Reasonable Accommodation For Workers Who Are Deaf: Differences In Ada Knowledge Between Supervisors And Advocates, Hayley Stokar

Despite the existence of the Americans with Disabilities Act (1990), workers who are deaf still struggle with reasonable accommodations in the workplace. The challenges relate, in part, to knowledge and training deficits among hearing supervisors. In order to understand the difference between supervisor knowledge and advocate knowledge around reasonable accommodation, focus groups were conducted with two populations: (1) supervisors in retail and food service who were all hearing, and (2) advocates engaged in training and education around deaf accommodation needs, who were either deaf or hearing. Findings identify similarities and disparities between the groups, highlighting that, while specific legal knowledge …

Understanding Deaf And Hard Of Hearing College Student Experiences Of School Social Work Services In The K-12 Education System, Kota Takayama

This article focuses on Deaf and Hard of Hearing college students’ experiences with school social work services. This study surveyed 136 Deaf and hard of hearing college students about their experiences with school social work services, their concerns about social workers’ competencies, and service delivery. The results of the study imply that school-based social work services should be culturally relevant and school social workers culturally competent. Furthermore, the results indicated that respondents ranked services they felt most comfortable asking about and which aspects of service delivery they felt were most important.

As Baby Boomers enter the late adulthood stage of life, hearing loss continues to be one of the most prevalent, chronic, and isolating conditions facing older adults today. Research has focused on the negative consequences of hearing loss on the health and the person’s well-being, but it is equally important to recognize that hearing loss also leads to communication loss. The resulting social isolation and the collateral effects of hearing loss on the communication partner are the focus of this mixed-method study that explored the hearing loss-related quality of life for both parties. During a clinical rotation at a large urban teaching hospital, the occurrence of medication errors noted resulted in negative impacts on patient wellness. Research studies indicate that the U.S. spends more than $40 billion each year as a result of medication errors. A large portion of these medication errors are preventable. A thorough literature review of 40 research studies was conducted to identify issues associated with medication errors. Many studies have shown that high elevation environments are among very sensitive to climatic changes and where impacts are exacerbated. Across Central Asia, which is especially vulnerable to climate change due to aridity, the ability of global climate projections to capture the complex dynamics of mountainous environments is particularly limited. Over montane Central Asia, agropastoralism constitutes a major portion of the rural economy. Extensive herbaceous vegetation forms the basis of rural economies in Kyrgyzstan. It is embedded in the very foundations of statistics and divides frequentist and Bayesian inference in an irreconcilable way. This paradox is the Gordian Knot of statistical inference and Data Science in the Zettabyte Era. If statistical science is ready for revolution confronted by the challenges of massive data sets analysis, the first step is to finally solve this anomaly. In frequentist statistics, point-null hypothesis testing based on significance tests and confidence intervals are harmonious procedures and lead to the same conclusion. This is not the case in the domain of the Bayesian framework. An inference made about the point-null hypothesis using Bayes factor may lead to an opposite conclusion if it is based on the Bayesian credible interval. Bayesian suggestions to test point-nulls using credible intervals are misleading and should be dismissed. A null hypothesized value may be outside a credible interval but supported by Bayes factor (a Type I conflict), or contrariwise, the null value may be inside …

In this paper, I explore the rhetorical devices of the popular artist P!NK during a live performance of her song “Dear Mr. President,” from 2007. Using the method of rhetorical descriptive analysis I answer the research question: How does P!NK combine rhetorical and musical strategies in “Dear Mr. President” to encourage public discourse? The findings indicate that P!NK crafted a unique protest song which effectively uses both rhetorical and musical devices to appeal to her audiences’ emotions and encourages participation in public discourse. When tracking the flow of personal incomes, four groupings of expenditures emerge: taxes, fixed expenses, saving, and consumption. This cross-sectional study of 2016 data highlights the differences in these areas across the sixty-six South Dakota counties and between various levels of income to illustrate the income flows among South Dakota residents. Using data primarily from the Internal Revenue Service, several important patterns and statistics arise. In South Dakota, the average statewide income per capita was about $32,127. Individuals in metropolitan counties received the highest average incomes per capita, and individuals in counties with the lowest population densities had the lowest. …

In the case of Daphnia, aquatic microcrustaceans widely used in population/community ecology and environmental science studies, understanding factors that influence microbiome shifts among individuals is useful for both basic and applied research contexts. College students, as part of the broader population of emerging adults, are thought to be particularly vulnerable to stress compared to other age groups as they transition through adolescence into adulthood. Various internal and external factors including mindfulness, disability, and social support play an important role in students’ stress levels. The relationships among these three predictor variables and stress were analyzed in a sample of 1,049 individuals between the ages of 18-29. Mass violence is a growing concern in the United States. In August 2019, two mass shootings occurred less than 24 hours apart, but far too often these incidents are lost in the waves of hashtags, tweets, and posts offering thoughts and prayers, but such attention rarely results in action. I hypothesize that the current conceptualization and enforcement of masculinity breeds resentment and frustration toward women and when taken to the extreme results in violence. The present study explores public perceptions of male victimization in the age of #MeToo. Utilizing qualitative content analysis, Facebook comments from popular news media pages’ breaking news posts of Kevin Spacey’s alleged assault against Anthony Rapp were analyzed for themes. After coding, six initial themes emerged: indirect blame, victim support, non-support of victim(s), perpetrator support, non-support of perpetrator, and trauma distancing. These themes resulted in three overarching findings. Facebook commenters either commented on circumstances surrounding the victim, acts or inactions taken by the perpetrator, or they distanced themselves from the trauma by commenting on happenings separate from the alleged abuse. …

In the years following the 1989 collapse of communism in Eastern and Central Europe, demographers noticed a sharp decline in total fertility rates in many of the countries of the region. While this trend is consistent with a general worldwide trend, it does seem to be even more pronounced in the region, with many countries having fertility rates significantly below replacement.
