The Method Of Empathy-Based Stories As A Tool For Research And Teaching, Elina Särkelä, Juha Suoranta Feb 2020

The Method Of Empathy-Based Stories As A Tool For Research And Teaching, Elina Särkelä, Juha Suoranta

The Qualitative Report

In this article we describe a qualitative research method, the “Method of Empathy-Based Stories” (MEBS) and ponder its value in classroom teaching. Our research question is as follows: What is MEBS and what are its possible uses in research and teaching? We gathered empathy-based stories written by students (N = 15) and analysed them with thematic analysis. The dominating themes in writings were the threat of climate change and various coping strategies. MEBS allowed students to describe their ways of thinking and acting, and to take part in the discussion. In general, the use of MEBS can generate hypotheses and …

Exploring Sexual Dimorphism Of The Modern Human Talus Through Geometric Morphometric Methods, Rita Sorrentino, Maria Giovanna Belcastro, Carla Figus, Nicholas B. Stephens, Kevin Turley, William Harcourt-Smith, Timothy M. Ryan, Stefano Benazzi

Publications and Research

Sex determination is a pivotal step in forensic and bioarchaeological fields.Generally, scholars focus on metric or qualitative morphological features, but in the last few years several contributions have applied geometric-morphometric (GM) techniques to overcome limitations of traditional approaches. In this study,we explore sexual dimorphism in modern human tali from three early 20th century populations (Sassari and Bologna, Italy; NewYork, USA) at intra- and interspecific population levels using geometric morphometric (GM) methods.Statistical analyses were performed using shape, form, and size variables. Our results do not show significant differences in shape between males and females, either considering the pooled sample or the individual populations. Differences in talar …

Adverse Childhood Experiences And The Associations With Depression And Anxiety In Adolescents, Hye Yeon Lee, Isak Kim, Jeongwoon Jeong

Counseling Faculty Publications

Objectives

There has been increasing attention to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) among adolescents in the U.S because ACEs may result in severe mental health issues. Although associations between ACEs and mental health have been explored, research on how different types or combinations of ACEs render different impacts on adolescents is limited. Therefore, this study aims to (a) examine latent classes of ACEs among adolescents who have experienced at least one ACE and (b) investigate associations of each latent group of ACEs with mental health problems, depression and anxiety.

Method

Questionnaires on ACEs and depression/anxiety from the 2016 National Survey of …

Private Equity Value Creation In Finance: Evidence From Life Insurance, Divya Kirti, Natasha Sarin Feb 2020

Private Equity Value Creation In Finance: Evidence From Life Insurance, Divya Kirti, Natasha Sarin

All Faculty Scholarship

This paper studies how private equity buyouts create value in the insurance industry, where decentralized regulation creates opportunities for aggressive tax and capital management. Using novel data on 57 large private equity deals in the insurance industry, we show that buyouts create value by decreasing insurers' tax liabilities; and by reaching-for-yield: PE firms tilt their subsidiaries' bond portfolios toward junk bonds while avoiding corresponding capital charges. Previous work on affiliated or "shadow" reinsurance and capital management misses the important role that private equity buyouts play as recent drivers of these phenomenon. The trend we document is of growing importance in …

Citation Analysis Of Mathematics And Statistics Dissertations And Theses From The University At Albany, Kathleen H. Flynn

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

This study analyzed dissertations and theses completed from 2009-2019 in the Mathematics and Statistics department at the University at Albany to investigate resource type, citation age, publishers, and journal title dispersion. Students cited journal articles 57.0% of the time, while books and book chapters combined accounted for 30.5% of the citations. Publisher usage fit the Pareto Distribution; however, there was a high journal title dispersion. Preprints represented 4.6% of the citations, an increase from previous studies. The amount of graduate student citation quality issues and preprint citations shows a need for instruction and discussions in these areas.

Children’S Voices About ‘Return’ Migration From The United States To Mexico: The 0.5 Generation, Víctor Zúñiga, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Since 2004, our research has focused precisely in those minors who ‘returned’ from the United States to Mexico. Our interest has been to know the social, geographical, educational, and symbolic trajectories of those migrant children and adolescents who are part of the contemporary move of returnees. Based on the children’s narratives (all collected before US November 2016 federal election), we now have a multifaceted response to the question: How and why are young Mexican migrants returning from the United States to Mexico? Some of these returnees were born in Mexico and arrived to the United States when they were young. …

Black Psychology: A Forerunner Of Positive Psychology, Aaron Bethea Feb 2020

Black Psychology: A Forerunner Of Positive Psychology, Aaron Bethea

Psychology from the Margins

Abstract

The core virtues of positive psychology are very similar to the psychological strengths of African Americans in Black psychology. The psychological strengths of African Americans, however, did not receive as much attention in the field as the core virtues of positive psychology. Although these virtues are very similar, they were produced in different social, historical contexts and for different purposes. The tenets of Black psychology were created within a population that was being resilient in the face of oppression, the core virtues of positive psychology produced within a society that had the luxury of focusing on thriving and flourishing. …

The History Of Lobotomies: Examining Its Impacts On Marginalized Groups And The Development Of Psychosurgery, Simon Godin, Brett Leblanc Feb 2020

The History Of Lobotomies: Examining Its Impacts On Marginalized Groups And The Development Of Psychosurgery, Simon Godin, Brett Leblanc

Psychology from the Margins

Frontal lobotomies, which are defined as the lesioning of the frontal lobe from the rest of the brain, were performed extensively from the 1930s to the 1960s in Europe and the United States, significantly impacting psychology and psychosurgery. The history of frontal lobotomies features many different practitioners with diverse methods; however, the overwhelming majority of popular lobotomists committed unethical actions by today’s standards that led to the direct marginalization of specific demographics. Using a framework guided by an exploration of those historically disempowered by the performance of lobotomies, this review article traces the lobotomy’s historical progression, focusing on the unethical …

Understanding The Work Experiences Of Gender And Sexual Minorities: Advances, Issues, And New Directions In Research, Marc Cubrich Feb 2020

Understanding The Work Experiences Of Gender And Sexual Minorities: Advances, Issues, And New Directions In Research, Marc Cubrich

Psychology from the Margins

Our understanding of the histories of psychology and LGBTQ+ activism have only recently begun to become increasingly intertwined. Psychological science has been used to influence a number of domains including mental health policy, laws and judicial rulings, and attitudes towards social issues. While psychological science has advanced our understanding of these domains, there remains a need for research that examines the experiences of underrepresented groups (e.g., women, racial minorities, members of the LGBTQ+ community, etc.) across distinct aspects of their working lives. Issues of heterosexism, or anti-LGBTQ+ attitudes, prejudice, and discrimination, have received relatively little attention in industrial and organizational …

Towards An Eternity: Celebrating The Association Of Black Psychologists’ 50th Anniversary, Evan Auguste, Brittany M. Griffin

Psychology from the Margins

In response to the American Psychological Association’s practice of excluding Black students and marginalizing Black professionals, the Association of Black Psychologists (ABPsi) was formed. ABPsi is an organization essentially designed to help remedy the effects of racism and oppression on Black communities in America and throughout the diaspora. Through a tradition of anti-racist and Afrikan-centered research, activism, and teaching, ABPsi has significantly contributed to the advancement of the field of psychology and to the well-being of Black people in the 50 years since its inception. This article highlights the formation, work, and legacy of this organization.

A Historical Analysis Of The Vocational Guidance Of Women, Nuha Alshabani, Alejandra Gonzalez Lopez, Erika L. Graham, Samsara Soto Feb 2020

A Historical Analysis Of The Vocational Guidance Of Women, Nuha Alshabani, Alejandra Gonzalez Lopez, Erika L. Graham, Samsara Soto

Psychology from the Margins

Abstract

The development of formal vocational guidance for women has been stalled by gender roles and expectations, restriction of occupational opportunities, and societal norms. Among women, the development of formal vocational guidance has also been stunted by racism and classism. A review of diverse women’s occupational experiences, vocational guidance, and utilization of interest inventories throughout the early to mid-1900s is provided. The impact of increased opportunities, social attitudes, and WWII on women’s occupation experience is explored. However, these opportunities mostly benefitted affluent White women, and the early literature contains little mention of diverse groups of women. During the first half …

Tracing Change In Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting Through Social Networks: An Intersectional Analysis Of The Influence Of Gender, Generation, Status, And Structural Inequality, Amadou Moreau, Bettina Shell-Duncan Feb 2020

Tracing Change In Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting Through Social Networks: An Intersectional Analysis Of The Influence Of Gender, Generation, Status, And Structural Inequality, Amadou Moreau, Bettina Shell-Duncan

Reproductive Health

Policies and programs designed to eliminate female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) in Senegal have been implemented over several decades, but the practice has been surprisingly tenacious. Strategies for accelerating abandonment have been informed by theories of change, and social norms theory, in particular, has become a prominent framework for understanding behavior change dynamics. FGM/C is held in place by interdependent normative expectations: what one family chooses to do is linked to expectations of others and reinforced through social sanctions. Hence, a key strategy for promoting behavior change rests on coordinating change in norms and behavior among people who interact with one …

Assessing The Accuracy Of Approximate Confidence Intervals Proposed For The Mean Of Poisson Distribution, Alireza Shirvani, Malek Fathizadeh Feb 2020

Assessing The Accuracy Of Approximate Confidence Intervals Proposed For The Mean Of Poisson Distribution, Alireza Shirvani, Malek Fathizadeh

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The Poisson distribution is applied as an appropriate standard model to analyze count data. Because this distribution is known as a discrete distribution, representation of accurate confidence intervals for its distribution mean is extremely difficult. Approximate confidence intervals were presented for the Poisson distribution mean. The purpose of this study is to simultaneously compare several confidence intervals presented, according to the average coverage probability and accurate confidence coefficient and the average confidence interval length criteria.

Analytical Closed-Form Solution For General Factor With Many Variables, Stan Lipovetsky, Vladimir Manewitsch Feb 2020

Analytical Closed-Form Solution For General Factor With Many Variables, Stan Lipovetsky, Vladimir Manewitsch

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The factor analytic triad method of one-factor solution gives the explicit analytical form for a common latent factor built by three variables. The current work considers analytical presentation of a general latent factor constructed in a closed-form solution for multivariate case. The results can be supportive to theoretical description and practical application of latent variable modeling, especially for big data because the analytical closed-form solution is not prone to data dimensionality.

Regression Modeling And Prediction By Individual Observations Versus Frequency, Stan Lipovetsky Feb 2020

Regression Modeling And Prediction By Individual Observations Versus Frequency, Stan Lipovetsky

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A regression model built by a dataset could sometimes demonstrate a low quality of fit and poor predictions of individual observations. However, using the frequencies of possible combinations of the predictors and the outcome, the same models with the same parameters may yield a high quality of fit and precise predictions for the frequencies of the outcome occurrence. Linear and logistical regressions are used to make an explicit exposition of the results of regression modeling and prediction.
