Socio-Psychological Impacts Of Hydraulic Fracturing On Community Health And Well-Being, Mehmet Soyer, Kylen Kaminski, Sebahattin Ziyanak Feb 2020

Socio-Psychological Impacts Of Hydraulic Fracturing On Community Health And Well-Being, Mehmet Soyer, Kylen Kaminski, Sebahattin Ziyanak

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

At the core of the hydraulic fracturing (fracking) debate is the level of perceived risk involved with extractive industries, such as the release of toxic and carcinogenic chemicals, increased population growth, and truck traffic. However, industry supporters of fracking acclaim the benefits of oil and gas drilling, such as energy independence and economic gains. In this study, we examine the perceived impacts of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) on community health and well-being based on interviews with anti-fracking activists in Denton, Texas who were active in the “anti-fracking” community organization, Frack Free Denton (FFD). Emergent from the interviews, we discuss the socio-psychological …

Objectification Of Same-Sex And Opposite-Sex Individuals, Simona Mackovichova Feb 2020

Objectification Of Same-Sex And Opposite-Sex Individuals, Simona Mackovichova

Augsburg Honors Review

The objectifying gaze refers to the tendency to focus on one's sexual body parts, thereby reducing the target of the objectifying gaze to a mere object. This tendency has been shown to be more prevalent among men and directed frequently towards women. The present study investigated the gender differences in male and female gaze patterns towards same-sex and opposite-sex models. It was predicted that (1) males would attend to bodies of all models more than females, (2) the body regions of the female targets would be focused on more than the body regions of male targets, especially by male participants, …

Identity Crisis: How The Outcome Of The Cold War Affects Our Understanding Of The Crisis In Ukraine, Sara Catherine Lichon Feb 2020

Identity Crisis: How The Outcome Of The Cold War Affects Our Understanding Of The Crisis In Ukraine, Sara Catherine Lichon

Augsburg Honors Review

This paper discusses how history affects the present, arguing that the outcome of the Cold War aids our understanding of the current Ukraine Crisis by shedding light on the identity crises which Ukraine, Russia, and the United States faced after the Soviet Union collapsed. These new identities conflicted with each other, ultimately leading to the conflict we are facing today. The paper starts by discussing what the Ukraine Crisis is: current fighting between pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine and Ukrainian troops, due to conflict that began after Ukrainian pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych was overthrown in 2014. The situation in Ukraine …

The Implications Of Democratization Of Information, Darby Cook Feb 2020

The Implications Of Democratization Of Information, Darby Cook

Augsburg Honors Review

Globalization is largely hailed as a positive force throughout the world-it is responsible for new technologies, revolutionary medical breakthroughs, and, of course, vacationing and tourism. However, globalization is also linked to our current information deluge, which greatly complicates citizens' lives as well as the role of government. In this paper, I attempt to answer several questions: Does this informational deluge make governance better or worse? Does it improve how we are governed? Does this improved governance ultimately lead to an improved society as well, or does it simply complicate things and hinder progress? The democratization of information allows individuals unprecedented …

Relative Importance Of Attractiveness And Financial Status For Potential Partners, Danielle Chevalier Feb 2020

Relative Importance Of Attractiveness And Financial Status For Potential Partners, Danielle Chevalier

Augsburg Honors Review

Evolutionary psychology has continually investigated what women are interested in when looking for potential partners. In our study, we were interested in whether men's financial status or attractiveness mattered more in women's perception of their attractiveness and likeliness to date. Four dating proflles were created with differing levels of financial status and attractiveness. Our main hypothesis was that the profile with high financial status and low attractiveness would be rated higher in perceived attractiveness and likeliness to date than the profile with low financial status and high attractiveness, suggesting that financial status is preferred over attractiveness. A secondary hypothesis was …

Recruitment, Megan Paul Feb 2020

Recruitment, Megan Paul

Umbrella Summaries

What is recruitment?

Recruitment refers to efforts by organizations to make potential job candidates aware of job openings and influence whether they apply, maintain interest in the job until an offer is made, and accept an offer (Breaugh, 2008). Note that although applicants may be affected by strategies used to assess their qualifications and potential (e.g., interviews), those activities are not considered part of recruitment and will not be covered in this summary. Further details will be provided in the umbrella summary on employee selection.

Why is recruitment important?

The most obvious reason that recruitment is important is because vacancies …

Civics Across Campus: Designing Effective Extracurricular Programming, Claire Abernathy, Jennifer L. Forestal Feb 2020

Civics Across Campus: Designing Effective Extracurricular Programming, Claire Abernathy, Jennifer L. Forestal

Political Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This study focuses on examining the role that isolated extracurricular events can play in furthering students’ civic education; these one-time events require fewer resources to implement than courses and therefore provide valuable opportunities for faculty to engage new audiences on their campuses in the work of civic learning. In order to develop more effective civic learning in these isolated extracurricular activities, we follow a two-pronged approach. First, we use survey data to determine the audiences reached by extracurricular civic education events, as well as to assess event attendees’ levels of political knowledge, civic skills, democratic values, and feelings of efficacy. …

Eye-Movement Benchmarks In Heritage Language Reading, Olga Parshina, Anna K. Laurinavivhyute, Irina A. Sekerina

Publications and Research

This eye-tracking study establishes basic benchmarks of eye movements during reading in heritage language (HL) by Russian-speaking adults and adolescents of high (n = 21) and low proficiency (n = 27). Heritage speakers (HSs) read sentences in Cyrillic, and their eye movements were compared to those of Russian monolingual skilled adult readers, 8-yearold children and L2 learners. Reading patterns of HSs revealed longer mean fixation durations, lower skipping probabilities, and higher regressive saccade rates than in monolingual adults. High-proficient HSs were more similar to monolingual children, while low-proficient HSs performed on par with L2 learners. Low-proficient HSs differed from high-proficient …

Transitioning: An Ethnographical Study Of Mid-20th Century Transgender Americans, Samuel Mccracken Feb 2020

Transitioning: An Ethnographical Study Of Mid-20th Century Transgender Americans, Samuel Mccracken

Augsburg Honors Review

This essay explores a number of historical and anecdotal resources in an attempt to construct an ethnography around transgender individuals of the American 1950s and 60s. Situating my study in the context of a rising national interest in the quasi-scientific field of sexology as well as the nuclear family-centered sociopolitical climate of the post-WWII United States, my analysis seeks to understand the varying lived experiences of transgender Americans and conjecture about the quality of their lives. Because the focus of my study concerns a group living before the use of the term "transgender" to describe gender identity and, indeed, before …
