The Relationship Between Object-Based Judgments And Judgments Of Relative Direction As Measures Of Spatial Memory, Zachary Carpenter, Tressa Molinar, Herbert A. Colle Apr 2020

The Relationship Between Object-Based Judgments And Judgments Of Relative Direction As Measures Of Spatial Memory, Zachary Carpenter, Tressa Molinar, Herbert A. Colle

Symposium of Student Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities Materials

There are frequently two different conceptions used to describe what people store in their memory for environmental layouts. The SOLAR (Straight-Line Object-Based, Local Angular Relations) model and the quasi-Euclidean Framework model. The Framework model assumes that people store coordinated points in their layout of spatial memory. This grid-like representation of points is then used to remember layouts. A common, natural judgment that is used within the Framework model are called judgments of relative direction (JRDs). The SOLAR model, on the other hand, assumes people remember and store information about 3D objects, so characteristics such as fronts can be used as …

Food Frights: Covid-19 And The Specter Of Hunger, Maggie Dickinson Apr 2020

Food Frights: Covid-19 And The Specter Of Hunger, Maggie Dickinson

Publications and Research

Worries over widespread food shortages in the first few weeks of the COVID-19 lockdowns in the United States eclipsed the real hunger crisis on the horizon—one intimately tied to already existing inequalities. In the midst of the pandemic, the specter of hunger is haunting the same people it always has—the poor, the undocumented, low wage workers, the un- and under employed. It is not our supply systems that are breaking down and causing hunger, but our systems for ensuring people can access the food that exists which have been broken for a long time.

Why Steps Is Such An Important Program In Our Area, Angelika Gomez, Shannon Lyons, Molly Mancini, Sarah Saunders Apr 2020

Why Steps Is Such An Important Program In Our Area, Angelika Gomez, Shannon Lyons, Molly Mancini, Sarah Saunders

Spring Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

One of the most overlooked populations in any community is the homeless. However, this population is still a very important part of any community. This population can be valuable to the community if given the correct resources. Therefore, it is important for communities to be cognizant of the homeless population present in the area so that they can make informed decisions on policies that pertain to this population and the allocation of resources. It is the purpose of this study to not only attempt to count the total homeless population but also observe and evaluate the resources present to the …

Social Appearance Anxiety Is Strongly Related To Eating Disorder Symptoms Regardless Of Age In Both Clinical Eating Disorder And Nonclinical Cases, Jordan E. Drake, Caroline Christian, Cheri Levinson Apr 2020

Social Appearance Anxiety Is Strongly Related To Eating Disorder Symptoms Regardless Of Age In Both Clinical Eating Disorder And Nonclinical Cases, Jordan E. Drake, Caroline Christian, Cheri Levinson

Undergraduate Arts and Research Showcase

Eating disorders (EDs) are serious mental illnesses that often develop in adolescence and persist in adulthood. Social appearance anxiety (SAA; fear of appearance-based judgment) is a risk factor for EDs and related to ED symptoms. SAA is more prevalent in non-clinical adolescents than non-clinical adults, yet no research has investigated the relationship between SAA and ED symptoms across age. The present study tested if age moderated the relationship between SAA and drive for thinness (DT), bulimic symptoms, and body dissatisfaction in a clinical ED sample (N=952, 28.5%), a nonclinical sample (N=1,693; 51.7%), and the full sample …

Can Exploratory Learning Help To Close The Minority Achievement Gap?, Shannon Nicole Derkson, Marci S. Decaro Apr 2020

Can Exploratory Learning Help To Close The Minority Achievement Gap?, Shannon Nicole Derkson, Marci S. Decaro

Undergraduate Arts and Research Showcase

Underrepresented minority (URM) students are disproportionately retained and underperform in STEM disciplines compared to non-URM students, yet are needed in the STEM workforce. Possible causes of this minority achievement gap are social isolation, “chilly” classrooms, low confidence, and stereotype threat (Ballen et al., 2017). Inclusive instruction, which includes active learning, may help to reduce this gap (Saunders & Kardia, 1997). Active learning engages students in learning through activities and/or discussion in class as opposed to passively listening to lectures (Brame, 2016; Freeman et al., 2014). But, not all active learning strategies promote inclusive learning environments. We examined whether a type …

The Revolving Door Of Recidivism, Laura E. Bull Apr 2020

The Revolving Door Of Recidivism, Laura E. Bull

Classical Conversations

With the rise in the use of prisons, recidivism also grew. Recidivism, in the broadest sense, is the act of a past offender coming back into contact with the justice system. Prisons have been used as far back as the fourth century, but over time their purpose has changed. Today in the United States, the main purpose of prisons is rehabilitation. The most recent law, the First Steps Act, reflects the desire to reduce the trend of recidivism. Many programs have been used as a method of reducing recidivism. Recidivism is a cycle of pain, creating jaded prisoners and placing …

The Present And Future Law Enforcement Workforce: A Generational Comparison Of Motivators For Entering And Remaining In The Profession, Nicole Cain Apr 2020

The Present And Future Law Enforcement Workforce: A Generational Comparison Of Motivators For Entering And Remaining In The Profession, Nicole Cain

Doctor of Education (Ed.D)

Recruitment and retention are persistent issues within the law enforcement organizations because positions are remaining vacant and fewer people are attracted to the profession. The purpose of this research study was to understand the differences between generational cohorts and specifically the millennial generation’s motivation for entering and remaining in the law enforcement profession, as well as their satisfaction with their career choice. This quantitative, non-experimental research study utilized a survey method to address six research questions. A convenient, purposive sample consisting of sworn police officers from one mid-size law enforcement agency located in central Florida represented the study’s data source. …

A Theology Of Compassion: Encouraging Local Church Ministry To Children In Foster Care, Allen Griffin

Doctor of Ministry (DMin)

Compassionate care within the local community of a church is of vital essence to a thriving church ministry. For centuries church leaders have endeavored to make an impact in the lives of the people living in their vicinity through outreach efforts. The compassion of the local church is needed in the area of children in foster care. Through the analysis of two church programs focused on serving the spiritual, educational, and social needs of teens in the foster care system, this dissertation will examine how to assist local churches in establishing a program to serve the children in their local …

Family Separation And Child Welfare: An Examination Of U.S. Immigration Policies Affecting Unaccompanied Alien Children, Mallory K. Adams Apr 2020

Family Separation And Child Welfare: An Examination Of U.S. Immigration Policies Affecting Unaccompanied Alien Children, Mallory K. Adams

Selected Honors Theses

Immigration policy in the U.S. is a confusing and inadequate system, the shortcomings of which directly impact the lives of millions of individuals, children, families, and communities. Its primary inadequacies include an overall lack of clearly defined policies and procedures, confusion among immigration authorities and child welfare practitioners regarding proper procedures, and non-compliance with procedural standards by immigration authorities. Those shortcomings have largely resulted in many immigrant families being separated from each other, immigrant children experiencing trauma, and a widespread disregard for unauthorized immigrants’ both constitutional and human rights. The literature reviewed describes relevant immigration policies and their issues. The …

Lysistrata: Modern Day Feminist, Ancient Joke, Megan Tobias Apr 2020

Lysistrata: Modern Day Feminist, Ancient Joke, Megan Tobias

Kean Quest

Most of the literature written on the topic of Ancient Greece was written by men, leaving out the female perspective and narrative. This is crucial to understanding the context of plays, art, and books of the time period. In an effort to have a more well-rounded view of Ancient Greece, the female perspective is needed. Without it, scholarly articles and reviews remain one-sided, and therefore skewed. In looking at works through the lens of women, Ancient Greece comes alive as a whole new civilization. Hopefully, more women will revisit this topic and revitalize the conversation of the art of Ancient …

Passing Down The Rolling Pin: Lefse, Memory, And A Norwegian-American Identity, Rebecca Garbe Apr 2020

Passing Down The Rolling Pin: Lefse, Memory, And A Norwegian-American Identity, Rebecca Garbe

Scandinavian Studies Student Award

This paper explores the intersections between memory and food-making and how they inform a Norwegian-American cultural identity. Based on fieldwork done in June and July of 2019 in Fosston, Minnesota, I use lefse, a Norwegian potato-based flatbread, as a focal point, for analysis. I argue that lefse-making in Fosston acts as a medium through which residents engage with a collective memory of an immigrant heritage. This traditional food-making, I assert, relies on knowledge passed down through and across family lines allowing food-makers and eaters to experience an embodied connection to their cultural past. Investigating my own Norwegian heritage, I draw …

Did Social-Distancing Measures In Kentucky Help To Flatten The Covid-19 Curve?, Charles J. Courtemanche, Joseph Garuccio, Anh Le, Joshua C. Pinkston, Aaron Yelowitz Apr 2020

Did Social-Distancing Measures In Kentucky Help To Flatten The Covid-19 Curve?, Charles J. Courtemanche, Joseph Garuccio, Anh Le, Joshua C. Pinkston, Aaron Yelowitz

Institute for the Study of Free Enterprise Working Papers

In the absence of a vaccine or more effective treatment options, containing the spread of novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) must rely on non-pharmaceutical interventions. All U.S. states adopted social-distancing measures in March and April of 2020, though they varied in both timing and scope. Kentucky began by closing public schools and restaurant dining rooms on March 16th before progressing to closing other non-essential businesses and eventually issuing a “Healthy at Home” order with restrictions similar to the shelter-in-place (SIPO) orders adopted by other states. We aim to quantify the impact of these measures on COVID-19 case growth in the …

Framing U.S.-Venezuelan Relations Under Bush And Chávez: Origins Of A Country In Crisis, Rashaunna Campbell Apr 2020

Framing U.S.-Venezuelan Relations Under Bush And Chávez: Origins Of A Country In Crisis, Rashaunna Campbell

Communication

Venezuela has the largest proven oil reserves in the world and is the third largest source of U.S. petroleum, but today it is a country in crisis. Moreover, relations between the U.S. and Venezuela shifted dramatically under the Bush and Chávez administrations. This contentious relationship along with Venezuela’s ongoing political, economic, and humanitarian crises have resulted in a repressive government, hyperinflation, starvation, mortality, and mass emigration from the country. Based on the theory that international news coverage is influenced by the experiences and attitudes of people from different nations and regions, this study compared domestic and Latin American news coverage …

Socially Constructing The #Metoo Movement In The New York Times, Hannah Jureller Apr 2020

Socially Constructing The #Metoo Movement In The New York Times, Hannah Jureller

Sociology

In 2017, The New York Times published an article titled, “Harvey Weinstein Paid Off Sexual Harassment Accusers for Decades” written by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey (2019), exposing one of the most abusive sexual predators in Hollywood. This sparked a movement among victim-survivors and their allies now known as the #MeToo Movement. This movement brought issues of sexual assault to the forefront. The New York Times covered this movement extensively and can be considered very influential in their coverage of the movement. For this project, I conducted a content analysis of 31 New York Times articles to identify how The …
