams
Female Sexual Offending: The Experiences Identified By Treatment Providers, Jalie Adams
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
Female sexual offending is a complex topic largely ignored within scholarly literature and among society. Therapeutic treatment providers with experience in the behavioral health care of the female sexual offender population provide the opportunity for additional awareness, insight, and understanding related to the phenomenon of female sexual offending through their distinct provider lens. This phenomenological research study used the lens of therapeutic provider experiences to build a succinct foundational overview of the topic of female sexual offending, expand knowledge related to the field, and develop insight into the providers who treat this complex population. This study was guided by the …

Is There Room For Grace In The American Dream?, Ali Critchfield
Is There Room For Grace In The American Dream?, Ali Critchfield
Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies
In the face of growing inequality in the United States, researchers have sought to understand why there is not a proportionate level of public concern over widening economic disparities (Kim 2023, 39–54). Much research in this area is grounded in the idea that America has become a meritocracy, where success is earned by merit. Despite the nation’s Puritan beginnings that emphasized that God’s grace, not works, are what led to salvation and success, the country has taken on a meritocratic core, one that effectively eliminates grace in the pursuit of material success. This way of thinking has compounded with the …

Finding The Green, Bridget Miller
Finding The Green, Bridget Miller
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
This series of watercolor paintings pays homage to the importance of green spaces in urban environments, specifically within the boundaries of Western Washington University’s (WWU’s) campus. Bellingham, Washington, a relatively rainy and cloudy region, sees a significant number of gray, cloudy days. Gray clouds, combined with gray pavement, combined with the gray ocean, can lead to feelings of dreariness and depression. However, urban planning principles suggest that existing among green spaces (parks, hikes, trees, grass, etc.) plays an integral role in a community’s overall mental health. The following paintings depict several of the many coniferous trees to be found around …

Colorful Relations: How Race Conditions The Relationship Between Sexual Orientation And Willingness To Interracially Date, Emily Sabisch
Colorful Relations: How Race Conditions The Relationship Between Sexual Orientation And Willingness To Interracially Date, Emily Sabisch
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
The present study examines how sexual orientation impacts willingness to interracially date; additionally, this study investigates if race conditions this relationship. Using data from Interracialdating.com, a pool of 2,215 respondents is collected. The data includes only those who are single and have no children currently but desire children. Logistic regression is utilized to analyze the odds of the respondent’s willingness to date either Asian or Black individuals. The findings indicate that a queer person is less willing than straight respondents to date both Asian and Black individuals when controlling for possible redundant variables. However, an interaction effect from the variable …
Not A 9 To 5: The Benefits And Drawbacks Of Pursuing A Career As A Musician, Brody Hunt
Not A 9 To 5: The Benefits And Drawbacks Of Pursuing A Career As A Musician, Brody Hunt
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
Mental health is a major problem within the music industry. Professional musicians report higher rates of mental illness (e.g., mood disorders, substance use disorders, eating disorders, increased suicidality) than the general population. While this is not caused by pursuing music as a career, numerous stressors that musicians experience exacerbate this relationship. Musicians experience great financial insecurity, relational sacrifices, difficulties feeling in control, difficulties being objectified, touring stressors, and pressures to use substances. However, musicians also report positive mental health and flourishing; notably, they report eudaimonic indicators of wellbeing such as feelings of personal growth, and high purpose in life. In …
The Impact Of Psychological Resilience On Job Performance In A Cross-Cultural Context: Evidence From Chinese Multinational Corporations, Chunlin Wu
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
As globalisation accelerates and multinational companies expand, more employees are being assigned to work in other countries. This phenomenon of international assignments brings business opportunities and numerous challenges, the most prominent being cross-cultural adjustment. Expatriates must face different cultural backgrounds, values, and lifestyles. Such cultural differences can lead to communication barriers, psychological stress, and lifestyle difficulties, subsequently affecting job performance. This study explores the mechanism between psychological resilience and job performance from the perspective of expatriates' cross-cultural adjustment. It conducts empirical research through two rounds of three surveys, collecting 229 valid questionnaires in Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam.
First, this study …

This project takes ideas and concepts like risk perception and cultural theory and using fictional storylines as an attempt to communicate them to a broader audience. Telling these stories in this way is an attempt to bridge the gap between groups of people who might have different life experiences, and hopefully use the power of storytelling to demonstrate an optimistic view of the future in order to drive change towards a better future. The actual content of these stories is summarized as: In a world where Climate Change was long ago recognized as the biggest threat to the United States …
Visualising Household Food Resilience, Chloe Unflat
Visualising Household Food Resilience, Chloe Unflat
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
For my Honors Capstone project, I wanted to combine my interest in sustainable food systems and my educational background in design to create a cumulative final exploration. Over the past four years, I have practiced my visual communication skills and thought now would be the perfect time to apply this to a topic to directly better our campus and greater Bellingham communities.
To do this, I teamed up with a group of students from Gigi Berardi’s ENVS 415 class, a Food Security Planning Studio. The group, Elle Reed, Emma Worgum, and Flynn Williamson, worked diligently to gather information for their …
Securing Securities: Political Risk, Sovereign Debt, And The Anglo-American Financial Power Transition, Michael Lee
Securing Securities: Political Risk, Sovereign Debt, And The Anglo-American Financial Power Transition, Michael Lee
Publications and Research
Under what conditions do countries lose their status as the leading global financial center? Some scholars argue that such shifts follow shortly after transitions in the distribution of other key capabilities (e.g. GDP), while others argue that path dependence or other more bespoke capabilities might be able to sustain financial leadership long after decline in other capabilities. This paper aims to understand the causes of the Anglo-American financial transition. I argue that the ability to manage political risk for investors is critical to the position of countries as financial entrepôts. In the case of British financial leadership, I argue that …
A Break From The Past Or A Link In The Chain?: The Republican Party From Ronald Reagan To Donald Trump, Mitchell Evans
A Break From The Past Or A Link In The Chain?: The Republican Party From Ronald Reagan To Donald Trump, Mitchell Evans
Political Science and International Relations Theses
The election of Donald Trump appeared to be a rejection of Republican orthodoxy. That someone who targeted the previous idols of Republican beliefs about free trade, protectionism, immigration, and welfare could have so completely won over the Republican voter base was notable. However, that Republican base had changed substantially since the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980. Where white college graduates have traditionally voted more Republican, and those without a college degree were more Democratic in this era, this dynamic had switched by 2016. In this thesis, I ask two questions: First, how has the Republican Party changed its ideological …

Social Media And Tracking Apps' Impact On Trust And Satisfaction Between Romantic Partners, Allison Kostiw
Social Media And Tracking Apps' Impact On Trust And Satisfaction Between Romantic Partners, Allison Kostiw
Honors Projects in Communication and Language Studies
Social media is a form of technology that is on a constant rise, especially in areas of both growth and development. The world has been continuing to change in many ways because of it and the connections made between individuals have been affected. An area specifically impacted by social media is relational communication between romantic partners. Social media’s rise allows individuals to disclose information about themselves with a simple click of a button. This enables others to view stereotypes and compare their lives with others, which could be seen as an unrealistic standard. This thesis focuses on the discovery of …

Controlling The Narrative: The Effects Of Media Coverage On Fear Of Crime And Socio-Political Ideology, Andrew Koppelman
Controlling The Narrative: The Effects Of Media Coverage On Fear Of Crime And Socio-Political Ideology, Andrew Koppelman
Theses
Several decades of study have established an understanding that media have a unique power to influence the perspectives and worldviews of audiences. This phenomenon has been explored through the lenses of Social Learning and Cultivation theory, wherein media appeal to base human tendencies of self-preservation and teaches audiences how to maximize rewards for their actions by acting as a sort of instructor or friendly warning from members of the community. While prior studies have suggested the presence of this effect, little research has been devoted to understanding the ways that this may influence behaviors in viewers. My research seeks to …
A Comparison Of The Relative Magnitude Of Combinations Of Relapse Types In Rats, Mary Bridges
A Comparison Of The Relative Magnitude Of Combinations Of Relapse Types In Rats, Mary Bridges
Theses
Applied behavior analysis uses scientifically derived methods to create treatments for socially significant behaviors. A threat to these successful treatments is the recurrence of previously reduced behavior (i.e., relapse). Relapse can be categorized into several types depending on the variables that induce relapse. Three types prevalent in clinical settings are reinstatement (i.e., induced by re-exposure to reinforcers or stimuli paired with the target behavior), renewal (i.e., induced by changes in context), and resurgence (i.e., induced by worsening of alternative reinforcement). Because relapse is harmful to long-term treatment maintenance, prior research has developed and tested mitigation strategies for these relapse types, …
Paul Celan And The Processes Of Survival In Post-Shoah Jewish Writing, Ari Savage
Paul Celan And The Processes Of Survival In Post-Shoah Jewish Writing, Ari Savage
Theses
The following is a study of the poetry of Paul Celan as a representation of psychological and social processes present in the written works of Shoah survivors. It begins with an analysis of the place of writing in Jewish culture, then identifies three primary processes which operate in sequence: alienation, individuation, and integration. By examining Paul Celan’s highly personal and autobiographical texts in the context of his life experience as a Shoah survivor it is possible to discern the social and psychological forces at work which compel survivors to express their traumas in written form, and to gain a better …

Unearthing The Past: A Comprehensive Study Of Natural And Anthropogenic Changes At An Archaeological Site Through Hydrogeologic Connectivity Utilizing Gis, Mehlich Ii Phosphorus Extractant, And Ph, Dana L. F. Herren
Theses
This thesis aims to thoroughly analyze the Mehlich II Phosphorus Extractant and pH levels at the Bains Gap Village Site in Anniston, AL., while examining the impact of various environmental factors and human activities on them. Phosphorus is often used in archaeology as an indicator of human activity. Soil core samples were collected to analyze anomalies in phosphorus levels.
To establish any relationships, phosphorus and pH levels from soil cores were correlated with findings from past excavation units and features. The potential effects of hydrogeologic connectivity on soil phosphorus and pH levels were investigated. Geospatial technologies were used to manage …
An Evaluation Of The Teach-Back Method For Training Functional Analysis Methodology, Bethany Christie
An Evaluation Of The Teach-Back Method For Training Functional Analysis Methodology, Bethany Christie
Theses
Behavior analysts conduct functional analyses to identify the environmental contingencies maintaining challenging behavior, which allows them to develop a function-based treatment plan. Behavioral staff must be fully trained on functional analysis methodology before conducting the analysis. A common way to train staff to conduct a functional analysis is through behavioral skills training (BST), but BST is time consuming and includes numerous materials. Teach-back, a widely used training method in healthcare settings, requires less time and no materials. Currently, there is little research on the effectiveness of the teach-back method for teaching behavioral techniques, and there is no research on the …

The Ghanaian War Against Malaria: A Geospatial Approach To Malaria And Healthcare Access In Ghana, Emmanuel Aklie
Theses
This geospatial research project aims to analyze the complex factors influencing malaria incidence in Ghana, including healthcare access, cultural beliefs, and preventive measures. Using GIS mapping and spatial analysis, the study examines malaria distribution and healthcare facility locations to identify hotspots and access inequalities. Combining quantitative data from sources like Demographic and Health Surveys with qualitative methods like surveys and interviews, the project analyzes the relationship between malaria prevalence and vaccination rates, bed net usage, and cultural views on treatment. By taking a comprehensive approach focused on evidence-based insights, the research seeks to inform targeted interventions by the Ghanaian government …
